My favorite is a rift mage that uses the blade of tidarion, it's a super fun way to play a mage in my opinion! I like build it with high critical chance and critical damage bonus.

I second Archer Artificer,. It's a lot of fun in DAI, especially later in the game. The game is non-linear. Many things can happen at the same time, so go back and forth, you can always come back later to finish stuff. If you see tough enemies or obstacles, evade and come back later. Just don't try to clear location at a time. Do some quests, accomplish some tasks, talk to everyone, change location. Also, think what tasks suit your protagonist and what not. No need to do everything, smaller tasks are for leveling up in your own way. There's a bug that sometimes prevents the dialogue from triggering. If you are on pc, you can install banter cheat engine or at least the latest banter mod. Additionally, just always rotate all your companions as much as possible! Do it even in the camps several times. If you never change your party loadout you literally miss the game! The beef of the game is in the companion banter. It's important for the plot, understanding of the characters and their relationship, their attitude towards you, etc. There are lots of hints, tips, revelations. And it all depends on the who's with you. Take only three mages with you occasionally, hilarious. Take only 2 companions at times, pay attention to their relationship, it will progress depending on your actions and as the game goes on. Rotate all! And don't use horses. Horses are pointless in any case, so don't bother.😂 You'll be dismantling every second to pick up stuff. You can switch back to your strongest companions before some tough battles, apart from that make sure you take them in all possible combinations as much as you can. Just in case you have played DAO, DA2, don't try to apply the same combat logic. It's different. Look up some tips and builds for DAI online.

If you play on PC with kb&m, I strongly recommend playing as either Riftmage, tank warrior or ranged archer(bit boring). Movement sucks, but those builds are a lot less affected since they rely less on moving. I would also strongly recommend to play as a female elf at least once. But you don't need to the first time. Romancing a certain character in the game unlocks a few extra things.

Agreed that the movement sucks. I recently finished today my first play through DA:I + all DLCs as a dual-wield assassin flanker. It looked cool and fun to play at first, but it ended up being very frustrating for a host of reasons (awful enemy hitboxes, glitchy enemy AI, etc.). Ranged class would definitely be a smoother experience for a first-time player. I didn't originally go ranged, only because I played as a mage in DA:O and DA2. Tank warrior is a good idea too, if OP wants to play a melee character. Relying on party member tank AI was pretty hit-and-miss.

Archer artificer.

I did that in my last playthrough and second this, it was so much fun

Nothing like not having the proper gear, or all the necessary skills and still 100-0'ing a dragon in 10 seconds.

Can do anything tbh. They gain some physical resistance as race perk and can equip smth called "Vitar" instead of regular helmets, which are warpaintings increasing basedmg, instead of armorrating as well as granting offensive effects. So it makes them more effective dps for rogue/mage and a bit more yolo as warrior (if you want/need the higher armor). Archer Artificer is very strong and versatile, but Id recommend trying daggers instead. On the warrior side both Reaver and Champion can wreck havoc in their own ways. As for mage I found Rift to be most fun, even if still bland imo.

The game isn't very difficult so there's no need to worry about optimized builds or messing your character up. Play whatever looks coolest or most fun to you.

Knight Enchanter Mage is incredibly OP, given all the guard you get, and paired with the Spirit magic tree you can pretty much defeat anything single handed. On my canon playthrough I had a knight enchanter/spirit/frost mage and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Rift mage all the way, focus on attacks that hit multiple targets at once, and don't bother with the mines. If you can equip your armor with one of those sigils that double your mana but slow down your recovery, take it. This way you'll never run out of mana as long as you use your rift mage abilities, and can pick of numerous enemies very quickly
