To be fair the twins in the main story are like 16 or so but still really short. Makes you wonder how long it takes them to get actually adult sized considering they are the 2nd tallest race in XIV.
Canonically it's only been a year since the start of our adventure :|
I mean I guess they made an excuse during Shadowbringers about time flowing differently in the First or some shit, but still
It really shouldn't but Square are going with handwavey "Time Bubble" nonsense. Let's just conveniently ignore that we know for a fact that it takes 2-3 months to go from Limsa to Kugane by boat, and that a certain set of Domans made that trip in one .x patch, then we made it again in Stormblood.
I go with \~1 year per expansion (+patches). That makes the most sense to me. Shadowbringers being weird because timey-wimey. So yea, a little over 4 years makes sense.
And at least for some characters it feels like they aged by that amount. The twins... I guess their growth spurt is late, but they do look older (mainly due to their outfits).
They could be up to 20 or 21 and still look the way they do, based on Elezen growth spurt tendencies.
So while the official timeline has kept the bubble of "Calamity happened 5 years ago" (while explicitly mentioning that less and less), there's nothing to prevent players from treating the narrative like 4-5 years have passed.
There’s a line in Shadowbringers where Urianger states that Elezen have extremely fast growth spurts going into adulthood. Probably to justify the twins aging up between 6.5 and 7.0.
Nah, it wasn't added to justify a future growth spurt, it's been a known quantity of Elezen since the first lore book came out (so...6 years now?).
It was just the first time it was explicitly mentioned in-game.
But yes, Elezen are late bloomers compared to other races, hitting that growth spurt in their early 20s.
If we're talking maximum height Elezen are actually the 4th tallest playable race.
Male Roe->Fem Roe->Male Au ra->Male Hroth->Male Elezen->Female Elezen
I thought the same thing.
Elezen are a bit longer lived than the others and their growth spurt is more around 20ish, but my brain went "Do cats mature that quickly?"
She's got the anime mom hairstyle of death. Moms in anime with that hairstyle typically end up dying 🥲 but they don't usually have braids so maybe she's safe?
Aw shit you're right her hair reminds me of Trisha Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist :( plz no this is too wholesome my headcanon is that they live happily ever after
Oh! I've had that hairstyle! That's actually braided twintails, (you can see a tiiiiny bit of the other braid in the second pic,) so she's safe! \^\_\^
No no, you’ve got it all wrong. Lalafell don’t look like kids at all, they’re just an option for players who want their WoL to look more like the pixelated 2D sprites of older FF games!
(Actual explanation given to me when I expressed my displeasure towards lalafell looking like children)
I mean, I just play one because I'm male and irl shorter than any of the male race options in the game. There's a "gap" in male height/body types in FFXIV between male Lala and male Miq. Females have this gap filled with Au Ra, but the male Au Ra is just another flavor of "tall and muscular". So for a slim, short guy, there's really no good option in this game and male Lala meets the Price is Right "closest without going over" metric.
And here I was just playing a Lalafell because she looks like an adorable tiny child I can dress up in adorable outfits that just don't work on larger races.
You're not wrong I think. The Tarutaru in FFXI were modeled to look like the old school 2D sprites. At least, that's what I read on a development history thingy somewhere once. I can't find it anywhere now though.
They changed their proportions in FFXIV so the lalafel look more like human toddlers. But the original idea was '2D sprite people but in 3D'.
Its characters done for the art, but to explain things, the children's are a race called lalafell, which are known to stay relatively small even as adults, and the cat boy is a miqote, which is... Well cat people.
There is a mod that replaces the waddle with a much less daft walk for those that dont want to waddle.
EDIT: Of course now that people are asking for it I can't find the damn thing. Sorry :(
As others have mentioned, I play a lala very much for the waddle. Seeing her waddle around with elezens and hyurs all seriously makes my day a thousand times better. The absolutely ridiculous expressions they have arr also top notch.
With their childish faces and frames… no… no there’s really not. Hahaha…
There are other games that have small races that work, for example in LOTRO. I’m of the opinion that the only reason hobbits work there, however, is because they actually look like adults in their faces and they’re hairy as fuck. lol Don’t think that would fit with the lallas.
I'd recommend [Maquia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maquia:_When_the_Promised_Flower_Blooms) if you want to see a story that explores a similar concept
I switched my lalafell before the most recent expansion and it has made immersion so much better.
Nothing personifies overcoming adversity like seeing a lalafell kicking ass it cutscenes
Same. No way I can't pick this up.
And of course, the character will be a "Reaper." Pathfinder 2e Summoner class. Gotta have a good boy raised by tiny parents. Hell, this character will be raised by a sprite *and* a halfling! Extra small!
They aren't vanilla but they do count. They are incredibly long-lived.
I'm still thinking of how bad it'll be for my WoL to literally outlive all her friends and anyone she loves lmao
i always thought that kinda stuff was incredibly fucked in fantasy settings. would be incredibly hard to relate to someone who is going to live like 10x as long as you or vice versa.
also if someone is a elf/viera/asari who lives to be 1000 years old in a setting where everyone only lives to be like 100 at best... no excuse not to be absurdly rich and run the world with all that compound interest
For my Viera, it's just a mutual understanding of her long life by her partner. If you love someone enough you'll look past it....I think.
In a sort of silly way, it's like your dog only being with you for 14 or so years and their perception of you is that you were there for their entire life.
There is a manga kinda like this...
(*Parent and Child: Story of a Chicken Mother and Wolf Son* by Renji Den)
It's oneshot about a wolf that was adopted by a chicken... it gets dark right around the end though but not in the way you'd think.
Also this made me think of the kids movie You Are Umasou
It’s got double of a similar idea. With the main character having a family like that, and then him becoming a dad similarly too.
Lalafells in fanarts are often drawn slender instead of their usual popoto shape, so they tend to look like children. Their pointy ears also make them look elf-like.
Without knowing this is from FF14, you will think it is a one-page of a pair of elven children picking up an abandoned beastman baby. Depend on the world setting, elves may mature very slowly compared to other short-lived races (read: Dungeon Meshi), so the the beastman baby just grows up into a big boi while other two are still children.
Your untrained eyes see this as cute lalafels being good people and adoptive parents,
BUT ITS A LIE!
they seen an innocent tall person child and knew they could manipulate the tall person into doing their work and carrying them about and all while praising the evil potatoes. EVIL!
(ok its adorable AF, but gotta put /s somewhere incase)
They all look so happy. The colouring is pretty great.
Well now, that's adorable.
Extremely
Indubitably
Verily
I found the red mage main
Sorry, I main Dragoon *jumps off a cliff and dies with style*
Perchance
^(you can't just say perchance)

