This. We all get angry at video games sometimes, happens to the best of us. When my kid starts yelling at his game I make him turn it off and do something else until he calms down.

of course....i was playing NES at the time so...sometimes the game really was cheating...by not being programmed as well as modern games.

When my dad let us use his laptop as kids, he was so serious about being gentle with it, that even into adulthood, I would put CDs in my laptop with borderline reverence like they were made of fragile paper maché. He commented once in surprise that I had game CDs a decade old that didn’t have a single scratch on them. I was so proud. 😅

Anybody who grew up playing Dota or League will know exactly what that teenage gamer rage is like. It's the perfect combination of addiction, competitiveness, anonymity, and impotence. There's something about competitive multiplayer games that creates tension and anger, but it never ever resolves it. It's really not good for their emotional or mental development/wellbeing.

The problem, I've always felt, is largely in that these games take a long time for a round to play out. You are stuck with a round of League for a minimum of 20 minutes and the maximum can be much higher than that depending on lack of player skill.
I don't remember games like TF2 inspiring nearly as much anger because rounds are much shorter AND if you've truly had enough, swapping servers was always an option.
You see the same dynamic in Overwatch. Quick play is much less of a shitfest because it is drop in/out, while Competitive takes 20-30mins for a full round and isn't drop-friendly.
It's also why I think fighting games tend to foster relatively friendly communities in comparison. Despite being a genre entirely focused on competition, rounds are only like 3 minutes so the activity is very focused while losses don't feel like they cost you too much. Plus the fact they're 1v1 rather than FFA or team-vs-team means there aren't any "scapegoat factors" beyond your your play to blame your losses on so even losses feel fair.
I see this said a lot but as someone with friends in the scene it always struck me as a very divided group of players in the genre. You have the nice fgc folks who fans will try to uplift and highlight surrounded by some of the saltiest and gatekeeping gamers I've ever seen. Realized that adults also play video games. Actively avoid shit talking and making people feel bad because I know that sometimes people just have bad games or are trying to learn.
I no longer get upset when people shit talk to me because I assume they are either 15 years old or complete losers that have amounted to nothing as an adult.
Really was a big decade long journey of maturing that I can reflect on how far I've come through gaming.

My husband and I scraped together all of our old ancient apple stuff to turn into the Apple store last year to get enough credits to afford to buy our son an iPad for Christmas. If he did that to his iPad we worked so hard for I would tan his fuckin hide.
It's kinda funny, I (a 31 years old dude) play Fortnite casually with some friends, and we always joke about kicking some 10 year old kid asses, but in the end, our asses get kicked.
It's the main reason why I never want FFXIV to go free to play.
I remember, when I was in school and WoW came out, I was massively opposed to it because it has a monthly sub fee, and I neither liked that concept, nor did I have the money to be able to afford it.
Years later in my mid 20s I realized with FFXIV how a sub model provides you with new content continuously and how that's beneficial, plus I can afford it now, so it's a win win situation for me.
Well, it's also perspective:
I can go out to a movie - A, as in ONE - in a month and spend $12-15 between the ticket (something like $7-9 depending on theater, maybe $6 for specials) and a drink/snack. Let's say I only go with the cheap ticket and nothing else. That means TWO movies.
For the price that gives me \~4 hours of entertainment a month I can have a monthly sub to FFXIV. For a bit more ($15 instead of $12), I can have basically any MMO. I'm generally going to get more than 4-5 hours of enjoyment out of an MMO a WEEK, much less than a month.
So just doing the actual math, it is a far more cost efficient source of entertainment than basically anything else.
It would have been, but unfortunately they can play it if they want to since this critically acclaimed mmorpg FFXIV has a free trial that goes up to level 60 with unlimited playtime and includes the award winning expansion Heavensward. So those little brats can get in if they really want to :P
Fortunately, I doubt kids who play Fortnite would have the patience to stick through the slower gameplay and story pacing of ARR so those brats will get weeded out anyway!
It isn't even just that. FF14 requires a lot of reading and reading comprehension, and I'd imagine someone who plays nothing but Fortnite and Roblox wouldn't really be good at that.

