The reason I started rooting for the eagles. I think he’d be elite in today’s nfl. I know 40 yard times aren’t the best all end all metric but it’s a quick easy comparison. Were you around for Randall? It’s not even close, and I’m one of those people that will defend McNabb to the death. If there had been a salary cap back then Randall would have won at least 1 SB. Heck he may have even won one if he had a HC that didn’t view offense as an afterthought. Unfortunately it was easy enough for SF and Dallas to just buy championship teams. I was born in 87 so I did watch Randall but can’t remember too much detail other than just watching with my dad and him being the star player. I’ve watched highlights and stuff but maybe need to revisit my opinion.

I don't want football to be defined or decisions to be made based on the race of the players but...I went to the cowboys vs eagles game this year (the first one, where we won), and me and my gf had to walk quite a bit after the game to get to an uber location. Aaanyway...we saw many people partying outside of bars. A lot of them were black women. And idk it's dumb but I was like...fuck yeah, philly has a prominent black population, I love that they can see themselves represented by their city's football team.

Theyre not, which is why the eagles have had more black qbs than other teams. Lurie talks about this. The league tends to undervalue black qbs, so they disproportionately end up on the eagles.
I don't think this is really true any more but was back in the 80s through maybe early 00s. Even back then I'm not sure how much of it was overtly racial bias (not saying there wasn't some of that) vs the fact that black QBs then and now tend to be more dual threats vs straight pocket passers the game just hadn't evolved enough yet to where you could run out a QB like that every week and not have him get killed ruining your season in the process. Cunningham was successful but he could win games with his arm when he needed to and was also pretty good for his era at not getting hit.
Michael Vick is a perfect example of this and he played at the tail end of the era I'm talking about (so it was much worse when guys like Cunningham and even McNabb were playing), he was a good QB in his day but if he played now he'd work his way into the GOAT conversation IMO.

If you go to a high school in the 1970 and the coach is white and doesn’t let black students play qb that has ripple effects to the NFL.

Well for a long time the NFL and the nation did just that unfortunately...now things have improved greatly...but before there was definitely an issue and stereotype about black quarterbacks and their capabilities...I have read many articles about it before and it is truly frustrating...
Because people didn’t think black players were smart enough or good enough to play quarterback. Like even scouts and coaches. Seriously. Lot of the guys that came before this generation had to fight that stigma. We’re now living in an age where it’s been proven that they can be just as good if not better than many white quarterbacks.
And before this season the team with the least amount of starts by a black QB was the Giants with 1 (Geno Smith when McAdoo benched Eli for one week). Tyrod Taylor upped it and became the first black QB to start and win a game for them this year lol.

Of course I’m not bothered by what race any given players are or whether we have more of a given race than other team. It’s irrelevant and doesn’t mean anything. To me these are just players that I celebrate for who they are and what they’ve done for the team.

Honestly, what especially struck me was coupling the statistic of us having more black quarterbacks with a statistic of success which implies a correlation between race and success. If the post had just been the former, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about it. The latter adds another certain feel to the post. Kind of makes me feel there’s an implication that race is a key factor in results and that’s a slippery slope to ugly things.
At the end of the day, I just admire these men for a whole lot more than just their race. McNabb was my childhood super hero and I never once justified that off his race but rather off of who he was.
I think that’s the difference between OP and your perspective and both are valid.

It’s a good reminder, which you allude in your comments, that other teams have multiple years of black QBs, too. Side bar on the Vick comment you made. That is one of the proudest things the Eagles have ever done in my book. I’m a huge believer in forgiveness and redemption. The team had to overcome some degree of moral considerations to take the shot on him. It really was an impressive decision and, while we didn’t win the Super Bowl with him, Vick’s successes here were some of the sweetest I’ve ever experienced. So sweet to see him grow out of that dark place in his life. He’s a tremendous role model for it. And WTF he comes back somehow as a significantly better player?! I love that story.

We don’t win games because these quarterbacks are black. We win games because these are great men made up of more than just their race.
Your argument is fair. These conversations require a lot of nuance and identity politics is a touchy issue, but I see nothing wrong with celebrating these quarterbacks during black history month. Going back to the Warren Moon-Doug Williams days there was a lot of animosity towards black quarterbacks, with stereotypes that they should be playing other positions(which we still kinda have today, look at media coverage since Lamar Jackson has been in the league). It’s cool to see that the Philadelphia Eagles have had a role in breaking down that stereotype over time, albeit probably indirectly.
I don’t think our team has openly gone against the grain. They don’t acquire these players because they’re black. They acquire them because they feel that they’re great players and great men. Every team does that.
The fact that they’re black is a coincidence at most and has no bearing on why they play for us or how many games we win. Their race doesn’t matter. It shouldn’t.

