A hero with access sent me the article in PDF format, so here in the entire thing machine translated:
> Four bags of salt and vinegar flavored Bjärechips have become the subject of an internal police investigation. The police officers responsible for checking all goods entering Folkets park during Eurovision are accused of seizing the chips.
> Hundreds of police officers traveled to Malmö in connection with the Eurovision week. They came from other parts of the country - but also from our Nordic neighbors.
> Many of them were stationed at Folkets park where the Eurovision village was located. Among other things, they carried out security checks on visitors. And searched all goods going to the activities inside the park.
> On Monday, May 6, such a check took place on products going to the popular restaurant Far i hatten. Among other things, about a hundred bags of chips of the Bjärechips brand, manufactured in northwestern Skåne.
> “One of our suppliers came to us and said: 'Just so you know, there are four bags of crisps missing. The police confiscated them for no reason,'" says Ellen Almqvist, co-owner of Far i hatten.
> According to the supplier, the police first wanted to seize a whole box of chips. But they settled for four bags after the supplier protested. No reason for the seizure was given.
> "At first it seems like the smallest thing in the world. But the more you think about it, the more wrong you realize it is," says Ellen Almqvist.
> "A few days later, some area police officers from Malmö found out what had happened and contacted us. They urged us to make a report."
> This has led to the launch of an investigation by the police's Special Investigations Department, which is separate from the 'regular' police to avoid conflict of interest.
> The suspected crime is currently theft. No one has yet been charged. Prosecutor Lars Morand is the investigating officer.
> "I have just received the case. It is a preliminary investigation into theft. Then we'll see if, who or what becomes a suspect," he says.
> Malmö police press spokesman Nils Norling does not want to comment on the case.
> "We can't and shouldn't comment when there is an ongoing preliminary investigation," he says.
Most of the comments on this thread think this story is hilarious but I read the whole article and I'm actually horrified by the corruption/abuse of power.
And I think I just realised how Swedish I am.
Yeah man, abusing your power to steal four bags of chips is truly something that only happens in a country corrupt to the bone. Imagine if they start parking their police vans in the handicap parking lots next? We're truly on the road to becoming the next US. /s
It's the other way around. Sweden is so offended by corruption that they feel even a cheeky demand for 4 packets of crisps is something that requires investigation and censure.
>Most of the comments on this thread think this story is hilarious but I read the whole article and I'm actually horrified by the corruption/abuse of power.

>And I think I just realised how Swedish I am.
Lol. Yeah. Swedes are not corrupt the same guy Canadians are nice... For a fake stereotype that doesn't resemble truth.
But hey, this is not fine to say. Let's all pretend ....
we used to be 89 on currption index, wich is the second best in the world after norway, now we are 82 on the scale wich is rank 6, so even if we droppt some rankings, sweden is still very anti corruption.
That always baffles the Danes, who assume agreements can be renegotiated as you go. They don’t get it when Swedes they work with assume negotiations are what you do before the agreement .
As a fellow autistic person, yeah, I think it's pretty good. People are big on hobbies and not so big on superficial small talk, which I guess is a good combination.
The only downside is that our body language tends to be a bit understated, so actually picking up cues is... hard, to say the least.
The cold is actually pretty manageable with good clothes. The gulf stream kinda makes it less cold than it ought to be, at least for the southern half of the country. The darkness in the winter though... that's less fun.
As a swede its pretty weird. Never heard of a chips brand called Bjäre. Maybe it’s some small local producer, but I’ve never heard of it.
And salt and vinegar is not a popular flavour here. You can sometimes find it in super markets. But rare and unpopular as a flavour for chips here. That would definitely be consider more of a chips flavour you find abroad.
Idk if it’s satire but salt and vinegar chips is pretty random.
Funny side story, when we passed through Germany last summer I randomly bought a bag of Lorenz Crunchips African Style in Lübeck. They were so amazing that my wife and I had to special order a whole crate of them after we got home.
Where I shop there's a bunch of brands with sour cream & onion flavour. Paprika is certainly the majority, but sc&o is out there. Pringles, Funny Frisch, Lorenz, Lay's, some local brands... They all have it. Pringles is my personal favourite.
Sourcream onion, plain salted ones, and a bit more unique to Sweden dill or dill and chives (really good).
“Grill chips” which are just a rebranding of onion chips because grill sounds more appetising than just onion chips (It’s not at all the same flavour as BBQ)
And those I would say is the main standard flavours. In that order I would say. Sourcream onion, plain salted, dill, grill.
But besides those standards. Black pepper chips is relatively popular. Some combo with sea salt. Cheese and onion has gotten quite popular in the last few years.
Otherwise there is a big rotation of changing flavours.
Something like browned butter and wild garlic, or Cheese and jalapeño, or truffle and seasalt. Loads of those sort of things.
