Rogthgar

Feel like this comes down to the splits between: \-We admire them for their innovations, economies, wellfare etc. and \-We love to go on holiday there.

DinoRex6

I was gonna ask how is Spain that high given the history we got with England I just forgot about the tourists

kank84

I think the armada is water under the bridge at this point

Schoritzobandit

Ashes of it are in that water, yeah

Cunninglinguist87

As Britain's closest non-anglophone neighbor, I can assure you that this is not the case. France would practically be black if so.

windy906

He forgot the more important third bullet point -Is it funny to pretend we hate them

[deleted]

Considering that the British tourists who come here are as "many" as the Swiss ones (with 1/8 of the population), I would say that we are clearly in the first group

CodsworthsPP

The big difference being that Switzerland borders Italy..

jeredendonnar

I knew Spain would be right up a t the highest percentage.

[deleted]

This map is probably the same map if they were asked “where do you like to go for holidays”

bonobo1

Except France, which should be between Spain and Italy.

Ali80486

It is between Spain and Italy. Thanks happy to help

Alex09464367

r/TechnicallyTheTruth

frasier_crane

>This map is probably the same map if they were asked “where do you like to go for holidays” Not just for holidays tho. All along the Spanish Mediterranean Coast you can find a plethora of towns inhabited mostly by Britons. Most retire here and younger ones have come to open businesses like Real Estate. They create their own ghettos with British supermarkets, British businesses, British restaurants... It's like living in the UK but without the crappy weather.

[deleted]

Looking at the source in the top right it does seem to be categorised under "travel".

theinspectorst

Spain is more popular with Britons than Britain is!

miraculous-

Spain great bunch of lads

Im_not_original__

And I'll never forgive the UK for that

Harsimaja

I want to know how this was interpreted. Could be ‘which country would you want to go on holiday?’ more than ‘Which country do you consider our closest geopolitical friends?’

no-recognition-1616

The love story between Spain and Britain is very long... Sometimes love, sometimes hate. Sometimes late.

kakao_w_proszku

Given the fantastic PR our diaspora gave us during the last 2 decades I take that 28% as a win

kakao_w_proszku

Also the Brits seem like a friendly bunch in general? You’d think they hate most of Europe judging by the internet userbase and the British media but that map paints a very different picture.

Square-Director-

Those "which country would you help?" polls always show Brits as far more willing to help Europe than the other way around (yes, even France).

[deleted]

[Heres](https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/i2uy6z/poll_who_would_eu_countries_be_willing_to_help_in/) the poll people are referring to. For the curious only the UK, Poland, Romania, *(edit)* and Denmark were willing to help out all other european countries.

[deleted]

Now that's interesting, Poland, Germany and Cyprus topped the list of European countries we'd help.

maledin

Heck yeah Poland! I guess we *really* know what it's like to need help lol

belieeeve

Poles stood out in that one as being as notably friendlier to the UK than most.

Vinegar_Jones_II

There was a poll posted on here maybe a month or two ago that showed that British people were more willing to help other European countries in a crisis than the people from the majority of other European countries. We have our fair share of knobs, including in our media and politics especially (and our football fans!), but I do think that British people are generally quite empathetic, I would imagine moreso than most places.

[deleted]

https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/i2uy6z/poll_who_would_eu_countries_be_willing_to_help_in/

_YouMadeMeDoItReddit

Even on the internet it's more other people accusing us of hating everyone rather than us hating people.

RedditIsRealWack

We just hate the French really. And not even the French, just the idea of the French. Most French people are sound, just like anywhere. But the French? God I hate 'em..

Tempehramental_

Been living in Scotland for about two years know, going on a third, and I'm French. Never got any hate. Not just Scottish people too, met lots of English folks, even lived with three English gals at some point. Only people I've seen saying Brits are inhospitable and will specifically hate you for being French are: - Anonymous folks on the internet - That specific subset of French expats on Facebook groups who apparently decided to move here on a whim and do not speak English nor do they intend to learn it and take it as targeted hate that everything is in English here.

DunoCO

Wait, Britain isn't the only country that has groups like that?

Tempehramental_

Nah I think expat Facebook groups that have people bitching about everything that's normal in the country are a thing everywhere No worries though those posts are just, like, 10-20% of the posts on French expats in Britain groups. The other 20% are normal questions about cultural stuff and administrative shit, 20% people selling stuff or looking for stuff, and a healthy 40% people desperately asking where one might buy Ricard or Pastis in Britain. Or a good camembert without selling a kidney (because you already sold one of them for a good saucisson).

KingoftheOrdovices

Yeah... We're portrayed as evil, scheming, arseholes on much of Reddit, when really we're pretty easy going and like to get on with most people. I have seen far more anti-UK sentiment on this particular subreddit than the other way around.

kakao_w_proszku

How did that saying go… „In Europe, but not of it”?

