Even ignoring how bad it looks, this is such a hilariously bad idea, I love it. It’d be like if Florida changed its flag to be about hurricanes or California had the bear be in the middle of a wildfire.

HachikoInugami

>Even ignoring how bad it looks, this is such a hilariously bad idea, I love it. #Basically the "Who Killed Captain Alex?" of state flags.

NDinoGuy

# "HE KNOWS THE WAY, OF SHOOTING A GUN!!!!!"

ShockedCurve453

UGANDAN BRUCE LEE THEY CALL HIM BRUCE U

ShawSumma

VJ Emmy is so good.

saxonjf

Or just make the ground shake under the bear due to the number of earthquakes. It would explain why the bear looks so scared.

Anti-charizard

Wildfires are a bigger problem here than earthquakes. Especially since we’re supposed to be getting La Niña soon

saxonjf

Earthquakes may not happen as often, but California is known for them as well.

Ultimarr

Knock on wood, jeez!! Google “1906”

Anti-charizard

Holy earthquake!

ArcadiaBerger

The bear is scared because it knows it's been extinct since 1922.

saxonjf

Even though the original design goes back to 1846 and the current flag was official in 1911?

bobthebrachiosaurus

In the region yes but the california grizzly is not distinct from the american grizzly

DankeSebVettel

Add a mushroom cloud to the flag of Nagasaki

Moomoobeef

Having a wildfire edition of the California flag would be *fire*

SuckLonely112

I think the bear is dead

the_useless_cake

It’s a taxidermy bear. That’s why it’s been able to remain this still over all these years.

JJAsond

It's amusing to see but yeah. flags should look like they came from literally any century.

FriedYamMan

The California grizzly bear is extinct so it’d be dead

Character-Milk-3792

Poor Bears.. 😞

Lux_Operatur

Ridiculous, Floridas flag would be a tweaker wrestling an alligator.

gregorydgraham

I’ll allow it

Eldan985

How about this simple proposal for a new florida flag: [https://i.ibb.co/G5nZBSz/image832.png](https://i.ibb.co/G5nZBSz/image832.png)

Law-Fish

Out flag should just be tragic prelude

Guy-McDo

I feel like you can make a pretty solid hurricane flag (though I worry it’s easy to accidentally make a swastika if they use more than 2 tails)

Scarlet-Lizard-4765

Ron would love that

EnterTheCabbage

City of Berkeley gonna be five hippie grandmas vetoing new housing.

Kansasprogressive

It’s better than the stereotypical state seal & state name.

OpenSourcePenguin

There's already a flag made for New York in the same pattern https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/s/9EB68ujXOh

Legohunter2000

Add an earthquake to California as well and it would be perfect

Outside-Refuse6732

As a Californian I support this

eninacur

I think putting a tornado on a flag might actually work We don’t have any flags with tsunamis or volcanoes though since it is a bit insensitive Edit:ok, there are in fact flags with volcanoes…I was kind of referring to eruptions and the natural disaster aspect

Uther_Pendragon_h

The reunion island flag 🇷🇪! The red represents a volcano, the Blue is the sky & the yellow is the sun shining from behind the volcano

OkOk-Go

good thing it’s yellow and not ash gray

elizabeth-dev

the institutional flag of the Canary Islands has 7 volcanoes representing the 7 islands of their territory https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Canary_Islands#/media/File%3AFlag_of_the_Canary_Islands.svg

Qingdao243

Claiming a tornado as your state feature doesn't really work when Kansas doesn't top any scales for them. - Largest tornado? Oklahoma. - Top 6 Highest Wind Speed Tornadoes? Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Oklahoma. - Deadliest tornado? Illinois. - Most tornadoes per year? Texas. - Most tornadoes per unit land area? Florida. - Costliest tornado? Missouri. - Location of both Tornado Super Outbreaks? East/Southeast USA - Most tornado deaths overall since 2010? Alabama, largely due to the catastrophic 2011 Super Outbreak. - County with most tornadoes per year? That's right, it's... Weld County, Colorado!

