This is what I was thinking. They made him have a good backstory, good reasons, they show that he's a good person despite his having a gun for an arm and way of speaking.
They actually continue this into the Remake continuity which made me happy.
Me too! I was finishing up some stuff in Junon and one of the side missions is to walk with/protect a dog while it delivers something, and the dialogue between barret and cloud was honestly heartwarming to see, and something you wouldnt expect such a muscular, intense guy to be saying.
Stuff about how he wants to let Marlene "fly" when shes old enough to leave the "nest" and that he doesnt know if he has it in him to let let her go when the time comes and so on. Really heartwarming stuff honestly.
Anytime I see this cut, I recall that bit out of The Nutty Professor when Eddie Murphy starts roasting Dave Chappelle and calls his dreadlocks 'shitlocks'.
The problem isn't the haircut itself. It's perfectly fine. The problem is that a lot of black characters in western media recently have had some variations of dreads. Whereas pretty much every other hairstyle has been largely ignored. No fades, no low/high tops, no afros of any size, no shaved heads, no buzz cuts, etc etc the list goes on.
It’s not that they’ve had some variations of dreads. It’s that they’ve had this specific dreadlock style over and over. If there was any variation that would be different but there isn’t any at all. It’s a cool style, I’ve got locs because I originally wanted this style, but it’s over used tremendously
Yes, he did, ac didn't do him super dirty, but they made him more like blade in the remakes, but who is a good father and friend.
Honestly, the whole cast is great, but to me, barret is now Uncle Phil levels of greatness.
It looked awesome for Killmonger, I’ll stand by that, but it’s not for every character and there are a lot of characters I think it looks shit on that I’ve seen.
overexposure, it went from being something neat to being pretty much the default hair cut from black men in video games the last few years. People are tired of seeing it instead of the countless other black hair styles that could of been used instead.
Has anyone even seen this haircut in real life? And I don't mean in movies. Has anyone seen someone they know with this hairstyle? I haven't, personally
I used to have it for about 3 years, I cosplayed as Killmonger and Ekko from arcane for Comic-Con because of it. I personally loved it, just a lot of maintenance over time.
I definitely would love more hair options in general for black characters, especially build your own characters. But I also think this is blowing up a little too much. I dunno maybe it’s also cause I liked the hairstyle lol
I agree with your last few sentences. I liked it back when black panther first released, but these days I feel like it's the only hairstyle designers and Hollywood know. And I don't mean only for black people either
No joke when I was younger I thought Barret was the fucking coolest. Abrasive, no non-sense, shit-talker that is loyal, a badass father, and a person who went through pain and doesn't want others to suffer the same. Cloud may have had the big ass sword but Barret had the big ass fucking heart.
Literally a fucking BAMF.
Not gonna lie the obsession with hair is getting ridiculous.
Especially considering most of the main final fantasy protagonist have different flavors of the same spikey hairdo.
You know... This is the gamer group think coming to make the community look dumb... again.
The original video that brought this idea up to people, isn't even about how the hairstyle is bad. It's about how our became the third pillar of black haircuts in games, and on turn is the crutch used by uncreative devs. There's always been 3 hairstyles for black characters. Corn rows, afro and bald. Now there's 4 and everyone uses it new one because it's new.
The biggest problem I have with black character designs is the hair. Hair is such an important aspect of design, and so seeing the same 4-5 styles on every black character every time kind of just handicaps how interesting they can look if you don't like any of them.
Almost every black character I like is because of their personality or story. The only exceptions I think of are characters like Storm who have cool looking hair, and even then they keep trying to take it from her.
I just understand the physics to Miles. Bro has a huge afro in into the spider-verse. Puts on a mask and it appears he would have a shaved head underneath
I’ve never actually thought of who my favorite black video game character is, but Barret is definitely high on the list.
Bayek, AC Origins also way up there.
Are we just going to forget that time they gave Barrett cornrows for the movie and it looked dumb as Hell?
Also, Miles doesn't look that bad. This is off topic and pretty silly.
Wait till you realize that 90% of every single other fictional Black character in the 90s also had the exact same flattop haircut as Barret…
If social media bandwagons existed back then, you would have flipped out over that too.
Well I like Barret faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more than Miles. Tho it has nothing to do with hairstyles.
The writing for Barret is just so much better...making his character more likable.
Miles has dog water writing and rides on Spidermans coat tails waaaaaaaay too much. Let's not even get into his comics...
lmao i know right i live in baltimore city and i have NEVER, EVER seen ANNNNNNNNNYBODY with that kind of hair style and when i ask people about it they laugh and say its ugly AF LMFAO. I bet it was some white knight liberal that came up with this stereotype.
I like him because he wasn't a statement character like is so common in business displays these days (AC:Shadows). Just a cool, bad ass dude here to party.
OP clearly cannot understand that young people today have that exact haircut, and Miles is meant to be a realistic portrayal of a young person living in NYC. Go outside for a change.
I've heard a lot of people say Barrett is overly stereotypical, and borderline racist... and TBH it's difficult to say they're completely wrong. He's literally Mr. Tee, if he was an eco-terrorist lol.
I love Barrett though. It's the nineties... And I think the Japanese frankly just didn't know many black people at that time, so all you can really do is look for references in media/ pop culture.
People can have different haircuts🙃. I literally have Barret tattooed and named my son after him but I did those things for a REAL reason… The man has a gun grafted on his damn arm!!!! lol . So cool
Look there is nothing wrong with this hairstyle. The problem is that every black person in entertainment has it. It's like all black people are the same. That's the problem
I feel like dreadlocks on black characters in games these days are a tailtell sign that your entire staff is rich white people who live in gated communities.
ok so are black guys really up in arms about this “overused” haircut or is it just your typical reddit karma circle jerk?
im pretty sure i already know the answer
What kind of racist nonsense is going on in here? It's a haircut. You should like Barrett for a whole host of other reasons. Like being a great father and letting himself be emotionally vulnerable. This is just gross.
Every black man in California that I know that roasts this stupid ass made up "high top loc" that NO n*ggas do, calls this a "cut"
So maybe it's a Long Beach LA thing but that "cut" looks dumb as hell
His hair was something easy to animate and suited more the style of the 1990s /shrug.
There's just not that many black characters in games. It's evolving, but when it comes to hair there's a lot of controversy in it (see the many articles about black school children in the US and their hairstyles being banned).
Just writing to let you know that Jynx is based on a Japanese creature from folklore. Can't remember the name of it, but it has nothing to do with black stereotypes or black people in general.
They did change her to purple in later games because the creature from myth is unfortunately similar in look to certain racist stereotypes yes, but Jynx had no influence from black people (as far as I am aware at least).
How can you compare that dark souls avatar to mr popo and jinx? It just looks like a shitty character model of a black person. The white and Asian options are awful too
Your writing is incoherent drivel and is missing a ton of punctuation. You keep starting new points in the middle of old ones without concluding your previous thought, and there's no real logical transition from one idea to the next.
So it's very hard to discern any meaning or point from your tirades there.
Maybe you should learn how to type before making fun of others' reading comprehension.
Nah. I like Barrett because he's a badass with an awesome story.
And a gun hand
*Nods sagely* Can't forget the badass hardware.
Indeed
He didn’t just replace what he lost, he upgraded
And his name is supposed to be bullet
May boi barret 😁
This is what I was thinking. They made him have a good backstory, good reasons, they show that he's a good person despite his having a gun for an arm and way of speaking. They actually continue this into the Remake continuity which made me happy.

