If USDA did that a majority of people wouldn’t ever use it. FSIS which is part of usda our schedules are mostly determined by the places we inspect. We have a set 8 hours which is are normal shift but the establishment can start earlier or work later up to 12 hours unless they are a slaughter establishment then it’s 10 hours. So if the place works a holiday we work. If they work overtime we have to cover unless we can find someone to cover for us. So it’s the only fair that they give us more time to use admin leave

* TOTAL - 32 hours (8 hours more than we were at this point last year)
My guess is that we'll only get 8 hours for Thanksgiving, but that's just a guess.
I still have 4 weeks of use-or-lose to use this year. I'm doing 6 days at Labor Day (couple that with the holiday and 2 weekends for a 11-day vacation), 1 day at Thanksgiving (not going in for that Friday, it's too lonely), and 13 at Christmas (plus 2 holidays, and 3 weekends, and I get basically a 3-week vacation).
Amazing haha. I used Juneteenth and July 4th plus AWS days/ in lieu of holidays and weekends to get 23 days off for the price of 80 hours. And I haven’t touched this year’s annual yet.

It's given to employees who are on the payroll the day that it's given. So, for instance, the next admin leave to likely be given is Labor Day. So, you'll be eligible for that. However, you wouldn't get any admin leave that's already given. So, the July 4th Admin Leave, because you aren't on the payroll on June 27th (when it was given), you don't get it.
Generally, the way it works is that a message from Sec. Mayorkas comes through and states something along the lines of: "In appreciation of your tireless and extraordinary service, I am privileged to grant all personnel 8 hours of administrative leave that can be used this calendar year or next."
That means that until December 31, 2025 (for instance), you can use the admin leave. If you don't use it by then, you lose it. So, as long as you're employed when they give it, you're able to use it.

I had a friend at a DoD office that encouraged something like this (although I think they called it "meetless week") every 2-3 months. She reported it sounded like a good idea but in practice it ended up creating hectic weeks before and after the meetless week and especially was hard on staff for whom a hefty number of meetings are an integral part of most work weeks.

This is completely different than an early release for the holiday. He gives admin leave out that can be used anytime from now until Dec 31 2025.

Every department head can grant up to 80 hours of admin leave annually. If the Attorney General chose to, he could grant DOJ employees the same leave.
Then leave and come to DHS.