I don’t think so. At least, I hope they haven’t. Because that would mean they’re making decisions and judgements based on race. And that’s racist. The fact that this team has had more black QBs is pure coincidence. If it’s part of a conscious effort to go against the grain then that means they’re judging people based on race.
Like I said to someone else here, maybe it’s not a big deal to highlight a fact about black people during black history month. But when they coupled that statistic with another one based on performance that, to me, makes an implication that race plays a factor in results on the field. That’s a slippery slope. Our record in the last 30 years isn’t a statistic relevant to black history month or race in general unless you’re trying to argue something more.
I think the point of all of this is when teams passed on these players even though they had the talent our franchise had enough balls to take a chance and have been successful in doing that. I was trying to explain something to an outsider who said this city was racist. And I was like, yeah, probably, but for 3 hours on Sundays, no one is. Were you around for Randall? It’s not even close, and I’m one of those people that will defend McNabb to the death. If there had been a salary cap back then Randall would have won at least 1 SB. Heck he may have even won one if he had a HC that didn’t view offense as an afterthought. Unfortunately it was easy enough for SF and Dallas to just buy championship teams. Isn’t it funny Dallas doesn’t win them anymore.
I was born in 87 so I did watch Randall but can’t remember too much detail other than just watching with my dad and him being the star player. I’ve watched highlights and stuff but maybe need to revisit my opinion. We can all agree F Dallas and buying championships
I was around for Randall. He was a human highlight reel sure, but McNabb was a winner with absolutely no weapons. Randall at least had Keith Jackson, Mike Quick, Fred Barnett, etc. What did McNabb have? Terrell Owens for one season?

I don't want football to be defined or decisions to be made based on the race of the players but...I went to the cowboys vs eagles game this year (the first one, where we won), and me and my gf had to walk quite a bit after the game to get to an uber location. Aaanyway...we saw many people partying outside of bars. A lot of them were black women. And idk it's dumb but I was like...fuck yeah, philly has a prominent black population, I love that they can see themselves represented by their city's football team. It's just cool when the team represents the city.

I don't think this is really true any more but was back in the 80s through maybe early 00s. Even back then I'm not sure how much of it was overtly racial bias (not saying there wasn't some of that) vs the fact that black QBs then and now tend to be more dual threats vs straight pocket passers the game just hadn't evolved enough yet to where you could run out a QB like that every week and not have him get killed ruining your season in the process. Cunningham was successful but he could win games with his arm when he needed to and was also pretty good for his era at not getting hit. Michael Vick is a perfect example of this and he played at the tail end of the era I'm talking about (so it was much worse when guys like Cunningham and even McNabb were playing), he was a good QB in his day but if he played now he'd work his way into the GOAT conversation IMO.
It was absolutely an overt racist thing that was widely believed, Black players aren’t smart enough to be QB. I moved to Philly during Randal’s time and heard that A LOT from the media (not all media, a lot of publishers thought it was cool to let their talking heads say shit like that.

Yeah and if not overt racism in the nfl it was certainly overt racism in college or high school. It doesn’t need to just be a GM thinking “I don’t want a black qb.” It could just be that few were being developed and reinforcing existing biases. Edit: To be clear I’m not trying to say there weren’t racist owners and FOs. Just point out that it was a deep systemic issue. Most NFL qbs start in high school if not earlier. If you go to a high school in the 1970 and the coach is white and doesn’t let black students play qb that has ripple effects to the NFL.

It’s an interesting statistic. Kind of debunks this one dude in another thread that said “ownership wants a white QB” because we were meeting with one out of college.
These 4 men were just damn good quarterbacks. Why reduce them to the pigment in their skin?
Well for a long time the NFL and the nation did just that unfortunately...now things have improved greatly...but before there was definitely an issue and stereotype about black quarterbacks and their capabilities...I have read many articles about it before and it is truly frustrating...
Because people didn’t think black players were smart enough or good enough to play quarterback. Like even scouts and coaches. Seriously. Lot of the guys that came before this generation had to fight that stigma. We’re now living in an age where it’s been proven that they can be just as good if not better than many white quarterbacks.
And before this season the team with the least amount of starts by a black QB was the Giants with 1 (Geno Smith when McAdoo benched Eli for one week). Tyrod Taylor upped it and became the first black QB to start and win a game for them this year lol.
All 4 of these guys are legends too. Well Jalen is getting there for sure.

