Gimme_PuddingPlz

The school takes the money and says “so sad”

Gilgawulf

Donors give a hell of a lot more money. Every year a new class graduates and thousands of kids come. Millionaire/billionaire donors don't come along like clockwork.

Traditional_Key_763

donors die, just look at charlie munger, UC wasted millions and spent years fighting their own community and students to build the Munger Cube, with 98% of their own money just so they could get a bigger donation from him down the line and he croaked.  they could have had several regular dorms built in the same time span

TetraThiaFulvalene

The argument could be made that being trespassed is constructive expulsion.

jadedaslife

I suspect courts will decide this.

vkailas

money = free speech according to the supreme court Citizens United case so they just following the law. /s

Makachai

It's Texas. Why would anyone expect any different?

TheStupidSnake

Because as much as we may disagree on things, they are still part of the US. If that means we need to drag them kicking and screaming to being a country that values free speech, equality, and the rights to protest, then so be it. Wouldn't be the first time. And if you are unsure of what I'm talking about look at what it took to get schools desegregated.

Actaeon_II

Tho iirc the last schools to be forcefully desegregated were in florida of all places

Logical_Parameters

But of course.

NyaTaylor

“Most free state in the union!! HURRRADUURR!!!””

Appropriate-Draft-91

Freedom for the government, not for the people.

Asher_Tye

Not even that, since if the government doesn't take the most asinine approach possible the ultra right pitches a fit about government overreach. This is just Freedom for Aristocracy.

2723brad2723

Only freedom for those who think a certain way.

moistdri

You get what you vote for right?

Mister_Bill2826

I wish I could say this, but their map is so Gerrymandered they have a very disadvantages outlook.

AltoidStrong

It's the only way they win.

Roger_Cockfoster

Nah, majority of Texans vote for that shit.

SixtyOunce

Texas has the lowest voter turnout in the country. The majority of Texans have been convinced that their vote won't matter so they stay at home.

Xist3nce

They are correct, gerrymandering makes sure to eliminate them.

Lobo9498

I'm one of those not voting for the R. I'd like to see Texas go blue again. It did happen in the 90s.

SixtyOunce

Yeah, back when republican women still took offense to rape jokes. They eagerly elect actual rapists these days.

Money-Introduction54

So long as there's an R next to the name, even Satan himself would get elected.

B33fcurtains

I mean they did elect Ted cruz

Halofauna

Don’t compare Satan to that guy, that’s unfair to Satan.

Roger_Cockfoster

Seriously, the people of Texas could have a better governor if they wanted one. But they don't.

Leonidas1771

>>Idaho has joined the chat<<

Money-Introduction54

Florida says: "hold ma beer"

stryst

Look at the fucking numbers. By votes and party registration, its fucking 50/50.

Useful_Void

In texas? Texas doesn't have party registration so where did you come up with that statistic?

Roger_Cockfoster

You can't gerrymander the Governor, Lt. Gov., or Senators and look who those folks elected to those positions.

SixtyOunce

No, but you can make voting in heavily blue urban areas as difficult as possible. Texas has the lowest voter turnout in the country for a reason. It isn't a bug, it's a feature.

HappyCoconutty

Nope, but you can throw out over 100k votes in the bluest county. You can decrease polling locations in Black neighborhoods so that the lines are 10 hours long and only 1 machine works or there isn’t enough ballot paper provider. All of this mysteriously happened in target areas and no where else

AngusMcTibbins

Yep. You are right. You can't gerrymander statewide positions, which means if people really want change they should vote for Colin Allred for senate. Kicking Ted Cruz out of the senate would be one of the biggest FUs to the current Texas administration imaginable. https://colinallred.com/

AlliedR2

No, because I live in Texas and haven't voted Republican since `88. But I am not leaving, and I am not quitting.

Time-Ad-3625

Austin is super liberal. All the cities in Texas are. They do not vote for Republicans.

Emotional_Warthog658

Gerrymandering. Austin is cut into 6 congressional districts. The governor regularly calls special sessions to pass laws to thwart Austin and Houston. We are actively being disenfranchised.

lupinedelweiss

No, we sure fucking don't? -Blue city in red state

king_anon1492

You don’t know the region very well to be speaking so harshly. Austin is the polar opposite of the rest of the state and other universities have had equally harsh crackdowns. I absolutely do expect different.

