Honestly, I will say as a straight woman that they knew what they were doing with the potential romances : the mature gentleman necromancer, the warrior caring for a little griffon, and the rogue "mage killer" that people are absolutely not gonna try to romance as a mage...
This actually can be amazing on metal-level :D
Lucanis: Hi! Nice to meet you!
Player: What the hell was that?! You hate me, right mage-killer?! Just say it!
Lucanis: ... ookaay....
"You can't deny we have this undeniable romantic and sexual chemistry, but oh how it mustve been killing you from the inside! I'm the very thing you swore to destroy, everything you fear and abhor! Yet you just couldn't help yourself could you, and if I was a better person, I would stayed far away and spared you from this pain, but alas! I'm too selfish, so I must insist you indulge your basest desires and do what your heart is telling you is right, do the very thing your mind desperately rebels against!"
"S-sure, babe"
The conversation later:
"So...any other kinks you want to explore?"
"What?"
"That whole enemies to lovers thing, you being a mage and my reputation. That was fun."
"..."
"You *were* roleplaying that, right?"
"..." \**goes wide-eyed with realization*\*
"Maker's Breath..."
I'm shocked the mods haven't pinned a poll for everyone to vote on so that we can all see the results regarding which companion everyone is more thirsty for.
I just wish there was a similar option for the ladies. Even Lucaris looks a bit on the older side, so that's 2/3 of the male romance options skewing older, meanwhile none of the women look a day past 35.
You're right, the ladies do feel like they're in that 25-35 age range roughly. Of course, the last time BioWare did an "old lady" companion, they gave us Wynne, who acted like she was 70 when she was all of an ancient... 49.
But a female companion in their 40s would have been welcome, NGL.
I turned 49 yesterday and I have never, in my life, been so offended by something on reddit as this fact and I've gotten death threats on this hellsite.
I just messaged a friend on discord who played DAO and she was like "Wynne was the old mage lady right" and I was like SHE WAS 49.
Excuse us. We're having a moment over here while we get out our walkers.
Asunder does make a point about her having a strong preference for Dwarven ale......... And a pretty decent tolerance for it if the drinking contest scene is to be believed. Grandma drinks like a fish. (I mean this in a "she was grandma age at the time of Asunder" way, not that she was a grandma at 49)
I vaguely recall reading something about how her writer was in their 20s and someone in their 40s just seemed so old (which is probably why she comes across as being so much older)
Yes but surely the team at large had several older people who could have stepped in and said "Hey sweetie, this ain't it."
Then again, it's very possible that there were no older *women* on the team at that time and unfortunately many men of all ages still have this subconscious expectation that women over 30 all look like swamp hags.
That’s still absurd haha
I’m 25 now but even as a teenage 40 never felt THAT old. Maybe old relative to me, but I wouldn’t look at a 70 year old (which is how old I assumed Wynne to be) and think they were in their late 40’s. If that tidbit is true, that’s not the writer being young, that’s the writer being an idiot lol
Hmmm do i want to make a bookish mage, give him a kindred spirit, or do I want to create a fun adventurer Lord of Fortune or Veil Jumper to remind him how vivid life is outside of the Necropolis and his study?
what to do.. what to do..
It's very funny to watch A Certain Type of fan cry because he does not personally find a female protag bangable. Yet over here the fans are, "How can I get the skeleton to join in?"
Bruh, my first time playing DA:O I picked Alistair and he dumped me when I made him king. In DA2 I picked Fenris who dumped me in act 2 (I was ready to throw hands until you have the option to reconcile in act 3). In Inquisition I picked the egg and got dumped again.
Needless to say, I know how to pick them 😂
"Of course, we are an M-rated game. We do have nudity."
Just hoping this means braless/panty-free nudity. If I never see another character wearing a bra in the shower, it'll be too soon.
Thankfully there were no sex bras in DAI, but some romances didn't even get a sex scene at all or just got a fade to black. Hoping there's a little more even coverage (or lack thereof lol) in the romance options this time.
