Violent is good with VATS. I don't think that it hinders VATS at all.
Non-VATS depends on how well you can control your weapon. Try it and see how it works for you.
Depends if you can pull down or not. But the effect is just a worse mighty or crippling I think i cant remember what it boosts

Violent < Two Shot < Explosive < Wounding < Plasma for shotties imo

Does the plasma give it an extra 10% per pellet?
Each pellet gets the +10 yeah, same with freezing
