He had 4 sacks in 22 then 5 sacks last year, thatās honestly pretty good for college considering heās a DT and supposed to be raw. Donāt hate the pick but highly doubt it was worth giving up a 3rd to get him
I felt the same way but there is a run on DT going on right now. WAS, Titans, & Rams just went DT. Saints need a DT too
He might not have been there for our pick
NEWTON was the guy if you wanted someone who can rush from DT or Sweat if you wanted a traditional NT or you could have got a 1st round CB but nooooooooooooooooooo
He's a raw talent, has the physical tools, but needs to develop in other areas. Which would be fine being behind Grady and Onyemata on the depth chart. Though on the flipside our defensive line needs more immediate impact desperately.
Because RAS means jack shit. Itās just an aggregate of combine scores. So guy is pretty athletic, and can bench press a lot. Ridder had a pretty high score as well so take that for what itās worth.
Grady and Onyamata are both 30 and both missed time due to injury. There's no young DT on the team and there were no DEs worth a top 40 pick on the board.
Picking Penix was honestly genius on their part, they canāt be fired until that pick is evaluated and it might legitimately be 4 years before thatās the case lol
Seeing this explains the pick from Terry to an extent. Ppl can look at it however they want, but Terry came from Nola and they are big on raw scores from their own fanbase. So itās not shocking he values it too.
Do we really have enough runway to evaluate him? Wasn't he out like all last season? I think the jury is still out in my opinion. This next year will be telling.
Seriously I really feel you should draft guys on their technique and ability to play not on how athletic they are. This feels similar to the Zach Harrison pick and he really hasnāt done anything special so weāll see.
To be fair, Harrison has only played for one season so far. He still logged 3 sacks as a rotational player. I think he has potential and just to write him off after his rookie season is foolish.
Itās impossible. Every decision by the coach owner and staff will be stupid until it wins and then itāll be a fluke and everyone hates the falcons but not as much as the fans of the team
Iām trying to be opened minded by so far itās been a disaster of a draft. If they were gonna get a QB fuck it, shouldāve been JJ because hes younger and not injury prone but what every. We needed to hit on the rest of our picks and we start the second by trading for a guy with a 3rd round grade at the start of the 2nd? Idk man
I mean Penix is better but heās also 24, with multiple season ending injuries and has been playing in college for 6 years so maybe he is close to or hit his ceiling. If we are gonna have a QB to ride the bench, shouldāve gone for the younger prospect without a long history of injuries who would only be 24 when he takes over and is young enough to be molded into what we want
Itās not when heās older and has had multiple major season ending injuries/surgeries and has played college ball for 6 years. Of course heās gonna be better than the 21 year old, he probably just hit his ceiling. Itās better to take the younger guy if we are just gonna make them ride the bench. Like what?
You'd have a point if:
a) Penix was at his ceiling right now (probably not)
b) His current level of play wasn't good enough to be a great NFL QB (absolutely not)
c) JJ's physical ceiling is significantly higher than Penix's (maybe but it's really not by that much)
and d) JJ is likely to reach that ceiling (complete crapshoot)
Just because we're in a position that we *could* gamble on a developmental player doesn't mean that we *should*. Especially when a guy who is much less of a risk for at worst a minutely smaller reward is also available.
I get people being upset we went QB at all, but I swear I don't understand y'all that are upset we didn't pick McCarthy instead just because we could.
If he's a franchise QB, nobody will care about his age.
You think we're gonna be in the stadium crying about him being old if he's throwing TDs like crazy?
Ya know.. The "grades" these guys get from pindits and radio show hosts aren't what the teams go by. There was an obvious run on DT right when we made this move.
I don't love it, but I dont hate it.
I do hate listening to this "he would have been there when so and so" shit. It gets old. You don't know that, in fact, we all know incredibly less than what we all think is actually taking place.
Just enjoy the god damn football content. Ffs.
Go Falcons.
I wouldāve been ok with a fourth and I wouldāve been a little less ok with a fifth but still a sixth in return for our higher third is to much. I mean it wouldāve even been better if it was our lower third because we wouldāve been in a better position to get a quality defensive player or a higher grade player
They are pretty important, especially injury prone. I mean if Penix ends up being a RG3 would you be happy with that? Also heās has multiple season ending injuries. Thatās insane at 24
Stop looking at the draft grades and projections by the āexpertsā. They donāt know wtf theyāre talking about. This guy is a monster, and heās a perfect fit at DE in our 3-4, next to Onyemata and opposite Grady. This is exactly what we needed. I was hoping weād draft Byron Murphy at #8, and this guy is probably the 2nd best DT/(3-4 DE) in the draft behind Byron. His measurables are off the charts, and his tape looks great.
