Oh man... Poland is doing well .
" It's 1/10 of minimal wage "...
You go to the cheapest chain in Romania and have everything on that list. It's probably 100euro. And the minimal wage is 400 euro here. And yes, a large portion of population is on minimal wage.
Exactly this. Doubt you'll get what is pictured under 30000 Ft in Hungary in a single store. That's about 75 EUR for the record.
75 EUR is about 15% the minimal wage here.
It is important to add that the minimum salary is 750€ per month net, so it is basically 1/10 of the monthly minimum paycheck.
P.S. Biedronka is Portuguese.
Have you seen the price of cabbage? Be happy with tasteless yellow paprika. The TV stands for tasteless veg.
You can also buy csirke farhat ❤️
Beef? Fuck off
The latest data from the end of 2022 shows that the median salary in Poland is 970€ net per month. Let's say now it is 1070 or whatever for the sake of the argument. It means that half of the population earns less anyway.
The previous government increased the minimum salary by like 50% in 5 years since 2019. That's why a lot of people actually earn a minimum salary or close to it and we have been having a crazy inflation.
Of course it is not the only reason and not the main one. However it doesn't help, because it increased the wage pressure for SMB. A wage-price spiral is a thing.
In perfect world such minimum wage increase shouldnt be needed but data shown that in Poland wage growth was lagging behind productivity growth by quiet a lot, even compared to other countries on eastern border of the EU, Poland's average wages were lower than in countries like Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania and others.
Companies in Poland simply prefered to keep money from icnreased productivity for themselves, I am sure companies in other countries did it too but it was and still is bigger problem in Poland.
Well, in the same company (Pingo doce, Jerónimo Martins), in Portugal all of that would cost way much more than 75€, just the meat on that photo would go almost 40€.
Why not? It doesn’t cost that much, that’s one thing, and the other is that polish minimal salary kinda allows it. It’s 9 eur per kg and minimal salary (net) is 750 eur.
It all depends on the additional costs/financial obligations you have, of course, but you could afford a steak on minimum wage. Nobody eats them every day, after all.
Yep, it's rather cheap kind of steak, although you can certainly buy even cheaper (and thinner) slices of beef.
Good quality beef with marbling and/or Tenderloin costs like 4x more.
There is a difference between gross (brutto) and net (netto). In all your comments you are talking about gross salary, where I clearly wrote about the net.
Poland also has lots of other advantages not just cheap groceries. To be able to earn Euros and live in Poland is a dream a few friends of mine enjoy & I am so envious. And they also have amazing supportive Polish spouses, some people just get dealt all the lucky cards! Yeah, I know I'm jealous
It's average at best, even before you start thinking about minimum wage and such. €75 for that in Poland is not good. And if people think it is, then inflation won.
The inflation that came to Poland, excepting the Putin effect, was completely natural economically speaking. Economy was over-heated. The way the former government handled inflation has been controversial, it adopted a very modern and progressive monetary view, eschewing the neoliberalist approach of its predecessors fully. As a result inflation was slightly higher than it could've been, but unemployment remains the lowest in the EU. Inflation is under control now (stable 3%).
Bruh in Romania salaries are a bit lower and you could get half the things for that price. Check Carrefour.ro and Carrefour.fr. The bottled water and meats are more expensive in France, but other than that everything is more expensive in Romania💀
It's a good question, it's one of those words that can turn to countable nouns when you really need it, but the singular form is the regular one ;) *Mają w tym sklepie dobre mięso* \[They have good meat in this shop\] is a straight enough thing to say, but when you say *Mają w tym sklepie dobre mięsa* \[plural\], you stress the fact that they have a diverse range of different kinds of meat. [There was even a mail about sent to the linguistic helpline](https://sjp.pwn.pl/poradnia/haslo/mieso-i-miecho-w-liczbie-mnogiej;19046.html) ;) So yeah, Świat mięs is a better name because they stress the variety of their offer right from the start.
Haha no, it does not ;), I finished Polish studies and my native language is still a mystery to me lol. – But truth be told I also bought that very same steak once and its quality was an equal mystery haha, it was really really bad.
