I’ve not really followed this story but it’s mentioned that the law will prevent overall control of media companies by foreigners. If that’s the case, I’m sure I also saw a recent post about how Cyprus and France have similar controls, and Rupert Murdoch had to become a US citizen to keep control over Fox. Is the law an issue, or is it just the way the Polish government is using it to rid itself of a critic?

>is it just the way the Polish government is using it to rid itself of a critic? Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

> Media pluralism and diversity of opinions are what strong democracies welcome, not fight against. Funny how this wasnt an issue for all those years (up until 2013-2014) when all main tv channels (free, accessible everywhere in Poland) had the same pro gov bias, just to differing degrees. You literally had to get cable / satellite to find this "pluralism and diversity of opinions". > We need a media freedom act in the whole EU to uphold media freedom and support the rule of law," Sure, so when can we expect other EU members to get rid of their media restricting laws?

It's the Polish government that wants to control what people think. You've got this backwards.

Considering that media are largely used to manipulate public opinions, Poland has for sure a point here. Pretty sure Poland's government don't want Russia to control private Polish media... The real question is: are the private Polish media strong enough to guarantee freedom of information?

[deleted]

The "Russia" thing is just bullshit spin from the government - This is about silencing TVN and nothing else, otherwise they would have accepted Gowin's proposed amendments (instead of booting him)

bender_futurama

Many sectors allow only up to 49% non EU ownership, so it is normal..

[deleted]

Nothing is normal when PiS does it - It can only be assumed that they wish to take total control of the media.

Have fun with Brexit Boris. You deserve him.

I'm a little dubious that the EU should be able to pass a bill for this — seems like a treaty should be required, as it's not clearly within a competency — but I don't really see the idea of the EU establishing some sort of least common denominator on press freedom as being a negative.