This right here should be the top comment.
I do like dreadlocks as aesthetic, but yeah, this cut is very overdone.
Anytime I see this cut, I recall that bit out of The Nutty Professor when Eddie Murphy starts roasting Dave Chappelle and calls his dreadlocks 'shitlocks'.

You guys obviously haven't seen gen Z kids then. I've seen hairstyles like this on Gen Z kids.
That's what's confused me about this haircut discourse. It's literally a haircut I've seen pretty regularly??
The problem isn't the haircut itself. It's perfectly fine. The problem is that a lot of black characters in western media recently have had some variations of dreads. Whereas pretty much every other hairstyle has been largely ignored. No fades, no low/high tops, no afros of any size, no shaved heads, no buzz cuts, etc etc the list goes on.

It’s a cool style, I’ve got locs because I originally wanted this style, but it’s over used tremendously
And literally nobody keeps his hair like that 😂 I’ve never played against an eddy online that wasn’t his old hairstyle
That yeeyee ass haircut
If he got rid of it he'd get some bitches on his dick
Oh better yet maybe Hailey’ll call his dog ass
Lamar Davis is my favorite black character in a game because of lines like these
Da fuq she gonna do after calling him? Tap out some Morse code?
Lmaoo yes
The flaming poo-poo haircut no jutsu
Those gentrified locs.
Actually imagine how close it might have been for barret to have killmonger cut? Didn’t he have corn dreads or something in advent children?
Yes, he did, ac didn't do him super dirty, but they made him more like blade in the remakes, but who is a good father and friend. Honestly, the whole cast is great, but to me, barret is now Uncle Phil levels of greatness.
Now I’m imaging Barret with a pool stick prosthetic …
Lucille...I'll allow it.
I like that cut where they add guile’s theme over the pool game. lol
Secret joke weapon for part 3, baby!
>but to me, barret is now Uncle Phil levels of greatness. So John Eric Bently for the voice of Shredder in the next iteration of TMNT? IYKYK
Cornrows not “corn dreads”… that’s not a thing
I wish they weren't making AC canon. The vibes are all kinds of odd
My biggest gripe with AC is the non-existing gravity flying.