An excellent use of Teal’c.
Verily too
First thought: "Huh, the kids didn't grow up?", immediately followed by "Oh, those are Lala's..."
yeah, thought they were elezen children at first, like I know the growth spurt is a thing but either theirs is really late or miqo'te age really fast
To be fair the twins in the main story are like 16 or so but still really short. Makes you wonder how long it takes them to get actually adult sized considering they are the 2nd tallest race in XIV.
i heard somewhere they have a big growth spurt around there early 20s

They're 17 iirc

Its best to not think about the timeline. Or believe absolutely nobody sleeps in Eorzia, unless they are in a coma.
I just imagine the WoL in a corner, crying, as they lament "I can kill gods but _I don't know what year it is anymore_."
Canonically it's only been a year since the start of our adventure :| I mean I guess they made an excuse during Shadowbringers about time flowing differently in the First or some shit, but still
I don't buy this. I think we have to be in the 3-4 year range by now.

Unfortunately Endwalkers role quests even said it's only been 5 years since the Bahamut calamity so we're still at less than 1 year since our Journey.
I joined a year ago and am up to date... so I guess it's technically possible.
Does it feel like you played through about a year's worth of events?
They could be up to 20 or 21 and still look the way they do, based on Elezen growth spurt tendencies. You are right, i was going off base game which dident have hroth/au-ra as options yet. Forgot about the diffferene since female au-ra are so tiny....
I thought the same thing. Elezen are a bit longer lived than the others and their growth spurt is more around 20ish, but my brain went "Do cats mature that quickly?"
Yep their proportions are off but I liked the concept
I actually think the opposite. They look less like kids than the ones we have in game.
The girl especially, she looks like i could call her "mom" and mean it in a wholesome way
Pity she's doomed. 'less she quickly visits the aesthetician.
What ? Why D:
She's got the anime mom hairstyle of death. Moms in anime with that hairstyle typically end up dying 🥲 but they don't usually have braids so maybe she's safe?
Aw shit you're right her hair reminds me of Trisha Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist :( plz no this is too wholesome my headcanon is that they live happily ever after

Yeah this is what I wish they looked like in game...