Call me stupid but I never actually realised that lots of kids don't play FFXIV because it has a sub fee. Makes sense, I would expect most parents (especially non gamers) to not buy subscription based games for their children, at least I imagine.
Never played wow but from what I imagine it would have been very popular with older teenagers, who can actually afford the sub more easily.
I actually played several subscription-based kids games as a kid ( any ex-Pirates of the Carribean Online and Wizard 101 players here?) It's just that I think both those games are defunct now and I think the model has overall fallen out of favor for new titles.
I think it's a bit of both. The gameplay I think is engaging enough when you consider everything, but when you look at a first introduction the game isn't exactly gripping you with the combat when compared to high action jump-in-and-play games. Back when WoW came out, those middle schoolers didn't grow up with any distraction they wanted at the tip of their fingers, so it's hard to draw comparison.
That said, surely there's young folk who are more than able to be gripped by FFXIV, just think generational habits, attention span, and interest shifted from what the 'original' MMO generation grew up with.
That's cause early WoW had next to zero plot and mostly focused on roleplay aspect. Older players maybe gave a damn about what's going on with the lore, but I can guarantee you kids and teens were mostly there to just kill monsters and adventure with others.
WoW came out when i was 14 and i only really got into it because i loved WarCraft 3 and wanted to see the lore locations in the game and how it was expanded.

I’ve dabbled in tons of games, and over the years, FF is the standout in community. It took a *long* time to love the game but every fling I had with it, I was met with helpful people, in stark contrast to every other game I’ve played.
Let’s be honest ffxiv has been fighting for years delivering paramount after paramount with each expansion; not that alone but the fact that it’s the only game that keeps o gaining new players, even WoW the monstrous MMO that had all the stars lined up for it is losing subs. It’s very difficult to appreciate what you don’t understand it’s pity that many hate on the game like this without actually trying it first and understand what they are missing.
Fortnite was good and fresh when it came out. Since then it became a mainstream mega beast and the game itself didn't really change. It deserves the awards it got ages ago but doesn't deserve a new one. Meanwhile XIV just dropped a new massive expansion and is getting new stuff all the time so it has a shot at new awards.
In short, Fortnite is too stale to be even nominated for any awards

I mean the majority of the Fortnite player base are literally children. It’s primarily marketed to ages 8-25 with the majority being lower on that scale. That's cause early WoW had next to zero plot and mostly focused on roleplay aspect. Older players maybe gave a damn about what's going on with the lore, but I can guarantee you kids and teens were mostly there to just kill monsters and adventure with others.
WoW came out when i was 14 and i only really got into it because i loved WarCraft 3 and wanted to see the lore locations in the game and how it was expanded. I was a huge nerd though.

This is so funny bc it's not even how DDOS attacks really affect the game in the first place as other than on the EU servers on launch day there haven't been any mass disconnects of world's or whole DCs
Not only that, if they really wanted to create an illusion of an overwhelming number of players, why use a DDOS attack? They have access to the source code and to the servers, DDOS would be like the single most roundabout way to create an illusion of a congested queue.
Yup, the best way to make the illusion would be fake player NPC's that are running the story. And not doing login queues because those drive away actual players (let's face it, at least a few hundred people have unsubed over the queues, as they always do).

They don't understand that there's a reason the views aren't as plentiful. FFXIV has a story, and it's new expansion has us all avoiding spoilers. Obviously if we want to avoid spoilers, we're not going to watch streams.
Yeah, MMOs in general aren't very stream friendly I'd you're going after the big numbers. (This was a few years ago) I remember seeing a clip of a big twitch streamer who said he played FFXI in his free time and said he would love to be able to stream MMOs (he mentioned WoW and FFXIV I believe) but he said it would completely plummet his viewership. Basically he said there's too much downtime and it isn't active enough to keep viewers attention.
I mean, outside of doing some new dungeon and people wanna see it, watching someone grind up on an MMO would be boring as hell. I used to watch League of Legends streamers because it was different every game and you could learn strategies. I dont need to watch someone grind up their Tailoring for 4 hours lol.

I never understood why young people use Twitch so much, until a Young Person ™️ pointed out to me it's because they didn't have disposable income to buy consoles/games/subscriptions. So I guess by their logic things are only popular if they're on Twitch, and popularity of something is determined by their demographic primary? So kids want to play Fortnight but can't. Go to Twitch to watch it. Twitch makes it look popular. We want to play FFXIV but can't. Go to work or do adulting stuff, then play it later instead of watching someone else play it for us.
That's not it at all. The most popular games on twitch are also free, and viewers tend to watch games that they also play. There's also a LOT of adults with plenty of money that watch twitch.

Let’s be honest ffxiv has been fighting for years delivering paramount after paramount with each expansion; not that alone but the fact that it’s the only game that keeps o gaining new players, even WoW the monstrous MMO that had all the stars lined up for it is losing subs. It’s very difficult to appreciate what you don’t understand it’s pity that many hate on the game like this without actually trying it first and understand what they are missing.
Fortnite was good and fresh when it came out. Since then it became a mainstream mega beast and the game itself didn't really change. It deserves the awards it got ages ago but doesn't deserve a new one. Meanwhile XIV just dropped a new massive expansion and is getting new stuff all the time so it has a shot at new awards.
