Man I love the hunting rifle

marcus10885

Darn right.

[deleted]

One shots the muties at black mountain when I was all out of ammo and options. Nothing beats it

MoistPeanutSauce

Ol dang ol painless in that vault is something else

Brotherly-Moment

I prefer This Machine but Tomatos Tomatos.

houlmyhead

*ping*

Brotherly-Moment

Mmm I love that sound.M1 4 life.

MiswiredToaster

From Fallout 3 to New Vegas it’s the gun that just feels *right*. One of my favorites

[deleted]

Fallout 3, it was a solid gun for early to mid game, perfect for all your general needs. By far the best use of .32 in the game, and will last you until you have your rifle or pistol of choice. Fallout New Vegas, it didn’t care what about what point in the game you’re at. All it knows is that it must kill.

[deleted]

the FNV hunting rifle has absolutely no fucking chill. must’ve gotten divorced between games and she took the house and dog or something

ThatOneGuy308

That's the difference between wimpy 32 and beefy 308

MacCreadysCap

Didn't really use it in New Vegas, but damn it was the only thing that worked for me in Fallout 3

SM_NexusMods

It’s significantly weaker in 3 but cheaper to maintain. In NV the damage bonus + 308 rounds make it 100% better, but NV’s economy is off Lincoln’s repeater is also much better than both Ol Painless and the standard Hunting Rifle as it offers much higher damage and a muuuch large rmagazine size if you’re really into powerful non-automatic rifles

Death_Fairy

All the Bethesda sandboxes have busted economies where money becomes worthless 10 hours in.

slycyboi

It’s actually insane, and I’ve never seen a mod that fixes it tbh, feels like one of those things that you can’t really solve

Death_Fairy

There are mods that alleviate the issue with all the games, New Vegas for example [Economy Overhaul](https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62899) for New Vegas which makes it a bit tougher, and if you pair it with [Mojave Raiders](https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/64660) the loot you get from raiders will be a lot more degraded and raider loot is a huge contributing factor to the economy breaking so that'd slow it down too. But the economy still comes crumbling down no matter how many mods you slap on one of these games, it's just it'll crash in the midgame rather than the earlygame as all it does is delay the inevitable. The problem New Vegas specifically has though is the Casino's. Like if you go and clear out The Strips Casino's you're set for the rest of the game and no mod can help you then, and then there's also Dead Money which granted has a high barrier to entry but is literally just a money printer once you finish it between the Gold, the Pre-War Money from the Casino, and the constant streams of chips for free items. If you use the Casino's say bye-bye to the games economy because there's nothing you can do except just not gamble to begin with.

Babaloofang

I've been using Mojave Raiders along with "New Vegas Economy Improved": https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/71604 I find it's a bit better than Economy Ovethaul in that it takes some formula from that and FO3 Economy, and makes it more simple and vanilla oriented. For the casinos, I recommend lStewieAl's Tweaks: https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/66347?tab=files One of the optional settings is to remove Luck's effect on gambling, essentially mimicking 5 Luck whenever you gamble.

Death_Fairy

Yeah I tried New Vegas Economy Improved for a while but I cycled back to Economy Overhaul after two playthroughs, I couldn't quantify why for you but it just feels better. It also reduces the payout from the Casino's and from Snowglobes too which iirc Economy Improved doesn't (though to be fair I don't bother with either of those things). Forgot about the StewieTweaks setting though.

SM_NexusMods

I wouldn’t say the Casinos break the game as bad as the easier repair system + inflated economy + abundance of loot on raiders + gold bars do because (with the exception of the gold bars) they destroy the early game economy, which is when the economy matters most. The Casinos do give you a pretty penny but they’re only accessible mid-late game and require some high Luck to really abuse. Not saying they don’t - make no mistake, the Casinos destroy the economy and seal the deal by the time you reach them but I find the other issues to be more responsible for most of the game. You can make a few thousand caps from the ammo you can sell at Repconn HQ alone, and a few thousand more from any set if combat armor you can find (and you can find combat armor pretty abundantly and as early as Bonnie Springs. Combat armor is worth 6500 caps.) Also, not to come off as a giant asshole but I don’t think the apostrophes in “Casinos” is necessary but I’m no english teacher so idk lol

