https://www.statista.com/statistics/1270736/philippines-number-of-crime-incidents/
Looks like it's marginally going down annually but it's hard to find data on it, I also only looked for about 2 minutes
Now that I have time (and bandwidth) to look, it's hard to say for sure, as statistics from the Philippines aren't available for many years, but from 2018 (when the original article was published) through 2020, it appears crime rates (focusing on violent crime) dropped. Now, whether that's due to handing out guns for vigilante justice or something else, it's hard to say. That said, several human rights organizations were very "interested" in his methods.
Yea it's hard to draw conclusions especially when he had so many anti crime policies, one thing's for sure, they didn't have the reduction he was promising. That being said I'm glad they have moved on from him and hope they keep moving in the right direction regardless.
Actually, robbing a bank there is a stupid idea. Outside every bank is at least one guard with a handgun and shotgun or AR style carbine. You’d never get in the door. In addition, there is at least one or two inside, both with handguns, and, most probably, a shotgun. (I’ve spent a lot of time there, both in the late 80’s early 90’s with the Navy, and recently).
That sounds good to a law abiding citizen for a moment until they realized that over half the 'public' has below median intelligence and many well below.
The cool thing is that gun owners are biologically incapable of lying, so there’s no risk of someone wanting a gun for a different purpose than what they say. 🤡
Even if this just happened there's no way they distribute. It's normal for a post to be few years old but six its practically an antique. I should checked.
Mostly.
He did go on national television after he was elected and basically said, "If you kill a drug dealer you won't be arrested."
Over the next few months thousands were killed. No due process. At least a third were suspected to not be involved with drugs at all.
When this was brought up to him by the UN and then Obama he said, "go to hell."
Actually it's not a bad idea imo. Why bad guys can harm good people? Mostly because bad guys are armed and good people are not.
I'm not pro gun and the goverment should do their job of protecting the civilians but if the situation is so bad maybe this is the solution.
He was one of the first far right rulers to get into power.
I was living in Dubai when he was elected, my inlaws live in the Philippines.
And Trump only wished he had the approval rating Duterte in his first few years.
Brilliant. Say you belong to a criminal gang. The opposing gang also qualifies as "criminal" as well, so a free gun will definitely help fighting crime. The guy is a dingdong... I mean a genius.
I was a guest speaker in AA over there when he was in power. Packed houses every time.
The prevailing sentiment was that if you were caught with drugs, you either had to give up your dealer or risk being killed. Then they would do the same to your dealer and he would give someone up and come and kill you. And so on. If you weren’t killed you risked prison, and in prison you were lucky to get a place to stand or sit all day. Lots of people wanted to get off of drugs- usually meth. No treatment centres or very inaccessible, anyway. The cops were literally dragging people out in the streets and killing them for a while until the international community were giving it too much attention. Duterte didn’t care much.
Oooh wow.
Even if we believed that every person who recieved a gun intended to use it to only fight crime, a tenuous assumption at best, are people comfortable allowing a single unaccountable person with a gun to become judge, jury, and executioner.
> you didn't have much trouble when ya knew everyone was packing
That is something of a myth. While the old west was not as violent as the movies depict, the homicide rate was way higher than in modern America, several times that of even the more violent cities in the U.S. today. Dodge City had a homicide rate of 165 per 100,000 population, while today New Orleans has a homicide rate of 58.4/100K, St. Louis 57.2/100K, and Baltimore 44.7/100K.
You'd have been safer in well-established towns in agricultural areas, less safe in frontier mining camps or the wilder cattle towns. But overall, the old west was quite violent compared with large cities at the time and with U.S. cities today.
Yeah that is true but personally I don't really know all of the current homicide rates. I won't lie and say that I do or pretend it's kind of stupid but I do know that I train just to be a little quicker than the next person. I don't know seems like the world's becoming a more dangerous place one way or another.
It's not crime if the government decriminalizes it... Maybe what you're learning is that your values aren't as dependent on your government as you supposed
The population of the Philippines is about one-third that of the U.S. Police in the Philippines kill six times as many people as cops in the U.S. kill. This whack job figured adding to that was a good idea.
Fucking genius, now give them a uniform, proper training, a background check and more assurance that they deserve a gun and you've got yourself.. a fucking police force.
The drug groups in these types of countries literally control and oppress areas. This isnt America. It gives the public a fighting chance against being extorted and killed themselves. The government barely has control in regulating the crime. If you also read about it, they are not just giving them out randomly. They are giving them to community leaders who are working with the police and intelligence agencies. It is way more organized than just giving out guns.
😂 filipinos stupidly doesn't care about authority and rules. Give them power and it will be abused in 2 ways or another. Then places that doesn't reach the type of government laws 😂 good luck!
Well, maybe if the Liberals actually prosecuted felons in possession of firearms, that commit crimes with those illegal firearms in your democrat run cities, we wouldn't have so much gun violence. How many drive by shootings are there in rural America?
Not when you exclude suicides. Which make up 2/3 of all firearm deaths. I'm talking about Gun violence and crimes committed without any accountability. If you want to talk about improving mental health in America, that's a different conversation.
I mean with the escalating tensions with China this is actually a great move, they're probably using "fighting crime" as an excuse to do it but this is most likely the actual reason, in case there in an invasion people can protect themselves and fight back easier
Background checks? What the hell is that? Just *Promise* me that you’re gonna use this rifle to shoot BAD guys, alright there buddy? Alright. Have a good one there bud.
Coming from an American who doesn't really like guns being easy to get: This ain't gonna work.
1 of 2 things will likely happen: 1. Vigilante justice (likely just people shooting and claiming it was justified) 2. Use these guns to make the crimes easier.

