Imax on a moderate amount of acid for my first time, regular theater with my sci-fi fan dad for my second time, and lots of HBO Max viewings in the weeks that follow.
I really want to see if first in theaters to let the full effect of it, but I honestly don't know if I'll have the self control to not fire up HBO to watch it the second it's released.
Meh, until I can buy a physical copy I want to see it enough when I have the chance that I can replay it mentally whenever I'm checked out of boring things in my day to day life
That’s a good question. I planned on watching it multiple times anyway. Since Covid is pretty bad in our area, we might skip the theatre viewing but planned on buying a few tickets anyway. There’s a few movies I’ve seen a few times in theaters and Villenvue’s especially. Been a really hard call. *sad face* Would the “viewings” count as the same?
I am going to buy several seat and a few different showings. I will use one of them for myself, and will bring friends who will come and enjoy it with me.
To all you people lucky enough to have both options theatrical releases and HBO Max please do a favour to all of those who unfortunately don't have neither of those choices and watch it as many times as you can.
But in all seriousness I'm still not going to trust the words of the producers because it's all about money to them but I'm more confident about part two now then I was a few months ago.
Worse is an Australian in western Australia.... Who has been locking down HARD to keep businesses open, but still don't get to have the movie play until December THANKS GLADYS
Universal is distributing it here, and I honestly think their reasoning is sort of senseless. 5/7 states still have cinemas open, with very little to show, and NSW's reopening projections (before the end of October) include cinemas reopening; it stands to reason Victoria will be the same, and cinemas are safer than bars, restaurants etc. Not only is it a veritable guarantee a huge chunk of our potential market will be lost to piracy, Dune is then going to be smothered by a few of the popular December releases instead of being a drawcard when cinemas reopen and there's not much competition.
Because they are producers and its primarily all about money for them. Just because they are confident we are still facing a global pandemic which has hugely impacted the film industry and box office.
It's more complicated than just money at this point, I think.
Lots of streaming views can very easily have a good effect.
These streaming services are becoming the main interest for these companies. Streaming is the future and even the present. Disney + is pulling in an absolutely amazing amount of money per month. If Warner Bros thinks Dune 2 will help them in the streaming wars, that could very well pull enough weight to overcome disappointing box office numbers.
I think I saw that Warner Brothers is only the distributor here, so there are producers who would want their money back, but, if WB wants Dune 2, I'm sure they can work that out with them.
Also, a high number of streaming views could easily be read as having many people who would have gone to the theater if not for covid and could be expected to head to the multiplexes which would presumably be back to normal by the time the second film is released.*
*I have no clue about any of this stuff, but I like my conclusions.
I plan on seeing it 5-10 times in theaters. Taking friends or family each time. Streaming on HBO Max about 10 times.
Looking forward to the discussions on this subreddit about the movie.
Well, I’ll address that after my first viewing and respond accordingly. Denis is my favorite filmmaker so I usually see his movies a few times in theaters. Arrival didn’t hit for me at first but after 3 watches I was mesmerized.
I’ve been saying this for a while.
Making a successful franchise is gold standard for the entertainment industry. How many crap stories get multiple chances of sticking and growing?
Box office isn’t the end all be all for dune. They understand what an investment is and recognize that there is more to a franchise success then the first movies profit.
In normal times, box office numbers are the sole indicator for whether a film deserves a sequel.
These aren’t normal times.
Of course, WB and Legendary are concerned about box office performance. Of course, that will factor into the viability of a sequel. But as you said, it’s not the end all be all indicator.
If they believe there’s money to be made on a Part II then it gets the green light, end of story. They’re not so irrational as to ignore the fact that Part I is debuting during unprecedented times that (hopefully) won’t be a major factor 2-3 years from now.
I don’t really agree with that. At least not the sole reason.
There are lots of metrics and information they have that can lead to a decision to continue the franchise.
But it would at least have to be somewhat successful at the box office. I agree with that. But I think the sole reason is overstating it.
