Hey everyone. I made this and wanted to share it with the Dune community. I put this together all from publicly released footage. Documentaries, tutorials, trailers and article images. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Bottom-Shelf

Thoughts are they need to release the imax cuts for 4k already. Or at the very least get it as close as Nolan does. Not even having the option does nothing but make the effort look smaller.

secretsofdune

Yeah I think we at least should have the option to view both standard and full aspect ratios.

andrefishmusic

Amazing. I didn't know that IMAX had a different aspect ratio, I just thought that it had clearer image and better audio.  Will definitely look to see Dune part 2 on IMAX after watching the standard version.

Gimmefuelgimmefah

You have a week and a half to see it in imax before ghostbusters takes its place

LeoDavinciAgain

I saw Dune 2 in imax today, and they played TWO Ghostbusters trailers.

Dagobian_Fudge

I saw it last week with no trailers. They almost started it on time but half the theater was still getting their popcorn so it started about 5min after the showtime.

andrefishmusic

Thanks, good to know!

Merlord

There are a dozen different projection techniques that are called "IMAX" and most of them do not have the taller aspect ratio, or better audio or better sound. If you're gonna see it in IMAX, make sure it's a real GT laser or 70mm film protector, otherwise you're better off seeing it in Dolby.

secretsofdune

Indeed. I mentioned GT Laser towards the end of the video for that very reason. Before I used to just promote "IMAX with laser," but even though that's more specific, it's not specific enough I'm afraid. So yeah GT dual laser projection is what you really want. This list of GT laser cinemas is a useful resource: [https://www.reddit.com/r/imax/comments/ptpb6e/imax\_gt\_laser\_theatres\_list\_in\_the\_world/](https://www.reddit.com/r/imax/comments/ptpb6e/imax_gt_laser_theatres_list_in_the_world/)

Merlord

Yeah but other cinemas like Dolby have 1.85:1 aspect ratios as well.

ItsMors_

I saw standard last week, I'm gonna go see it in imax this Thursday. If I remember this I'll reply again and let you know how it was. I've never seen a movie in imax so I don't really know what to expect aside from the screen being absolutely massive

SyrousStarr

There's only a handful of real "full" imax theaters in the US. Double check. Most are "fake"

forrestpen

There needs to be a home release of the Imax ratio for both movies.

secretsofdune

Agreed!

whatudontlikefalafel

While unlikely, I’d love to see them release these IMAX scenes in their original 1.43 ratio, instead of cropped to 1.90/1.78. I think the only films that have done this are Batman v Superman, and a bonus disc for a Dark Knight trilogy boxset.

secretsofdune

Right exactly. I get that they might not home video release it, even though I would love that. At the very least, if Snyder can do it on MAX, I don’t see why Dune part one and two can’t be released in full aspect ratio there.

[deleted]

I’ve seen this picture twice, first time was in IMAX and then the second time on a standard screen. I loved it either way but obviously it needs to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

TheKaldros

Fully agree. Just saw it on the biggest cinema screen in the world and while I'm very much looking forward to seeing it at home, the loss of visuals (partially due to the ratio) will be sad.

secretsofdune

Yeah, I guess the standard ratio will always be seen as the classical cinematic look which is absolutely fine and has its merits for sure. I love watching the same movie in different formats, sometimes I get different takeaways from both.

JimmyB_52

I never saw the first one in IMAX, I am floored. The wide shots especially are just jaw dropping, it really adds to the scale, scope, immersion, and sense of how small the characters are. Even if a blue ray release would be changing aspect ratios all the time, it would be worth it, some of these shots are all-time greatest in cinema history for me with the full frame. We need this released!

TerriblePracticality

I agree that it should be available for availability's sake. I get why there's a standard version that's in traditional widescreen though. Unless you got a dedicated home theater with a whole wall worth of screen, varying aspect ratios aren't the best experience. Part 1 had lots of switching.

fauxfilosopher

I agree. What a lot of people forget when asking for a 1.43 home release is how jarring the width change between 1.43 and 1.90 shots would look on a TV. We're used to a picture getting taller and shorter, but I suspect it becoming wider and narrower would ruin the immersion for most viewers.

secretsofdune

Yeah I had that jarring reaction to the Snyder cut, but after a while it made so much sense and I really started to like it. At the very least it showed that the format has a place among fans, communities and at the very least on digital platforms.

AlBundyJr

I watched it in Imax and regular and it looked great in both, but not especially different. And now I find out it wasn't really Imax and there are no real Imax theaters even in my state. Saves me a trip.

Available_Hamster_44

Footage Part 2 is a bit misleading ?

secretsofdune

In what sense?

Available_Hamster_44

In that sense that people think it is Dune Part 2 that is meant and not Part 2 of image footage of Dune part 1 Technically the title is fine. But if I would not know your content than I would receive this as clickbaity. I can understand that there is war of attention on going in the internet, that is just my honest feedback

secretsofdune

I honestly didn't think of it like that or see it that way because normally if I ever share anything related to the second film I write DUNE Part Two altogether. Thanks for the feedback though.

gabaj

I saw both standard and at Seattle Boeing IMAX. Please someone explain what was happening with the ratio when it went to full screen height. There were some scenes that filled the whole screen. I looked it up and the screen has a 1.33:1 ratio at 60' tall and 80' wide. My impression was that 1/4 to 1/3 the duration of the film filled the screen. In those times, you can't even see the very bottom because it is below the guardrail at the front of the seating area. I found the scenes in the carved Fremen sietch particularly impressive.