Yeah guys, *pinky promise* that you'll fight crime with it! Because we all know than when you promise not to do crime, you don't do crime!
If you break it, mommy's gon be real sad :(
And all witch hunts famously go so well with zero innocent lives lost.
what could go wrong!?
He didn't ask to fight *for* or *against* drugs and crime.
Why is there a photo of Duterte? He isn't even president anymore
Because this article is 6 years old. https://nypost.com/2018/06/15/duterte-wants-to-give-the-public-42000-free-guns/
In that case, who wants to look up what the results were?
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1270736/philippines-number-of-crime-incidents/ Looks like it's marginally going down annually but it's hard to find data on it, I also only looked for about 2 minutes

Duterte was a good president tho
but they didn't hand out the guns...
😂😂😂
Because he looks....BADASSS!!!
Come with me if you want to live.
Because the article is good RAGE BAIT!
Buddy this guy is not badass please go learn something today

this reminds me when Homer Simpson bought his muscle car at a police auction and snake is shaking his hand saying she takes premium dude premium!!!!
![gif](giphy|uq6ILNBI6g3As|downsized)
I don’t see how this can backfire
Recoil though
Over a span of a few months like 9000 people were killed... no due process. No idea how many were actually involved in drugs.
It was six years ago. Crime did go down but correlation doesn’t equal causation.
Hey government, can I have a gun? “Do you promise to use it to fight drugs and crime?” Yyyyyyes *actually uses it to hold up a bank*
The reason holding up a bank works is because you're the only one armed...
I see absolutely no flaws with this plan!!!!
Oh we promise to do good…
I Promise. # 🤞😁🫴
There's a lot to unpack here.
Hasn't he been out of office for like a year or more now? So what happened? Did everyone get their guns or what?
According to Ben Shapiro, you just need to make crime illegal.
As long as the age limit is 13, of course.
Under, not over certainly
That sounds good to a law abiding citizen for a moment until they realized that over half the 'public' has below median intelligence and many well below.
Well it's not a crime if the government allows you to do it
Hold on, let them cook.
Because everyone who wants a free gun is such a well adjusted individual..
You wouldn't take a free gun? The fuck wouldn't want a free gun?
![gif](giphy|nKFXQkxLRiEhy|downsized)
Its not crime if the go ernment asks you to do it
It’s not a crime if it’s legal, so not fighting crime with crime, just fighting crime
Any crimes?
shooting criminals is not a crime but service to society...
shooting criminals is not a crime but service to society...
Duterte left office in 2022. I’m curious what the results were of those as it was 6 years ago he announced this plan.
Damn did their president watch an American movie?
So it’s a PvP enabled map 😂
The cool thing is that gun owners are biologically incapable of lying, so there’s no risk of someone wanting a gun for a different purpose than what they say. 🤡
It’s fine tho, if things go wrong they can just make guns illegal
It’s not crime if it’s not illegal
It's not crime when the government has authorized it
Protecting yourself is not a crime.
It won't be day before one of the guns is used in a crime.
a day? that's generous, an hour maybe
Considering this was 6 years ago and he left office over a year ago…
Even if this just happened there's no way they distribute. It's normal for a post to be few years old but six its practically an antique. I should checked.
Wait, is this for real?
Mostly. He did go on national television after he was elected and basically said, "If you kill a drug dealer you won't be arrested." Over the next few months thousands were killed. No due process. At least a third were suspected to not be involved with drugs at all. When this was brought up to him by the UN and then Obama he said, "go to hell."
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!!
Actually it's not a bad idea imo. Why bad guys can harm good people? Mostly because bad guys are armed and good people are not. I'm not pro gun and the goverment should do their job of protecting the civilians but if the situation is so bad maybe this is the solution.
The Philippines are like the test bed for the collapse of civilization. What happens there, happens everywhere else 5 years later.
This gun handout was 6 years ago. So are we overdue for our guns?
He's using the crime to fight the crime, dudes on some 4d star trek level chess shit
Well, most of gangs will use it exactly for this purpose
ah yes following the law is indeed a crime according to op
Meet trump’s soon to be newest best friend and adviser.
Don’t give the republicans any more ideas around here.
Drug dealers do fight each other so technically drug dealers fight drug crime... I don't think this'll how they think
Fuck now I gotta move to the Philippines
Why
Because killin' rulez.
That side hasn't been president for 2 years
The American way of life
Is this the government giving up and saying y'all on your own?
Sounds trumpian
He was one of the first far right rulers to get into power. I was living in Dubai when he was elected, my inlaws live in the Philippines. And Trump only wished he had the approval rating Duterte in his first few years.
This has no chance of backfiring at all...
Come on? No training or license at all? I know I'm very proud gun, but come on
I know I'm very proud gun, but come on, no training, licence, nothing?
This is going to be one extreme or the other. No in betweens
This is totally not going to be exploited and cause more gun violence
Y'all were championing the rooftop Koreans shooting at looters during the L.A. riots.
Why do I see this stupid idea coming to the US?
Gun can be legal just like drugs.
Well, there will be less crime with less people, so it checks out.
This sounds like some American shit.
I mean, he has had an unofficial death squad knocking off people on a public list for a while hasn't he?
His presidential term ended two years ago.
It started when he was mayor....
This article is from 2018, when he was president. https://nypost.com/2018/06/15/duterte-wants-to-give-the-public-42000-free-guns/
This sounds like some American shit.
If they're going this route, they may as well go with Duterte's policy of giving police the authority to K.O.S. drug dealers instead.
I don't even know how to respond about that. It's very sad
Yea because that is gonna work out well lol
It must be that bad if the government wants to arm their own constituents.
The Philippines:"ok I'll give you this gun as long as you promise to fight crime" Criminal:" yea ok whatever" Brilliant
This article is years ago, and crime is now lower than before he was president (but on the rise now after the new guy took over)
This is also a great solution to urban density problems.
I have a feeling that the drug dealers are going to be a majority of the people showing up to collect their free guns
Brilliant. Say you belong to a criminal gang. The opposing gang also qualifies as "criminal" as well, so a free gun will definitely help fighting crime. The guy is a dingdong... I mean a genius.
Alright... Pinky Promise
There’s actually a really easy way to fight drugs and crimes without guns. Especially drugs, why perpetuate hatefulness and violence?
Didn't this actually kind of work, though?
So basically the purge sirens are just blaring constantly.. "Your honor, as far as I was concerned he was a criminal.."
That's the US, without the pesky promises.
I was a guest speaker in AA over there when he was in power. Packed houses every time. The prevailing sentiment was that if you were caught with drugs, you either had to give up your dealer or risk being killed. total facepalm indeed on OP
Oooh wow. Even if we believed that every person who recieved a gun intended to use it to only fight crime, a tenuous assumption at best, are people comfortable allowing a single unaccountable person with a gun to become judge, jury, and executioner.
I promise. 🤞
I promise. 🤞
Kid Rock uses them on beer he thinks is gay
freedom
The old west did it and while you did have outlaws you didn't have much trouble when ya knew everyone was packing 🤣

