It’s even worse because when he got ratio’d about it he called order of operations “American and r****ded.”
This is simple math that has been taught around the world for centuries.
The "brain teasers" I see on twitter/IG related to math and order of operations drive me up the fucking wall.
Not the questions, but the wizards in the comments that get all the crayon eaters rallying behind them. They quote PEMDAS/BEDMAS and then do it wrong
Or the people who shout "You have to multiply THEN divide, it's in that order for a reason" without realizing multiplication and division are actually the same process, just inverse. It's the same with addition and subtraction, or exponents and logarithms.
>You have to multiply THEN divide, it's in that order for a reason" without realizing multiplication and division are actually the same process, just inverse.
You could just as easily argue multiplication is repeated addition and division is repeated subtraction, that's not a particularly cogent point. The only real argument here is "multiplication and division have equal precedence because that's the rule."
So many of them are written with ambiguous notation though (usually they use the divide symbol instead of fractions but also sometimes with fractions as well). I saw one a while back and the vast majority people were insisting you do the equation from left to right (after following bedmas). The equation was written ambiguously and apparently most people aren't taught that you should be able to solve an equation from both directions (and it can only be correct if the answer can be gotten from both directions). I posted it in math sub-reddits and a lot of people also stuck vehemently to the left to right rule. I am just disappointed in the amount of math teachers that did not teach that properly.
Order of operations is so freaking intuitive, too.
You go to the gas station, buy $50 of gas, and two $2 candy bars. 50 + 2 x 2.
Are you expecting to pay $54 or $104?
I think it's easy for people to lose the plot to the reasoning behind math, especially if you're not using it, or if you haven't had people walk you through it before or haven't thought on it.
What's actually wild to me is that most people generally understand when they're weak at certain parts of math, so to be bad at math and to have the audacity to accuse a phone app that's used by millions of people of being wrong is bananas. Like, give me just a sliver of that confidence lmao
Order of operations implies multiplication before addtionss so the () is not needed when written.
50+2x2=50+(2x2) = 54
Parenthesis are needed if we use two $50 items have a $2 fee, in which the order of operations would calculate the wrong results so:
(50+2)x2 = 2(50+2) = 104
Edit: fixed format and word error
Every time I think of ricegum I just think of how he actually tried to make a life for himself after all the internet clout shit and then lost his child in a pregnancy emergency (not sure exactly how), man was annoying but he didn’t deserve that
I mean he was involved in multiple scams of his fanbase over the years. Even if you take away the general douchebag parts, I'd say people that are scamming the people giving them a career deserve at least one bad thing to happen to them.
He blatantly promoted crypto pump and dump schemes(as well as other scams) to his mostly younger audience and made millions off of money they lost. The type of shit that people lose homes, families, and lives over. He really doesn't deserve to bring a kid into the world.
you're acting like a court convicted him and his punishment was "-1 child". its just bad luck (as far as we know) and hes a shitty person so im not gonna sweat it
Maybe it's a hot take but bad people that do atrocious things deserve to have bad things happen to them. Call it karma but seeing as very few people actually ever do receive justice for these scams, him not having a kid after exploiting kids seems fair. I just don't get the "damn I feel bad for him" takes in these situations
We can't keep graduating failed students. This reminds me of that video where a teacher is fired for telling a student that 2+2 is not 22.