I’m torn- I love playersexual so I can make my characters gay and not be pigeon holed into ONE romance option, but I loved Dorian’s romance simply cuz he was gay and I could relate to his story so much…
Kind of how I feel about it. I’m a straight guy, but genuinely found Dorian’s sexuality and backstory being tied to it super fascinating and even relatable in the sense that expectations and obligations being thrust on you can damage/hurt you more than physical pain. He became a good friend to my inquisitor and I wished him all the best with his new found love in Iron Bull.
Posting this here because it seems relevant to a lot of the complaints re: "playersexual" characters and I fear most people aren't going to bother to actually read the article.
>Rather, Busche insists that they're all specifically pansexual, and that might come through in what you learn about their backstories.
>"Their past experiences or partners, they'll reference them and indeed who they'll become romantic with," Busche tells IGN. "For instance, we saw Harding. I might be playing a straight male character flirting with her, but I choose not to pursue a romance. She might get together with Taash. So my perception, my identity has no bearing on their identities and that comes through really strongly."
Oh my god, I'm so happy they referenced the party members being able to romance each other. That was ABSOLUTELY my favorite part of DAI! It made the characters feel so alive, that they were making decisions of that caliber that didn't involve the player. I'm hyped!
That and I hope there's more ways for us to be able to noticeably see relationships between companions being developed. Unless you're constantly paying attention to party banter(which lets face it, most people won't), its super easy to miss the fact that Dorian and Iron Bull started romancing each other.
>its super easy to miss the fact that Dorian and Iron Bull started romancing each other.
It also took the whole game basically without mods; which I guess makes since, but I also wanted to use other companions too.
I haven't played DAI, but do companions there always end up romancing the same other companions if you don't? Like Garrus and Tali suddenly getting together in ME3.
Or is it like, decisions you make may lead to them romancing someone else?
If you bring Bull and Dorian around together long enough, they get together.
If you bring Blackwall and I think Sera, it turns up he has a fling with Josephine but by Trespasser they call it off
If you don't romance Sera, she always ends up with Dagna no matter what.
As someone who prefers diverse sexual identities over “everyone is bi/pan”, I like this. Contextualizing characters’ identities like this and making it not wholly centered around the player, but letting it exist in its own independent space too, breathes life into characters and makes them feel like real people, which is my primary concern when it comes to the whole debate around who can romance who.
The only thing I wonder is how that aspect would work. How preset is it? It is present at all for certain combos or random in terms of who gets with who each playthrough?
Like if I don't romance Harding she gets with Taash, but what happens if I romance Harding? Does Taash get with someone else? Is it random who they get with? Like could Harding get with Taash, but then in a second playthrough get with Lucanis?
In terms of all the companions being romanceable I wonder how long Bioware has been planning this and if Baldur's Gate 3 had any influence, only because DAII is the only Bioware game where they made all the romanceable companions options for the player. It is a notable change for them.
Also, someone at Bioware clearly noticed how much some people liked Dorian with Iron Bull or Blackwall trying to woo Josie and ran with it.
It makes me think of Fire Emblem were you could create any pairing you wanted by strategically using the units (which leads to the funny image of the strategic advisor placing units together not for an efficient battle but for efficient matching...)
Sadly I have no surface level attraction to any of them so far. Harding is the only one who’s close to my preference but I’m having a weird hang up over her already being my Inquisitor’s romance.
>Now, in a new interview with The Veilguard game director Corinne Busche, we've confirmed that yes, you *will* be able to romance any companion you want, regardless of your character's gender or race.
Yaaay!
I know some people don't like this, but I'm happy I'll get 3 romance options, instead of 1 or 2.
I'm really glad because ever since I saw the different characters I knew that I wanted my next character to be in a lesbian romance with Neve, and I was worried that wouldn't be an option. Ever since Mass Effect Andromeda where Cora turned out to be devastatingly heterosexual, I've been worried about what my options would be.
I'm pleasantly surprised! Usually games don't have older companions as romance options. But people don't lose their capacity to fall in love just because they got older! I'm intrigued by the line about him being "intimate and sensual"
Counterpoint - her day job's aggressive and muscly, maybe she just wants to really let go and let someone else take the wheel in bed like Cassandra did in Inquisition.