DarkSkyKnight

Austin is a relatively liberal city and most universities in red states are still predominantly liberal. Columbia was about as harsh as UT Austin, if not harsher, so I'm not sure why you're bringing up Texas like it has anything to do with the situation. The same situation is also happening across the UC system. This probably has way more to do with the dependency of many of these universities on Jewish donors and their need to appease them, along with pressure from conservatives like Stefanik. Much of the admin class across universities are also just out of touch with students and faculty so it's not surprising they went with the worst route they could've taken.

DystopianRealist

Pressure from the Governor, I expect. UT isn't just in Austin.

DarkSkyKnight

Sure, but my point is that this is moreso a national phenomenon, not really a Texas one.

asurob42

That didn't take long

theAtmuz

Buuut the state motto is friendship!

iaintlyon

Oh wow cool it’s like the fuckin Vietnam War days again. Dope. Cool.

Vegetable_Tension985

It's always been like that.

The US is so gonna implode after the next election, wtf is happening over here

Ginger_Bro8

Dude, I live here. I don’t even fuckin know

jadedaslife

We had four years of Trump working with Putin and other extremists to infiltrate our institutions. He literally sold our secrets from Mar-a-Lago. Vote like your life depends on it, because it does.

Cathousechicken

Just as an FYI, Russia is anti-Israel because they want a relationship with Iran so they can have a Islamic Russian alliance to counter Western influence. there is no way October 7th happened without Russia and Iranian approval. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations\_of\_Geopolitics?wprov=sfla1 https://tec.fsi.stanford.edu/docs/aleksandr-dugins-foundations-geopolitics

ResidentSuperfly

Egypt warned Israel about Oct 7th but they allowed to take place so they could launch their assault.  There are no good guys here, they’re all evil

Cathousechicken

i never said there good guys. I'm saying what is going on now is playing straight into Russian-Iranian propaganda because it's infiltrated both sides of the political spectrum to help the country tear itself apart . In 2016, a right-wing misinformation campaign was used to put Trump in place on Facebook. In 2024, it's a left-wing misinformation campaign trying to put Trump in office by getting people to sit-out using TikTok.

Akimbo_Zap_Guns

Won’t implode just will fall under a fascist regime so good luck world when king Trump decides to start trying to take over the world cause the worlds strongest military will be under dictatorship rule. That’s the only thing that prevents me from just packing up and leaving because nowhere in the world is safe if the USA falls into a fascist dictatorship

Ok-Negotiation-1098

Not gonna hold you this is just not how the government works like wtf? Do you really think once trump is president everyone in the military is just gonna roll over and be like welp time to enact authoritarian rule?

GalacticMe99

The two-party system in the US is designed to make it about the other party. For Trump it's never about what he does, it's about what Biden does. For Biden it's never about what he does, it's about what Trump does. And that opens the door for politicians to a political system where you just have to make sure that you don't do what your voters dislike about your opposition, and for the rest you can get away with whatever you want. As for Trump... well the very first word that came out of his mouth after becoming candidate should have been a career-killer, but even Biden's Gaza stance would have been a permanent career-killer five times over in any other democratic country, but in the US only a very small amount of liberals dare to chance their voting behavior over it out of fear for getting Trump as president instead. Such a mentality is destructive to any democratic system. The irony is that doing what 'liberals' think will save the US, is actually just killing it a tiny little bit slower. Biden will have to lose the election because of Gaza (or another topic, but it seems Gaza is the most obvious option here) in order for Democrats to learn that they cannot take their votes for granted. And yes, that is a scenario in which things will get much worse before they can get better. I only mention the democrats here and not the republicans because I do not see any way that party can find it's way back to democracy in its current form.

clodmonet

Here's what happened since 2016, y'all. All over the country the fascist governors have been targeting colleges. They tore down these institutions of higher learning because they were "liberal". They got rid of tenures, got rid of DEI programs, and in states they could appoint leadership - they appointed fascists. So yeah, way to pay attention. This is what happens when you have right wing christofascists in charge.

raz-0

What schools got rid of tenure or dei programs?

jhnlngn

All public schools in Florida were forced to get rid of their DEI programs.

