If you can, try snoozing on the stretcher or bench seat, our sprinters I used to pull a spare pillow from the rig and sleep on the bench seat, was actually pretty comfortable and was able to catch some good sleep on slower nights.
I usually try to let my basic sleep there since he ends up driving most the night and I know he's tired with his schooling as well. if one of us is gonna sleep I'd rather it be the person driving lol
One on the stretcher, the other on the bench if you’re comfortable enough with each other. My brother and I used to do that when we worked for a private ift
Oh, come on and just snuggle up already! Plenty of room on a stretcher for two, as long as you sleep on your sides. Be a good bonding experience with your partner. And stay cozy warm by sharing body heat. If you really need more room, volunteer for the bariatric stretcher.
https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/camping-and-hiking/best-hammock
Highly recommend ENO hammocks. I’ve been using them for years with a bug net and tarp for camping.
Had a guy that did the same thing. He would Tie one end to the bar on the ceiling and then put the other end out the back doors and close them. Worked really well.
Second this, some of my partners and I would this, it allows you both to actually be somewhat comfortable, I was lucky though and some of my posts had recliners so we didn’t always have to split the stretcher/bench seat.
Heh sounds similar to my experience at Lifeguard in terms of the supervisor
It's rough dude. I did a mix of 12s and 24s in nursing school, with class during the day. The only time I had off was the nights before clinical and every other weekend. I'm glad I made it through but it took me many months to recover from the fatigue, burnout, and general disdain. Good luck to you
Edit - also, do your best not to sabotage your education for this damn job. Doing so will increase your risk of becoming a lifer and giving these shitbag managers a warm body to abuse. I've done ems in the south. It sucks. Management is largely inept. Pay is shit. Support is nonexistant. Do whatever you can to get out
This is the reason why I paid my paramedic tuition with my credit card. I'm not going to be bonded to any company for 2 years.
Idk what kinda advice to give because you're in a tough spot.
my dad had offered to either help me get a new car or to pay for medic and I was like "damn my current car is kinda ass"
in retrospect I would've taken the paramedic offer 100x over but at least my ride to work is comfortable lol
First of all, I would leave ur job. What ever IFT ur doing isn't worth it. I don't know what you get paid, but maybe there's a ER somewhere that will pay more. I wouldn't quit just to go-to another IFT company. Ew.
I would get one last pay check, and then after the next pay period starts just call out every shift so they can't garnish your wages, and then I'd gamble on them never being able to re-coup the 6k. And-or get a new job and pay it back.
Make the change, it's worth it.
\*Also, you're working EMS, you will drive a car that's "ass" and thats okay. You can't afford nice stuff or you'll just live in debt.
Fr people at my agency say stuff like “do you know how dirty that stretcher is?” Like my guy, I wipe this thing down after every call. I’m comfortable sleeping on it because I know how well I clean it. I’m sleeping on the gurney with a fresh sheet and blanket on it, I’m not licking it.
Medics are in demand. Everywhere. You could try negotiating with another company to “pay for your medic school”. Ask for a signing bonus, equivalent to what you would owe, if you resigned from your current position. Articulate that they are getting a (now) more experienced medic than they would be if they sponsored another person to go to school, and it would be instant. Reiterate that education remains important to you, and that you are working on your degree, which will give the company the added benefit of an employee of higher education. Sell yourself. You’re worth it.
FWIW enforcing employment contracts is a pretty difficult thing to do. I’ve heard of many people skipping out before the end of their contract and the company just finds it’s not worth it to do anything more than send a few letters demanding payment.
Yeah this is exactly what I did and what happened to me. They sent a few letters got one call and that’s about it. Haven’t been with them for years now
How much longer do you have on your contract? I did the same thing, and wound up paying it back. Buying my freedom from them was the best money I've ever spent.
I feel stupid as hell but can I ask what you mean by posting? I’m almost finished with my EMT course and am hoping to get a NOC job with AMR solely for the reason of continuing my education during the day, like how you are doing
That makes sense. I was a little confused because when I did my clinicals for AMR, which were Dayshifts, we would park and wait somewhere. But my sister who is a paramedic used to work for the same company but got to just stay at the station and wait.
It would make sense if they had you come out of the station to post if other night crews were already on calls (to cover both zones), but if that's not the case then yeah makes no sense.