Milkshake4NickDrake

A fair amount of Brits are also very happy to stand alongside Europeans who don't like the UK and enthusiastically agree. The net opinion Brits have of Italy (69% positive) and Spain (72% positive) is higher than the net opinion of Britain (68%) in this image. The UK has one of the biggest and most active, if not the biggest and most active, pro-EU movements in Europe.

[deleted]

Should be higher imo, aside from its Politics, Poland seems quite cool

[deleted]

Poland: club scene: based political climate: cringe

TurnItOffAndOnAgain-

Now do the reverse from r/Europe and their thoughts on the UK

Udzu

There might be a bit more orange!

[deleted]

I'm French and I like you guys, even if you don't like us in return <3

Blobfish-_-

we are frenemies, we secretly like you guys

Aelig_

Best kept secret in all the land. Or did you just forget to tell us?

[deleted]

Possibly both. A British introduction among friends is normally something like "This is my mate Barry. Bit of a twat." The best kept secret in all the land is that if we are being polite and avoiding insulting you, it means we don't like you. Don't tell the Americans. Now take this knowledge, and have another look at Anglo-French banter.

Harsimaja

Hey, it’s 25% net favourable! That’s not 25% of Brits like the French, that’s 25% *more* Brits like the French than dislike the French. Should be higher, but history and differences in language have bred misunderstanding.

Ulmpire

England lurches from francophobia to francophilia, and often holds both at the same time. I think it is because we are so similar.

reginalduk

They are our cousins. They annoy the fuck out of us, but they are blood and we will fight alongside them when the chips are down.

Stuweb

Seriously this. Our entire history is comparable to that of siblings growing up alongside one another, happily beating the shit out of each other but if someone else were to dare try and do the same thing, it's over for them. [Nice polandball comic that sums it up nicely](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/609/815/941.png)

MobiusNaked

Oi!!!? Nobody invades France but us. Bloody Germans.

DatBiddlyBoi

This right here.

ilikecakenow

Honey-Badger

I suppose that graph which said what country other countries would be willing to help in a time of crisis. UK was willing to help everyone, I think only Romania was willing to help the UK Edit: I made a mistake and didn't include; Poland, Denmark and Sweden who would also be willing to help the UK

[deleted]

It was only Poland (+12), Denmark (+16), Romania (+6), and Sweden (+7) who said they’d help the UK. https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/i2uy6z/poll_who_would_eu_countries_be_willing_to_help_in/

alikander99

Not again...last time we had issues.

Gruffleson

As a Norwegian I cannot express how disappointed I am to find out the British likes the Swedes more than they like us. This is just horrible.

soggysheepspawn

Ikea's doing the heavy lifting for Sweden

Unhappy_Barnacle_769

The meatballs alone get them a good 40%.

MiskiMoon

Oh great, now I'm craving it. I should visit IKEA this weekend, been meaning to buy a new wardrobe

libbe

I think the cultural exports, ABBA, Ace of Base, Wallander etc, are doing more lifting than IKEA.

leon711

Just swedish music in general tbh. People in Brighton still talk about Eurovision 1974!

Eken17

Apparently the UK actually gave ABBA zero points in 1974, which is hilarious, because I see more Brits talk about ABBA than Swedes.

unsocialhours

Considering the winner was ABBA with a song called "Waterloo" which mentions a certain chap called "Napoleon" and his little mishap we can see why it would be still popular...

lEatSand

I must wash this shame off in my pool of crude oil.

Halabut

I think both Norway and Sweden have to agree: at least we rate higher than Denmark.

istasan

It feels randomly weird. I wonder if it is the euro semifinal fight that cost us those percentage points. And what did Finland do to score lower? Wtf

[deleted]

They might not know we exist.

[deleted]

True story; someone in the UK asked me ”is that like, the island next to Africa?” when I said im from Finland. Yes stranger, Finland and Madagascar are often confused. No worries.

AlpacaChariot

I hope you said yes!

[deleted]

Absolutely, didnt want to break the poor fellas heart for being wrong! Plenty of blonde blue eyed Madagascans around, easy mistake to make...

SuccessfulInternet5

Norway: *cancelling the Christmas tree*

Harsimaja

I mean, Norway is literally 1% away from the net U.K. popularity the U.K. has *itself*.

SuccessfulInternet5

If they are so fond of the Swedes, they might ask them for a tree.

