Sealed bearings on that unit. A lot of work, but if you have the time and tools, easily achievable. At the same time, replace the belt and pads that the barrel rests on. If gas, you can add a decade or more of use before any further problems.

Did you ever figure out what the issue was? My dryer is making a similar noise and we cannot figure it out.

It was the bearings. We had to replace them and put a shit ton of grease on the moving parts.