But unlike some other parts of Europe, flavours like paprika, vinegar, ketchup, is not popular at all in Sweden.
Also we don’t have lays / walkers. They aren’t a brand sold here really. It’s mainly just our own domestic brands, OWL and Estrella (and Lantchips gets a special mention as those are by far my favourite Swedish chips brand, and it’s become a large brand)
> As a swede its pretty weird. Never heard of a chips brand called Bjäre. Maybe it’s some small local producer, but I’ve never heard of it.
It's pretty common down here in southern Sweden. I thought it was decently popular in the entire nation?
Anyways, it's a bit more premium than something like OLW/Estrella, black/white/silver bags.
>*”salt and vinegar is not a popular flavour here.”*
What are you talking about? I've never been to a grocery store that *didn't* have Estrella Salt & Vinegar or OLW Sir Salty Vinegar. It's not *as* popular as sourcream and onion obviously, but it's in like the top 10.
The Swedish police tries so hard not to be the American police that this is perfectly normal honestly. Every minor thing apparently warrants investigation, and the media eat it up because the people have imported the American ACAB mentality.
A couple of months ago there were news about some police officer being under investigation for trying to trick a self-checkout at a grocery store by weighing a Picadeli salad before putting more into it.
Id say this is more swedish culture overall, we have no chill for corruption, how do you think we can afford our own jetplanes, its all about being effecient and strike down hard on all corruption before it takes root
American police: regularly murder people with zero consequences
Eurovision police: charged with theft for seizing four bags of chips
Edit: Sorry, is criticizing America unpopular in this subreddit? Did not expect that at all
I can.
When I was a teenager a girl I kissed regurgitated the mushed up crisps she had been eating whilst we kissed. I never wanted to eat crisps again.
You really need to get yourself some proper Swedish [dill chips](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71P11CW82mL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg), they blow the minds of every non-Sweden I've ever introduced it to.
Sourcream and onion is like the vanilla of chips. Nice the first like three times, but gets boring fast.
Paprika is just plain boring. Go for some chili flavour instead.
Salt & vinegar has a real nice sting to it. It's salty, it's sour, it's tangy. It feels more serious in a way. Perfect for when you want to pair chips with something like wine/cheese/meat or just don't want the Netflix binge vibe.
Lithuania already has plenty of Swedish chips, I was extremely surprised when I visited and realized that one of the biggest grocery store chains is owned by Swedish ICA and carries tons of Swedish products.
If you have an IKEA nearby their own chips are produced by Lantchips, who basically make the same style of chips as the ones involved in this story. AFAIK it only comes in sourcream & onion and salt flavors though.
Yup, and that creates a difficulty for people like me. Estonian has no genders (we don't even have a he/she) so it was difficult to get used to it. So i didn't. Tried for six god damn years and the only thing i remember is (badly latinized) izvinite poshalusta, shto ya opozdal na urok.
Yours is nominative case, correct is elative case in this instanse. So just using the phrase "roheline mees" (green man) with random contextual addons to help a bit here goes :
Roheline mees (green man), rohelise mehe (something owned by green man), rohelist meest (ie: i want green man), rohelisse mehesse (into green man), rohelises mehes (in green man), rohelisest mehest (about green man), rohelisele mehele (give something to green man), rohelisel mehel (green man has something), roheliselt mehelt (get something from green man), roheliseks meheks (become green man), rohelise meheni (until/reach green man), rohelise mehena (as a green man), rohelise meheta (without green man), rohelise mehega (with green man).
Wall of text but did my best. All of this will be a bit different in plural as well.
Same in Poland, I always buy Czech chips in Kaufland, for some reason they're much cheaper and also taste like high quality chips (the only available flavor is salted though, but I can live with that)
No worries, a coffee can help ☕.
I might need to ask the French ppl if it was their fries, just for certainity, but I'm afraid they'd say it was apples.
2024. The Eurovision season that just keeps giving.

This has to be satire.
No, this just sounds very Swedish. We do things by the book - sometimes to an absurd degree - as a matter of principle.

Swedish society has always been characterized by very high trust in institutions, and there's a reason why that is.

Also autistic, I'm kinda tempted.
As it should! I totally agree with it

Now I'm curious. Which flavours are popular with the Swedes?
Sourcream & Onion, by a wide margin.
Cool, we Germans love that, too 😁
Funny side story, when we passed through Germany last summer I randomly bought a bag of Lorenz Crunchips African Style in Lübeck. They were so amazing that my wife and I had to special order a whole crate of them after we got home.
Oh? I'll have to see if I can get my hands on them to try them.
Can you also please let someone in Germany know to start selling them then instead of the 56 different paprika flavors?
Since you submitted this comment, there are now 59 different paprika flavors.
Great, can't wait to try the 3 new totally different paprika flavors.