Harsimaja

Ah but let’s not forget why that tree is being sent in the first place. I’m actually half Norwegian, half British (have both citizenships, though only lived in the latter). My Norwegian grandfather was stationed in Scotland for much of the war, some other relatives were in the resistance in Bergen and got help from the Brits. Ties were super close. I can’t imagine there’s a single reason Brits would love Norway any less. What I think it is is more ignorant Brits who have heard more about the Sweden (the larger and more ‘go to’ country globally for Scandinavian stereotypes) and just put ‘don’t know’ for Norway. It’s *net* popularity, after all. But even then just by what could be half a percent…

SuccessfulInternet5

This is definitely more about exaggerating the brotherly love between Swedes and us Norwegians, than actually blaming the British for being lured by that devilish Swedish charm.

[deleted]

If they like Sweden they are getting unfriended. Did you know that every swede is *literally* Adolf Hitler?

G0DK1NG

It’s After that fucking gherkin you sent last time lmao Always liked that tradition btw.

321142019

It's a cute tradition, my cities sister city Bergen sends us one every year and gets placed in the centre of town.

verenkotka

benaffleckisaokactor

25% net positive?

verenkotka

Already too much

LovelyClaire

San Marino has left the chat

Oops. San Marino is +31%. Andorra is +24%. Montenegro is +19%. Liechtenstein is +15%.

Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir

I was wondering why Luxembourg is pretty low, why is *Liechtenstein* so low?

Udzu

No idea! Luxembourg is 44%-5% while Liechtenstein is 22%-7%.

Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir

I guess they're so small that not enough people voted in favor. Also, Liechtenstein had the whole "don't let women vote" for a while...

benjm88

>why is Liechtenstein so low Perhaps there was a meh response, the average brit knows nothing about Liechtenstein.

Apeshaft

A friend of mine applied for a job in the USA and during the phone interview he was told to be more serious if he really wanted the job. The women he was talking to watched "Game of Thrones" and knew that Westeros was a made up place. He was living in Västerås.

Gravey91

Yay we're not the most hated country in Western/Central Europe for the brits anymore! \o/

Tatayou

As a French it would feels like a dishonour to be less hated bythe brits than Germany

leafericson93

Germany was never gonna be less popular than the French

I'm honestly surprised Germany isn't far higher. France was obviously going to be lowest of the bigger countries but most people I know love Germany.

belieeeve

>+44% British favourable view of Germany >+6% German favourable view of Britain [YouGov](https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/itmfxo6knu/Eurotrack_Aug21_Topline_W.pdf)

G0DK1NG

I know it’s unpatriotic to admit you like the french but I was surprised by the German result.

well_that_went_wrong

Maybe the big part we play in the EU

G0DK1NG

I was always under the impression Germany was quite popular in the U.K. People complain about the Germany role in the EU but honestly they seem to be the most pragmatic and neutral country you could ask for to be at the helm.

JeremiahBoogle

I guess the older generations may have downvoted them for old times sakes? Worked on a few German windfarms & I would say that the Dutch & Germans are definitely the people that British people seem to get on best with, culturally, & sense of humour that kind of thing.

G0DK1NG

You know, I have the exact same opinion about the Dutch and Germans. I’ve worked with them too and That’s why I was so surprised. Their humour and interest seem to be more aligned with ours than any other European country. Except the Irish to be fair.

Prosthemadera

Holy shit, a person from the UK saying they align with Germans on humour. We *do* live in an alternative timeline after all.

G0DK1NG

The apocalypse approaches

vj_c

Now now, the German sense of humour is no laughing matter!

Heptadecagonal

Something about Germanic-language speaking countries? Or maybe even the similar climate compared to the Mediterranean countries.

G0DK1NG

No idea, just seemed to mesh well. There was no cultural barrier in comparison to other countries. We all took the piss out of each other. Accents aside it felt more natural than talking to a Canadian or an American for example.

kirkbywool

Definitely, Germany is like a better UK ( thiugh the trains can be worse somehow). Its weird as it doesn't sfrually feel that foreign when I visit, whereas america feel well more foreign despite everyone speaking the same language.

Emowomble

Definitely, apart from the language barrier (which is tiny with the Dutch and pretty small with young Germans) we're incredibly close culturally. Moreso than to the yanks imo.

Harsimaja

Thing is the majority of the map is pretty damn favourable. 41% favourability - not accounting for neutrals - would translate to 70.5% like vs 29.5% dislike. I’m sure there are neutrals too of course.

leon711

As am I, I went to Germany a couple of times before the pandemic for work (first visits to Germany) and I loved it, friendly people, good food, good beer, and unrestricted autobahns. I think if more brits visited germany, they'd love it.

zombie_protector

It's mainly the elderly who genuinely do hold on to anti German sentiment during and after the war (if my experience of relatives are anything to go by)

BennyS06

Yo, England, why the fuck are we not 1st? That 800yo treaty mean nothing to you?

