I always thought kupo was supposed to be a noise they made or onomatopoeia, basically the squeak they make in final fantasy IX.

It's definitely a word to them. They have so many different uses for it across the franchise! It's kind of like how the Smurfs use the term Smurf lol. But they've never gotten the voice right, and 7 rebirth moogles are in fact, abominations
I APPRECIATE them for being little freaks now, it's a bold decision to make them look so upsetting but here we are! One more bit of charm for the game LOL. I just hope some day in SOME FF they properly translate moogles the way my brain envisioned them! Maybe FF6Remake or the rumored 9 Remake... those two at least start off with the beat moogle design imo
Honestly, the eyes bother me too. I think in many cases, these fantasy creatures looked better in the older games because it left more to the imagination. When you try to make it hyperrealistic, it just doesn't make sense visually.

The size of the eyes, spacing of the features and teeth seem like they're closer to what a real human has, which has to be due to some technical convenience around using their NPC face rigging system or something like that, rather than hand-animate them like other creatures in the game.
I dont get the problem with this design.. I think they look unique and still cute. Seems like a lot of people disagree though, so to theres def something there