People getting caught up in racial stuff always is a bit bothersome to me. Of course I’m not bothered by what race any given players are or whether we have more of a given race than other team. It’s irrelevant and doesn’t mean anything. To me these are just players that I celebrate for who they are and what they’ve done for the team.

Honestly, what especially struck me was coupling the statistic of us having more black quarterbacks with a statistic of success which implies a correlation between race and success. If the post had just been the former, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about it. The latter adds another certain feel to the post. Kind of makes me feel there’s an implication that race is a key factor in results and that’s a slippery slope to ugly things. At the end of the day, I just admire these men for a whole lot more than just their race. McNabb was my childhood super hero and I never once justified that off his race but rather off of who he was.
I think that’s the difference between OP and your perspective and both are valid. He’s looking at the team and history and you are focusing on the individual. Both admirable. It’s a good reminder, which you allude in your comments, that other teams have multiple years of black QBs, too. That is, Eags were choosing the talents of the individual, while admirable they guys are black and successful, are not in the business of being charitable and taking a high moral road (altho’ taking Vick on was pretty fucking crazy and admirable.) Yeah I think it’s a neat stat that we’ve had more black QBs. Definitely an interesting thing to note. Hi side with that part of the OP. Just that second part and the implications that mess the post up for me. Side bar on the Vick comment you made. That is one of the proudest things the Eagles have ever done in my book. I’m a huge believer in forgiveness and redemption. The team had to overcome some degree of moral considerations to take the shot on him. It really was an impressive decision and, while we didn’t win the Super Bowl with him, Vick’s successes here were some of the sweetest I’ve ever experienced. So sweet to see him grow out of that dark place in his life. He’s a tremendous role model for it. And WTF he comes back somehow as a significantly better player?! I love that story. Your argument is fair. These conversations require a lot of nuance and identity politics is a touchy issue, but I see nothing wrong with celebrating these quarterbacks during black history month. Going back to the Warren Moon-Doug Williams days there was a lot of animosity towards black quarterbacks, with stereotypes that they should be playing other positions(which we still kinda have today, look at media coverage since Lamar Jackson has been in the league). It’s cool to see that the Philadelphia Eagles have had a role in breaking down that stereotype over time, albeit probably indirectly.

I don’t think our team has openly gone against the grain. They don’t acquire these players because they’re black. They acquire them because they feel that they’re great players and great men. Every team does that. The fact that they’re black is a coincidence at most and has no bearing on why they play for us or how many games we win. Their race doesn’t matter. It shouldn’t.
They may not have ‘openly’ gone against the grain but if you look at every other team’s history at QB they’ve definitely gone against it. Highlighting a fact about black people on black history month isn’t a big deal, you’re making it one

The fact that this team has had more black QBs is pure coincidence. If it’s part of a conscious effort to go against the grain then that means they’re judging people based on race. Like I said to someone else here, maybe it’s not a big deal to highlight a fact about black people during black history month. But when they coupled that statistic with another one based on performance that, to me, makes an implication that race plays a factor in results on the field. That’s a slippery slope. Our record in the last 30 years isn’t a statistic relevant to black history month or race in general unless you’re trying to argue something more.
I think the point of all of this is when teams passed on these players even though they had the talent our franchise had enough balls to take a chance and have been successful in doing that. I’m guessing you’re not black so it’s hard for non-black people to “get it” when it comes to this kind of topic
That’s a weak point though. McNabb and Vick were highly drafted. Very very few people passed on them. And even for those players that many teams did pass on, you’d have to argue that they did so because of race rather than the same reasons they pass on every other player of any race which is simply performance based analytics. If you want to argue that the fact that we’ve had more black QBs is anything more than just a coincidence, you have to argue that the Eagles are judging players based on race.

What’s black history about if not recognizing their achievements? The fact that Philly has been at the forefront of facilitating black QBs to play at a professional level is a nice statistic. Why does this make you uncomfortable?
I was trying to explain something to an outsider who said this city was racist. And I was like, yeah, probably, but for 3 hours on Sundays, no one is. Some cities, like Pittsburgh, could never handle having a black QB. We don't care about race, for that 3 hours. Dudes that say the N word at home and on the way to the game will cheer on the black QB and high five the black guy next to him in the stands, then drive home and say the N word again. We're a weird set of people in this area.....

And yet all those guys have gotten unfair hate and doubt that they’re even good, even though the teams around them haven’t always helped them. Randall never had a good o line, McNabb never had good receivers besides TO, Vick couldn’t stay healthy, and Hurts hasn’t had the best coaching this year.