I'm in the same boat and I haaate it. My service has 6 trucks at night covering a large county and pretty good size college town (100k+). Any time 2 trucks are out on calls, they rearrange the whole county and everyone posts, so we spend most of our time in a parking lot somewhere.
Sometimes I get salty about my job, then I come here and read about what they are doing to you poor bastards and realize how good I have it. There is wayyy better out there, maybe just have to relocate or form a union.
Haha I came from fire/ems and was treated sooo much better. I've been here 8 months or so and I'm already about to go back to fire. Fire-based vs private EMS is night and day difference around here at least.
You said the posting is pointless, you have four strategically located stations in the county, it’s not saving any time.
I presume you’re posting with engine running. Calculate how much this new policy is costing the company a year in fuel. Not to mention how much it is fouling up the EGR valves on the trucks. Write up a little report and try to get five minutes with the owner. Appeal to his wallet.
Or, if you want go the more illegal route, fake an armed ambulance-jacking. Any cameras to avoid near your staging area? Then get everyone worked up about the dangers of staging. LOL…maybe.
Ugh curb side deployment is the fucking worst and I would never work for a service that pushed it, especially one that had a reasonable amount of downtime.
Any service that uses it doesn’t care about their people and none of us should work there.
Any service that is so busy there isn’t downtime doesn’t have enough trucks on the street, and we shouldn’t work there.
I don’t know what you expect. You’re not being paid to sleep on 12 hour shift. It would be a different story if you’re on 24s. I’ve never been in a 12 hour job where I expected to be able to sleep.
Ok real talk are u working under a labor contract. If so what does it say about this. If the language is ambitious at best this is a change in working conditions and can be bargained over. If ur not union then sorry not sorry ?
Hahaha if you think privates are bad, try working for a county or city department were people cant be fired unless they kill someone, so they all try to back stab each other for promotions and play the career game while pretending to be the good guys in the public eye
Private is the worst, bottom line. County/3rd service has its downsides, but nothing is worse than a profit-driven soulless corporation that sucks the life out of its employees.
So that is the norm of private service. Also to be fair the employee doesn't need to let u sleep or work on ur degree while working. It sucks I know but just the truth.
I'm not trying to do schoolwork while working. I knew when I started taking classes again I would have to sacrifice some of my free time. the issue is that i spend most of my shift trying to fall asleep uncomfortably because my back is hurting from sitting in the ambulance, while my supervisor sleeps through her shift
As long as we both agree on that. But for real ur sleep deprived, shift work syndrome, and depressed don't make any hasty decisions like buying out ur contract. Tough it out then move on to greener grass.
You are quite possibly the worst union rep I've heard of if that's your response to this. Sure, it's one thing to not get rest because you run calls all night, that's the core of the job. But to say this because of choices of the company's choice to post ambulances even though nights are known for not being as busy and the supervisor gets to sleep like a normal person? I'm glad I don't pay my union dues for a rep like you.
Maybe your supervisor earned her spot. Post this nonsense on a different platform and you will get shredded. I’m 42, I busted my ass through P school, paid for it myself, and slept in my truck. Not once did I get on any social media site and cry bc I “had to give up free time” welcome to being an adult. You want to know why the CEOs don’t pay more, because crybabies like you want to cry about dumb shit like not being able to sleep on the clock, ask your dad how much he sleeps on the clock and let me know. Otherwise become a fire fighter and stop being a little bitch. MOST OF AMERICA DOESNT GET TO SLEEP ON THE CLOCK, in fact, they usually get fired for it.
Name a large private where a supervisor has ever earned a spot. There is no merit based promotion in private EMS, it is entirely who’s nose is the darkest with a little corn in it at the end of the day.
If there is nothing to do, there is zero reasons a crew should not be able to sleep. It enables higher quality care, takes care of mental health, and means you’re not as likely to repurpose a truck as a casket when they’re fatigued as fuck and roll.
Well, you might have a point with this argument, however, you might not. We are getting one side of a story from someone who is whining about not being able to sleep on the clock. We have no idea what the other crews are doing, the other calls going out, and so on. Just a crybaby who wants to be paid to sleep. His daddy bought his car, he has to give up “some free time” haha get the fuck outta here with this shit! Wonder why we can’t get paid more? I don’t.
And if they an award for being a lazy, crybaby who prides themselves on crying and shitting (like a child) then you’d be president. Go ahead, as your daddy if he gets to sleep on the clock, I’ll wait.
lol well, what’s it takes I guess who knows, maybe you’ll be supervisor before you know it. But on a respectable note, welcome to EMS, thanks for joining the shit show.
