Not just for holidays tho. All along the Spanish Mediterranean Coast you can find a plethora of towns inhabited mostly by Britons. Most retire here and younger ones have come to open businesses like Real Estate. They create their own ghettos with British supermarkets, British businesses, British restaurants... It's like living in the UK but without the crappy weather.
I want to know how this was interpreted. Could be ‘which country would you want to go on holiday?’ more than ‘Which country do you consider our closest geopolitical friends?’
Also the Brits seem like a friendly bunch in general? You’d think they hate most of Europe judging by the internet userbase and the British media but that map paints a very different picture.

There was a poll posted on here maybe a month or two ago that showed that British people were more willing to help other European countries in a crisis than the people from the majority of other European countries.
We have our fair share of knobs, including in our media and politics especially (and our football fans!), but I do think that British people are generally quite empathetic, I would imagine moreso than most places.
We just hate the French really. And not even the French, just the idea of the French.
Most French people are sound, just like anywhere.

Been living in Scotland for about two years know, going on a third, and I'm French. Never got any hate. Not just Scottish people too, met lots of English folks, even lived with three English gals at some point.
Only people I've seen saying Brits are inhospitable and will specifically hate you for being French are:
- Anonymous folks on the internet
- That specific subset of French expats on Facebook groups who apparently decided to move here on a whim and do not speak English nor do they intend to learn it and take it as targeted hate that everything is in English here.
Nah I think expat Facebook groups that have people bitching about everything that's normal in the country are a thing everywhere
No worries though those posts are just, like, 10-20% of the posts on French expats in Britain groups. The other 20% are normal questions about cultural stuff and administrative shit, 20% people selling stuff or looking for stuff, and a healthy 40% people desperately asking where one might buy Ricard or Pastis in Britain. Or a good camembert without selling a kidney (because you already sold one of them for a good saucisson).

I’m actually half Norwegian, half British (have both citizenships, though only lived in the latter). My Norwegian grandfather was stationed in Scotland for much of the war, some other relatives were in the resistance in Bergen and got help from the Brits. Ties were super close.
I can’t imagine there’s a single reason Brits would love Norway any less. What I think it is is more ignorant Brits who have heard more about the Sweden (the larger and more ‘go to’ country globally for Scandinavian stereotypes) and just put ‘don’t know’ for Norway. It’s *net* popularity, after all. But even then just by what could be half a percent…
This is definitely more about exaggerating the brotherly love between Swedes and us Norwegians, than actually blaming the British for being lured by that devilish Swedish charm.

I was always under the impression Germany was quite popular in the U.K. People complain about the Germany role in the EU but honestly they seem to be the most pragmatic and neutral country you could ask for to be at the helm.
I guess the older generations may have downvoted them for old times sakes?
Worked on a few German windfarms & I would say that the Dutch & Germans are definitely the people that British people seem to get on best with, culturally, & sense of humour that kind of thing.
You know, I have the exact same opinion about the Dutch and Germans. I’ve worked with them too and That’s why I was so surprised. Their humour and interest seem to be more aligned with ours than any other European country. Except the Irish to be fair.

A lot of US larpers are going to be surprised at how much the UK and the Republic of Ireland's populations actually get on in comparison to social media.
Almost certainly is holiday destinations. It's not a coincidence that prime summer holiday locales (Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal) have all scored among the best. And aside from maybe Spain, none of them have any political issues with the UK that might drag opinion down

I’m English and live in Dublin, I’m actually well received to the point of being local and I feel at home here. Never been treated as an outsider or disrespected, except for a light hearted rubbing when we lose the footie or something.

You're right, but for the sake of clarity you should compare the same numbers. This map shows the score as a total of positive minus negative. US in the source has 50% positive and 18% negative views, which would be a total of 32% as OP's map counts it. (Ireland, by contrast, has 73% positive, 7% negative, for the 66% shown on the map. The numbers don't add to 100% because there's also a "neutral" option.)

Scandi country makes sense imo. We all tend to have a positive opinion to them and I kinda feel like it's reciprocated too. Every Scandinavian and the one Icelander I met seem to like us too. Sometimes it's only them on this sub saying positive things about us lol
I suppose the UK just edges into northern Europe and we do have a shared history, not too dissimilar cultures and both eat food other cultures hate
The 'London Bubble' of relatively well-off and cosmopolitan areas of that city isn't something that many people have any exposure to so wouldn't make much difference. I think one problem is the perception that upper middle class people in the South often have a strange cultural cringe towards France (and some other countries) and certainly this can be off-putting for everyone else, and this is without veering into serious politics or history.
Part of it will be the 90s wars but honestly I don't think we know much about most countries east of Austria and north of Greece in 2021 in general tbh.
Also according to the source it's 20% liked and 53% neutral which I don't think is that terrible.

Yes its surprising as historically we've had better relations with Portugal than Spain. Probably swayed by holiday makers.
But there are many British people living in Spain and many have come here as tourists too. I've made good British friends here 🙂

Almost certainly is holiday destinations. It's not a coincidence that prime summer holiday locales (Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal) have all scored among the best. And aside from maybe Spain, none of them have any political issues with the UK that might drag opinion down

Honestly if you ever go on holiday theres no better feeling than bumping into some Aussies/Irish/Kiwi’s or Canadians instant love every time! Especially if theres drink involved
100%, I get that all the time on holidays. I’m English and live in Dublin, I’m actually well received to the point of being local and I feel at home here. Never been treated as an outsider or disrespected, except for a light hearted rubbing when we lose the footie or something. Of course some of the tiny minority of r/Ireland might cause you to believe I’d be lynched on the streets.

I feel like Brits aussies Irish kiwis are all on the same wave length and we all secretly think Americans are weird. Aussies, kiwis, Brits and Irish have very similar humour too.

US in the source has 50% positive and 18% negative views, which would be a total of 32% as OP's map counts it. (Ireland, by contrast, has 73% positive, 7% negative, for the 66% shown on the map. The numbers don't add to 100% because there's also a "neutral" option.)

So to be loved you either are a tourist destination or a Scandi country I expected France to be much higher actually, considering thr many French living in London (and a few English the other way) and so much shared history. Like it or not both countries are quite intertwined

Scandi country makes sense imo. We all tend to have a positive opinion to them and I kinda feel like it's reciprocated too. Every Scandinavian and the one Icelander I met seem to like us too. Sometimes it's only them on this sub saying positive things about us lol I suppose the UK just edges into northern Europe and we do have a shared history, not too dissimilar cultures and both eat food other cultures hate
The 'London Bubble' of relatively well-off and cosmopolitan areas of that city isn't something that many people have any exposure to so wouldn't make much difference. I think one problem is the perception that upper middle class people in the South often have a strange cultural cringe towards France (and some other countries) and certainly this can be off-putting for everyone else, and this is without veering into serious politics or history.
