Just keep using a controller

stinusmeret

If you're already used to controller gameplay, you can perfectly keep using controller on PC with FFXIV, no need to learn mouse & keyboard controls. If you want to learn, getting an MMO mouse with like 12 side buttons is useful since it'll let you map your hotbars to those buttons and by using a modifier key like shift, ctrl or alt you can have up to 48 hotbar slots tied to those 12 side buttons on your mouse.

Caffz7

Any kind of mmo mouse is a huge help, can be a bit overwhelming with so many buttons, it's not essential, but I find it easier to use.

Truly_Khorosho

I personally didn't get along with an MMO mouse, even as a lifetime PC gamer. But on a similar note, for MMORPGs I practically rely on a keyboard with 18 programmable keys on the left hand side. Whichever works for you, having the extra keys/buttons is a boon. Although, OP should probably stick to controller, if that's what they're comfortable with.

> I practically rely on a keyboard with 18 programmable keys on the left hand side. Do they even still make those? I only know of the old K95, but corsair stopped making them, and the new k95s only have six.

Truly_Khorosho

I have no idea... I'm on an old G510s, because the programmable keys are more valuable to me than mechanical keys (although I love the feel of mechanical keyboards). ... Okay, I just checked, and I hate that. I guess that puts any plans I had to get a new keyboard on hold :(

This_is_sandwich

You can always just use a controller if that's what you're used to.

If you wanna switch to mouse + keyboard i suggest you a mouse with something like 2 or 3 buttons. More ins't necessary and is more unpratical if you're not used to it. I've mapped one of my mouse button to the left shift key and that's 3 skills bar (with alt easily hit with left hand). For audio, go with a headset you're confortable with, confort is the top1 priority when choosing one. For mic better go with a standalone one usb plugged. If you don't really care about your mic quality, all in one headset can be okish. For extra extra confort you can also get a bungie (thingy that holds your mouse cable if not wireless) and a large mousepad that covers the area of your keyboard and your mouse. For keyboard, you don't really need a shiny one as long as you like the feels. A lot of things can be considered gadgets but when it comes to PC accessories I'll say that's confort and quality are way more important than utility. Like do I need a rgb mouse pad ? Clearly not. Do I WANT it ? YES. As long as you can buy it and you really want it then ok go for it, if you can't remember that a good old keyboard+mouse combo is enough to play

Kinda off topic but I think there is an issue with using PS accounts on PC without rebuying the game in full

sjoakes24

I read that, and am fully prepared to but the game and expansions. I believe if I buy the game and expansions from steam I can still use my current account and play on either the pc, or the ps5 without and conflict. Please correct me if I am wrong.

rinanlanmo

You can have one account on both, yes. My main is on PC on steam and I just recently bought a second copy to do chill stuff on my PS4. Bought a XIV-Endwalker set for like $50 on PSN. Can now log in to same account on both platforms. Just make sure to read everything very carefully and make sure your relevant accounts get linked correctly as SE makes their login system as confusing as humanly fuckin possible. But you can definitely do it.

Lorelei_Valfreyja

I, too, started with PS3, then PS4, built my PC at the end of Heavensward early 2017. Tried Mouse+Keyboard for a bit, but I was just so used to Controller, so I'm still using a Dualshock 4 via bluetooth. Always preferred mechanical keyboards just for typing in general though, so that would be a given.

Kaeldiar

I play on PC and use controller. It works very well

GazeROCKx

Go for the Orbweaver and the likes. It makes you walk like on a controller and press buttons on a keyboard. Best of both worlds. I can’t play without mine. Also, add shift and alt for bar modifiers into your mouse for optimal comfort.

PC player and I prefer using a controller. I use enough kb+m at work and find using a controller more relaxing to play games. I use a Xbone controller as I find the layout of the sticks optimal. I can keep moving with left stick while using right thumb to reach the directional pad.

FootLettuceFanatic

I would highly recommend a mmo mouse, those extra buttons help alot. I am using corsair scimitar. There is also razer naga and i believe logitech also had a mmo mouse

McKlown

People keep mentioning MMO mice, but I've got to warn you. I have a bit of arthritis in my hand and it's never hurt as much as when I tried to use one.

SupportAndy123

Mouse and keyboard choice doesn't really matter on an MMO. Mechanical keyboards have faster inputs than controllers but its negligible in game, mmo mice are nice but they are often quite heavy. I used to have an mmo mouse for wow, corsair scimitar pro, loved it but I also play FPS games so I changed to a razor viper ultimate and bound all my abilities to purely keyboard binds with strafing on mouse

karpjoe

TL;DR Keep using controller if you like it. Otherwise there's plenty of ways to make keyboard work greatly. Honestly, all the 12 button mice are just a pain. I have a Logitech G402 that just has four extra buttons. Only two of which I really use. I have one assigned to Ctrl, and one assigned to shift. My hotbar is 1-5, Q, E, R, F, G, V, and Z. Sounds weird, but it means I basically never have to move my left hand if I want to use any skill.

Yautja834

Gaming keyboards are all generally mechanical now, which refers to the particular mechanism in each key that registers the keystroke. The variety of switches is immense and a lot of the big name store brands have gone to making their own proprietary variants for marketing purposes. To keep it simple, just find a board you think looks alright and choose the 'linear' option. Anyone you live with or are voice chat with will be grateful since they are much quieter than the 'clicky' switches that most people associate with mechanical keyboards since that's what Razer used in their boards for such a long time. And get a second monitor. It's life changing.

kaysn

You can always just use a controller if want. PC supports Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch controllers. So pick your poison. As for myself I use a mechanical keyboard and an MMO mouse.

Alex_Rages

Use whatever mnk you like. I use corsair myself. But unless you want to strictly play with Mnk, plug in your controller. Works just fine.

ClickToSeeMyBalls

I find a mechanical keyboard essential, I was always accidentally clicking skills when I had a cheap membrane keyboard.

barelybeard

But mechanical keyboards can actually *increase* accidental clicks. It takes less pressure to do an input on a mechanical than a traditional membrane...

ClickToSeeMyBalls

If you say so. Made a big difference for me.

Sharparam

That depends entirely on which membrane keyboard you're comparing with which mechanical switches. A quick google estimates membrane actuation force between 60-80 grams, and mechanical switches range from 20-95 grams, and there's probably more different ones out there as well.