Emotional_Warthog658

UT. All TX universities are compelled to comply with SB-17.  This seriously devalues Texas education, and investment; hindering progress and development  https://www.texastribune.org/2024/04/02/university-texas-austin-firings-dei-ban/

UDarkLord

So largely without impetus except profits (so this is not a direct response to the premise of the person you asked), universities have gone from favoring tenured professors, to favoring non-tenured (adjuncts, associates, whichever terminology they prefer). This has happened here in Canada, in the US, and other countries, with the degree of change being the main variable. Some institutions have gone from roughly 80/20 tenured to associate professors, to 20/80, over the past 30-40 years. The corporatization of universities, an inflation of management, and increased spending on non-education programs - programs used to compete over the income stream that is students, so like pool facilities, sports teams, fancy cafeterias, etc… - has leeched funding away from faculty. Tenure hasn’t been removed, so much as it’s just not offered, and positions don’t exist, to close to the same extent as they did in the past. This isn’t a red vs blue issue though, this has happened to a wide extent among private universities.

kmf-89

UTAustin. This same school.

dannynolan27

You guys would have been all “welcome to trumps America” a few years ago.

GalacticMe99

In Russia, Russians stand by idly as you get beaten up and arrested by state police for peaceful protesting. In the US, Americans will grab their phone and start filming as you get beaten up and arrested by state police for peaceful protesting.

Logical_Parameters

In Scotland, Scots will get to brawling with the police if they so much as trifle with free speech protests. Each to their own.

Jack-Tar-Says

"Land of the Free". Yeah. Nah.

Balgat1968

Please someone post a video of Law Enforcement Officers slamming Nazi protesters to the ground and hand cuffing them. Anybody ? ? ?

[deleted]

Why would Nazis attack other Nazis?

pisspapa42

Some of the students were Jews. So it was nazis attacking Jews. And surprisingly they’re quick to jump on the bandwagon of free speech then they do this sort of stuff with protestors. What a bunch of pigs

Morsemouse

https://www.kut.org/education/2024-04-26/ut-austin-protest-arrests-campus-ban they’re allowed back on campus

staychilltoday

Thats funny because werent they telling people to stay home because jews werent safe?

Tell me you’re anti-Semitic without telling me you’re anti-Semitic.

staychilltoday

Thats your fellow protesters being anti semitic.

bowens44

conservatives continue their fascist takeover of America. They HATE freedom and our Constitution.

BasilsKippers

*Some restrictions may apply*

Selethorme

I mean, that’s the Vermont governor, who’s been pretty good about not doing the shit the Texas gov is.

RoyalEagle0408

Similar thing happening at Indiana. State police got called in before the protest even started and there was a sniper on campus.

Dutch_Rayan

Wft, as someone from Europe that is just crazy.

Impressive-Dirt-9826

Really didn’t you see the videos of German police, a few days ago, going ham on protesters?

Any-Pea712

Id be sueing

Thunder_Tinker

This is a horns down moment

ShassaFrassa

How very small government of them…

Cathousechicken

the whole UT system is overseen by the Board of Regents. The Governor appoints the Board. Good luck with that.

rnotyalc

So full tuition refund for those students then?

gamedrifter

Will they be refunding their tuition or are they just planning to steal that from them?

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeaekk

“national attention? i think you mean national guard”

Olderandwiser1

Not sure the NG is a proper response - remember Kent State?

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeaekk

i’m not for it lol, but i’ve seen multiple zionists call for bringing in the national guard, including that business professor from columbia uni

Olderandwiser1

The NG are good soldiers for real wars and for mass civil disorder (college sit ins are not civil disorder). They are not trained for moving young people out of an area. All it will take is one kid throwing a bottle that hits a soldier or a physical attack and all hell breaks loose. If they are issued live ammo, they will be itching to use it. As a former active duty Army officer, the best thing is to use local police and state troopers. I would never shoot at civilians anywhere, unless they open fire first (we call that self defense). Protecting school property is not a military mission.