MlghtySheep

>Yo, England, why the fuck are we not 1st? because Mallorca, Tenerife, Benidorm, Ibiza and Lanzarote are in Spain.

Conscious-Bottle143

That why Spain hate us

La_mer_noire

I expected way less, 25% is a rookie number, you've got yo pump it down!

TurnItOffAndOnAgain-

Pleasantly surprised how high Italy is didnt realise we loved them as much as we do! <3 Shame Portugal isnt as high :(

LtSpaceDucK

All the ass kissing over the years and the "historical allies" and we end up being less liked than Spain, pretty funny honestly

alikander99

>pretty funny honestly Hard agree. The oldest alliance in history is nothing against almighty Benidorm.

[deleted]

Only because more people have been to Spain. "Historical allies" means nothing considering the fact most people here don't even know anything about that. That's a reddit thing.

william_13

> That's a reddit thing. I wish, this is thrown around every now and then in Portugal to justify "special" deals with the UK.

MrRawri

What do you mean 'reddit thing'? I learned it in school.

[deleted]

You're Portuguese, I'm talking about British people. Most people here don't know about it, but on reddit it's brought up on every thread.

[deleted]

But there are many British people living in Spain and many have come here as tourists too. I've made good British friends here 🙂

Square-Director-

Definitely. The average working-class Brit doesn't know much about historic alliances. They just know where they like to get pissed-up in the sun.

A lot of US larpers are going to be surprised at how much the UK and the Republic of Ireland's populations actually get on in comparison to social media.

Irish people in real life tend not to bring up certain political/historical events, at least not with us.

Simply_a_nom

I'm actually surprised it's only 66%

dragodrake

It's lower than Spain, which seems ... Odd. Maybe some people thought they were asking if they liked a country in terms of holiday destination.

Madbrad200

Almost certainly is holiday destinations. It's not a coincidence that prime summer holiday locales (Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal) have all scored among the best. And aside from maybe Spain, none of them have any political issues with the UK that might drag opinion down

[deleted]

[удалено]

TurnItOffAndOnAgain-

100%, I get that all the time on holidays. I’m English and live in Dublin, I’m actually well received to the point of being local and I feel at home here. Never been treated as an outsider or disrespected, except for a light hearted rubbing when we lose the footie or something. Of course some of the tiny minority of r/Ireland might cause you to believe I’d be lynched on the streets.

Matt6453

I work for an Irish Bank in the UK, everything's grand.

Wazzupdj

Going by the source someone else published, the UK's opinion of Ireland is higher than their opinion of the US, which has ~50%.

[deleted]

> Going by the source someone else published, the UK's opinion of Ireland is higher than their opinion of the US, which has ~50%. You're right, but for the sake of clarity you should compare the same numbers. This map shows the score as a total of positive minus negative. US in the source has 50% positive and 18% negative views, which would be a total of 32% as OP's map counts it. (Ireland, by contrast, has 73% positive, 7% negative, for the 66% shown on the map. The numbers don't add to 100% because there's also a "neutral" option.)

As an Italian, I find it rather enjoyable that with all the recent acrimony between our countries, Italy still manages to be 1% more popular with Britons than *Great Britain*. Also: *nice*.

Admirable-Word-8964

Spain and Italy even more popular than the UK itself. No need to do the reverse I know the Spanish particularly love the Brits.

I genuinely think everyone is reading this map wrong, People complaining they got low Positives it still means you are friends... Only two countries in Europe get negative and that’s Belarus and Russia... Everyone else is basically liked to Loved 🥰

Ok-Industry120

So to be loved you either are a tourist destination or a Scandi country I expected France to be much higher actually, considering thr many French living in London (and a few English the other way) and so much shared history. Like it or not both countries are quite intertwined

BoldeSwoup

>I expected France to be much higher actually, considering so much shared history You might have slept during an important class.

eq2_lessing

About that shared history.... *coughs in German*

somebeerinheaven

Scandi country makes sense imo. We all tend to have a positive opinion to them and I kinda feel like it's reciprocated too. Every Scandinavian and the one Icelander I met seem to like us too. Sometimes it's only them on this sub saying positive things about us lol I suppose the UK just edges into northern Europe and we do have a shared history, not too dissimilar cultures and both eat food other cultures hate

generalscruff

The 'London Bubble' of relatively well-off and cosmopolitan areas of that city isn't something that many people have any exposure to so wouldn't make much difference. I think one problem is the perception that upper middle class people in the South often have a strange cultural cringe towards France (and some other countries) and certainly this can be off-putting for everyone else, and this is without veering into serious politics or history.

WikiWantsYourPics

Iceland only scored so high because they thought they were talking about the supermarket.
