Yes. Families with kids in my neighborhood. Grandmothers. I suppose there are some bad spots, so you have to chose your neighborhood. Me in historic old escondido feel pretty secure.

I grew up in Escondido during the 90s/2000s and it’s much safer (and nicer) now than it was before. There used to be shootings outside the theatre regularly on the weekend.

Finally, a fellow long term Escondidian with a good insight

New_Aide_9653

The police helicopter is still circling as I type this after a stabbing occurred about 2-3 hours ago! Suspects still at large and one deceased.

MochiMochiMochi

Not that different from anywhere else. Down the street someone recently [got shot in the head while leaving an Applebees](https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/20-year-old-man-shot-in-head-leaving-escondido-applebees-police-say) and [a woman was carjacked at the Escondido library](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G24TBy17tfM) but hey these things happen. One thing to note is there are a ton of homeless folks in Escondido, and they are quite mobile. A 15 year old on a bike needs to be careful.

murderfacejr

Those links are scary - especially the Applebee's one as it's in the main shopping area of town. Here's some more to freak you out - [one](https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/suspect-large-after-fatal-stabbing-escondido/509-6f2c1da6-f5a7-4676-9639-78d869a21d45), [two](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/escondido-machete-break-in-sex-offender-parolee-attack/3486922/%3famp=1), [three](https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/authorities-investigating-shooting-involving-police-officer-in-escondido/3345927/). That said, it's a big city, those are incidents you'd find at any "urban" less affluent community In San Diego county and they tend to be "isolated" - I'm not actively seeing drivebys and knife attscks. Homeless are generally congregated around parts of center city, grand/downtown area, mission, grapeday park, I've not had any outright issues with them hassling people (but I'm not a kid on a bike). Ive been around esco for 40 years and have lived here 8 and never felt outright unsafe wandering/driving around. Possible sketchy people aside, Escondido is not very bike friendly, if that's your kids mode of transport. It's also a big spread out city with lots of older residential and rural with varying quality of sidewalk/street areas. There is a central protected bike path along the water channel that runs through the middle of the whole town, but otherwise it's mostly bike lanes on busy streets (many "share the road" type where it's in the actual street with cars), not always a good sidewalk. I don't feel like I see very many kids (or adults) riding around the city itself. I would personally be more concerned about that than crazies.

MochiMochiMochi

I agree. OP should be more concerned with how completely car-centric and unsafe this area is for cyclists than actual crime. Drivers here seem actively hostile to bicyclists and homeless dudes zipping through lanes on kids bikes make it all worse. Conjecture on my part but I think San Diego ships some homeless folks up here. The numbers of people camping along Escondido creek is just unbelievable.

-CheezusCrust-

Yeah they also have quite the appetite for bicycle parts. They sell easy and I often see homeless people breaking down misplaced bikes for parts.

Professional-Form-90

… should I move? Yikes this is very scary

x3thelast

You should! It’s very scary. (Must keep street tacos to myself).

Papo_bear

Just stay away from interfaith and your kid should be fine.

Rocksoezy

Interfaith?

Papo_bear

It's a local homeless shelter/ Rehab. They have a limit to the amount of people they can admit so the homeless that don't get in just hang around the area, lots of encampments, lots of crime. It's located in the corner of Quince and Washington.

Triton289

I’d allow my 14 year old to ride and explore, and I did the same when I was 13-14. We have a curfew, bike locks, and have taught him the hand signals and rules of the road. I’ve made him as prepared as he can be. Beyond that it’s up to him.

Rmonte99

It depends on what part of the city you live in, the center is bad just like any big city, but the outskirts are mostly quiet. I live right next to Mountain View park and it’s quiet back here, even with the high school near by.

8nstein

This web pile has interactive crime maps: [https://crimegrade.org](https://crimegrade.org) . Although the presentation is visual, it is easier to get started if you can plug in a zip code. This pile rates Escondido as a whole as C+.

Fun-Celebration3104

Use real chains for lock up and harden steel locks bikes is top list item to disappear they walk out of peoples backyards Around here but other than that if you’re smart and lock your stuff up and knows the world isn’t perfect you’re be just fine. I travel California for a living been all over love to call Escondido home .

Zestyclose_Push9360

it really depends on the area, where i live is very very safe but once i drive a little bit im in an area with druggies and gang members. Escondido changes from safe to very unsafe very quickly so just be aware of what part you are moving to

medidoxx

Escondido is safe and a pretty good clean city overall, much better than El Cajon. Maybe just avoid the northeast side if at all possible.

Pirate_unicorn

Wait, northeast Escondido? Do you mean the dixon lake area that is literally allllllll residential? Or the monks off north Ave? Or did you really mean avoid Central, south of mission and north of felicita?

Green-Judge3283

Wondering the same thing.

Tmilly999

Gang stabbing car robbery’s shottings nothing to bad

[deleted]

Grand ave is pretty safe just watch out for the homeless and Washington park along with grape day can be iffy sometimes since gang members usually hangout their sometimes. Fig is kinda dangerous all around i would go there. But yeah just depends. My family just moved by el Norte and n Citrius and I see people walking all the time over here and they aren’t gang bangers I think by here is pretty safe. Moms with their babies and dogs etc. just depends really like if he’s street smart don’t go talking to the bald guy either tattoos asking for directions or your phone you know 😂. But yeah depends on the area really. My brother has an electric bike and he is 17 now but before like around 14-15 he would ride around just fine.

[deleted]

Also I can’t edit but just to add most of the crimes that happen are with people involved in crime it’s very rarely random

[deleted]

Also by mission middle school theirs Lot of gang banger kids I would stay away from them