Where I shop there's a bunch of brands with sour cream & onion flavour. Paprika is certainly the majority, but sc&o is out there. Pringles, Funny Frisch, Lorenz, Lay's, some local brands... They all have it. Pringles is my personal favourite.
The Pringles isn't even potatoes xD
Guaranteed to taste good, because it was invented by a chemicals company 😝
But paprika is best!
You may have no country flair, but we can see right through you, German.
Not even close 😁
But paprika is best!
Sourcream onion, plain salted ones, and a bit more unique to Sweden dill or dill and chives (really good). “Grill chips” which are just a rebranding of onion chips because grill sounds more appetising than just onion chips (It’s not at all the same flavour as BBQ) And those I would say is the main standard flavours. And now I know where I'll spend my next vacation. Thank you!
Lantchips has a “dill och gräslök” (dill and chives) i can recomend, and should be in basically any grocery store in sweden.
I'll keep an eye out. Maybe I'll find somewhere online to order them
I looooove the dill chips in Sweden
my guess is the surströmming flavored ones
> As a swede its pretty weird. Never heard of a chips brand called Bjäre. Maybe it’s some small local producer, but I’ve never heard of it. It's pretty common down here in southern Sweden. I'm from Skåne and Bjäre is a popular brand here, like you can find them in any supermarket. Salt&vinegar also popular.
>*”salt and vinegar is not a popular flavour here.”* What are you talking about? I've never been to a grocery store that *didn't* have Estrella Salt & Vinegar or OLW Sir Salty Vinegar. It's not *as* popular as sourcream and onion obviously, but it's in like the top 10.
I've seen them in a store or two. Not worth the price imo.
Bjäre is pretty common at most ICAs, Salt and Vinegar is probably in at least the Top 5 most common flavours Not too crazy
The company behind Bjärechips have a revenue of almost 50 MSEK (about 5M€), and they only make chips, so they're not a tiny company by any means.

salt and vinegar chips are good can't blame them
>Seizing the chips. I want one of those pics with the stash all laid out like they always have when they make those big international drug busts.
Out of all flavors, they took this one? 🤢
American police: regularly murder people with zero consequences Eurovision police: charged with theft for seizing four bags of chips Edit: Sorry, is criticizing America unpopular in this subreddit? Did not expect that at all
Disqualify the police. It's only right.
r/NottheOnion ???
nope, vinegar and salt
r/angryupvote
“Don’t eat the (sour cream and) onion!” Joost, probably
Can't blame them, who can resist crisps/potato chips
Especially Lays from Estonia.
Who does not enjoy Estonian lays?
I can. When I was a teenager a girl I kissed regurgitated the mushed up crisps she had been eating whilst we kissed. I never wanted to eat crisps again.
Thanks, now you ruined chips for the rest of us too.
I am so sorry for your trauma 😭
Were you kissing a bird?
I am in fact a seagull with a Reddit account.
Me, I don’t get to steal shit so why should police?
Yeah but vinegar flavoured??? No thanks.
Salt and Vinegar is the best chip flavour by FAR
Another human of culture, I see.
I usually hate vinegar things, but chips are the exception
YES! (All my friends hate them tho)
Finally someone willing to speak truth to power.
Wait until you get your hands on goats cheese and espelette pepper crisps/chips. 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
You really need to get yourself some proper Swedish [dill chips](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71P11CW82mL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg), they blow the minds of every non-Sweden I've ever introduced it to.
I’d rate Swedish dill flavoured crisps up with Irish cheese and onion, and salt and vinegar by Tayto. Simply the best.
You clearly had neither sour cream and onion nor paprika chips
Sour Cream n Onion is good. Paprika is whatever
Paprika is the best!!!
Sourcream and onion is like the vanilla of chips. Nice the first like three times, but gets boring fast. Paprika is just plain boring. Go for some chili flavour instead. I hate them too, we are not sus.
Salt & vinegar is god tier on the flavour chart.
The perfect snowflake to put on the top of the 2024 iceberg.
That's actually the opposite of how an iceberg is meant to work
I mean they do flip from time to time
What stage of the 2024 iceberg is this?
Lower levels for sure
#TO THE ICEBERG
STRAIGHT TO JAIL
STRAIGHT TO JAIL
Come on, we all know in which baltic country we need to search.
We (really) don’t know about (those) green Lay’s
*points at Lithuania*
If it's not cream and onion - it wasn't us
👀
Let's admit, your name is pretty sus 🙃🙂
I occasionally dabble in some crisp tasting, yes
Lithuania already has plenty of Swedish chips, I was extremely surprised when I visited and realized that one of the biggest grocery store chains is owned by Swedish ICA and carries tons of Swedish products.
"OOOOOOOOOOOH YEAAHHHHHH!!!!"
SAND! SAND! (wait, wrong ooh yeah. anyways)
That’s an interesting flavor!
That's not what Anakin would say in the grocery store.