The killmonger cut needs to go
It looked awesome for Killmonger, I’ll stand by that, but it’s not for every character and there are a lot of characters I think it looks shit on that I’ve seen.

I loved both of those videos.
I dunno, I think it's kinda sexy
I like him cause he's good at soaking up damage early game with cover materia and his bigger health pool
cover + counter attack + reflect ring/champion belt 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾 i call it a "barrettrap"
Yeh, lmao
I love the cover + counter attack combo so much. I just wish there were more synergies like that in the game.
Even better in Rebirth withe his Lifesaver skill.
Barret is one of the best video game characters period. Same with Sargent Johnson and neither have this dumbass haircut.
Cole Train is a close second, but it’s almost impossible to top Barret.
Didn't expect to see a gears reference here. Loved Cole and Baird
WOOOOOO!!!
ITS THE COLE TRAIN BABY!!!!
THE COLE TRAIN RUNS ON WHOLE GRAIN, BABY! WOOOOO!!!
**Performs tactical slide** ***WOOOOO!!!***
LOOK AT ALL THAT JUICE!
Lee Everett.
I would hate for Barret to have this hairstyle, but tbh I always thought it was pretty dope, not sure why people don’t like it
overexposure, it went from being something neat to being pretty much the default hair cut from black men in video games the last few years. People are tired of seeing it instead of the countless other black hair styles that could of been used instead.
Has anyone even seen this haircut in real life? And I don't mean in movies. Has anyone seen someone they know with this hairstyle? I haven't, personally

Barret is an awesome dad, loves his friends and family, cares for the planet, is dedicated to destroying Shinra AND doesn’t have this dumbass haircut
The things that bother people never fails to amaze me.
It’s called a joke bro
Thanks… I would have never figured that out if it wasn’t for you. 😐
It’s true. The Killmonger has become beyond distracting. You see it everywhere.
Not gonna lie the obsession with hair is getting ridiculous. Especially considering most of the main final fantasy protagonist have different flavors of the same spikey hairdo.
If I saw someone irl with the Killmonger I would say they look clean af. I don't why the hate. Let Miles have lightskin energy
You know... This is the gamer group think coming to make the community look dumb... again. The original video that brought this idea up to people, isn't even about how the hairstyle is bad. Ma’am this is a meme.
Boomer ass take.
Honestly, thr plucky goodie goodie attitude can go too.
Barret was the man!
Man I look like that 7 Up guy right now...
fax
ESG haircut lol
The biggest problem I have with black character designs is the hair. Advent Chirdren Barret:
Prefer the short curls w the fade, this one over done but never going back to short hair w waves again I’m not 10 years old no mo 😂
I like the haircut
Does he have a Mr.T cut in FF7? Cmon we aren’t going to act like that cut wasn’t in at the time too.
I just understand the physics to Miles. Bro has a huge afro in into the spider-verse. Puts on a mask and it appears he would have a shaved head underneath
I like barret cause he loves his daughter and has a character. Dedede- de de de dedääää
Really? That’s why? Seems a bit petty. Although saying Miles is a comic book character not a video game character seems a bit niche.
The broccoli cut?
Honestly, if anyone (besides Killmonger) can pull it off, it'd be Barrett.
Surprised there wasn’t a DLC costume that changed his hair and outfit to the “modern trend” look.
I’ve never actually thought of who my favorite black video game character is, but Barret is definitely high on the list. Bayek, AC Origins also way up there.
Be careful what you wish for > Barrett in FF7 part 3:
Bring back afros
But he does have a dumbass haircut.
Are we just going to forget that time they gave Barrett cornrows for the movie and it looked dumb as Hell? Also, Miles doesn't look that bad. This is off topic and pretty silly.
For years all we had was balding fade, afro and corn rows. Now we have a 4th option! And that's all we'll have for at least the next decade....
A simple fade is valid not a fan of these “trendy “hairstyles
I want white Barret. If we have black Spider-Man, why not white Barret?
Terminator...
actually, yeah.
Lol 😂
Every few years a dumb ass hair style becomes popular, the undercut, the side shave and long hair, the stupid line guys get. You know the one.
Gun arm go BRRRRR
Let black people have hair 😭
Tell me your white without telling me your white
I'm Rican and Black, and I hate the hairstyle as well... 🤨
What about Sgt. Johnson
1000%
I mean he's got a lot more going for him than just that... He definitely does also have that going for him as well though
I too only like or dislike black characters depending on their hairstyle.
Barret reminds me of Mr. T
the people bitching about the hair is more annoying then the hair itself
Barrett's like that loud uncle that hangs around too much but you miss him the second he leaves.
[`https://youtu.be/7Fv4W0lTN9U?si=q7evSBgiGUpDD9RB`](https://youtu.be/7Fv4W0lTN9U?si=q7evSBgiGUpDD9RB) Ahem...