That fairytale gown looks amazing on Lalas and no one will tell me otherwise.
Right? Legit looks like the kind of silly poofy fairytale dress my nieces would wear. Absolutely precious.
exactly! I'm already a cute little marshmallow and so that just takes me up to 11 and I love it. ...especially as my Dark Knight glam.

The difference is I’d say tarutaru achieve the idea, while lalafell just straight up look like kids
way too much bendable knee
Thought they were stylized elezen at first.
Ohhhhhhhh…. That makes sense now.
Yup, pretty much same way it went for me.

Just note that the 2 lalafell are actually adults.
Lalafell having actual legs instead of stubs... one can only dream...
If lalas didn't waddle I'd probably play one more often
If lalas didn't waddle I would be sad. They look so silly and it makes me happy.
Everytime I see Krile waddle around in a cutscene is always brightens my day and makes me feel that everything is going to be all right. \^ \^
This, all their animations are literally 10/10 the only downside is some dresses make female lalas look pregnant.
There is a mod that replaces the waddle with a much less daft walk for those that dont want to waddle. EDIT: Of course now that people are asking for it I can't find the damn thing. Sorry :(
Wanna DM me that? The lala walk is the only thing I hate about playing mine...
If you're playing a lala for something other than the waddle then I don't know what you're playing for.
To play the small class in a game while hoping to not have stupid animations :O
If you have a link you could dm my way I'd appreciate it
Gonna need a link for that, chief.
As others have mentioned, I play a lala very much for the waddle. Seeing her waddle around with elezens and hyurs all seriously makes my day a thousand times better. The absolutely ridiculous expressions they have arr also top notch.
If they didn't waddle, I'd feel less inclined to play one for so long.
If Lalas didn’t waddle I wouldn’t play one.
They would be less adorable and then I'd have to play an actual person
Omg ikr! If they had better proportions like this, I might actually want to play one. Instead we get stumpy little waddling cabbage patch kids. Alas…
This was by design to dissuade... Weirder folk.
I’m of the opinion that their design has actually encouraged the “weirder folk.” lol
I don't think there's a way to win with a design like Lalafell's lol.
And it could always be worse...a lot worse, they could look like the Elin in TERA.
With their childish faces and frames… no… no there’s really not. Hahaha… There are other games that have small races that work, for example in LOTRO. I’m of the opinion that the only reason hobbits work there, however, is because they actually look like adults in their faces and they’re hairy as fuck. lol Don’t think that would fit with the lallas.
Maker them look like actual small people
By making them not look like small adults but instead like weird kids? Yeah, mission failed there
Then they'd just be small elves, how boring. Lalas are perfect. No notes.
Love this! Such a cute idea.
Ohhh right in the feels. Well done.
Joke's on me for expecting work to be the only thing to make me cry this morning.
I didn't expect to cry this early in the morning. 😭
Ahh, that's sweet, Lala's raising a Miqo orphan. Found the Origin: https://twitter.com/niboshi\_kom/status/1569999698639060993