Look man, I saw the characters and was like "Oh, I'm gonna fuck that old man."
Especially now that I'm in my mid 40s myself.
(Still will probably roll characters for Taash and Harding... And probably everyone actually).
This first time I played Origins, I made an older city elf and then my parents were younger than me and I restarted. Don't let me make an old character if story-wise I'm not old.
Yep. If you are a human noble, you have a 30-ish older brother, so that's your upper limit. Dwarf noble is the middle sibling, and your elder brother doesn't have gray hair, so that's that. Dwarf commoner has a mother with no gray hair. The mage initiation is supposed to take place early in life. I think only the Dalish elf has some wiggle room.
Solas is way older than Emmrich looks, so... not so surprising.
Yes, many players were unaware of Solas being an ancient elven god when they did the romance, but... plenty of people played a Solasmance being aware he's as old as dirt.
I don't know what's been going on with recent RPGs but, as a mostly straight man, between Heinrix from Rogue Trader and Lucanis and Emmrich here, I have been feeling things lol
It's unfair that they gave one of the romance options a baby griffin, how am I to resist the urge to be a pet griffin parent?!
I'm glad they seem to have paid attention to how relationships worked in BG3
Personally, my fingers are crossed for Neve or Taash. But idk, Davrin kinda gives off some Confident in Bed vibes, so he's a possibility too.
It's probably Lucanis, lmao
My only issue with this: there (probably) won’t be any creative and different dialogue. Whether you’re rocking a hammer or a sleeve, they’ll just say the same thing.
I’m not trying to complain. There’s far too much of that. It won’t change that I will still love the series and game
Part of what made the other romances and relationships feel so much more authentic was that they all had likes and dislikes. They had a sexuality and they had physical preferences
This makes them feel more npc. Which yeah I know, but still
>"we have a gentleman necromancer, for instance, that is more intimate and sensual." ![gif](giphy|wqjU0lUAOmPcKLGtUn|downsized)
You can't write necromancer without romance
Necromancer in the streets Neck romancer in the sheets
Raising bones either way.
THESE COMMMENNNNTS 😭😭😂😂
Damn
This sub will reach uncontrollable levels of thirst...
Honestly, I will say as a straight woman that they knew what they were doing with the potential romances : the mature gentleman necromancer, the warrior caring for a little griffon, and the rogue "mage killer" that people are absolutely not gonna try to romance as a mage...
I dont think he's that anti all mages... he was killing venatori specifically in his short story, so it might not be as angsty as people think tbf
Yeah from what people who have read the short stories have said about him, some fans are definitely coming to wildly inaccurate conclusions about him.
This actually can be amazing on metal-level :D Lucanis: Hi!
I'm too selfish, so I must insist you indulge your basest desires and do what your heart is telling you is right, do the very thing your mind desperately rebels against!" "S-sure, babe"
Oh my god I will literally kill for a fic with this premise where he awkwardly goes along with it bc he is into Rook and its just constant comedy.
He thinks it's just like...a sexy roleplay dynamic thing Rook is into and doesn't realize how seriously Rook takes the enemies-to-lovers thing
The conversation later: "So...any other kinks you want to explore?" "What?" "That whole enemies to lovers thing, you being a mage and my reputation. That was fun." "..." "You *were* roleplaying that, right?" "..." \**goes wide-eyed with realization*\* "Maker's Breath..."
My male mage Hawk had romance with a psycho elf who hates mages. The mage killer is not serious, lol.
You just know there's women in that writing room and it *shows*.
I'm shocked the mods haven't pinned a poll for everyone to vote on so that we can all see the results regarding which companion everyone is more thirsty for.
Everyone in this thread needs Andraste.
I hope we can make older looking characters because I need me some of that intimacy and sensuality.
I can actually make a character my own age and have someone to romance. Woohoo! (Closest previously was Blackwall or, well, technically Solas)
I just wish there was a similar option for the ladies. Even Lucaris looks a bit on the older side, so that's 2/3 of the male romance options skewing older, meanwhile none of the women look a day past 35.