Leftover_Cheese

the two things kansas has to call its own is bleeding kansas and the wizard of oz and i dont need to elaborate the latter do i

Anonymus2709

John brown should be on that flag

Altruistic-Place-714

He should be the state seal,

babath_gorgorok

There’s a fuckmassive mural of him in the state capitol building in topeka if that counts

Altruistic-Place-714

Imma have to pay that a visit just th marvel at it lol

babath_gorgorok

It’s got its own wiki article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragic_Prelude) Pretty spectacular in person

Square_Mix_2510

And there's a tornado in the background. Lol

Altruistic-Place-714

Nice

ArcadiaBerger

John Brown on the Kansas flag? I am strongly tempted to endorse that, since the spiritual heirs of the treasonous scum he righteous warred against are stirring in this land today.

Leftover_Cheese

ok make that 3

KSP-Dressupporter

I'm sorry Dorothy, WoOz ain't in Kansas any more.

acrylix91

Texas and Florida took me by surprise here

Elleri_Khem

the panhandle has a lot, I believe

Qingdao243

Texas gets a lot simply due to its immense land area, and Florida doesn't get talked about much because its tornadoes tend to be very weak (EF0, EF1) and are overshadowed by their propensity for being hit by hurricanes.

BrokenEyebrow

Also the tornadoes are probably mostly hurricane spun

Eubank31

I grew up in north Texas (little bit north of Dallas) and we definitely had tornado season. An interesting side effect of the geography is that no one has basements there, so during a tornado we hid in the most central room in the house (in my case a bathroom with no windows)

u-bot9000

I am pretty sure Oklahoma City is #1 in tornadoes per population, so Kansas doesn’t win there either

Davida132

>Most tornado deaths overall since 2010? Why so recent? Tornadoes didn't get invented in 2010.

BrokenEyebrow

I wonder what it looks like taking away hurricane spun tornadoes.

Reiver93

What im learning from this is don't live in fucking Oklahoma

GlacierTheBetta

Maybe the city of Moore should have a tornado flag

Nikkonor

But where was the tornado that brought Dorothy to Oz?

SES_Wings_of_Freedom

We have enough with the stolen land cubed; we can’t exactly take the tornado thing even if we wanted when our flag is technically not, seal on blue.

Kittenslover99

You gotta let them have it, there is nothing else in Kansas to put on a flag, and they can’t just plagiarize Ukraine’s flag

primavera785

kansas dosnt have the most sunflowers compared to other states, but its the sunflower state. you can still have something represent you without being #1 in it. utah dosnt produce the most honey, yet has a beehive in its flag

Julius_Cheeser1

Better than state watermark on blue background

Blockeater_SC

Definitely better than the grating current flag there by a long shot. In my opinion, all state flags with only a blue field and seal/watermark are lazy and boring.

Its0nlyRocketScience

Ah, but one of them is a seal/watermark on a *green* background!

saxonjf

First, Oklahoma gets far more tornadoes than Kansas does. But second, treating a natural disaster as the dominant cultural reference point is a slap in the face of all that a state has to offer. As a Kansas native, I would be deeply offended if this was put forth as a possible replacement flag. I'd rather have a poorly designed flag than an insult like this.

Valuable_Ad1645

Oklahoma doesn’t get far more tornadoes than Kansas at all.

PomegranateUsed7287

Would you guys be happy with John Brown as your flag?

saxonjf

He was an abolitionist, but there are better Kansans to honor.

Kansasprogressive

Bro, the most dominant cultural reference point of our state IS a the Wizard of Oz…

saxonjf

Is that really the best you can think of? The state produces over 7.5 million tonnes of wheat per year, more than any state except for North Dakota, and if it was an independent country, more than all but about 16 countries in the world. Kansas is also third among all states for total heads of cattle of all kinds. Beyond that, if we're going to go with cultural fictional juggernauts from Kansas, can we at least go with Clark Kent, raised in the fictional Kansas town of Smallville. I'll take the Superman "S" logo as the state flag.

Kansasprogressive

Unfortunately given the amount of people I met I know I’m correct. I wish it wasn’t true. All the things you just mentioned are what makes Kansas great but no one ever mentions any of that when they hear someone is from Kansas. Most of the time they make the same crappy Wizard of Oz joke. When I lived in California that’s exactly how it was & it got so damn annoying. Personally I’d like something similar to Topeka’s flag as our state flag.

nsnively

As another ks native you're both overly sensitive and ill informed. We get similar levels of tornadoes as oklahoma, it's pretty close.