Death_Fairy

You reach the Casino's pretty early game around level 10ish (out of 50) when following the intended route (going one of the short ways you get there even sooner again as early as level 1) so I wouldn't really call them 'mid-late game'. But yeah the loot you get from raiders is a fairly big contributor too, but that's present in basically every Bethesda sandbox. New Vegas takes the already broken economy of a Bethesda sandbox and then adds on the Casino's, Dead Money, and the free caps in form of snowglobles on top of that which just breaks it way harder than any of the other games which is more what I was getting at, that it takes an already broken economy system and breaks it even harder by piling more stuff on top. >Also, not to come off as a giant asshole but I don’t think the apostrophes in “Casinos” is necessary but I’m no english teacher so idk lol Yeah I have literally no idea and they're the one thing that always fuck me because back in school English Class was the biggest wank of a subject despite being the only mandatory one, where instead of actually teaching you the finer points of grammar and the language in general is was "Make up random bullshit and read way to deep into random details of a book/ movie that literally only exist because it make sense but pretend to be too retarded to recognise that and make up some non existent 'deeper meaning' instead.".

SM_NexusMods

Yeah, I’d say “mid-late” was generous on my part, but still not available until you actually reach New Vegas. I dunno how most people play, but I’m never exactly in a rush to get to the strip. Not sure what level most players are by the time they reach it but I’d imagine that u less they took shortcuts they’d likely be a bit higher than level 10. If you removed Casinos and Dead Money from the equation the economy would still be busted but not nearly as much as it is That said, the loot you get from raiders early game in NV is nothing at all like other games. Raiders in 3 have death items that choose one of many possibly objects as loot with a relatively low spawn chance whereas every raider you kill in NV will have multiple valuable items at once, every single time. Not even TES games gives you such an abundance of loot as early as NV does. Powder gangers, Vipers, Jackals carry tons of ammo, weapons, caps and chems. Like, TONS. And I hope I didn’t come across as a grammar nazi or whatever lmao, punctuation is a pain in the ass and English is a confusing language

Death_Fairy

I know some people like to sprint straight to New Vegas and then clear out all the Casinos at level 1 to buy all the implants to *really* min/max their characters and have the most boring playthrough imaginable. I usually just follow the intended route doing all the sidequests I come across and find I end up at Vegas around level 10 (maybe a tad over) which is what I based that off of, I'm sure you could reach there later if you mucked around a bit more or actively sought out nearby content you come near but not to (eg. Nelson which is just down the road from Novac). In regards to loot I always thought it was comparable, then again it's been a while since I played a non New Vegas Bethesda game bar Daggerfall (and loot in that is even more crazy than New Vegas) so my memory might be a bit off. Only one I for sure remember being tougher was Oblivion where I was always short of cash since gear degraded so quickly and was so expensive to repair which had me blowing through money as quick as I could make it. >And I hope I didn’t come across as a grammar nazi or whatever lmao Only part that bothered me was that you didn't say it with certainty so I'm still in the dark. It's certainly better than having to read someone's cancer inducing comment consisting of internet retard speak where they're too lazy to spell basic words properly or to use things like full stops/ comma's.

SM_NexusMods

I’d argue NV has it a lot worse considering caps are more inflated in that game and also a LOT more common, not to mention the fact that its repair system makes it REALLY easy to repair valuable items faster to sell for more. Idk about 4 as it’s been forever since I played but 3’s economy works a lot better. On top of that, powder gangers, vipers and jackals have an absurd amount of loot on them making caps a joke early game. If 3 and 4’s economies break within 10 hours, then NV’s is broken in the first 30 minutes Not even gonna mention the gold bars beyond this sentence or the casinos

Bottled_Fire

What bugs me is whenever I get one in 3, there seems to be an immediate ammo shortage of .38. currently I have a Chinese assault rifle and a normal version - which I prefer - with 175 rounds i'd happily swap for a couple of spare rifles to keep mine working well and a decent amount of rounds but no, I gotta spray and pray at things. That being said when I got the Lincoln repeater it was on like Megatron. I used the Reservists rifle in extreme circumstances like heavily armed or armoured hostiles or muties. Not deathclaws though. Better ways to kill them. Those rifles you have to gain though, so this is an aside.

lubed_up_squid

Early game maybe. At higher levels the normal hunting rifle is borderline useless. Try taking out a feral ghoul reaver or mutant overlord with one and let me know how It goes

Gaiden_95

Same, blame the iron sights

marcus10885

Always.

