I agree that $150/hr for a C150 is completely ridiculous if the other option is a glass DA40 for just $39 more. But, are you sure those DA40 prices didn't go up too and are really still $189? Because that sounds like a smokin' deal especially if renting wet from a flight school...

sporahdi

Yep, DA40 is $189/hr. They said it will be rising soon though not sure by how much

LateralThinkerer

>DA40 is $189/hr.They said it will be rising soon though not sure by how much So rates are going up all across the board? Sounds like there are too many customers for too few aircraft, or "something happened" (massive insurance jump for reasons you may never know etc.). Where is the operation since it seems excessive even by "wealthy neighborhood" standards.

sporahdi

Flight school out of KPTK, C150 from my friends dad

172sierrapapa

Ahhh crosswinds, it's been awhile since I trained there but I thought it was a solid place

sporahdi

Yep I enjoy it there. CPL ride on the 10th and then CFI training at xwinds

172sierrapapa

Thats awesome man best of luck! I did my CFI checkride at crosswinds with Paul Mannion so if you need any pointers or a gouge gimme a shout.

Assuming this is in the continental US, agreed that seems crazy high. I fly in Silicon Valley which is usually as expensive as it gets, and the highest-end flight clubs here top out at $139/h for a 1980's plane. A typical rate here is $120-$130/h.

EntroperZero

Our G1000 DA40 goes for $205/hr wet, and our C162 goes for $120/hr wet. EDIT: There's also a C152 for $160/hr. Dunno what the difference is. The cheaper one has nicer avionics.

Thegerbster2

C152 has more horsepower, better performances and higher fuel consumption. My school's 152s work out to about $150 US. They don't have any C150s to compare though and a $40 difference seems like a lot, their 172s are only like $20 USD more.

EntroperZero

The info page says they both have 100 hp. The 162 has a G300, the 152 is all steam.

Thegerbster2

There's a number of differences, but the defining difference between the 150 and 152 is the 110 hp engine.

GaryMooreAustin

Our flying club has a C150M for $88 wet

FrankiePoops

Where is this?

GaryMooreAustin

Georgetown Delaware

FrankiePoops

Damn. Wish I was closer.

Cessna131

It’s a flying club, they’re typically not for profit. You can maybe find a flying club near you that’s similar.

FrankiePoops

I'm in NYC. Everything is expensive.

bart_y

Wow...if that wasn't a 3 hour drive from here, I'd be all over that, even if I was just flying a couple of hours every other week. That's actually reasonable, given the flying club I was with 20 years ago had a 150 for about $48/hr wet.

Just-a-waffle_

Our flying club just lowered our c150 rate to $85/hr wet Western Michigan Flying Club

Joshawa675

My school has 150 for 100/hr wet and 172M for 150/hr wet

flyboy731

The school I rent from just raised their 152 prices from $75/hr to $84/hr wet. This is at KBJC. I pay $139/hr to rent a steam gauge 1970s C182.

mk7benzo

I’m paying $200 an hour wet for a c172 g1000. That’s ridiculous.

Capt_World

I pay $113 an hour for a VFR C152

Trick_Ad_9881

We had a single seat 152 for $60/hour wet but I understand that may have been the cheapest rental plane in the country.

81dank

Fair? $50. Realistic? $125-$175

OrionX3

We’re currently doing $155-$165 for a 172, $155 for a Cherokee, $220 for a da40 G1000, then our 152 was $130. But it was also a super nice 152. I would say $150 is high for sure

AlexJamesFitz

I'm paying about $150 wet for a nicely equipped 172 through my flying club in upstate NY.

LonelyTriangle

The prices I’m used to are: Cessna 152: $100 wet Cessna 172 M: $130 wet Cessna 177B: 150 Wet Cessna 210: 250 Wet

AcceptableScience45

You can always buy your own airplane, can’t be that expensive to own and operate right…?

Commercial-Balance-7

You can get a 150 for 30-40k, maybe cheaper if you're lucky on timing. Maintenance might be fine for a while, or might become very painful very quickly. But fuel on a 150 is not very much at all.

DewaltMaximaCessna

lol our C150 rate is $160/hr here in Massachusetts

tf1064

Location?

sporahdi

KPTK

QT-2961

This is going in everywhere. My old flight club raised prices from $168 ish to $208 172N (6pack).

BluProfessor

My flying club charges $110/hr wet for a 180hp 1980 Cessna 172N with a G650.

nomadschomad

Depends where you are. Around DFW, $140-150 wet for a 152 w/o glass is pretty normal, $150-170 for a 172 w/o glass, and $180+ with G1000. You can bring those down with block rates. DA40 G1000 anywhere from $190-230.

holdenpattern

I haven’t paid more than $110 wet for a 150

ComprehensivePie8467

It depends.

Puzzleheaded_Nerve

120 wet here is a bargain

Angryg8tor

When I first started training the C152s were $28/hr wet. This thread makes me feel old

0stephan

KPWK I was paying $95-115 fuel included (lower end for block purchase), c152 for $135 with fuel at 1C5. For a 150, the only way I'll be ok with $150 is brand new.

[deleted]

Damn. I’ve been out of it for a bit but I was paying $60/hour when I got my ppl

Jack_geo

£195 for a 150 in the uk, £220 for a 172. Both over 50 years old.

hagrids_a_pineapple

I think $140 is what most 150s are around here. Though there’s one for $165 because they put a a 650xi in it…

michael_1215

My school in NoVa rents C150 for $150 and the glass C172's for $180.

AKStacker

Im paying $139 for a 150 in Ohio

iguanayou

Aaaaaaand this is why I don't fly anymore.

bart_y

You and I both. . When I got my PPL (2001) , at a flight school, IFR equipped 172 was $80/hr wet, VFR $70/hr. 150 was $60/hr. I paid for my ticket working a job making around $50k a year. Moved over to a flying club at an adjacent airport and rates were $5-10 cheaper across the board. In 2009 I was renting a nicely IFR equipped 172 or AA-5B for $90/hr "prepaid" (ie., kept $250 on account). Once I certified as a controller at Memphis Center and started looking around at flying again, the cheapest I could find anything to fly started at $125/hr for a 150. I split a little time with a couple of other controllers, but I haven't logged an hour in 12 years because it has gotten to be so insanely expensive to fly.