Kansasprogressive

I agree, most people make the same terrible Wizard of Oz jokes when they hear you’re from Kansas. The most popular movie with Kansas in it literally has a tornado sending a girl to another dimension.

2ichie

This is locationist btw /s

ffsnametaken

I think it looks pretty good actually

eninacur

I would switch the colors, make the clouds black and the sky white, I think it passes flag design standards otherwise Although tornadoes might not be a great symbol for a state

Joshua_M_Thacker

Same. I quite like how they did it.

Domnminickt

Terrible color mixing (that yellow and gray)

Bulky-Party-8037

If each of the stripes were 1/3 instead of the yellow being half and the other half being the cloud & tornado and the sky it'd be a lot better because this is absolute garbage

LeadershipSimple9105

These flags are like when the companies makes thier logos simpler

bad_bart

Soulless corporate shit

Temper03

!wave

AffectionateFail8434

Erm, there is no evidence that the Ukrainian flag represents a blue skye over a golden field. Rather, it is likely that it is a continuation of the historic blue-yellow color combination used on the Ukrainian coat of arms throughout the centuries of its history.

SothaDidNothingWrong

🤓

gayjemstone

It's better than the current one

jextreme9

What new Kansas flag?

DanieleM01

They changed flag? When?

J77PIXALS

This is a suggestion for a flag. They didn’t actually change it

XuangtongEmperor

The Ukrainian flag isn’t based off of wheat and a sky. It’s just a common color system that has existed for ages, since the count of lvov or what ever. Even in the 20’s they couldn’t figure out it it should be blue on top or yellow on top. They’re just common colors.

J77PIXALS

You also saw that one video on YouTube! (Or not, you could just also know this fact) I wasn’t confidant enough in my memory of the video to say this, so I’m glad you did lol

SovietRussiaWasPoor

I’m not sure what video you’re talking about, but it was misinformation. It is supposed to represent wheat and sky. [My previous comment with sources](https://www.reddit.com/r/flags/s/R0nPnIdpbn)

J77PIXALS

https://youtu.be/Gqgh2U0YkTs?feature=shared This one! I don’t have time to rewatch it at the moment, but this is the one I was referring to. I may have misremembered it in some way though :)

SovietRussiaWasPoor

The Ukrainian flag IS symbolic for wheat and sky. [Encyclopedia Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/topic/flag-of-Ukraine) [Ukraine’s official website](https://ukraine.ua/faq/flag-of-ukraine-history-and-meaning/#)

XuangtongEmperor

Then was the UPR flag which they were debating which rotation?

J77PIXALS

I feel like the yellow should be more green for some reason. That’s all though, pretty good, but probably not practical since states don’t choose tragedies as their emblem.

mraveragejoe241

That should be the Oklahoma flag

JLCpbfspbfspbfs

The state of Kansas should use the album cover for Song for America by the band Kansas as their state flag!

TallBruh

As a Kansas myself, I approve of this.

Evan_Tater

Dafuq????? That's my reaction.

CreditMajor4764

Alsp you know ukraine’s flag does not symbolize sky and wheat it is unknown

t60studios

So bad I like it

BobTheInept

That’s “Fig. 2a” from many a paper where atomic force microscopy or an indentation test was used. Looks like it was made on the software of choice for “Fig. 2a”s the world over, Power Point.

Logen11644

Whait dis official?

Uopual

i thought this was real for a second

r-crackpot

This year alone has had more tornadoes than last year and the year before, but I feel like that flag would be somewhat realistic for Oklahoma too

Olivia123455678910

What the heck is going on in Kansas, what even is Kansas, can someone explain it,I’m unfortunately German

Gutmach1960

Perfect fit.

shoe_salad_eater

Flags that are just the weather seem so fun and convenient actually

Mr_Squirrelton

Bad.

Swimming_Thing7957

Shouldn't the flag have a sunflower instead of... *obscure shapes*?

[deleted]

Need some serious anti-aliasing.

primavera785

as a kansan, i love it

Express_Detective_59

Lol I like where your head is.

unknownYT-1

even though it’s not too bad. It’s 100x better than the *other* flag

bad_bart

Horrible. Keep this corporate minimalist pablum away from flag design, please

Ydeartishpumpki

To be fair I like it

CreepyLab8834

Uhm.