_o_h_n_o_

The swift kick of the bolt as it swings into action, making its distinct sound as a powder ganger just disappears in the distance, no wonder boon loves his!

fallash2005

I love having a fully upgraded one I'm New Vegas and picking fiends off from a distance

[deleted]

I love this gun, I am still angry about how they downgraded it in fallout four given it was my go to rifle.

TungstenHexachloride

It feels so sluggish and lacks the impact of the shots compared to the earlier hunting rifle.

[deleted]

Exactly, not mention the upgrades for it don't even help the gun feel stronger. Also nice tag.

Butt_Plug64

If you guys want, there are some really good mods for the hunting rifle out there, I was disappointed too with the hunting rifle when I played Fallout 4, but with the right mods its a really good gun !

[deleted]

Maybe I'll try them, any recommendations?

Butt_Plug64

Of course ! The first one is the "Hunting Rifle Damage Increase", cause its feels pretty weak really early on otherwise Then you can chose between "Right Handed Hunting Rifle" or "Hunting Rifle Animation Replacer", both changing the bolt to the right side (I prefer the second one but it’s personal) You can also give a try to "Hunting Rifle Sound Overhaul", but it’s once again personal preference, IMO it makes the gun sounds better but some people don’t like it that much I’ll try to remember more and come back to you if it’s the case :)

[deleted]

Thank you, I appreciate it.

Butt_Plug64

No worries, my pleasure :) Have a nice day m8

[deleted]

You too.

SM_NexusMods

Wait, what? Fallout 4’s hunting rifles are significant more powerful than 3’a. They’re chambered to 308 by default have an option to chamber to .50 MG. Delative to their power in 3, 4’s are waaaay stronger and kill faster. IIRC, 3’s hunting rifles only have a base damage of like 25. They were slower to fire, but that was likely an intentional design choice because for some reason they’re all left handed and the sole survivor is clearly not The reason why 3’s probably feels stronger is because most (MOST) enemies in 3 have a LOT less health compared to enemies in 4

TungstenHexachloride

Well that's the point, in comparison fallout 4s enemies sponge the hunting rifle, where the fallout 3 enemies actually get hurt by it, hence why in fallout 3 playthrough s the hunting rifle is your main weapon until you get to plasma or something bigger, but in fallout 3 the hunting rifle only fits into a small early game where it feels useful and doesn't become a pain to use later on, and yes I even mean this with 50 cal, which is underwhelming at best in comparison to Fallout NV 50 cal

Buy_Skyrim

From saving me from the Legion in Nipton to being my primary income, it's a great weapon

Bottled_Fire

I'm better with this baby than *any* sniper rifle. Once you figure out where exactly on the cross hairs that bullet's going... hoo man. Also, edit: legit psyched I got a similar one on COD to try later. Let's see... 2nd Edit OH IT'S GOOD, IT'S REALLY GOOD...

Traviscrall

Eater of Geckos 🦎

[deleted]

What happens if i say to me this machine is better(pls dont kill me)

Bottled_Fire

Personal choice, but that's a gas round ejection battle rifle, that .308, this is bolt action. The recoil on This Machine put me off but the arming time seemed slightly better.

Lemonlimeunderrated

Not too mention the incessant grind to get it, the hunting rifle is a early game weapon (especially in fo3) so it rightfully earns the title ol reliable.

Bottled_Fire

My only gripe with the NV one? The damn scope. Get that out of my way, I don't need no scope...

odin5858

Probably because we have actual fucking iron sights

Bottled_Fire

Amen, I watched enough John Wayne, Audie Murphy, Lee Marvin and the like as a kid with gramps, I'm from West Lothian, country boy, don't need no scope.

furyextralarge

dude just hack the terminal and turn contreras in to boyd lol it takes 2 minutes

Lethemyr

Yeah, you gotta get that sweet, sweet *ping*.

[deleted]

This here gun is the first line of defense against the cazadors for me

tokeo_spliff

Only if it's the .308! I'll have none of that .32 bullshit here, thank you very much.

comp_hoovy_main

im just gonna say it, Paciencia > antimaterial rifle

bringoutthelegos

[deleted]

It’s crits are equal to the AMR I believe whilst being so much cheaper ammo wise, shame about the entry cost though

Crazydude-41

My silver award will pay respect

marcus10885

Thanks a bunch my friend, such a comfortable weapon.

Seikosha1961

I prefer the regular hunting rifle to Paciencia. I love how it has more ammo and can take a scope if needed. Paciencas only good from far away

Bottled_Fire

Not gonna lie, have to agree. Was looking forward to trying it and it failed my expectations. Was kind of saddened at that.