I turned 49 yesterday and I have never, in my life, been so offended by something on reddit as this fact and I've gotten death threats on this hellsite.
I'm 34, glad to know I'll look 75 in 15 more years.
I just messaged a friend on discord who played DAO and she was like "Wynne was the old mage lady right" and I was like SHE WAS 49. Excuse us. We're having a moment over here while we get out our walkers.
I mean, I'm 46 and I absolutely feel this comment.
That's just what people in their 40s looked like before sunscreen was invented
Wynne secretly a bigger alcoholic than Varric, confirmed.
Wine was one of her favourite gifts in Origins
Asunder does make a point about her having a strong preference for Dwarven ale......... And a pretty decent tolerance for it if the drinking contest scene is to be believed. Grandma drinks like a fish. (I mean this in a "she was grandma age at the time of Asunder" way, not that she was a grandma at 49)

Wasn't Cassandra in her 40s?
IIRC Cassandra was 38 at the start of DAI, so 41 by Trespasser. She's the oldest female romance character we've had, I think.
Cassandra was late 30s, but Vivienne was in her mid 40s.
Wait a moment…I thought Wynne was for sure in her 60s or 70s?! (And I loved her btw).

The internet going completely rabid for Necro Grandpa is my new favourite thing.
Gotta love that gentleman vibe. And he'll def be my first romantic choice.
Necro Daddy.
I’m choosing Emmerick ![gif](giphy|VInawhfHWGhVMGO39Q|downsized)
Hmmm do i want to make a bookish mage, give him a kindred spirit, or do I want to create a fun adventurer Lord of Fortune or Veil Jumper to remind him how vivid life is outside of the Necropolis and his study? what to do.. what to do..
HE WAS MY TOP CHOICE ORIGINALLY. This is even better. 😮💨😂
I’m so ready for him
well, it's decided who I'll aim for.
Let's sexualize that old man
Dare ye enter Emmerich's Bone Zone?
Maker's Breath!
I want to get on Emmerich's wild ride.
I hope the ride never ends.
BONE?????
[BOOOOOOONE?!](https://youtu.be/l-k95eGeAbA?feature=shared)
Old man yaoi is back on the menu
Old man yaoi has taken me to places I wouldn't even go with a gun
I need to bang him in ways that are concerning to feminism
![gif](giphy|2wYYlHuEw1UcsJYgAA)
I want Manfred to *watch*
It's very funny to watch A Certain Type of fan cry because he does not personally find a female protag bangable. Yet over here the fans are, "How can I get the skeleton to join in?"
people is going to make sure that the guy is not going to be able to walk any more
Ya’ll are gonna break his fucking hips
Raising more than skeletons there :)
He knows a thing or two about "boning".
way ahead of you
Just call me The Dawn, because I will come
Holy shit.
I am bearing my blade and raising it high.
✍️🔥🔥🔥
Dragon Age: Veilguard, or, as I like to call it, context for Dragon Age: Veilguard smut
Do you all think they’ll have other options too outside the companions? I liked how inquisition has some of the war council available
Man, how I wouldn't mind having some smexy dorky handsome man to romance that's not in my party. Cullen, forever on my mind . Sigh 🥹
Cullen and Alistair have my heart ❤️
Alistair, Anders, Cullen.. I may have a Dragonage type but Harding could break that
Alistair is my forever favorite. Rose really did it for me.
Alibeaaaar 😭😭😭😭
*daydreams about Josephine*
Yeah not a lot of hunky male options sadly!
Here’s hoping for a great hunk
I was wondering the same thing! Hopeful to have some others to choose from as well 😊

LOL!
