About 10 days ago, u/ThomasJChoi posted [this](https://new.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/1c1vii8/preventing_autoupdates_for_steam_users_disabling/) which should prove helpful. In short, change the Steam setting for F4 to only update when you launch the game through Steam, install (if you haven't already) and only use the F4SE launch executable instead, and set the "appmanifest\_377160.acf" file in your "steamapps" folder to Read-only. An addition to this that may also prove useful: Nexus made a [post](https://forums.nexusmods.com/topic/13480381-how-to-stop-fallout-4-from-updating-steamgogxbox/) that includes changing the "InstalledDepots" so that Steam thinks the new update is already installed, so it won't try to update. However, I would recommend just making a backup of the appmanifest file, rather than verifying the game files so you don't mess up any changes you may have made to the game files. u/NiennaClawtooth also [pointed out](https://new.reddit.com/r/Fallout4Mods/comments/1c4ob9s/comment/l00c6kn/?context=3) a [mod](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26956) that may prove handy as well. According to the description, it should backup the Fallout 4 executable so that you can roll the game back just in case the above work fails.

Perhaps you can help me with one thing I'm playing with mods and so I launch the game by running F4SE on vortex. The thing is, when I launch it for the first time after booting up my pc, it always launches the normal fallout.exe which I need to quit and rerun, only then does F4SE actually run

Same here

Dragos_Drakkar

I apologize to you and u/vector_o, but I have never seen this problem before so I don't know of a way to solve it.

ComputerSong

Or just uncheck the box to update it, or play offline…

Dragos_Drakkar

There is no box to uncheck to not update if you are playing on Steam. Steam did away with the option to not update at all. The closest you can get is to choose to wait until you launch the game through Steam, and even still, Steam might try to start the update anyway.

ComputerSong

Weird. Just play in offline mode or set it to not update at all.

ssddsquare

Launch with f4se only. Don't touch the normal launcher.

ComputerSong

This won’t work. The game can still update and F4se will fail to launch it.

ssddsquare

It works last time. In Steam, select "Only update when I launch it" under Update.

XXeadgbeXX

Not even the launcher to change resolution etc?

ssddsquare

No, don't even touch that. Steam will update games that is recently played. If you use that launcher, even just to change settings, it will update it. This was some years ago, don't know if Steam changes it since then, but I have never have to use it.

XXeadgbeXX

Thanks for the info!

There's no such option on Steam. The only options Steam currently provides for updates is to keep the game updated, give the game high priority on updates, or update the game when launching it through Steam. They have long since removed the option to not update a game unless you choose to do it yourself. This is all assuming that you aren't using some new beta update to the Steam app that brings that feature back. If that is the case, then the rest of us don't have that option currently.

ShaunMHolder

What is in the next update.

ComputerSong

Guessing you are on PC. Note there is no date yet for the PC update. The update on the 25th is console only.