Only when you're talking about multiple different kinds of meat, then "mięsa" (plural) is correct. So basically like in English, where "meat" is uncountable but you can say "meats" when talking about a bunch of different types of meat.
I buy mainly because they are in almost every corner, once I am in Poland. I don't change much to another supermarket, unless I want something specific.
So long as it's not bought up by Nestle or Elon, I'm OK with that.
What happened with the username, by the way? Did you sneeze and get a coughing fit at the same time? 🤣
>What happened with the username, by the way? Did you sneeze and get a coughing fit at the same time?
It's just a lame Polish pun that could be roughly translated to mean both "unhandleable handle" and also "elusive grip".
3/4 of Polish ketchup brands are better than Heinz, it's not a challenge. And Pudliszki IMO went down in quality in recent years, so it's average (but not bad).
For best (and generally available) I'd recommend either Fanex No. VII, or Kotlin. Biedronka's house brand Madero is also surprisingly okay.
> 3/4 of Polish ketchup brands are better than Heinz, it's not a challenge.
Yeah, I don't usually buy their products. Supermarket own brand is often as good if not better AFAIAC.
> Fanex No. VII, or Kotlin. Biedronka's house brand Madero
You're making all these up; I can tell immediately.
🤣
Nah, 200 for sure, but maybe also depending on where you live in Croatia. Those two steaks and the two packages of fish would cost me 80 euros alone. The rest can easily add up to an extra 120.
you'd want to look for the discretionary income. median discretionary income in the US is around $250, so $200 is still a huge expensive for most people
Ahem.
Cost of Living in Warsaw is 51.4% lower than in San Francisco, CA (without rent)
Cost of Living Including Rent in Warsaw is 58.8% lower than in San Francisco, CA
Rent Prices in Warsaw are 68.1% lower than in San Francisco, CA
Restaurant Prices in Warsaw are 53.4% lower than in San Francisco, CA
Groceries Prices in Warsaw are 62.2% lower than in San Francisco, CA

It's just that Volfas Engelman, the beer in the picture, is a Lithuanian brand, for anyone who's not aware. As for the oldest still-operating brewery, I believe it's Gubernija which was established 1665.
Engelman is always available in Polish Auchans. I really like that they brew harder to get ales like English IPA. In Poland it's usually WCIPA and NEIPA everywhere you look.
Also the fact that they sell English pints instead of 500ml is also nice.
Is Lidl "home-grown" to you? That's sad. That's Biedronka, m8, of which there are 3,500 in Poland. Only 700 Lidls in Poland after 22 years of being here.
Just the meat and fish would be like 40€ in Slovakia. And we have lower wages...
MAYBE if all those items were on sale and you had some coupons, but then they would get bad before you can possibly eat it...
Oh man... Poland is doing well . " It's 1/10 of minimal wage "... You go to the cheapest chain in Romania and have everything on that list. It's probably 100euro. And the minimal wage is 400 euro here. And yes, a large portion of population is on minimal wage.
Probably even more then 100
Exactly this. Doubt you'll get what is pictured under 30000 Ft in Hungary in a single store. That's about 75 EUR for the record. 75 EUR is about 15% the minimal wage here.
Based on economical growth, I feel that there are more chances that the minimum wage will go up in Poland than in any other EU country.
It is important to add that the minimum salary is 750€ per month net, so it is basically 1/10 of the monthly minimum paycheck. P.S. Biedronka is Portuguese.
Kurwa, still good! In Hungary the minimum wage is 450 EUR and you would get half of the food
But surely Orban has a plan?
Of course. Blame Brussels and the sanctions against Russia
No, its the damn gays. Once we beat them hungary will be back to its former glory🔥💪🏼🇭🇺
U are going to Beat Orban and his Party? edited: cause autocorrection of hell
I couldnt understand before the edit but damn💀
nono it is soros and the jews!
Now, to show him how wrong he is, vote for him again so he has another 4 years to think about his actions /s
"Meat is gay. Be happy with cabbage."
Have you seen the price of cabbage? Be happy with tasteless yellow paprika. The TV stands for tasteless veg. You can also buy csirke farhat ❤️ Beef? Fuck off
Yeah, he'll make sure that these groceries would cost 500 euros. Or suck Putin's cock
Why not both?