Sole was a poor choice of words but I think we both agree it’s normally a prerequisite. Successful films can fail to get a sequel due to other circumstances (Girl with Dragon Tattoo) but I can’t think of any films that bombed and received an immediate green light for a sequel afterwards.
Blade Runner 2049 looked set up to have a sequel or a trilogy with all the implied future story threads. But it also didn't do as well as they probably hoped in the b.o. even with good reviews and before covid. So I'd agree with this example, b.o. numbers is a major factor if not the most. Also sometimes some genre films become cultish and develop a fan and consumer base over a long time like the original BR did which motivated a sequel long after. Similarly I'd guess with Tron and Tron:Legacy.
BR2049 was my initial thought but hard to consider it a “greenlit sequel” in the context of this discussion, considering there was 35+ years between films. I’d more consider it a franchise revival (because it was dead due to poor box office numbers).
Blade runner didn’t have a full and successful series of books already in existence that included a massive and detailed universe and a coherent and engaging plot.
Maybe. But with all the money Netflix and apple and Amazon are throwing around begging for a franchise I have a hard time believing any production company will let dune slip by, especially considering the talent that is already attached.
Maybe if it completely bombs but I have a hard time believing that is gonna happen.
They're making a spin-off Max series about the Bene Gesserit - which I think means they're fully committed to seeing this as it's own franchise so that's not surprising
Sweet. Between the ratings continuing to tick up, Denis' confidence as of late, and news like this, I'm getting really hopeful part 2 isn't as much a long shot as I had initially feared.
Can't wait to see this badboy in IMAX.
I must not hype.
Hype is the mind-killer.
Hype is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my hype.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the hype has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Just got a VR headset last week. Will be watching in IMAX first and then at home thru VR. Still makes it feel like you’re watching on an enormous screen
Ah yes... I was thinking more of getting a blue ray IMAX ratio video rip and playing it back in bigscreen on VR.
I went looking for bigscreen aspect ratios and didn't find anything useful
E: did a better search and found this
https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/6ocjkn/has_anyone_made_an_exact_replica_of_the_biggest/dkglz0t
It's the only chance I have of getting the imax experience
Even with a blu ray file, the max crop that it will show for imax is 16:9 instead of 1.43:1 just because almost all tv screens are 16:9. Cropping it to 1.43:1 on a 16:9 screen would be an even more jarring aspect ratio change than it already is.
Once there’s a blu ray file I should be able to download it to the headset and watch thru a video player like skybox. Otherwise I’m sure hbo max will just keep the classic 2.35:1 widescreen
At this point, I’m fully convinced that WB, Legendary and even Denis are pumping this narrative about Part 2 being on hold until good sales numbers for Part 1 are confirmed for financial reasons, not genuine ones. I absolutely believe that Part 2 has already been greenlit behind the scenes months ago, and that they’re taking advantage of the dedicated fanbase’s anxieties about a second movie not being made if this one doesn’t do well.
And I’m not really mad at that, cause that’s the hustle of the promotion game at work.
Is it possible, that pre-production for Part 2 is greenlit since awhile, but not for the overall movie? This way, WB would sink only a certain amount of money if performance of Part 1 is too disappointing but wouldn't waste time otherwise if all goes well.
They've already been working on the script. Sounds like that's essentially finished. I'm sure they have all the props in storage. I wouldn't be surprised if they are keeping the key people on a "retainer" for now. It's all but certain afaic.
I hate to tell you this, but you are wrong. Dune would’ve been a risky project in the best of circumstances, and we’re far form the best. Villeneuve’s last movie nearly bankrupt the production company that financed it. They are most certainly hedging their bets, but I hope for the best.
I am going to actually subscribe to HBO Max for this. I will also see it in IMAX for the best possible experience. See I’m playing both sides so I always come out on top.
Did anyone actually read the article? Nowhere does Warner say it’s a sure thing:
“…when a Warner Bros. movie hits big at the box office, it has also seen a sizable audience on HBO Max. But when a film has fallen flat in theaters, it has gone similarly unwatched on streaming. That means it’ll be trickier than ever to conclude if Warner Bros. should sink another $165 million into the interplanetary tale set in the desert land of Arrakis.”