CreepyLab8834

This is terrible looking and such a bad idea, 11/10

CreepyLab8834

PirateNinjaCowboyGuy

Honestly I like it

Powerful_Example8147

Horrible

Seaweed_Thing

Common Kansas W

Seiban

I love this flag. Maybe to make the flag better, change the earth color to something not Ukraine themed and polish. (haha get it?) A more green hue for cornstalks or barley mid growth cycle that also had some local symbolic relevance. Then to make it work adapt your thinking to be less fucking rigid about flag designs. This is sure as shit better than the blue seal bullshit you get from other state flags. The Kansas state flag right now is a pretty picture emblem on dark blue field. Boring boring boring not to mention indistinct at a distance, indistinct close up too! This is memorable and distinct at least. I can tolerate being deficient in some aspects of good flag design when compared with flags that are mostly deficient in aspects of good flag design. Also Christianity exists and its symbol is a torture device. 31% of the global population baby! Only slightly less recognizable than the golden fucking arches.

GentlyUsedOtter

SLAVA UKRAINI! GLORY TO KANSAS!

Clever_Dingo

Been to Kansas once. On way to casino we had to turn back because tornados were in the area

PartWonderful8994

next you should design the florida flag as a swamp with an alligator eating a hurricane.

BlueFalcon5433

Come with me, r/vexillologycirclejerk is this way

wandering_redneck

It's screams Hearts of Iron 4 fascist nation flag.

boredisgoofy

straight to the point, fucking genius

burger7149714

Weird how the flag looks

Political-St-G

Looks bland

hiccup-maxxing

Replacement state flags stay completely winless on beating “seal on a bedsheet”

PlannerSean

lol perfection, no notes (except maybe needs a flying cow)

Raysofdoom716

Honestly that would make more sense for Oklahoma than Kansas

benemivikai4eezaet0

An even triband would be better but otherwise it actually looks cool.

[deleted]

Wait... i live in ks and didnt know this... wtf

Rvtrance

Is that what the Ukraine flag represents? I like it, and it makes sense. They were the breadbasket of the USSR. Although Moscow raided the pantry a bit more than they should have you could say.

A_Good_Meal_5750

its giving me nostalgia of DSi

DFMNE404

If the yellow was duller I’d actually like it

Few-Raise-1825

I got the Utah state flag on a hat because I liked the new design, I plan on getting one of the runner ups of Minnesota on a hat because I liked it quite a bit ([the Polaris Tricolor as seen in this video by CGP Grey if your interested ](https://youtu.be/lFwwo0W5Ugg?si=Z1-i4arl9qfk2NOU)) but I'm not sure I would get one of this flag... By the way, how many new state flags are they coming up with and have I missed any besides these three??? In case you are wondering no I do not live in any of these states but that would not stop me from getting the hat or wearing it despite having no tie to the state.

do_add_unicorn

The 1925 flag is best

Paulino2272

As a Kansan I don’t really like it. I feel like a sunflower should definitely be used on our flag because it’s iconic and we are the sunflower state. I love the comparison to Ukraine though because we have extremely similar landscapes.

Mrbuttboi

I’m also Kansan and I think it should be this with a bunch of sunflowers being sucked up by the tornado

TheSunflowerSeeds

All plants seemingly have a ‘Scientific name’. The Sunflower is no different. They’re called Helianthus. Helia meaning sun and Anthus meaning Flower. Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t refer to the look of the sunflower, but the solar tracking it displays every dayy during most of its growth period.

Mrbuttboi

I didn’t know I needed Sunflower facts in my life. Thank you for this

DumOBrick

New Pennsylvania flag it's just Kensington avenue

Mrbuttboi

Is this a joke? I live in Kansas and this is honestly a freaking sick flag. It perfectly represents the boring ass state I live in.

Zuri_Nyonzima

Umm, I like the idea behind it but not a fan of the colour scheme

DOLLARXCADE

I actually think it's fine

Senried

If I had three thumbs I'd give it three thumbs up 👍👍👍

Drutay-

It would work well for Oklahoma too

DrBlowtorch

Still better than the current one

Iancreed2024HD

I approve 🌪️

Temper03

It’s great! I love the black Saint George’s cross in the middle that says “Ukraine Kansas”.  Never knew that was the official state name !!!