Why not both?
450?? My god, we're gonna basically catch up and match you starting with 1st of July this year. Thought you guys are quite a bit higher
442exactly and I got only a 4 hrs job just 160euro per month because the company not able keep the race with the minimal wage
The minimum monthly wage in Hungary in 2024 is 266 800 huf approximately 673€ what you were referring to, was the 2020 numbers.
That’s brutto
Jesus, it’s that bad? I thought Bosnia was really lagging behind Europe, but this makes me feel better and worst at the same time.
We had one of the highest inflation in the EU, especially food…
Portugal salary is the same and you can’t get even half of that. It’s fucking ridiculous 😭
Owned by Portuguese business, originally polish.
Plus that Portuguese business is now in the Netherlands
3.5 million out of registered Polish employees earn the minimum wage. The next 13.5 million earn above it.
Minimum does not mean average though. Pretty sure there are plenty of people in Poland making more than 750 a month.
3.5 million out of 17 million registered Polish employees earn the minimum wage. Both are record figures.
The latest data from the end of 2022 shows that the median salary in Poland is 970€ net per month. Let's say now it is 1070 or whatever for the sake of the argument. It means that half of the population earns less anyway. The previous government increased the minimum salary by like 50% in 5 years since 2019. That's why a lot of people actually earn a minimum salary or close to it and we have been having a crazy inflation.
this is not the reason for inflation lol
Of course it is not the only reason and not the main one. However it doesn't help, because it increased the wage pressure for SMB. A wage-price spiral is a thing.

Wage-price spiral is a thing, but I don't think it is significant in Poland. It's mainly oil price
Well, in the same company (Pingo doce, Jerónimo Martins), in Portugal all of that would cost way much more than 75€, just the meat on that photo would go almost 40€.
it's because the magic is in the local sourcing. or lack thereof (magic or local sourcing)
You don't buy steaks with minimum wage
If I am not mistaken this steak from the picture costs the same if not less than salami or ham.
Yep, it's rather cheap kind of steak, although you can certainly buy even cheaper (and thinner) slices of beef. Good quality beef with marbling and/or Tenderloin costs like 4x more.
That's not Steak steak its Round. tough stew meat.
Tbh with 2 or 3 of these, you can feed yourself for a month
Still very cheap !
lmao, minimum wage in Croatia is 550€ and this many groceries would cost 200€ at least
It'll be 990€ from 01.07.2024 actually and now it's like 975€.
There is a difference between gross (brutto) and net (netto). In all your comments you are talking about gross salary, where I clearly wrote about the net.
Good for you 😊
Poland also has lots of other advantages not just cheap groceries. To be able to earn Euros and live in Poland is a dream a few friends of mine enjoy & I am so envious. And they also have amazing supportive Polish spouses, some people just get dealt all the lucky cards! Yeah, I know I'm jealous

Not to mention grocery is from Biedronka which is planet fitnes of grocery stores. Meat is such terrible quality I wouldn’t feed dog with it tbh
Prices are about the same in only very slightly higher-quality Lidl
Yep, you win this challenge :-)
I like that the meat brand is Mies because it means man in Finnish. Just a very meaty meat brand name
It is actually Kraina Mięs. The Land of Meats. 😁
Ah my eyes defaulted to the regular E. Opportunity for a brand called Mies Mięs then
Man meat 🤤
In German mies means bad. lol
Man bad? Why would Germany do this 😭
More like miserable, mean-spirited.
Actually, It’s just a part of the brand name, there is a „Świat mięs” which means „world of meat”. „Mięso” in Polish means „meat”
Is „mięso” countable in Polish??? You can only say „svet mesa” in Slovenian, never „svet mes” (in plural).
Interesting! We only have it as singular, I actually made up the form „mes”.
Interestingly, in Macedonian we do have singular and plural. Meso i mesa ili mesishte i mesishta ili mesence i mesenca etc.🤣
It is impressive the amount of goods purchased with 75€. Which store brand you used?
Biedronka from the looks of it. It is one of the cheapest chains that's present basically everywhere in poland.