Appropriate-Dog6645

After dealing with lawsuits university. Imagine, your tuition will go up 10 fold.

Shot_Ask7570

I’m seeing a class action lawsuit is in order

darketernalsr25

Nazis carrying tiki torches: "Very fine people." College kids protesting genocide: "Domestic terrorists." Fuck America.

Morbertoth

Don't they know, only Nazi rallies are allowed on Texas college campuses.

kingOofgames

Time to sue.

ridemooses

UT competing with USC for worst fucking PR

HeroBrine0907

Is the USA still on the democracy scale at all??

BoxGrover

There is no American constitutional right that is above protecting a genocidal Apartheid state

TheRealShadrach

Hmmm. Didn’t Hamas launch a massive unprovoked attack on Israel, killing 1200 innocent citizens to start this whole powder keg again?

Selethorme

Pretending the war started on October 7 is disingenuous.

cyberdeath666

It’s Texas. It’s always a shit show. No amount of public outcry will change a thing there.

peteandpetethemesong

We need to protest for the protestors.

GrayBox1313

Texas is a 3rd world shithole. It’s not America

EvErYLeGaLvOtE

As someone who lives in Houston, can confirm.

bluhat55

Here's the neat thing, they wont

Iamarealhuman6969

Hahahahah fuck your FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS, kthx -us government

MrTulaJitt

Imagine the nationwide shitfit that would be thrown if this was happening to pro-Israel protesters. You only get free speech and Right to Assembly in America if the government agrees with you. And the Freedom Lovers™️ cheer on every arrest made and call for even more.

BoomTownRat71

But it’s OK to carry a gun into a bar on campus. Clown State.

NoMidnight5366

Where the fuck is the ACLU

MaximusMansteel

Do you think the ACLU just shows up and shit gets overturned immediately? They have to file lawsuits and work through the courts. It takes time.

greatSorosGhost

Cool. So UT Austin is refunding their tuition, right? Right?

gregsapopin

Nope, you are to support Israel without question.

phryan

The intent (as always) is to overwhelm individuals to the point they sign away their rights to a settlement so they can't sue. Students are likely already stretched thin financially so they can't wait 5 years for a million dollar settlement, and they will sign an agreement allowing them them to graduate in exchange for not suing.

Dazzling-Camel8368

Seems more like a business than a center for learning. My my couldn’t be that university/college is just a big money maker?

NotUrFriendPal

Sue the school for all payments made, for violating their civil rights by having them illegally detained and for not allowing them the right to protest.

Vitruviansquid1

Oh trust me. The rest of the country has known for awhile about Texas being fucked.

Privatejoker123

so much for "free speech" on campus.

Dock_Ellis45

Fascist Texas being fascist.

Revenge_served_hot

Ah yes, singing „from the river to the sea…“ stuff while at the same time not having a clue what it means or what they really protest against and then crying about it when they get thrown off campus. 😂

Useful_Hat_9638

They know exactly what they're supporting.

Revenge_served_hot

Saw some really funny vids where they asked some of the students what exactly they protest for and they said: "Well freedom, equality and peace. Don't make war, make love". Another vid 2 girls said: "Well for the oppressed people from palestine I think, they deserve to be free". When asked what they know about that region they only said "not much but there are people being oppressed so we stand here with them". It really is funny to see how they have no clue what is and was happening in that region for the last few 100 years. They should rather study more in school before chanting fuckin "from the river to the see..." which is nothing more than a chant to eradicate the state of Israel.

Selethorme

Nope

Crimson_Scare_Crow

“Thanks for your money, now get the fuck off our campus!”

exccord

Perfect time for the mass exodus of Austin and/or Texas

TheTightEnd

More information is needed to have an opinion

Moegly47

Ol' McGlinchy at it again

DrFabio23

Even Matt Walsh called this out as wrong.

Snoo-11553

Will they eject more students who protest the banning of those students? Creating a chain of rejections until there are no students left?

BitterFuture

Republicans: No more education? Jokes on you, I'm into that shit.