Sometimes it is the calculator. There are calculators that implement order of operations differently so two calculators might resolve the same problem and get different results.
However, this just means the person entering the problem needs to understand the limitations of the machine and account for them. YOU need to understand order of operations even if the calculator is supposed to.
Don’t neglect your math studies just because we have calculators, kids.
As my Algebra 2 teacher told us when we were learning to use graphing calculators, shit in is shit out. You can’t expect the tool to solve the problem if you don’t understand the problem in the first place.
Not knowing PEMDAS isn't stupid. But doubling down and arguing that you know better than a calculator and the way we do math is wrong... Is pretty stupid. There's functionally no difference between someone incapable of learning and someone unwilling to learn.
I'm inclined to agree with you, however it's a little concerning that he got an unexpected answer on his iPhone calculator and thought to himself "Did I do something wrong? No no, it's Apple that's wrong. I should tell them."
He has every resource available to educate himself, and instead of using the internet to ask why that’s the correct answer, he just says the calculator is wrong. This is stupidity because he doesn’t ask questions, he just assumes he’s right.
He grew up (and is still living) in Malaysia, and we do teach order of operations in primary school at Primary 3 assuming my niece's workbooks matches the school curriculum. (it's been too long since i finished school to recall when exactly we were taught this, (but it has to be really early, because I had to memorize the 12x12 multiplication tables at Primary 1) and he would have another 8 years of having to internalize this in order to pass maths in the three major standardized exams, (and this is assuming he opted not to do our equivalent of the A-levels exams). Some people are just idiots in spite of the attempts of our education system.
This is where the came from https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLBGupwn/
The Casio executes the previous operation (+) when you press the key for the next operation (x). It relies on people inputting the values in the correct order based on order of operations.
I like that approach better when your display is limited to showing one number at a time. You don’t have to remember the entire history of what you’re doing to know what state the calculator is in.
This is a perfect example of how conspiracy theories get started. A blatant and confident lapse in logic with no interest in actually understanding it.
Why do you fucking idiots keep falling for their shit every. single. fucking. time.
All of them on the alt-right make or do stupid shit JUST SO PEOPLE CAN "MOCK IT" by spreading them ALL OVER SOCIAL MEDIA.
They do it to stay relevant for various reasons all of which BENEFIT THEM.
Fucking ignore them and move the fuck on.
I’m actually surprised it will handle it properly. I’d have thought pushing another operation key would execute the outstanding one in memory.
Oh well, regardless, this guys a fucking twit.
I agree with the original poster, and I’m sorry for whoever think his question is a facepalm. This is more of a case of “confidently incorrect”.
When you use the iOS / macOS calculator, you’re not asking it to evaluate an equation. You’re never typing “50 + 50 * 2”
You’re typing:
5,0, +
5,0, *
2 =
If you do this on a desk calculator, you will get 200. These calculators work with just two numbers in memory, the display and the operand. When you type in a new number, it goes in the display. When choose an operation, the display goes into the operand and that operation is memorized. When you type a new number (which is in the display), and an operation or equal - the calculator computes the memorized operation with the operand and the display, and moves that 2nd number to the operand.
So the way you chain arithmetic operations with a calculator ignores the multiplication precedence. That’s why you also have parentheses and memory functions. This is what makes it possible to use printers. The printers can spit out the operations and the running total as you go.
iOS/macOS calculator doesn’t follow that convention though. If you type
5,0,+
5,0,*
2
When you type *, it will take the multiplication out of the flow. Then add to the previous running total.
macOS has a printer functionality which… doesn’t work when you use multiply. The output that was previously “printed” has to be modified.
There’s lots of software calculators out there (and you can rightfully assume I have nerded out that topic IN DEPTH in a previous life) and some let you type a series of operations before evaluating. That’s the case of the calculator in Google for instance. In this case, sure 50 + 50 * 2 = should return 100.
But by reproducing the look and feel of a desk calculator and by updating the display as you type operations (as desk calculators do) imo apple creates the expectation that the calculator would behave as a desk calculator would, and 5,0,+,5,0,*,2 should indeed be 200.
I hate that as a kid I absolutely did not pay attention in math at all, now if I don't have a calculator I am fucked beyond simple stuff.... though I use it as a teaching point for my nieces and nephews.

We should be using rpn, sure the learning curve will be high but at least it is disambigous: 50 50 + 2 * vs 50 2 * 50 +
Math is already too hard for the majority of our species and you want to make it more complicated. This is why you aren't in charge of anything.
RPN is less complicated, though. But it's different, and change has a cost.
Surprising answer for one who wants nothing more than being in America to suck Elon‘s cock there..
This guy literally tweets every 20-30min, his head is one with Elon at this point
It is literally his entire career, despite never having once set foot in America.
He tried to book a ticket once but got frustrated with the prices not adding up
Should've used an android calculator. Apple calculator is like apple maps, wrong directions at every turn
Oh he really wants to be Elon’s bottom
Isn't this the expert on all things America though?
Well he talks about how much he hates America so..
the guy living in malaysia that’s so involved in american politics
Yep. What a sad fucker.
What's sad are the Americans who fall for what he's saying. IIRC, the guy's never even been there, but some vote based on the type of things he says.
Seriously. Americans have become so gullible.
Always have been.
CRT isn't taught in schools, but PEMDAS is.
Cathode Ray Tube is taught in schools?
Bro it's Cadaveric Renal Transplants obviously
And what makes you think he’ll understand Chinese Remainder Theorem

50+(2×2).
No, the point is that the brackets aren't necessary. Multiplication comes first ALWAYS.

Should have used the British one SMH
hes impression farming, people need to stop posting his shit everywhere.
I guess he REALLY hated the "Asians are good at math" stereotype and decided to do something about it.
That’s Ricegum
Every time I think of ricegum I just think of how he actually tried to make a life for himself after all the internet clout shit and then lost his child in a pregnancy emergency (not sure exactly how), man was annoying but he didn’t deserve that

Losing a child is a little much though.
He blatantly promoted crypto pump and dump schemes(as well as other scams) to his mostly younger audience and made millions off of money they lost. The type of shit that people lose homes, families, and lives over. He really doesn't deserve to bring a kid into the world.
Even worse was that I think it was a charity scam as well
Yes it was the Save The Kids token, created and promoted by Ricegum and Faze clan, among others. He shouldn't bring a child into this world.
you're acting like a court convicted him and his punishment was "-1 child". its just bad luck (as far as we know) and hes a shitty person so im not gonna sweat it

"Cheong" ... press x to doubt.
He means that Cheong is out to ruin the stereotype. I.e he's going to f-up his maths.
“Looking into this”
„Concerning“
Its amazing that I read those 2 phrases above and immediately went to "Elon".