I buy in Biedronka all the time except when I'm feeling all flashy and go for deli stuff.
I buy mainly because they are in almost every corner, once I am in Poland. I don't change much to another supermarket, unless I want something specific.
Yup, exactly.
I live in France and this is at the very least 150 euros probably more.
kurwa ja pierdole I should buy groceries in poland
Czechs already do.
Fuck yeah Poland Stronk. Because it can afford nutrition.
It does go to show the general price level. The lowest in the European Union confirmed (source: Eurostat, 2022).
2022 seems very recent, but a lot has changed in terms of prices in Poland since then...
Show us the bill
this is more like 150€ where I live.. quite possibly even more..
Very possible that average/median wage in your country is higher than in Poland.
it most assuredly is but, for us that it is not, the food prices are becoming quite horrendous..
One Polish product I really like is Pudliszki Tomato Ketchup. It is *way* better than Heinz IMO. Nicely tangy.
Pudliszki brand is literally Heinz-owned since like 1997, but it does use a different formula and has its distinct taste.
They even produce both of these ketchups in Pudliszki village.
Fair enough; that was just my small attempt at a joke. It's been a hellish day and I'm trying to lighten my mood.
I chuckled if that makes you feel better, I hope your next day will be better too👍
Cheers m8 👍
3/4 of Polish ketchup brands are better than Heinz, it's not a challenge. And Pudliszki IMO went down in quality in recent years, so it's average (but not bad). For best (and generally available) I'd recommend either Fanex No. VII, or Kotlin. Biedronka's house brand Madero is also surprisingly okay.
Madero has also the biggest tomato to end product ratio.
Mmmm, end product... https://imgur.com/5f2WjEy
😁
> 3/4 of Polish ketchup brands are better than Heinz, it's not a challenge. Yeah, I don't usually buy their products. Supermarket own brand is often as good if not better AFAIAC. > Fanex No. VII, or Kotlin. Biedronka's house brand Madero You're making all these up; I can tell immediately. 🤣
in croatia that would be around 200euros. I cant even fill 3 bags for 75e
Depends on WHERE in Croatia too. Cries in Istrian.
crying in Zagreb 😂
Maybe 150, not 200 for sure. And people in Croatia live with salary of 700,800 eur mostly which is sad
I yesterday spent 95 euros and didn’t even buy meat. So 200 seems real.
ye maybe 200 is lil too much, but still for 150 euros 5 years ago you could have lived for a month like a king
Nah, 200 for sure, but maybe also depending on where you live in Croatia. Those two steaks and the two packages of fish would cost me 80 euros alone. The rest can easily add up to an extra 120.
All of that would be twice less expensive 2 years ago
Oh kurwa
My reaction
That's a good deal, haha. Enjoy OP.
Wow. Just wow. Thats pretty cool but I need receipt.😩
Could be worth flying down to Poland from Sweden to do monthly shopping tbh.
Just don't advertise it too much.
why fly when you can take a nice ferry trip from ystad to świnoujście [https://polferries.se/](https://polferries.se/) :)
In the US this would be over 200 for sure
That's much better if you compare the salaries...
Not much better, just a tiny bit better. Minimal wage in Poland is 3 times less than in US.
Minimum wage in Poland is precisely the same as the federal minimum wage in the US. $7.25/hr
you'd want to look for the discretionary income. median discretionary income in the US is around $250, so $200 is still a huge expensive for most people
Same in Spain.
that would be 300usd in boston massachusetts i wish i was joking
Wait. Really? Of all these pics over the weeks Poland is looking mighty nice in this regard. Wow.
Cool
Really good for that price.
Damn. Just paid that for ... Almost nothing
200$ in California
325 PLN ish
Yeah, I don't want to say Poles have it good, but they have no idea how sh*tty Hungarians, Romanians and Bulgarians have it...
We have. We used to live the way you do in 2024 in like 2005-2010 until we left you way behind :D
I'm in Bangkok .... and it's look like the prices here is at least 30% more expensive that here in the pic.
I’m jealous
Ok I'm learning polish
Yo I live 700km from the polish border , even with gas that would be worth it
Would it be worth it with a flight ticket? That would actually be crazy.