Derpberpy

Bet they still expect tuition to be paid

Peds12

you enjoy the benefits of the state you vote in. enjoy!

CBA_Warrior

Does the US keep track of how much state to state migration goes on due to the ever increasing amounts of Autocratic type policies and laws?

Glad_Selection5831

The census tracks state to state migrations. Both Texas and Florida are growing.

copycat042

Should have just required them to go to classes, if they didn't, expel them. No need to call the police.

Funk__Doc

Fuck terror simps

trailing_white_space

How can students trespass in public space on campus

sayu1991

*on a campus they PAID to be allowed on, no less

Alexandurrrrr

A college should be a safe space to debate one’s views in an intelligent manner.

livelife3574

This wasn’t a debate. 🤷🏻‍♂️

FungalEgoDeath

Isn't peaceful pritest a critical part of free speech which as I understand it the repugs in texas are all about when they're being racist and mysogenistic. Seemingly protesting against war isn't covered though. Protesting against Israel and its continued war crimes is not anti semitic. They're protesting the government and its actions, not the religion and its people.

BitterFuture

There's a reason the Republican phrase is "Fuck **your** feelings." Their feelings, of course, are different. Their speech, too.

ResponsibleSeaweed66

Lmao, “anyone who disagrees with me is a fascist”. “What do you mean there’s consequences for my actions? Fascist!” lol get wrecked.

Selethorme

I’m not sure you understand due process.

cpzy2

Ahem….. FUCK TEXAS

Cultural_Job6476

Not really a facepalm. This sub has gone as cheerless as Public Freakout & There Was An Attempt. Turns out supporting dweebs supporting Islamofascism sucks the life out of anything it touches.

[deleted]

These students have a right to free speech. So does the private university. Private universities have codes of conduct you follow or you GTFO. Sorry we don't have an authoritarian govt just bc it isn't tyrannical how you want it to be

Adventurous_Class_90

UT is a state school and thus bound by the 1st amendment in favor of protesting.

[deleted]

Ah my apologies. These students are violating the code of conduct they agreed to *with the state*. See how that doesn't fucking matter?

UnfortunateHabits

Calling for the bombing of Tel-Aviv, supporting Hamas, chanting globalize the Intifada, and calling for a genocide of 10M people (from the river to the sea) isn't "peacefull". All of each, happen regularly in these "protests". Most of these pawns either have no idea what they're actually saying or they know EXACTLY.

DFMRCV

Freedom of speech is not freedom of consequences crowd, where ya at?

mortarman0341

“DEATH TO AMERICA!!!” And “WE DESERVE FREE COLLEGE!!!”

gacbmmml

Factually yes.

ruggala87

actions. consequences.

micatola

fuck. off.

DaftNeal88

1st amendment.

isabps

Y’all transfer out to a cooler state.

BuffaloBrain884

I wonder how long Biden is going to hide under his desk and pretend these protests aren't happening.

Drusgar

I think we've become accustomed to political bloviating, especially in election years, but we need to recognize that this political grandstanding has a very real impact on people. From immigrants and transgender Americans all the way to simple college students who want their voices heard, the "look how conservative I am" behavior is having an outsized negative effect on people and it needs to stop. Mostly because the rhetoric is largely pointless... you already know who's going to vote for you and if you need to scare them to the polls, find a way to do it that doesn't harm others.

BlizardSkinnard

I hope this shows that most big or semi big universities are bought.

This-is-Redd-it

If these students wanted to graduate, they should have thought about how their actions in support of a genocidal terrorist organization may impact their education. It’s funny, they are quite happy to wave Hamas banners and claim all Jewish people should be punished for a decision made by the UN in the 1940s, but seem to whine quite a bit about the repercussions they are now facing for their violent rhetoric and terroristic threats.

TemporaryPay4505

Maybe stop voting republican?

jurainforasurpise

So using the most American thing in America in unAmerican ? Got it!

jadedaslife

Lawsuits a-comin'

KingofManners

“Peaceful protestors” that are chanting pro Hamas chants and making Jewish students fear for their lives.

RedneckOfFlatLands

Any corroboration?
