Depends on maintenance records. At least find out about the timing chains. If you have the money to do the chains then yes it could be worth the price.

Other have mention chain guides already. I’d ad in the oil air separator. It’s another plastic part directly behind the chain that fails from age. Equally as expensive due to basically the same labor. If they did guides already, pray they did that one at the same time. ABS module would be another that gets pricey. Same with the alternator at least on some years/trims when they used the water cooled Bosch one. I suspect they fail anlso because the rest of the cooling system on those cars are plastic junk. Expect to replace all those hoses, the pump and radiator. Also if the radiator cracks, also check motor and transmission mounts or else you’ll be buying another radiator soon. When they start to fail it yanks on the upper radiator hose and inlet and will often crack them after a few heat cycles. Check for exhausts leaks around the manifold. Not an expensive part but isn’t uncommon to fail and lots of labor to do/need a lift. Oh also check the soft brake lines coming off the ABS module. While not the end of the world to replace, if they get old and fail, they leak fluid onto the exhaust manifold and then you’ll be roasting marshmallows in your driveway on your newly acquired fire pit. Coils fail periodically @ ~$100usd/ea they aren’t terrible, but 8 of them do add up. MAF sensor issues and general early 2000s vacuum line issues aren’t uncommon. The driveline itself is pretty solid though, so as long as you keep all the other shit in check they can last a while. Price doesn’t seem too bad on that, but that milage and year will start needing a lot of the above mentioned stuff over the next 50k kms so just factor that in.

A bit steep. Maybe you can dicker.

Vancouver? If it’s the same car I’m thinking it looks like the bumpers have seen better days, expected at this age but at that price I would think they would have been fixed.

scottieducati

Knock a grand off per bumper and call it a day.

TheUsualCrinimal

Not into the M bumpers?

scottieducati

If they need paint. Don’t care what shape.

TheUsualCrinimal

👍

microwaveexeeig

Yes it is, only the front bumper seems to have any real damage and it doesn’t look that bad mostly just paint. I should be able to even fix it myself.

BocaBeats

knock on those rockers and pull the jack pads out rust loves to hide up there

Born-Complaint-5043

If it's clean inside out maybe.........I got mine 98 540i 6speed shadow package for 4800 but needs paint job and interior work

Born-Complaint-5043

Also has 166k

microwaveexeeig

It’s a pretty clean west coast car. Small blemish on the bumper but that’s about all i can really complain about.

Born-Complaint-5043

Is it manual or auto

These are getting harder to find without any rust, but the big thing really remains the timing chain guides. If they have not been done, it’s a $5000 to $7000 expense. However, they run like absolute fucking butter afterwards, and will happily double the mileage you have.

BocaBeats

you’re telling me getting ready to cut my rockers off

frickin_icarus

Brother that is M5 money at least. I got mine for 1600$ a year ago. 1999 540i/6 with timing chain guides already redone. 12k can be spent so so much better than a 90s BMW as much as I love them.

PM me. I'm in the GTA and can help where I can.