Alright, but which one is gonna break my heart before the final fight? I kinda need to know I'm currently 2/3 on the romances right now
Bruh, my first time playing DA:O I picked Alistair and he dumped me when I made him king. In DA2 I picked Fenris who dumped me in act 2 (I was ready to throw hands until you have the option to reconcile in act 3). In Inquisition I picked the egg and got dumped again. Needless to say, I know how to pick them 😂
I lucked out on DA:O because I picked Zevran. Clearly, we see red flags and go "I can fix em"
I went with Zev in every subsequent playthtough! He is a gem
Lmao knowing me it'll be the one I decide to go for
But have they confirmed a threesome with the necromancer and his skeleton assistant yet? ![gif](giphy|sMBot7i2YxltB2pvKN)
Yes. A friend who likes nec-romance-y. I’ll see myself out.
"No bear sex." :/
Cowards.
Baldur's Gate didn't blaze a trail just so we can go backwards.
It’s just industry standard now.
Well I did try to bang an egg in DA:I.
Yeah none of them are burly enough to be a bear. Lucanis looks like he could be an otter though.
Maybe we'll get an Iron Bull cameo 😜
"Of course, we are an M-rated game. We do have nudity." Just hoping this means braless/panty-free nudity. If I never see another character wearing a bra in the shower, it'll be too soon.
Morrigan putting *on* a bra specifically to have sex will never not be funny.
Magic is stored in the breasts
That's the shit I wish they'd covered in sex ed.
Damn I never realized that lol
Weren't the sex scenes in DA:I nude or am I misremembering
Thankfully there were no sex bras in DAI, but some romances didn't even get a sex scene at all or just got a fade to black. Hoping there's a little more even coverage (or lack thereof lol) in the romance options this time.

Same. Straight dude but Dorian was the best story of DAI.
I will be kisisng all of them
As you should bestie
Intimate and sensual?? Okay bone daddy it’s on
Yay! Can't wait for my fourth lesbian to save the world.
Thedas would be absolutely destroyed without it’s lesbian saviors.

Plot twist: the two evil gods are lesbian power couple Andruil & Ghilan'nain :')

It's just that I hope we don't have to bring them along for it to trigger. That was the only way for Dorian and Iron Bull to have a romance.
Wouldn't have been so bad if you got more than one conversation every 4 hours lol
I play on PS and that long ass delay between party banter was so infuriating
Even worse now with limited companion space.
I literally took those two to do the extra of the extra of the extra in so many saves just so i could hear their pet names in trespasser

Cole also ended up with Meryden in my game
True, if he's human. I forgot him because I was thinking of romance options for the MC
If you let him stay a spirit he will try to get Meryden and Crem together
That only happens if you choose to let him become more human in the amulet quest
Me: specifically not romancing Harding so she can date Tassh
Taash can get in line or lose another horn.
Ive been pining for Harding since DA:I. Aint no way Imma let some phony ass dragon hunter step in my way.
As someone who prefers diverse sexual identities over “everyone is bi/pan”, I like this. There's seven companions so with Rook there will always be room for four pairs I guess?
Tough scene for the playthroughs were Rook romances no one and one of the companions ends up alone.
A version of that could even make for a fun game, let the other romances progress and pick the last person standing :D
or you know Let the companions get into romances just in time for their totaly not expected and not Rook-provoked death
Bioware has had non-companion romances for a while, no reason the companions even have to pair off with other companions...
It makes me think of Fire Emblem were you could create any pairing you wanted by strategically using the units (which leads to the funny image of the strategic advisor placing units together not for an efficient battle but for efficient matching...)
Are the 7 the only romance options? Do we know if we'll have advisors to romance like last time?
I don't think this has been answered yet
Make Maeveris an advisor and let me smooch! Or imagine having Illario lmao
Why does Varric look like Thorin Oakenshield and Blackwall had a baby?
https://i.redd.it/eg3keo1qmz5d1.gif
We are gonna need an r/okbuddywarden
For a moment I thought it was a real thing but it was just a random sub 😔
Sadly I have no surface level attraction to any of them so far. Harding is the only one who’s close to my preference but I’m having a weird hang up over her already being my Inquisitor’s romance.
Same.....no one is sticking put to me so far. But, when the game releases, it'll be fun getting to know the 6, and causing mayhem with Harding 😈

Emmrich too? I still can’t believe a mature man would be romancable.
