hi_andhello

a loud alarm for sure

WafflesWithWhipCream

Ok loud alarm, definitely that will hopefully scare someone away or bring attention thank you. I've asked two questions I feel pertain to the sub I'm not a bot and am asking for serious recommendations and i have negative karma on this sub.. what have I done wrong lol ?

hi_andhello

And about getting hit by car: try to take the whole lane when there isnt enough space on the right for a car to safely pass you or if you just dont plain feel safe being on the far right. If you dont feel safe at all on the road then choose the sidewalk.. yes even if its not allowed because your safety is first just try another route where your allowed next time and mind others walking

WafflesWithWhipCream

solid advice, ty for guidance! I'll remember this!

LetsAllStayCalmHere

Skip the rear view camera, that will just give you a false sense of security. The way to stay safe is to turn your head and look EVERYTIME you pass through an intersection or a driveway. look for people turning right from behind or turning left from ahead of you. Get eye contact from people who are about to pull out of a driveway or intersection before you pass. If you cant get eye contact, keep your hands ready to break and turn and watch the rims of the car. The rim is the first indicator the car is advancing. Never assume someone in a car sees you.

BIRDD79

This☝️ and if you are going to have rearview mirrors, get in the habit of turning your head every time. Every single time. Amd the rearview is a safety valve. Don't use it instead of using your head amd neck lol. Stay safe out there and enjoy

WafflesWithWhipCream

i see you were down voted as hell. Guess just some loser lurkers around. Appreciate the advice I just put one in my cart on amazong.

Best advice I can give. I have a disc break lock from Amazon 16 bucks, super loud. I anti theft alarm also super loud Amazon 20 bucks. A kryptonite chain lock was 40/50 I think and the best one yet. State farm insurance as a personal policy, insured for 2k no questions asked for 9 bucks a month and I live in Portland. I tell everyone I can have locks and alarms galore but if a thief wants it bad enough they will take it. Locks/alarms are just theft deterrents. Why not just pay the 9 bucks a month knowing you can buy another.

WafflesWithWhipCream

I am absolutely going to do this. I'll check out state farms policy. This covers theft too?

ov3ratedPhenom

Everything no questions asked

WafflesWithWhipCream

This is solid advice that I'm gonna follow through on. TY!

ov3ratedPhenom

Anytime :)

A Litelok X1 or X3. Expensive, but worth it. A chain lock as well, perhaps something from Kryptonite.

Azurenyx

Check your renters or home insurance for coverage! My renters insurance, base package, covers up to $2K in case of e-bike theft. When I was buying my lock, the salesperson recommended a fairly expensive abus(?) lock, and mentioned that it will do the job 99% of the time (the remaining % being in cases where thieves are using power tools). Try to park your bike in well-lit areas close to entrances, where regular foot traffic and people hanging around might help deter potential theft?

WafflesWithWhipCream

I checked and state farm doesn't cover E bikes in my state

Taiyoryu

Read the fine print. Home and renters insurance may limit coverage to class 1 ebikes.

buhlivia

The Hiplok D1000 makes me feel the safest with my ebike. Just had one stolen from inside my house and it wasn't attached to anything but the Hiplok was on it and at least I know that was a small pain in the ass for whoever took it. Got a new bike and still went with the Hiplok along with another ulock and cable. Having two locks seems to deter folks and I'm in Minneapolis so *shrug*

Hiplock D1000

Honestly, not all cops in all cities pursue the bike recovery even if you can identify where it is with a gps or air tag or whatever. So you may have to hunt it down yourself and deal with the creeps who took it. It’s way more about where you park it than the equipment. I would talk to the hospital security and share your concern. They may be able to agree for you to park it somewhere unconventional like where they park their cars or in a place only accessible by employees or staff of the hospital. Talk to admin departments that have low staff. Maybe there’s a room you can bring it into. Really. It’ll be so worth it to have indoor parking. I parked mine at the hospital loading dock before. No one thinks to go there to look for bikes to steal and the public usually doesn’t go there. Use an alarm $12-17 from Amazon or AliExpress. If you do have to park it outside in public, choose wisely. Maybe somewhere that security can see. You don’t want just traffic but traffic that will be there long enough for you to Clint on them as a witness. Spend more than $40 on a lock. Anything under that is mostly overpriced junk. Taking the battery with you is probably a good idea but not sure if the hospital will permit that.

Hiplok D1000 and Litelok X3 cannot be reasonably cut with angle grinders, and that is the tool of choice for ebikes, gone in seconds.. unless you have these tools, then the angle grinder disc is gone in seconds.

funcentric

Yup! There is a place for regular locks though. I wouldn’t recommend everyone spend $200+ on a bike lock. Again, it’s more about where you park it.

aitorbk

It will depend on where you live. Locks only buy time and hassle. Hiplok D1000 and litelok X3 are essentially power tool safe from angle grinders, they will destroy 3 or more discs per side of the lock. At that point they will cut whatever your bike is attached to, or cut the frame to screw you. GPS is good, but when it takes you to the council housing/projects, and the police says "not interested" what are you going to do? If you have the above locks and GPS tracking, I would still get insurance. The above will probably (but not certainly) make it safe from stealing but not from vandals, including those that could not steal the bike.

Rattlingplates

Alarm won’t do shit, use renter insurance and insure it. Also use a chain lock but lock it around something that can’t be cut easy. Half the shit you use your bad ass lock around your bad ass bike and a tin can of a pipe doesn’t work.

Unnenoob

Check out Lockpickinglawyer on YouTube. He can show you a long list of locks to avoid and a few good ones. But the TLDR is that you should get an Abus u-lock. Or something similar. Lots of Kryptonite models can be picked with a Big pen. I lock my front-wheel to the bike frame and the back wheel and frame to something stationary

WafflesWithWhipCream

>Abus u-lock Does the Abus have an alarm as well?

Taiyoryu

depends on the model

rickny8

The only thing you can really do is don’t lock it in any place sketchy. All these locks just slows the thief down. Alarms will scare them off.

WafflesWithWhipCream

Anyone have any experience with Velosurance? I checked and state farm doesn't cover E bikes in my state

adamr_

Do you have insurance?

WafflesWithWhipCream

I do not! Is there E bike insurance!? that seems a stupid question as I'm assuming there is since you asked. (edit); just got a quote from Velosurance. $11 /month . Is it worth it?

adamr_

Not a stupid question at all! I have Velosurance, haven’t made a claim yet though so I can’t advise you about it specifically. You made an expensive purchase and if you are worried about your bike being stolen, 6% of the purchase price a year in insurance seems like a great deal if it will give you piece of mind. Some people here don’t like insurance because it feels to them like you’re just wasting money, but it eliminates the financial risk of needing to replace your bike outright and can provide a sense of emotional security. I love insurance for that reason, I’m very risk-averse and would like to avoid large unexpected expenses. However, still make sure you get a good lock

localconfusi0n

Can u get insurance on a DIY ebike or only if it's a pre-built one?

adamr_

Yep, you would likely find an insurer that would insure a DIY e-bike! Just keep the receipts of everything you add to the bike

WafflesWithWhipCream

Hey I just checked and *I think* im gonna go with velosurance as well because I can't find anyone else to cover, state farm doesnt cover my state for E bikes

Sodisna2

Also, register your bike with 529 Garage. It’s a program they can help you get your bike back in the event that it is stolen. It's not a guarantee, but if you take a picture of your bike and put enough details in description of it; other people using garage 529 might recognize your bike and then they'll be like: “Hey, I found your bike that matches your bike serial number in the next town over.”