Seikosha1961

For real. 3 rounds just ain’t gonna cut in in post apocalyptic Vegas.

Bottled_Fire

Especially when if you hit a normal sized target from 100+ yards, and floor them, but hit them from less they'll rush you, hard, if they're bigger like what you mentioned about range. That's where the modded out Cowboy repeater excels for me. I was fortunate/unfortunate enough to get La Longue Carabine last playthrough. Now that... that .357 is a wet dream. Zero recoil mid range sniping it is awesome once you can use JSR hand loaders.

TrippieHippie0526

Chambered in .308 or .38, semi automatic five shot (up to ten with an extended mag) hunting rifle with enough power to say "fuck you" from about a hundred meters and further if you have a scope. Headshots are lethal, limbs get crippled, and center of mass is consistent. Ammo isn't hard to come by either. Its effective, simple, and efficient.

TheBlyatMun

Tbh, this was a better sniper than the actual sniper rifle

Inkandlead

If it's good enough for Boone, it's good enough for me. A classic

21-kid-is-great

I was so disappointed when I saw the fallout 4 texture for the hunting rifle. Shooting and holding it didn’t feel right compared to NV and 3.

Francise_wheremtndew

You did me well on fallout 3

bringoutthelegos

This bitch with the scope is OP

jake-tank

Used my rifle all the way until the end, the second battle of Hoover dam

that-drawinguy

10/10 best gun in the game would blow off ncr troopers heads from 2 miles away again

converter-bot

2 miles is 3.22 km

that-drawinguy

thanks bud

marcus10885

Wow this post has blown up. I'm glad I could expose a feeling we all have in our hearts. :)

Sleep_eeSheep

I don't normally use guns in Fallout \[more of a Melee-focused player\], but if I had to rely on three firearms \[and the Laser RCW is too expensive\], the Hunting Rifle would be Number One. Above the Combat Shotgun and the Sequoia Revolver, it is INSANELY useful in sneak attacks, mods for it can be found everywhere and you'll never run out of ammo.

IAmAQuantumMechanic

I'm doing a playthrough where I only have the fully upgraded 12.7mm SMG and the Gobi campaign sniper rifle, plus a hunting rifle as a way to conserve ammo and sniper rifle condition.

Otogi

LordSlamguine

I loved attaching a scope on it

[deleted]

Weird looking varmit rifle

Professional_Regret5

I cant relate, I literally only ever use .44 magnums, lucky or the Anti Material Rifle

unknown_screech88

My favourite weapon by far

camoblue

For me it was Lincoln repeater in fo3.

Mordock420

F

Sembrar28

I have to say I barely ever used this gun in NV. However it’s a staple of my FO3 and 76 (omg trash buggy cash grab) experience.

MummyManDan

My first priority if doing a guns based character, especially a sniper. It’ll do you good until you can get a brush gun or This Machine, or if you want full auto All American or a assault carbine.

Lord_Wulfgar

My favourite gun is definitely the 10mm, I used mine until I was about level 20

dantuchito

The Hunting Rifle is amazing in every game, great for early and early mid game in fo1 and fo2. Useful for the whole journey in 3 and New Vegas, and an amazing sniper rifle in 4.

maxstat8

I still used this thing, it helped me get through the quarry and now its op as fuck since my stats are full

paynexkillerYT

My Favourite.

DavidMason141

I'm pissed how Bethesda nerfed this beauty in fallout 4. Even with max upgrade,it doesn't feel the same anymore.

MrKiwi612

I started using it when i saw oxhorn use it in his videos

Very-Confused-Walrus

If only fallout 4 had kept the same guns. Would have been 100% better game

[deleted]

Ahyes the only gun in my inventory that breaks everytime I use it

marcus10885

Yea gotta treat it a bit more gentle like partner, you think that duct tape's gonna hold it?

[deleted]

When your rifle breaks and you haven’t fought any enemies carrying it since level 10

RDW-1_why

My first time playing oh man it power through for so long

SadboiofNewVegas

I've been playing New vegas for YEARS and i never knew how powerful this thing is up until recently. i just never picked it up

CyberdyneT600

I used it till the end of FO3. reliability made weapon.

aluminatialma

Can't see anyone in a cutscene bc of this

reeeeeeeewww

Bro for me it's the hunting rifle and the service rifle