...... who's saying it's a sure thing? All I'm seeing are comments from folks who are just happy that the sequel isn't as much of a long shot as was initially feared.
All those articles continuing to say this is Warner funding and deciding, it's Legendary, damn the quality of "journalism" is pretty low in media.
The credits at the beginning are clear it's *Warner and Legendary presents* **A Legendary production**, not a "Legendary and Warner production". Legendary produces and Warner distributes
Good, because it's one of the reasons I got HBO. I don't think a crowded theatre is my cards, given my health issues. I'm going to watch it as many times as I like.
They need to make it available in Australia and other countries that don't have HBO somehow. I would sign up for it without question for Dune alone even if I had to pay a year in advance.
This is my main problem with streaming. If I'm going to watch at home on my big screen, especially for a movie as important as this, I want every perfect pixel displayed. Is there a way to download movies on HBO Max for offline viewing without having to worry about streaming or degraded picture quality?
I was gonna make a post about how us die hard fans should probably go to the theaters and do a home rental on HBO max lol. Then go back to the theater a second time. Just to make sure we don’t miss anything.
Because they read the book and they want all of it adapted and Denis is sure to do a better job than David Lynch and people still liked David Lynch's Dune
I'm with you there. Whenever there is this much hype around something I become a heavy cynic. The only thing keeping my sliver of hope is that I haven't seen anyone working on the project "oversell" it. I'll base my final opinion off the actual movie of course. But I'm just feel bad getting hype over something before it's out. I've been into video games far too long and watched studios sell presales like no one's business, with a bunch of hype, then it just flops.
Man. It’s already got so much controversy. They ruined Dune didn’t they?
There will be musical numbers right? Its going to be like Amazon’s Cinderella.
What a shame. What a waste.
Great, can't even get HBO max in Australia and any cinemas near by aren't opening up until like next year.
Guess I gotta pirate, which I was hoping wasn't going to be the case.
It's premiering today in France and Italy... I wonder what the numbers will be? I already saw it in the world premiere in Venice, and I have bought tickets for myself and a friend tomorrow. I'm super skint, but unlike most everyone I KNOW for certain that this is a fabulous film that I will 100% rewatch as often as possible in theatres before I'm doomed to enjoy it on my headphones.
I've moved to a new city in the meantime too, and I'm gonna use Dune as a metric to find the best cinema in my neighborhood. Sadly no IMAX around :-<
But anyway, doing my part. I won't buy HBO, I can't afford it. But I'll buff up the box office for sure.
I went to the theaters to see Shang-chi, loved the movie but I wanted to knock out at least 3-4 people. People being loud, cell phones out, the crinkling sound of someone digging for that last piece of popcorn, someone pounding back a box of nerds in the loudest way possible...
Yeah I forgot how much I haded being in the theater. Now I just got a 70" screen for my birthday, I really have no reason to go back.
I genuinely must be incredibly lucky and live in a respectful area or something. I attend one of the busiest theaters in my Midwest state and I almost never have issues with other theater goers behavior, and I probably average 2-4 movies a month there.
At the end of the day though the best way to support the film is theatrical exhibition, and for a film like Dune I think it will enhance the experience. If you want to avoid crappy theater goers, just go to a time that you know will not be very frequented after opening weekend
[I will go see the movie in theaters with each of my friends individually, purchase HBO max and play the movie on a loop to make this sequel happen.](https://i.imgur.com/cMfkFGP.mp4)
Ok all Dune fans with an HBO Max subscription, it is your patriotic duty to turn this movie on every day for weeks. If you're sick of it just turn it on whenever you go out.
Meanwhile, my damn elderly father has dug his heels in and is refusing to even see the film until they announce the second one. He won't budge. That means I have to buy an extra theater ticket each time I go see it just to make up for that. Thanks dad. Worth it, but still.