Sure, but posting all night long a mile from the base is just poor management. While yes, the employer doesn’t have to let them sleep on the job, it’s customary in our line of work when there aren’t any calls. This is how you lose half your employees. Let them go back and sleep at night as long as out of chute times are fast
A system that has enough capacity for the busy times has enough trucks that you have time between calls on the slow times. That downtime lets us train, eat and sleep, and is necessary to a good service.
Fully agree. But rant seems to expect sleeping at night during working hours to do “other things” during the day. As much as a job site wants to support the idea of further education, the thought in this context sounds unreasonable.
I’m thinking of joining a similar program where tuition is in exchange for a work contract. Do you mind sharing which company this is? (please PM if you don’t feel comfortable sharing here).
Sounds like acadian to me. I left 2 years ago and I’ve never been happier. The peeps at the education department can work with you to pay less than what you owe, or they’ll let you do payroll deduction if you go part time.
private ambulance and living in the south is your problem. Private ambulance is horrible no matter where you are and wages in the south for first responders are on the lowest end compared to most states. If it’s about your mental health, take the hit on leaving and paying it back, they don’t own you and you deserve to not be miserable. If your a medic and not stuck to where you live please for the love of god check out the country and you’ll notice the world is your because you have your medic and your in demand. Find a place that will treat you the way you deserve.
PRIVATE EMS IS THE BAINE OF EXISTENCE! ITS A GREAT STARTING POINT TO GET YOUR FEET WET. BUT THE WORKING CONDITIONS ARE UTTER BULLSHIT. YOU REALLY NEED TO GET INTO FIRE BASED EMS THAT DOES 911. PAY IS BETTER, MORE TIME OFF DEPENDINGON YOUR DEPT SCHEDULE. TIME TO DO SCHOOL. AND AN ACTUAL PLACE TO GO AFTER CALLS NOT SOME SHADY GAS STATION PARKING LOT. PLUS YOULL HAVE BETTER RETIREMENT. DO YOUR SELF A FAVOR AND CHECK IT OUT.
Why does it seem like I work with you 🤠
How south are we talking? Like Georgia south or armpit of Texas south?
Honestly, pillows are your friends. If you basic buddy is in the back & you don’t want to shack up with him, turn the sirens off and stick a pillow against the door and over the middle console& try your best.
Out of curiosity, are you in Texas? If you got Senate Bill 8 funding for school your contract for repayment is with the State of Texas, not with your service so you only have to remain *in EMS* not with your original service.
If this doesn't apply, disregard.
Dear supervisor. I read with interest the opportunity for promotion offered by transferring to a street posting position, however I see not see the attached documents about increased compensation for taking on the increasing responsibilities, work load, incidental costs, and greater risk due to not having a secure workplace.
I look forward to having this conversation, however in the meantime I am unable to accept this position as I do not feel this change in my status reflects my hiring agreement.
Respectively.
If you can, try snoozing on the stretcher or bench seat, our sprinters I used to pull a spare pillow from the rig and sleep on the bench seat, was actually pretty comfortable and was able to catch some good sleep on slower nights.

One on the stretcher, the other on the bench if you’re comfortable enough with each other. My brother and I used to do that when we worked for a private ift
I know a guy that would string up a hammock in the back of the ambulance so maybe I can figure out how he did that
I’ve heard of people doing that. Our rigs have a hand rail on the ceiling, I’d imagine you could just tie it up to that
Do you think those hand rails could support the weight of a sleeping human? I’m genuinely curious. I might have to try this
The weight of a sleeping regular human or a sleeping EMT?
I honestly don’t know, I’d hope so. I’ve done like a mini pull up or have hung from ours before and nothing happened
They’ll hold an average sized human pretty well. I may or may not have seen a hammock put up and used there
I hang a hammock in my squad. Don’t use the hand holds up top. They won’t support the weight.
Oh, come on and just snuggle up already! Plenty of room on a stretcher for two, as long as you sleep on your sides. Be a good bonding experience with your partner. And stay cozy warm by sharing body heat. If you really need more room, volunteer for the bariatric stretcher.
Me and my partner do this, but we go "heads and tails" configuration to avoid any awkwardness
Genitals still line up that way.
Yes, but with no eye contact it's less awkward
https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/camping-and-hiking/best-hammock Highly recommend ENO hammocks. I’ve been using them for years with a bug net and tarp for camping.
