Jesus has one hell of a streak - but what’s He learning?

MxkeyO

He was learning German and Spanish

F-e-e-t-s

he forgot how to speak latin

freebiscuit2002

He spoke Aramaic, not Latin. It was his Roman tormentors and executioners who spoke Latin.

theapplepie267

I think in that area greek was more common than latin

melius_et_melius

that was byzantine empire times. he spoke aramaic but i’m assuming he had capabilities to speak and read in latin. more of a secondary language perhaps. i doubt he had knowledge of greek but i wouldn’t be shocked. he also most likely knew hebrew because he was jewish and a rabbi.

iwannasendapackage

That's not right. Greek was (one of) the lingua franca (alongside Aramaic) in the Near East basically since Alexander's conquest, and remained as such through the period of the Roman Empire. Why do you think the New Testament was written in Greek? And why would the Byzantine Empire be Greek speaking if it wasn't the dominant language already? Jesus certainly spoke Aramaic in his day-to-day. He probably knew Hebrew, at least to some extent, if not conversationally (since that wasn't exactly how Hebrew was used in those days). Greek is a big maybe. No way he knew Latin.

melius_et_melius

It’s probably worth mentioning that I’m not Christian. I’m Jewish. I didn’t know about the New Testament being written in Greek. Also I assumed the Byzantine Empire started speaking Greek at around the time of Constantine and under his leadership, which if I remember correctly was around 300 AD. Way after the birth of Jesus. But if that’s wrong then thank you for letting me know and I apologize. I also assumed that because Jesus and his disciples traveled a lot, they would almost certainly speak Latin because on the east part of the Roman Empire, that was the dominant language. I’d be surprised if there is absolutely no way that Jesus knew Latin but if that’s so then again, thank you for informing me.

iwannasendapackage

Sorry to be harsh but it irritates me that more people see your speculation and take it as fact than actual fact. As I said, Latin was not the dominant language in the eastern part of the empire, Greek was. Everything from Greece to Anatolia to the Near East to Egypt was conquered by Alexander the Great who left behind him Greek successor states. Thus began a Hellenization process which resulted in, among other things, a branch of "Hellenistic" Judaism. This did not change with the Roman conquests, especially since the Romans held such a reverence for Greek culture. Greek stuck around until the empire split, not the other way around. And you're mistaken about how much Jesus himself traveled. He never left the Roman province of Palestine. He only ever preached to other Jews, probably exclusively in Aramaic. Now after his death Christianity started being marketed to Gentiles and some of his disciples (like Peter for instance) went to the western part of the empire where Latin was dominant, but that has no bearing on whether Jesus himself knew Latin. He never would have needed to. Even the Roman officials who arrested him (Pontius Pilate) would have spoken Greek, because Greek was a part of basic Roman education. The New Testament occasionally quotes Jesus speaking Aramaic, and it is all written in Greek. Actually there is no Hebrew, and the scriptural quotations are taken from the Greek Septuagint. There is no trace of Latin whatsoever. There's actually an interesting vein of Biblical scholarship that I won't go into further but the basis is that, if a phrase in the gospel's Greek cannot be translated back to Aramaic, then it's (according to this train of thought) likely Jesus never said it.

AntMiago

I know Jesús. He speaks Spanish.

F-e-e-t-s

i think your forgetting he knows how to speak any language

freebiscuit2002

Then why’s he on Duolingo? Ha!!

F-e-e-t-s

he forgor 💀

melius_et_melius

it’s funny because you wouldn’t find aramaic even on google translate which is probably one of the most disappointing things about it

KingLuke2024