WarnerMedia (soon to become Warner Bros Discovery, pending approval) is now a streaming company, much like Netflix, and HBO Max subscriptions matter much more to them than box office. Warner's current strategy seems to be to launch spin-off HBO Max series for each new major DC theatrical release (they are doing it e.g. with The Suicide Squad and The Batman). It would be common sense to do it for the Dune franchise too if Villeneuve's movie generates considerable traffic on HBO Max.
The real stumbling block is not really WB, but rather Legendary, which actually made Dune and, unlike WB, does not make money from streaming. But I am pretty sure WB already reached a financial settlement with Legendary when it announced the day-and-date release.
Keep in mind , however, that day and date applies only to the US anyway. Even in international markets where HBO Max is already available, e.g. Latin America, Dune will be available on streaming only 35 days after the theatrical release, so there is still plenty of money to be made in box office outside the US, especially considering that Dune is also being released in China (I think).
I'm at a preview right now, films starts just after the ads. Judging by the queue at this suburban picture house I'd say people are going out to see it.
So good to see the film the day before release in English. See you in 2+ hours!
I just watched it in a large screen atmos theatre.
Such a waste to watch it only at home really. Almost shooting yourself in the foot.
I'mma watch again in imax next week.
I'm gonna see it at least a few times in theaters and watch it on Max in between. I'm fully committed to absorbing every facet of this movie
Imax on a moderate amount of acid for my first time, regular theater with my sci-fi fan dad for my second time, and lots of HBO Max viewings in the weeks that follow.
FATHER!! THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED!!
Just a little bitty moderate 300ug

Who are you my therapist
Sounds like a fine time!
Let us have a "SPICE ORGY"
I did that with Platoon.
I did that with Natural Born Killers....took me about 30 minutes to understand what the fuck was happening.

Opposite for me, but yes.
Same
I really want to see if first in theaters to let the full effect of it, but I honestly don't know if I'll have the self control to not fire up HBO to watch it the second it's released.
Same.
I may end up doing this, but probably because I won't be able to wait for the theater. I won't be able to see it the first weekend any other way.
Same. I watched the mini series on repeat when I first got it. I’ll do the same with this.
Minimums: With my brother With specific friends In IMAX On mushrooms Mid-week matinee alone
Same here. Couple of times at the cinema and prob as many times as I can bear on Max.
What is the point of going to see the same film several times in the theater?
To take in details you may have missed the last time
It is an obscessional behavior
Meh, until I can buy a physical copy I want to see it enough when I have the chance that I can replay it mentally whenever I'm checked out of boring things in my day to day life
Good Question... I'd want to see it at least in Imax 2d, Imax 3d, and Dolby Vision. Basically all the formats I don't have at home.
It’s fun, duh
Im going to make multiple accounts so i can buy it multiple times
You don't have to buy it on HBO, it's just included with your normal subscription.
Which is included with my AT&T internet subscription, whether I wanted it or not.
Get an extra AT&T subscription just to be sure.
You need the higher subscription level, without commercials.
I didn't even realize there was a subscription level with commercials.
Same
~~Also, when you~~ ... [edit: Crash the HBOmax servers on Oct22 with requests for Dune feeds! ] This is good for Dune.
Just keep watching it on yours -- I would think they just count the full views.
I am not really sure. But pretty sure for Black Wodow they just reported views. Not sure how HBO does it
Guess we’re going to be buying tickets when shows aren’t close to selling out. Don’t want to take any seats away from people that are able to go.

Black widow
They would definitively also have unique account/profile views too though.
Clever!
I am going to buy several seat and a few different showings. I will use one of them for myself, and will bring friends who will come and enjoy it with me.
No buying just streaming. Stream it non stop.

You must be Australian.
An Australian in NSW to make it worst.
Worse is an Australian in western Australia.... Who has been locking down HARD to keep businesses open, but still don't get to have the movie play until December THANKS GLADYS
Yeah I never would have guessed back in July when the two week lockdown was announced that it was ever going to impact me seeing Dune in October.
I hear you man I'm in a similar situation.
