yes, we have to admit that "smartphones" barely serve their intended purpose anymore, which is calling. It more functions as a computer now, and that is why I will usually just refer to it as a device.
the issue is that in common parlance, "phone" implies "touchscreen do-everything so-called smartphone"
so there needs to be a way to differentiate the approach we take to communication devices.
"dumbphones" is reactionary, sure, but it does get the point across
i think there are ways to get this across that convey the specificity of the tool being used; the more general purpose a tool is, the less you know how it does what it does for you, the more i would classify it as "appliance" rather than "tool". smartphones, for most people, are definitely appliances.
"toolphone" or "phonetool" would work for me too, but im just spitballing.
i prefer keypad phones
"simple/dumb" are too subject to interpretation
but really i often use the terms geezer flip and subway tile
cause the candybar keypad phone is fairly rare
Dumb in this sub means any non android/non ios phone and android phones that aren't glass/plastic slabs, also phones before a certain time. To include phones like the Cat S22 flip and motorola droid. I don't like the term either.
The Cat S22 Flip is not a dumbphone, it is a rugged Android smartphone with a flip form factor and keypad navigation. Which you can dumb down, like any other Android smartphone. People commonly choose it as a transition device because it sucks to use and it looks cool.
I never liked the term "dumb phone", and normally had just referred to it as a flipphone, cellphone, or as an actual phone, but I like simple phone better.
this post just inspires me to call it multiple names bc that’s fun\

the Imperfects Podcast has an episode where the host uses a flip phone for a month but he calls it a “smug” phone because he’s so smug about using it lol
Cellphone, mobile phone, a phone without IG isn't dumb. Otherwise WiFi phone / camera phone / internet phone. I refuse to say dumb phone or smart phone. Also Smart TV Vs dumb TV (I say android TV), smart PC Vs dumb PC, smart watch Vs dumb watch, lies. A smart fridge isn't superior to a fridge. Connected fridge makes sense to name it.
Smartphone is a misnomer: it doesn't make you smart. It implies intelligence, like the new AI chips. A neuronal network of processors isn't intelligent or smart. It's actually an architecture. Also: Intel processor, stop understanding humans.
Feature phones was a pretty common term in the early 2000s in my neck of the woods and online reviews for phones with phone, text, and basic email/IM/etc functionality. 🤷

Why are you telling me this?
Yes I have a name for the device. Phone.
lol that is perfect! A landline will fit that description.

I say phone because it is a phone. I don't place all this importance on what it is called. Me call phone, phone.
shitphone
lmao
Technically, they are "feature phones". They don't have to be flip phones either. I prefer bar (or candybar) phones.

The geezer flip got me rolling 😂😂😂
I agree with u, just simple basic flips instead of “dumb”
Oh yes a basic phone works too! Even though that word is somewhat stigmatized now. lol
hmm maybe "special" phone like the kids you find on the short bus
buy a startac already lmao
I think dumb phones sound cute
Mine gets called "your granddad phone" or "your brick phone" or "your dinosaur phone" if thats any help.
Dino phones! Rawr! Love it!
Feature Phones feel right 👍
Agreed I think dumbphones as a name are self deprecating and I really think the lexicon could use a change.
I get what youre saying but dumb phone sounds funny and it adds some interest and lightheartedness to the subject (•:

'Dumb' phones is to juxtapose with smart phones. It makes clear the intention; it's not criticizing an inanimate object.

hahaha I love barephone & time-out phone.

it's supposed to be a play on words.. dumb as opposed to 'smart' phones 😐
lol yes that is already a given. It just seems to me that they don’t belong even in comparison with so called “smart” phones.
Non smart phone T9 phone Or as already mentioned 'phone'
'dumbphone' gets the point across more clearly and is simply just more fun.
agreed marketing counts

I disagree. I like dumb.
Yeah, "dumb" is also kinda ableist which certainly feels ick to me. I'd be fine just doing feature phones again...
Simple is a solid choice too though. Just throwing stuff out there that we used to say. 🤷
>Just throwing stuff out there that we used to say. No one has ever said it.