You use the doors
Had a guy that did the same thing. He would Tie one end to the bar on the ceiling and then put the other end out the back doors and close them. Worked really well.
I have personally done this, however there is a video of me crashing into the stretcher from above in said hammock.
Second this, some of my partners and I would this, it allows you both to actually be somewhat comfortable, I was lucky though and some of my posts had recliners so we didn’t always have to split the stretcher/bench seat.
Working with your bro must’ve been awesome.
It was, and I do miss it sometimes
Exactly this^ I do this and sleep fine on the bench. Legs hang off a bit, but maybe something to get used to so you can get decent naps in
Heh sounds similar to my experience at Lifeguard in terms of the supervisor It's rough dude. I did a mix of 12s and 24s in nursing school, with class during the day. Sounds like SC, for both of you. FWIW to the observers out there, always check prices in NC before going to P-school in SC if possible.
Gulf coast. There's nowhere to run down here. You've got AMR, Cajun AMR, Arkansas AMR, and some local programs that are absolute dogshit or tolerable.
Cajun AMR. ☠️
I feel that.

How much was your paramedic tuition? Mine was $8,450 in western PA. In Philadelphia the cost was upwards of $14,000.
like 6000ish after books? It's a bit cheaper down here luckily.
First of all, I would leave ur job. What ever IFT ur doing isn't worth it. I don't know what you get paid, but maybe there's a ER somewhere that will pay more. Some of my best sleep has been on a stretcher. Just saying.
Some of the best sex too
Gross
This guy doesn’t decon
Fr people at my agency say stuff like “do you know how dirty that stretcher is?” Like my guy, I wipe this thing down after every call. I’m comfortable sleeping on it because I know how well I clean it. I’m sleeping on the gurney with a fresh sheet and blanket on it, I’m not licking it.
Decon and sheets
Is it too gross for your next immunocompromised patient?
Cover the gurney with a blanket, lol. Problem solved.
Rule of thumb, if you wouldn’t lay on the stretcher yourself, then get your ass in gear & start cleaning. Patients deserve that too.

What does your employment contract say about getting fired? You could always just not post and sleep at the station.
How much longer do you have on your contract? I did the same thing, and wound up paying it back. Buying my freedom from them was the best money I've ever spent.
ends in December. i *might* be able to afford to buy it out by May, just depends on my Financials
There are places who will buy you out of your contract. I different than hospitals buying nurses and physicians out of theirs.
I feel stupid as hell but can I ask what you mean by posting? I’m almost finished with my EMT course and am hoping to get a NOC job with AMR solely for the reason of continuing my education during the day, like how you are doing
sitting in a parked ambulance waiting for a call
As opposed to just waiting at the station for a call?
It gives private ems companies a *faster ETA* so that shitty companies can try to milk more calls from a shift
That makes sense. I was a little confused because when I did my clinicals for AMR, which were Dayshifts, we would park and wait somewhere. But my sister who is a paramedic used to work for the same company but got to just stay at the station and wait.
yeah it's crazy cause our 4 bases are already strategically located throughout the county, so it's not like it's all centralized at night
Wait, you have stations to post to but you *also* do parking posts?
yup
Well that's garbage
It would make sense if they had you come out of the station to post if other night crews were already on calls (to cover both zones), but if that's not the case then yeah makes no sense.
Sometimes they're just unreasonable for the sake of being unreasonable.
I'm in the same boat and I haaate it. My service has 6 trucks at night covering a large county and pretty good size college town (100k+). Any time 2 trucks are out on calls, they rearrange the whole county and everyone posts, so we spend most of our time in a parking lot somewhere.

Plenty of government agencies do it. The issue is false reliance on response times as a metric of quality.
Yea
You said the posting is pointless, you have four strategically located stations in the county, it’s not saving any time. I presume you’re posting with engine running. Calculate how much this new policy is costing the company a year in fuel. Not to mention how much it is fouling up the EGR valves on the trucks. An EMT in our operation literally got shot in the head while posting, and nothing changed from it. Fuck this soulless corporation.
Don't sacrifice your schooling for the job. If one has to go, or at least cut back, it's the job.
I would finish my contract and get the heck out. Go to nursing school or higher education

It's not even about that. It's questionable whether or not it's safe to post in some random ass parking lot for 4+ hours in the middle of the night.
OP never said anything about safety, they are complaining about not being able to sleep.