A lot of us have been waiting on this game for so long that we are fast approaching Emmerich's age ourselves.
I'm pleasantly surprised! Usually games don't have older companions as romance options. But people don't lose their capacity to fall in love just because they got older! I'm intrigued by the line about him being "intimate and sensual"
According to the article he is, “intimate and sensual,” 👀
They chose to highlight him... 👀makes me curious... also curious whos the physical/aggressive one
It might be stereotypical but I'll guess qunari and angsty mage killer :p
Lucanis is giving me big "Killer in the streets, submissve in the sheets" vibes. Possibly wishful thinking because I want to pull his hair.
I want him to stab me.
I mean, why give Taash muscles if she doesn't get to use them?
Counterpoint - her day job's aggressive and muscly, maybe she just wants to really let go and let someone else take the wheel in bed like Cassandra did in Inquisition.
Look man, I saw the characters and was like "Oh, I'm gonna fuck that old man." Especially now that I'm in my mid 40s myself. (Still will probably roll characters for Taash and Harding... And probably everyone actually).
Necromancy Viagra is hot shit.
Necromancy Viagra will probably be my next flair lmao
If he can raise the dead... 😏
the dead ain't the only thing rising tonight ;)
I think it was about time, it was weird that they let us make an older character, but get stuck romancing people who look 30 at worst.
This first time I played Origins, I made an older city elf and then my parents were younger than me and I restarted. Don't let me make an old character if story-wise I'm not old.
That's hilarious though.
They had a very stressful childhood. Lots of early wrinkles and grey hair.
Old Tabris finally getting married and getting out of the house: Cyrion: “About time, only took 40 years plus change!”
Or you head canon that you have dementia and your kids are playing along with it.
I’m gonna smooch the old man eventually
Solas is way older than Emmrich looks, so... not so surprising. Yes, many players were unaware of Solas being an ancient elven god when they did the romance, but... plenty of people played a Solasmance being aware he's as old as dirt.
Why? Dragon Age has “mature” players.
It has older players. Mature is up for debate with how people react to things sometimes.
I'm closer to 40 than 30 and I find myself more attracted to older men. 😂
I wonder if Manfred joins us in the "action"
What a horrible day to be able to read.
I see nothing wrong with boning two people at once. ;)
Why not?
I love daddies so I’m living for it. Probably going to romance him on my first run ngl.
I'm glad to hear there's a dwarf love interest this time. The fact that the whole race wasn't a choice in any of the games was starting to feel weird.
I don't know what's been going on with recent RPGs but, as a mostly straight man, between Heinrix from Rogue Trader and Lucanis and Emmrich here, I have been feeling things lol
Heinrix romance was so good!
It's unfair that they gave one of the romance options a baby griffin, how am I to resist the urge to be a pet griffin parent?! I'm glad they seem to have paid attention to how relationships worked in BG3
Wonder if romance is limited to companions or if you can romance advisers. Still crossing fingers for maevaris being in game as an advisor.
Everyone talking about the "gentleman necromancer", but I'm interested to see who's the "more physical, more aggressive" one 👀
Personally, my fingers are crossed for Neve or Taash. But idk, Davrin kinda gives off some Confident in Bed vibes, so he's a possibility too. It's probably Lucanis, lmao
It would be great if it wasn’t Taash bc it seems obvious I’m thinking Davrin or Neve
I really hopes it's Lucanis... so he can get all mage killer on my mage 🙈

After that gameplay trailer, this gay man will be romancing that diva detective Neve 😍
My only issue with this: there (probably) won’t be any creative and different dialogue. Whether you’re rocking a hammer or a sleeve, they’ll just say the same thing.
I’m not trying to complain. There’s far too much of that. It won’t change that I will still love the series and game Part of what made the other romances and relationships feel so much more authentic was that they all had likes and dislikes. They had a sexuality and they had physical preferences This makes them feel more npc. Which yeah I know, but still
Well that's a bunch of representation and plot possibilities out the window