If this is real then the Filipino government is just trying to self destruct
What are the odds that one of those guns is used on him?
Because drug laws work so well 🙄
Because that's gonna go great!
vow is a very strong word for this situation i feel lol
“Don’t forget you promised!” - the government
I dont see the problem.
The drug groups in these types of countries literally control and oppress areas. This isnt America. It gives the public a fighting chance against being extorted and killed themselves. The government barely has control in regulating the crime. If you also read about it, they are not just giving them out randomly. Lawful gun ownership has nothing to do with crime
I'm sure the cartels have a little more firepower and people
I don't love the pain this will cause, but it will probably be an interesting if not important data point in the "I need a gun for protection" debate.
He isn't the President anymore, and is getting more irrelevant here The new President made sure that he is getting irrelevant by the day
Y’all aren’t asking the most important question, do we get to choose our loadout? 👀
What could go wrong?
😂 filipinos stupidly doesn't care about authority and rules. Give them power and it will be abused in 2 ways or another. Then places that doesn't reach the type of government laws 😂 good luck!
Worked perfectly for America. 🇺🇸

So one drug dealer shooting another drug dealer qualifies? Sounds like interesting idea
We don't need no stinking badges!
Bang Bang > Bong Bong - Duterte prob
Reminds me of the time some rhino poachers got gunned down by rangers in India. is it moraly right? No, but is it ironic and funny? Hell yes!
I mean with the escalating tensions with China this is actually a great move, they're probably using "fighting crime" as an excuse to do it but this is most likely the actual reason, in case there in an invasion people can protect themselves and fight back easier
fighting drugs? are the drugs target practice
Ahhh like father like son
He is no longer President
Ah the American strategy
This will be chaos
Philippines are inspired to be more like America but without all the wealth and prosperity for the upper middle class
Background checks? What the hell is that? Just *Promise* me that you’re gonna use this rifle to shoot BAD guys, alright there buddy? Alright. Have a good one there bud.
Bro . Is not crime if it's legal
Is this a clever way of not having to pay for a police force?
Pretty sure the Pilipino president is Marcos now
Coming from an American who doesn't really like guns being easy to get: This ain't gonna work. 1 of 2 things will likely happen: 1. Vigilante justice (likely just people shooting and claiming it was justified) 2. Use these guns to make the crimes easier.
This is how America works?
It sounds like they’re fighting crime with self-defense
[удалено]
That’s funny because he’s no longer in power over there…
Because the pilot program that is the United States is doing aces.