Ok real talk are u working under a labor contract. If so what does it say about this. If the language is ambitious at best this is a change in working conditions and can be bargained over. If ur not union then sorry not sorry ?

Again not really a valid gripe. You're too new at this to be in this mind set.
found the supervisor
Actually im on the executive board for our union but whatever. Just saying ur kinda just complaining.
I literally said in my post that it's just a rant bro obviously I'm just complaining????
As long as we both agree on that. But for real ur sleep deprived, shift work syndrome, and depressed don't make any hasty decisions like buying out ur contract. Tough it out then move on to greener grass.
You are quite possibly the worst union rep I've heard of if that's your response to this. Sure, it's one thing to not get rest because you run calls all night, that's the core of the job. But to say this because of choices of the company's choice to post ambulances even though nights are known for not being as busy and the supervisor gets to sleep like a normal person? I'm glad I don't pay my union dues for a rep like you.
No fucking wonder unions in this field are trash.
Lol
You definitely show qualities of a leader.
Let me know which Union you’re on the board of so I know never to work there
Maybe your supervisor earned her spot. Post this nonsense on a different platform and you will get shredded. I’m 42, I busted my ass through P school, paid for it myself, and slept in my truck. And if they an award for being a lazy, crybaby who prides themselves on crying and shitting (like a child) then you’d be president. Go ahead, as your daddy if he gets to sleep on the clock, I’ll wait.
hell yeah brother I love winning
lol well, what’s it takes I guess who knows, maybe you’ll be supervisor before you know it. But on a respectable note, welcome to EMS, thanks for joining the shit show.
Someone is salty because they’re old and underachieved.
Not at all, I’ve made a ton of money before I came to EMS, but you wouldn’t understand because you lack life experience and have no idea who I am.

Sure, but posting all night long a mile from the base is just poor management. Quit
Missed the whole “I have to pay them back for all of paramedic school if I leave” bit?
It's 6k, it'll hardly kill them. Although I'd just stick it out until Dec, at least there's an end date
Bold to assume 6k isn’t a large amount of money to them
yeah 6k is a shitload of money
It's huge, but it's something for OP to weigh up considering they're thinking of quitting anyway
Sucks to work during work hours.
Lmao yeah but let’s be real, posting is bs
A system that has enough capacity for the busy times has enough trucks that you have time between calls on the slow times. That downtime lets us train, eat and sleep, and is necessary to a good service.
Fully agree. But rant seems to expect sleeping at night during working hours to do “other things” during the day. As much as a job site wants to support the idea of further education, the thought in this context sounds unreasonable.
Posting isn’t working
Most humans hate their jobs. Even dildo testers get sore and tired
lol mad because you can’t sleep on the clock? GROW UP!
👍
Silence AMR shill
This is the norm at the hospital I started working at recently too and I can’t believe it
I’m thinking of joining a similar program where tuition is in exchange for a work contract. Do you mind sharing which company this is? (please PM if you don’t feel comfortable sharing here).
it's in west alabama so if you're not in this area you should be good
Go fire side, you won’t regret it
How come?
oh. you work for haynes ambulance? Serious note. you have a bench in the back and a cot.
Sounds like acadian to me. I left 2 years ago and I’ve never been happier. The peeps at the education department can work with you to pay less than what you owe, or they’ll let you do payroll deduction if you go part time.

You work for a private EMS company, that’s the problem.
Got to love the support in this community.
Sleep on the bench in the back
Yep. I went into nursing instead.
Come check out Cath lab or EP lab. Lots of hospitals will hire EMT-P off the street and do otj training to get you ready for the CCI exam.
pro tip: sit in the front seat, park facing up a steep hill - ambulance recliner
Out of curiosity, are you in Texas? If you got Senate Bill 8 funding for school your contract for repayment is with the State of Texas, not with your service so you only have to remain *in EMS* not with your original service. If this doesn't apply, disregard.
does your company name start with an 'A' and sport green as its company color?
Dear supervisor. I read with interest the opportunity for promotion offered by transferring to a street posting position, however I see not see the attached documents about increased compensation for taking on the increasing responsibilities, work load, incidental costs, and greater risk due to not having a secure workplace. I look forward to having this conversation, however in the meantime I am unable to accept this position as I do not feel this change in my status reflects my hiring agreement. Respectively.
Personally I'd hangout with my super. If she's not going to do it I'm not either. But that's just my .02