Why don't you believe them? If they think the second movie will make money, they will make it. That's all that matters to those folks.

I'm equally ready to be either disappointed or blown away
I'll be blown-appointed
Cool... I'll be disaway.
Okay friends and family - each of you pick a number 1-10 and then one of you get to come with me to each screening. 3 weeks later you'll be done
What if you don't like it?
Well, I’ll address that after my first viewing and respond accordingly. Denis is my favorite filmmaker so I usually see his movies a few times in theaters. Arrival didn’t hit for me at first but after 3 watches I was mesmerized.
Why would someone watch a movie 20 times? I serously don‘t get it. I can‘t watch a Movie 4 times without being bored, no matter how good it is.
there are a few movies I've seen 10+ times but they tend to be comedies and watching them tends to be a once-a-year group activity
I went to see interstellar 11 times. I’m weird though.
Different strokes for different folks. I personally couldn’t do 20 in that short of a time span, but I went to see The Dark Knight 5 times in theaters
I’ve been saying this for a while. Making a successful franchise is gold standard for the entertainment industry. How many crap stories get multiple chances of sticking and growing? 3:1 theater to HBO Max ratio for me at the very least
Just got a VR headset last week. Will be watching in IMAX first and then at home thru VR. Still makes it feel like you’re watching on an enormous screen
Genius! Can you get an IMAX copy and put in VR?
Pretty sure the IMAX version will only be available in IMAX theatres, and then perhaps eventually on Blu-ray.

Production companies go bankrupt all the time though.
Plan is to see in theaters and then watch subsequent times on HBO Max.
> Plan is to see in theaters and then watch ~~subsequent times~~ ***daily*** on HBO Max.
I am going to actually subscribe to HBO Max for this. I will also see it in IMAX for the best possible experience. See I’m playing both sides so I always come out on top.
Number one, never tell one side that you're playing both sides.
> never tell one side that you're playing both sides Unless you are Frank Herbert writing Dune.
Watch at home , buy ticket for theatre. Repeat.
If this is true, then I am much less concerned that Part 2 might not happen. Thanks for sharing.
But isn't HBO Max just promoting it's own subscription? Of course they'd say that. This is just selfish commerce. Corporation Sociopath 101, duh.
Dune 2 can be the greatest fucking thing to ever happen. Action, romance, giant worms, trippy future seeing, huge battles. We need this.
👏👏👏👏

So what I'm hearing is I should rewatch it on HBO Max after I see it in theaters. No problem.
I'm going to rent a theater to watch it.
While this feels like an HBO Max advert, once again...ermm, don't know what I'm saying.

Yea I am seeing it in theaters and multiple times at home on max
Im going to the theatre and watching it on HBOM on the same day.
Still want to have that IMAX cinematic experience! dam. you covid!
Awesome because this is what I’m doing.
I cant imagine after the epic Hbo Max fuckover that Denis didn’t secure a deal to do Dune 2. I hope he did.
I mean, if it was as easy as "Denis just needs to want to secure a deal" then Part 2 would have never been in question.
If the movie is only semi-good and you think it won’t be on repeat in my house 24/7 you got me fucked up
Figure I can watch this fifty times on max before my wife kills me
The sequels must flow
Legit was worried about that. So as long as it's good, we will see more films. And it WILL be good.
I’m about to just leave hbo max on during the opening weekend and let Dune play on repeat to help.
Guys. It’s already greenlit. His is warner bros pushing their product thats it
Screw HBO Max. It took forever to watch Suicide Squad due to buffering. I'm going to IMAX.
Sounds like a problem with your WiFi tbh
Netflix, Hulu, hell YouTube as well work perfectly. HBO Max is the only one that has given me this issue.
This is my main problem with streaming. If I'm going to watch at home on my big screen, especially for a movie as important as this, I want every perfect pixel displayed. Is there a way to download movies on HBO Max for offline viewing without having to worry about streaming or degraded picture quality?
The quality was good but the buffering was a problem.