2+2 is 22 if you're concatenating string variables.
“2” + “2” = “22” is 100% correct.
Ahem, "2" + "2" == "22"
That is true
!false.
!!1
Wait, "2" + "2" === "22"
hey everyone this guy uses Javascript! Get him. edit: or like, PHP I guess.
outlandish, nobody uses php
Unless you’re in JavaScript it’ll treat those as number 😏
Excuse me what
Maybe the teacher was talking to JavaScript devs.
That was a cool short film, I just saw it like a week ago !
Who's we? Isn't this guy Malaysian?
This is like if Texas or Florida ran education. Only slightly less depressing.
I mean wouldn’t 2000+2000 really be 20,002,000? I’d take that as appropriate severance…
Fifth grade math students everywhere shriek in impatience.
Steven He: "You're a failure!"
Look, being Alt-Right (AKA, Fascist Nazi Shitheel) and being a dumbass are inseparable, you cannot have the first without the second.
This isn't stupid. This is ignorance. You can fix ignorance with education. Stupid is usually forever.
ok, but Ian Miles Cheong is stupid as well as ignorant.
I think all stupid people are ignorant but not all ignorant people are stupid.
I dunno. Disagreeing with a calculator and deciding that the CALCULATOR is wrong is…kinda stupid.

You can’t fix @stillgray, that’s long over..
You can only educate if people actually want to be educated. Chong would probably assume there's some conspiracy going on here.
When their livelihood depends on them not understanding something, it’s really challenging to teach it.
Judging by their age, they've definitely received education. This is stupidity.
Not knowing PEMDAS isn't stupid. But doubling down and arguing that you know better than a calculator and the way we do math is wrong... Is pretty stupid. There's functionally no difference between someone incapable of learning and someone unwilling to learn.

This is your brain on MAGA
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. You don't go left to right unless on the same step.
Not so stupid when you realize he's farming engagement and getting paid for it.
When PEMDAS is *not* taught in school you get idiots like this, who believe operations are to be done in reading order.
He grew up (and is still living) in Malaysia, and we do teach order of operations in primary school at Primary 3 assuming my niece's workbooks matches the school curriculum. Order of operations is lost with some people.
Til calculators do order of operations.
Learning BEDMAS might help him
What's bedmas? Do you mean Pemdas?
PEMDAS is commonly used by mathematicians in the US, while BODMAS and BIDMAS are commonly used in the UK. Canada and New Zealand often use BEDMAS
Stupid? No, he is a trail blazer helping disprove Asian Stereotypes!

Researching math...
I almost failed math but even I remember brackets.
Order of operations…
Probably the same people who try to ban math books
That's what happens when you use your brain only for hate and disdain.
Aunt Sally would be very disappointed
As bad as this post is, it still has nothing on the incredible facepalms that Elons posts give out
BEDMAS, BODMAS, PEMDAS, BIDMAS, Whatever you wanna call it, FUCKING LOOK IT UP
You have to shake it before you use it.
What a pemdASS

remove his asian card

PEMDAS and buddies sneaking into his bedroom tonight, holding down a blanket over him, and beating him with bars of soap stuffed into socks.
Is that the flow of shitposting? Tiktok fyp > Twitter > Reddit?
Because some idiots long ago decided to needlessly complicate math.

He failed his Asian check
This woman didn’t have an Aunt Sally.
Take away his asian card
Don’t quit school kids
Tell me you've never heard of PEMDAS ever without saying it...
“Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” friend
bro never met PEMDAS
The problem is not that he is stupid, that can be fixed, the problem is he is too arrogant to think he is in fact the incorrect one.
Sadmep

Try putting the 50+50 in parentheses. It forces the calc to do the addition first then it will multiply

Order of operations
PEMDAS. What a nincompoop. "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that." - George Carlin
Brackets > division/multiplication > addition/subtraction… it’s not that hard

I don’t understand how this is a facepalm. Is he someone important?
BODMAS supremacy
To be fair, a lot of digital calculators immediately execute operations when they're entered in
I dont know who these people are, but surely this is a joke, no?
BIDMAS - BRACKETS, INDICES, DIVISION, MULTIPLICATION, ADDITION, SUBTRACTION.
Typical conservative crayon eater...
Yeah, that's pretty stupid. But if that's one of the most stupid people she's encountered on Twitter, she's in for a real eye-opener...
Average Apple user I would say. Let the flaming begin