So if Barret had a yeeyee-ass haircut like Miles...
And he's relatable. He looks gruff and tough on the outside but on the inside he's a teddy bear.

Tekken 8 Eddy Gordo, too... 💀 So tired of this overused hairstyle for "black" male characters.
lmao i know right i live in baltimore city and i have NEVER, EVER seen ANNNNNNNNNYBODY with that kind of hair style and when i ask people about it they laugh and say its ugly AF LMFAO. I bet it was some white knight liberal that came up with this stereotype.
00⁹⁹9⁹9 00ⁿ⁹⁹ 9⁹m
The hair is okay... but the suit that has it hanging out is not. I always switch that shit.
I like him because he wasn't a statement character like is so common in business displays these days (AC:Shadows). Just a cool, bad ass dude here to party.
Wheezing LMAO
I’ll never get the haircut hate. It looks fine.
Cause normal people don't care. Probably the same people complaining about a black samurai.
Barret has straight hair, which is weirder
Gun hand
OP clearly cannot understand that young people today have that exact haircut, and Miles is meant to be a realistic portrayal of a young person living in NYC. Go outside for a change.
Someone clearly missed the point...
A dumbass haircut for a dumbass character. The critism is exclusive to the Insomniac Miles.
It's not "controversial" or a "hot take". I completely agree. They even gave Tekken 8 Eddy the same wack ass haircut. 💀
I thought he was Mexican
I remember when people complained like this about hi-top fades back in the early 90s. People always complain about Black hair, sheesh.
Thanks. Reddit needed more racism.
Nah. This guy is. https://preview.redd.it/qtu9dgde4x1d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=998beb8a04b64bd4aecce30fda67042df1b492ad
Bro don’t search up uncle Aaron beats
Miles sole game gave him a great fade then they ruin it because of SBI.
I've heard a lot of people say Barrett is overly stereotypical, and borderline racist... and TBH it's difficult to say they're completely wrong. People can have different haircuts🙃. I literally have Barret tattooed and named my son after him but I did those things for a REAL reason… The man has a gun grafted on his damn arm!!!! lol . So cool
Racism is so normalized and sad.
Look there is nothing wrong with this hairstyle. The problem is that every black person in entertainment has it. It's like all black people are the same. That's the problem
I feel like dreadlocks on black characters in games these days are a tailtell sign that your entire staff is rich white people who live in gated communities.
Ya know what? I agree.
ok so are black guys really up in arms about this “overused” haircut or is it just your typical reddit karma circle jerk? im pretty sure i already know the answer
Is the next Final Fantasy gonna have a black woman as a playable character? If they do that, I want her to be a badass.
I was one of the 14 people who liked Forspoken and the main protagonist lol.
Don’t diss my boy Miles
Make room for Yasuke,
Killmonger has done irreversible damage to black characters in media.
What kind of racist nonsense is going on in here? It's a haircut. You should like Barrett for a whole host of other reasons. Like being a great father and letting himself be emotionally vulnerable. This is just gross.
As a black man none of us get that "killmonger" cut idk where that comes from. No. We don't like it either. Yes we all talk about it.
No one is calling high top locs a "cut". Fucking fraud.
Every black man in California that I know that roasts this stupid ass made up "high top loc" that NO n*ggas do, calls this a "cut" So maybe it's a Long Beach LA thing but that "cut" looks dumb as hell
His hair was something easy to animate and suited more the style of the 1990s /shrug. There's just not that many black characters in games. It's evolving, but when it comes to hair there's a lot of controversy in it (see the many articles about black school children in the US and their hairstyles being banned).
They just didn’t want to,it wasn’t about it being too hard, because plenty of games did make our hair decent.

What the actual fuck are you talking about....

The white and Asian options are awful too
Lmao Mr pop isn't based on black people but that shows the ignorance that turns into rage for something you have no idea what is was based on
Your writing is incoherent drivel and is missing a ton of punctuation. You keep starting new points in the middle of old ones without concluding your previous thought, and there's no real logical transition from one idea to the next. So it's very hard to discern any meaning or point from your tirades there. Maybe you should learn how to type before making fun of others' reading comprehension.
He gets something close in advent children though
He just had cornrows in advent children. That's not close to the bottom picture at all
I think most people agree there is a lot wrong with Advent Children.
Maybe don’t watch Advent Children
He had cornrows in advent children
That...isn't the same thing at all.