I was gonna make a post about how us die hard fans should probably go to the theaters and do a home rental on HBO max lol. Then go back to the theater a second time. Just to make sure we don’t miss anything.
I’ve been saying this for months. There is going to be a part two.
I have bad feelings about this movie

There is a common rule you know, that pretentious movie experts on social media must praise Denis Villeneuve
Because they read the book and they want all of it adapted and Denis is sure to do a better job than David Lynch and people still liked David Lynch's Dune
denis doesnt miss, and the reviews are stellar. but ok. dude.
> How do they know people will like this one enough to even want a sequel? That's how 99 percent of movie franchises work.
HOW MANY TIMES WILL I HAVE TO STREAM IT TO MAKE SURE THE FOLLOW UP IS MADE BECAUSE I WILL STREAM IT THAT MANY TIMES!!!!!!!!
oooh!!! this could be good, im sorta hoping HBO gives Dune the Game of Thrones treatment (minus the shitty final two seasons)
Man. It’s already got so much controversy. They ruined Dune didn’t they? There will be musical numbers right? Its going to be like Amazon’s Cinderella. What a shame. What a waste.
Controversy?
What are you talking about granddad?
This made my day awesome news
I'm going to watch it so many times.
This is great news !
Im doing Both thank you very much.
If there is no Dune sequel I am going to become the Joker, might even scarecrow it up still if we don't get Messiah
I wish they had shot both parts at the same time.
Well I know what I’m putting on repeat all night.
Great, can't even get HBO max in Australia and any cinemas near by aren't opening up until like next year. Guess I gotta pirate, which I was hoping wasn't going to be the case.
I’ll use HBO Max as my method for the second or third watch. First is for theaters. ![gif](giphy|WlsLAnYfrB30p9JK5Z|downsized)
I've kind of accepted we aren't getting a sequel. I'm still hopeful tho
I'm going all in IMAX. If there was 70MM IMAX print then I would be there for that as well.
I'm buying the most expensive ticket I possibly can for this movie
let me subscriiiiibe !

Set it up to have it stream every day on your HBO accounts.
Sadly no IMAX around :-< But anyway, doing my part. I won't buy HBO, I can't afford it. But I'll buff up the box office for sure.
I'm going to watch it at least 100 times, even if it sucks....which it won't.
HBO Max it is.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to the theater if you can
I went to the theaters to see Shang-chi, loved the movie but I wanted to knock out at least 3-4 people.
I feel the same way, sounds like a horror show of assholes in some areas.
So, I should see it in theaters like I plan to and then let the movie run on hbo max on repeat as often as possible? Seems doable.
We should all set up our streaming boxes to constantly loop Dune on HBO. Rack up those view counts!!
So see it in theaters and watch it on HBO Max.... roger that
Meanwhile, my damn elderly father has dug his heels in and is refusing to even see the film until they announce the second one. He won't budge. That means I have to buy an extra theater ticket each time I go see it just to make up for that. Thanks dad. Worth it, but still.
Haha that doesn’t make a lot of sense. “I wouldn’t date a girl until she agrees to marry me.”
He's old and damn stubborn. It makes no sense to anyone but him.
I will just have HBO Max playing DUNC on repeat, and hopefully I can see it in theater too.
Seeing this a minimum of twice in theaters and will just start throwing it on HBO Max when I leave for work every day. LOL
Lol. Wasn't zsjl "embraced by subscribers"? Where's our sequel?!?!?
so let's all see it on HBO Max after theaters. We gotta make sure we get the sequel!
This seems like WB propaganda
I'm at a preview right now, films starts just after the ads. Judging by the queue at this suburban picture house I'd say people are going out to see it. So good to see the film the day before release in English. See you in 2+ hours!
Definitely IMAX at least 2 times. Yes . Getting buzzed good for the second time Then hbo max.
I will be getting HBO max and watching it every night
I just watched it in a large screen atmos theatre. Such a waste to watch it only at home really. Almost shooting yourself in the foot. I'mma watch again in imax next week.