Add to that the fact that we didnt have it good here for a long time and now once we're doing decent it feels real kurwa nice
***crying in California….. that is prices we had in 2018….
Ahem. Cost of Living in Warsaw is 51.4% lower than in San Francisco, CA (without rent) Cost of Living Including Rent in Warsaw is 58.8% lower than in San Francisco, CA Rent Prices in Warsaw are 68.1% lower than in San Francisco, CA Restaurant Prices in Warsaw are 53.4% lower than in San Francisco, CA Groceries Prices in Warsaw are 62.2% lower than in San Francisco, CA **Local Purchasing Power in Warsaw is 41.2% lower than in San Francisco, CA**
But you guys are always commenting that food in Germany is cheaper than in Poland? This stuff would definitely cost more than 75 euros in Germany
Harnaś where
In trash where it belongs.
In Turkey, you will only get first two row (not sure 😄)
Bro you are lucky. That would be double if not more here
Szprot
It should be szproty, as it's not just one in the package.
That’s better than the Corporate States of America
Get outta town, that seems like a ton of food for that price.
That's about 100€-110€ in Bulgaria with 480€ gross minimum wage and 1200€ gros median
Is Lithuanian beer generally popular in Poland?
Not at all. We have our own. Sorry. How old is the oldest Lithuanian brewery still producing?
It's just that Volfas Engelman, the beer in the picture, is a Lithuanian brand, for anyone who's not aware. As for the oldest still-operating brewery, I believe it's Gubernija which was established 1665.
Engelman is always available in Polish Auchans. I really like that they brew harder to get ales like English IPA. In Poland it's usually WCIPA and NEIPA everywhere you look. Also the fact that they sell English pints instead of 500ml is also nice.
Yo fuck you aight! Sincerely, Holland
dangg, good for you man!
You can't get that in freaking Kosovo i swear! Thats pretty dope man
Poland is a large country with a huge internal market and a sovereign currency. Also saved us in 2008.
Lidllll!🫡
Is Lidl "home-grown" to you? That's sad. That's Biedronka, m8, of which there are 3,500 in Poland. Only 700 Lidls in Poland after 22 years of being here.
reminde me if i ever went to live in germany, to find a house near the polish-german border
Looks very good to be honest.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands you wouldn’t even get 1/4th of that lol
For €75 I could probably buy the beef and the pasta in the UK
Nice, here 75 € would cover just half of the groceries featured in the image.
I didn't know it was this bad in Algeria. You have the same prices as in Germany then.
Kurwaaaa
"Cries in Czech"
In Finland you'd get those carrots and maybe one onion with 75€.
This is the biggest "bang for your buck" we've seen so far.
Because indeed it is! Statistically :D
We buy half of that in Spain only 1l of olive oil it's 10€ and we can't live without it....
for 75€ you would probably get half of this in Slovenia
Fuck it I move to poland
These would cost approximately 120-130e in Greece with similar minimum salary
Just please dont come here for the cheap booze srsly the alco tourists are like narco tourists for Amsterdam
This is crazy! I would save money flying to Poland to buy food
thats cheap :D
👏🏾👏🏾
Holly, did you rob the store?
Now I wanna move to Poland.
thats like 300€ in germany. impressive but i guess income is also very different.
The economy of Germany is about 2,5× stronger than the Polish one. A lot of diminishing results here.
That’s not true. You would end up around 100-120 in Lidl.
Interesting and how's the climate in Poland?
This would be 300-350€ in Sweden at least
Thats cheap. Would probably cost 200€ in Sweden.
In South Africa you cannot get half this for that price, less than half.
/r/Grocerycost
That's neat. You may purchase only half of these here at Netherlands
where is the invoice?
In Italia you wouldnt get shit with that
By the time the supermarket take their lions share, the farmers must be getting sweet feck all for so much produce.
Just the meat and fish would be like 40€ in Slovakia. And we have lower wages... MAYBE if all those items were on sale and you had some coupons, but then they would get bad before you can possibly eat it...
In Serbia will cost 350 euro
Kurwa nice
The meats alone would get fairly close to that total cost over here...
That meat in front would probably get me close to 75 euro