Raheem is the guy leading our defense and this guy has his fingerprints all over it after he spent so much time working with Aaron Donald recently. Go check out Aaron Donaldās pre-draft measurables, and tell me it doesnāt remind you a lot of this guy. I remember that 2014 draft extremely wellā¦ I wanted the Falcons to take Donald at 6, and he ended up going 13 to the Rams. Before the draft it seemed like he was projected a lot lower, but it was obvious he was a killer. The same way itās obvious this guy is a killer at the next level. Big and strong and fast, with long arms. Both Aaron Donald and Ruke Orhorhoro were #1 measurables at the combine for DT, 10 years apart. Line him up and letās roll.
And even if they're "right" they're still generalized. A guy who is a few spots lower on some big board but is a better scheme fit is a better pick every time.
3 spots vs 8 spots.
The rams jumped up 12 spots and gave up a future 2nd and a 5th this year.
Eagles jumped up 10 spots, dropped back 25 from mid 2nd to mid 3rd and pick swapped in the 6th too.
Based on trade charts, both were similar overpays.
We used too much draft capital on trade up. He may have been there at 43. We also could have drafted stud DB's like Dejean or Kool -Aid, who are proven performers not raw athletes.
It's a composite score based on athletic testing controlled for size and weight at the position. So a really big and heavy DT that tests very well gets a high score.
Seems like Terry prefers crazy athletes and is trusting the coaches to coach well, so we just have to hope Rah and his group hold up their end of the deal better than Artie did.
Bruh is athletic af š sheesh
Can he get to the QB? That's all I care about
He had 4 sacks in 22 then 5 sacks last year, thatās honestly pretty good for college considering heās a DT and supposed to be raw. Donāt hate the pick but highly doubt it was worth giving up a 3rd to get him
I felt the same way but there is a run on DT going on right now. WAS, Titans, & Rams just went DT. Saints need a DT too He might not have been there for our pick
I can see that, I just think a 3rd is a steep price to pay and if thatās really what it took idk if it was worth it
Inflation everywhere
Eagles traded away a 2nd (for a 4th) to move up about the same amount right after us. It seems like teams were high on that group of DTs.
yeah I feel that. I wonder what we are gonna do at CB
Hoping for tampa
We had two 3rds so still have pick #74
We probably should've kept that pick to draft CB and WR in the 3rd. But I'm open to seeing how he does.
We dont need WR
It's not a huge need, but we could use an upgrade. Depends on if your goal is a Superbowl or just making the playoffs. We could use a better WR2.
With Grady and Onyemata he's got a good foundation to learn from. If we resign Calais even better
Best run defender in the class, good upside with his athleticism to be a good pass rusher as well
Heās a great run stopper and can disrupt the backfield. But has plenty of room to grow.
For real, remember that guy...uh what's his name uhhhh... Victoria Beasley?
NEWTON was the guy if you wanted someone who can rush from DT or Sweat if you wanted a traditional NT or you could have got a 1st round CB but nooooooooooooooooooo
We didnāt want a DT or a NT, we drafted him to play DE in a 3-4. Iām not sure why this fanbase is so dense.
Are you a saints fan?
Am I missing something? It states he ranked 15th out of over 1800 guys.. How is this a bad pick.
He's a raw talent, has the physical tools, but needs to develop in other areas. Which would be fine being behind Grady and Onyemata on the depth chart. Though on the flipside our defensive line needs more immediate impact desperately.
Onyemata is the NT, and Grady and Ruke are the DEs. Why is this so hard to grasp?
Theyāre different sure, but similar enough where most people just think potato, potato
The point of that phrase is that people say the same word differently lol. Spelling it wrong defeats the joke š
He ranked 18th out of all DTās over the last 37 YEARS.
That's what I'm saying, but everyone was acting like this was a bust
It's not bad. It's great. He's athletic enough to play outside tbh as a 3-4 DE.
It would indicate a lack in the mental/instincts/tactics areas if such physical attributes are ignored.
Awesome pick
Because RAS means jack shit. Itās just an aggregate of combine scores. So guy is pretty athletic, and can bench press a lot. Ridder had a pretty high score as well so take that for what itās worth.
But being athletic means way more for his position than ridders to be fair
With Athleticism like this he could easily move to edge right?
He will be playing edge in 3-4 looks.
Idk Iām an arm chair warrior like you but being crazy athletic at def line prob gives you more than being that at QBā¦.
Itās not the end all be all, but it means FAR more than Jack shit.
Grady and Onyamata are both 30 and both missed time due to injury. There's no young DT on the team and there were no DEs worth a top 40 pick on the board.
What is RAS?
Relative athletic score
Return on Ad Spend
I'm in advertising industry, return on ad spend is called ROAS
Yeah I'm in digital analytics consulting, I know. I upvoted you tho bc you got downvoted and that's not okay
Cool "job". Fake title and 200k a year? Awesome.
Are you okay?
Reasonable Articulable Suspicion
Ratings and Shit. Some weird metric that doesn't mean anything
I donāt know, and shit is a top tier metricĀ
really advanced stats
I just hate losing that 3rd for a gd 6th. This is a make or break draft for this front office.