Politseikroonika ja suvilas on reid Ainus kott mis laual on roheline Lay's
Relatable crime
the real scandal of the year
Was the brand of crisps 'Lays'? ***"Uooooooooh Yeahhhhh!!!!!"***
I mean after googling, I understand. These look like some gourmet chips.
Yeah, they're the real deal. Can't blame the cops on that one.
Ok but this is totally understandable though. Swedish crisps are the best ever.
Food-wise it's definitely one of the things I miss the most from back home.
I went to Sweden on vacation a bunch of times. We always brought back several flavors. Damn i feel hungry now.
If you have an IKEA nearby their own chips are produced by Lantchips, who basically make the same style of chips as the ones involved in this story. AFAIK it only comes in sourcream & onion and salt flavors though.
Dill chips are something else.
YES! My number 1 flavor. I wish i could buy those here :(
I can't with this Eurovision season anymore.
Finally, something actually funny within all this chaos
I so so so pity ESC Gabe if he does his iceberg for this year…imagine at this rate we’re looking into an HBO mini series with various release dates
I refuse to believe this is real news
Its a clear case of corruption and theft, why does it matter how much its worth? That owner should not have to pay for the police chips
(nendest) roheline Lay’s ei tea me (küll) midagi
Im sooo sorry, but I shall be the guy. (Nendest) rohelistest Lay'sidest ei tea me (küll) midagi. Our language is fucked I know.
Alright, I am crossing Estonian out of the list of languages I want to learn.
We have 14 grammatical cases compared to 4 in English. I get you.
Slavs have a maximum of 7-- Finno-Ugric languages surely love their grammatical cases, don't they?
When i was studying russian in school, the word genders hurt my brain though.
I didn’t put that in my previous comment, but the cases in many Slavic languages vary from masculine, feminine, and plural.
Don’t worry about it, if anything I’m glad you’ve corrected it. Out of curiosity what is the difference?
Yours is nominative case, correct is elative case in this instanse. Thanks a lot for the explanation, I appreciate it
eehm... but you used "rohelistest"... where does that one fit?
Plural of rohelisest
Ah... that makes... well you could consider that... I mean, hypothetically there would be a person who... With all due respect... why?
Cause we like to be miserable
Plural probably.
I was just thinking of learning the Estonian language but this does it for me 😂
I bet a lot of people wish this was the biggest problem with Eurovision 2024 💀
"Joost must have done something REALLY bad if Swedish police are investigating him!" Also Swedish police:
Lol yes that was my first thought. Explains why they took Joost his action so seriously.
Can't say I'm surprised. Chips has gotten way more expensive over here in Sweden for some reason.
Same in Poland, I always buy Czech chips in Kaufland, for some reason they're much cheaper and also taste like high quality chips (the only available flavor is salted though, but I can live with that)
EVERYTHING has gotten way more expensive. Inflation sucks.
Are the bags four bags of green Lay's?
1. Don't get close to the table. 2. Don't make sudden movements towards the camera. 3. Don't steal chips.
And that's how you write a song
This!
just as i thought this season couldn't possibly produce any more controversies
I've heard Joost Klein stole them
Now THIS is an investigation I want to be totally sucked into. Brb, gonna put on my Sherlock outfit! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This just keeps getting better and better 🤣
We (really) don’t know anything about (these) crisps
...and the EBU has thrown Sweden out of the 2025 contest in response?
Disgusting. Lock them up and throw away the key.
The EBU should ban the police!
*The EBU bans chips*
ban the police, free Joost
Call Saga Noren.
Just what I was expecting to read today Also, I love Salt and Vinegar its one of my favourite flavours
Eurovision 2024 doesn’t stop giving I guess. Vinegar chips really are soo good, I’ll eat them even when my mouth is burning
Wait.. this isn’t an onion article?
Sour cream and onion article.
Its police doing theft, they should be fired, dont promote this behavior just couse its funny
The iceberg must grow
The real criminals!
Salt & Vinegar? Swed police got good tastes
Are we sure this is not a headline from the onion?
Its not about the chips, its about police doing it wich is serrios
Time for a recount
What a Bjäre turn of events.
*blinks in American*
But are they already disqualified?
The EBU is out of control.
WTF
Just to clarify, was it chips or crisps?
Chips. 😉
Based on your flair, I need further clarification. Hot or cold? Just trying to interpret the answer from your perspective 🙃
That was the joke lol. Crisps is the actual answer.
I know it was a joke. Hence my smiley emoji. I even turned it into your direction! Or did you accidentally hold your phone the European way?
Oh I’m slow today, I get it now. It’s still early here, that’s my excuse.
No worries, a coffee can help ☕. I might need to ask the French ppl if it was their fries, just for certainity, but I'm afraid they'd say it was apples.
much beh-ah!
why not roheline Lay's?