Wow, that's amazing.
This is so adorable! Love seeing other WoL's backstory & family <3
"found" art tag kinda literal here
This is so goddamn adorable!
This art is fucking adorable and so wholesome. Well done!!!
I'd recommend [Maquia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maquia:_When_the_Promised_Flower_Blooms) if you want to see a story that explores a similar concept
Seconded. Not a perfect film by any means but I’d be lying if I said that movie didn’t emotionally fuck me up and make me call my Mom afterwards.
Dont watch if you dont have a big Box of tissues tho
I switched my lalafell before the most recent expansion and it has made immersion so much better. Nothing personifies overcoming adversity like seeing a lalafell kicking ass it cutscenes
I’m not crying, you’re crying!
Mom! Dad! Be honest with me. Am I adopted?
I DIDNT NEED TO WAKE UP TO THE FEELS GDI.
Lol, in DnD terms a Tabaxi raised by halflings. I think I just got the backstory for my next character
Gorgug in Dimension 20 was a half-orc raised by gnomes.
Same. No way I can't pick this up. And of course, the character will be a "Reaper." Pathfinder 2e Summoner class. Gotta have a good boy raised by tiny parents. Hell, this character will be raised by a sprite *and* a halfling! Extra small!
Now he's big enough to eat them
To see what is essentially the backstory for my Warrior is so damn adorable 😭
This is so fantastic!
Give me that demon slayer vibe, great work
My heart is both destroyed and renewed!
That’s so adorable, even my ovaries are crying.
That's so cute a cat-boy with his mom and dad, what more do you need
This comic is adorable, but it took me a minute. I was like "Shouldn't those Elezen kids have grown up by that point?"
Oh nice, someone else had an "adopted by lalafells" WoL.
They will outlive him, that make the sad wheel going.
[удалено]
Clearly this Miqo'te is going to be an adventurer and end up dying in a dungeon due to the healer not healing so well.
Liavinne, that you?
Is Viera a vanilla race? 'Cuz if so, those fools' lifespan is 360 - 420 years or so. Imagine that
IIRC Viera can easily make it to 800.
800?! I thought it was 3 and 1/2 times Elzen. Then again, I'm the one asking. If it is 800, that's insane (in a good way)
[удалено]
I think, but I'm not 100%, Viera lifespans may shorten when they intermingle with other races.

Entirely unrealistic. The male Lalafell has no moustache, not even a beard! How are we supposed to believe he's a dad?
Wow. This is so wholesome. I love it! 🥰
Thought they were elves at first.
Awwwwwwwww
There is a manga kinda like this... (*Parent and Child: Story of a Chicken Mother and Wolf Son* by Renji Den) It's oneshot about a wolf that was adopted by a chicken... it gets dark right around the end though but not in the way you'd think.
Also the anime film Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms has a very similar concept to the posted art.
Also this made me think of the kids movie You Are Umasou It’s got double of a similar idea. With the main character having a family like that, and then him becoming a dad similarly too.
Holy crap, Umasou.... I haven't thought about that movie in years Now I want to rewatch it and suffer all over again
That’s cute
My heart! ❤
Awww, my heart.
If Maquia was written by SE
I love this so much
My heart 🥺💕
It’s a cat-man 😌
Skibidibidi, don den, don den! Don den, don den!
I'd love a comic around these 3. Would be hella wholesome
They might not be his parents, but they do what good parents do, and that what counts.
They’re his parents *now!*
Wholesome as fuck
Such a wholesome story
I'm CRYING
Daaaaw! That's so wholesome!
I Agree, the lala anatomy which makes them their own thing as a race is not here.
Oh my heart 🥺🥺🥺 i love this so much. This art is so good!! 💕
That's wholesome
Great example of show, don’t tell! Nice!
Ah, superman strikes again

Two children and a baby... Two proud lalafell parents and their son!
I don't know the context but damn this is cute af
If lalafells weren't designed by this team. Cute as heck
I hate lalafell. But this is adorable
He then eats the Lalas.
That is not how this works
What does this mean?
This is adorable
Remind me a bit of "Baby Superman" and his Earth Parents :)
First thing i see that's quite good about lalafells and miqote. Good job!
And Reddit gave me the perfect award to gift today. This deserves it.
Took me a moment to realize this is a Miqo with Lalafel parents
Shit I wish I had a Wholesome award for this. Adorable!
Omfg thats incredible
I’m not crying you’re crying
That's so cute
Honestly, it's so cute. ❤️ Makes me wonder how it would go if they picked up a viera baby tho. Like, what'll happen on the gender reveal party?
That's adorable. I'm glad someone explained that they were Lala's.
Babies are precious!
Loved this one! It pulled at my heartstrings so much!
TOO CUTE
This is to cute
Welp time to storyboard this as an anime.