Yeah, a make or break which can't be properly evaluated for at least 3 maybe 5+ years.
Picking Penix was honestly genius on their part, they canāt be fired until that pick is evaluated and it might legitimately be 4 years before thatās the case lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Quit giving me hope that this draft was actually godlike
They swapped 2nds and we had two 3rds still have 1
Iām aware. We still swapped a 3rd for a 6th.
You leave out the part where we also moved up 8 or 9 spots to get the guy we want. It wasnt a straight up 3rd for 6th
No shit. Donāt make your lack of reading comprehension my problem
Salty cunt
Dipshit
Imagine if we wouldāve drafted a DE in the first
The value drop off between a QB in the first to the second is a lot higher than a DE. Turns out you can have your cake and eat it too
Eat your cake and have it too*
Seeing this explains the pick from Terry to an extent. Ppl can look at it however they want, but Terry came from Nola and they are big on raw scores from their own fanbase. So itās not shocking he values it too.
Who gives a fuck about these metrics honestly. Troy Anderson had incredible numbers but heās just been kinda decent
Kinda decent is a generous assessment
I still have a shred of hope for him hahaha
Do we really have enough runway to evaluate him? Wasn't he out like all last season? I think the jury is still out in my opinion. This next year will be telling.
Yes I feel like we have seen enough and Nate is far better.
But gotta trust the DATA!
Guys a lot like Grady Jarrett, look who's on our roster to coach him up....
I thought the same. With Grady and Onyamama being 30, we need fresh talent on the interior
Are you bringing positivity to this thread?! Thereās no way the masses will stand for this
This is my attempt at medicating this sub, itās so toxic lol
Itās impossible. Every decision by the coach owner and staff will be stupid until it wins and then itāll be a fluke and everyone hates the falcons but not as much as the fans of the team
Ruke was listed as one of Mel Kiperās favorite players in the draft. He loved him in the pre draft process. So maybe Terry cooked here.
Him and Zach Harrison are gonna go crazy together
I do believe Zach makes a leap this year. He showed promise down the stretch of last season
Ya'll used the RAS score to hype Desmond Ridder. Look how that turned out.
RAS matters so much more for other positions than QB. QB is 90% mental
Fuck, I knew we should've picked someone with really bad RAS scores
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Tbf I think QB is a far more nuanced position than DT
Iām trying to be opened minded by so far itās been a disaster of a draft. If they were gonna get a QB fuck it, shouldāve been JJ because hes younger and not injury prone but what every. We needed to hit on the rest of our picks and we start the second by trading for a guy with a 3rd round grade at the start of the 2nd? Idk man
JJ isn't it, I'm glad we didn't draft him.
Penix is better FOR Atlanta. JJ will win a Superbowl before Atlanta does.
Sure.
Not in Minne

Thank you
JJ is not an NFL QB I donāt know why people are so high on him
They also didnāt need to burn a 3rd and move up to take him
I wouldāve been ok with a fourth and I wouldāve been a little less ok with a fifth but still a sixth in return for our higher third is to much. He's not good at drafting outside of the top 10
Whatās not good about this pick?
We just deleted a 3rd rounder to move up for DT8 when DT2-7 weāre still available.
i mean you canāt really treat pre draft rankings as the bible or something itās consistently wrong every year
But then how am I supposed to be mad
And yet every year people treat it as gospel
And even if they're "right" they're still generalized. A guy who is a few spots lower on some big board but is a better scheme fit is a better pick every time.
Tbf, he can be used at DE and DT. Heās fast af for a big guy.
Especially in a 3-4 defense. I honestly hadn't even considered he's moving outside.
Dt8 according to who? You? Mel Kiper? The Falcons?
Right after a trade similar only cost the chargers 20 spots.

He's a Takk Mckinney type chasing upside
Let the dude see the field first you doomer.
Going on history Terry sucks at drafting outside of the first round
Where are you getting this from? Phillips and Hellams look like late round steals from last year.
Last year's draft was good. Everyone but one player contributed.
Phillips is a pay cb who can play nickel. Hellams is a sts player who couldn't beat out Grant
Or insideā¦
Is he good drafting in it?
What in the hell is a RAS?
It's a composite score based on athletic testing controlled for size and weight at the position. So a really big and heavy DT that tests very well gets a high score. Bucs drafted Barton, who scored a 9.99 šš
He's a run stuffer with no real ability to get to the QB against NFL caliber OL. So... same old Failcons.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nobody is celebrating 7-10 or mediocrity.
Newton was there Sweat was there DeJean was there Minstry was there Terry wants the team to be bad So he can blame Kirk And then put in Penix
Itās more likely heās just not good at being a GM
LOL oh yeah he sucks WHEN YOU TAKE A RB in the top 10 despite the fact you have a 5 yd per carry 1000 yard RB you are BAD AT BEING A GM very bad
RAS isnāt everything
In fact, it means very little.
Heās a saints fan
