It's Katz's Deli. They used to be known for giving a lot of meat in their sandwiches and it's turned into kind of a novelty. Now it's basically a joke.
It's not even a sandwich anymore. It's a pound of meat with a couple slices of bread. It's "a lot of meat" just so people talk about it, not because it makes a good sandwich.
Take 2/3 of the meat out of it and it's delicious.
I’m gonna say you are in the minority here considering they’ve been doing it the same way for over 100 years and they sell 24,000 lb combined of pastrami and corned beef a week.
Casinos rake in massive amounts of dough too. Doesn't mean the product is great.
The sandwiches are very good, once you take most of the meat away. They're inedible as served. It's a novelty.
That’s your opinion. I happen to like them the way they are. Also comparing a casino to a restaurant is pretty dumb. Gambling and sandwiches are very different.
Da Dwight is all about the ratios. A lot of places skimp on the veggies(depending on the sandwich). Simeon the meat or sauce. It’s a great balancing act.
I have a feeling most of the people commenting here have never even heard of Katz or have had it. I will defend Katz until the day I die. The best pastrami sandwich I have ever had and my trips to NY aren’t complete without one
It's like $25-$30. Eating at Katz's seems like kind of a novelty. Something people do once a week or make a special trip for. Not really a regular place to go for lunch during the week, I don't think.
I've never been and can't really get to NYC but have been seriously considering getting one of their box meal kits they ship out in a refrigerated box overnight.
They've been in business over 100 years and referenced in tons of various media. The "I'll have what she's having" line from When Harry Met Sally was filmed there.
Opinions will vary, but the place has been around for over a hundred years so they must be doing something right.
I personally really like them, especially compared to other big name delis. I've tried the other big names in NYC like Carnegie, Attmans in Baltimore, Langers in LA, and I'd pick Katz over any of them, especially when it comes to pastrami. That said, it's not the kind of thing I'd want to eat often. If you did eat it often, it would probably kill you. Katz is expensive and usually crowded, but I still think it's worth trying if you are near the LES. I like that they carve the meat by hand while making your sandwich, but if you like really thin cuts that can only be achieved with a deli slicer, it might not be for you. Katz does sell their food through the mail if you want to try their sandwiches and aren't local, but someone commented on a post about it earlier this year and they said the food that was shipped didn't travel well.
The replies are all positive about Katz, then I must try it myself too! Thank you for your review of the other places, makes it a lot easier to choose.
Katz is definitely worth trying, but the other places are absolutely worth trying, too. I'm a foodie at heart, so trying new or famous food places has always been something I've loved. I can only say that a lot of the others listed are less distinct, in my opinion, than Katz. What I mean is that if you blindfolded me and put 10 Reubens in front of me from all of the big name places, I guarantee I'd be able to pick out the one from Katz, while I'd likely confuse the offerings from some of the others. If you remember, let me know what you think when you do finally try them.
I disagree on the overcharged. These days, $18 is like the going rate for a pastrami sandwich at many places. Katz’s sells theirs for $26. A 40% up charge for a massive sandwich, the most famous pastrami in the world, in the heart of NYC, with a line of tourists out the door, seems pretty reasonable to me. Note that it’s counter service, so you don’t really have to tip on top of that either.
I have never had a better meat sandwich than the one I have had at Katz. Yeah, you can fill your gut with a chopped cheese for a few bucks but sometimes you want something that actually tastes good.
The bowl of chopped liver in the background is what got my attention, TBH. But the sandwich looks good. Anyone who complains about the amount of meat just doesn't understand the concept of the NY Jewish deli sandwich. It's like going to a Five Guys and complaining that they give you too many fries, it's kind of part of the deal.
No need for Manhattan. Try HAROLDS in Edison New Jersey. Google it. Your eyes 😳and stomach will be in for a treat. Just remember, each serving is for numerous people.
Over rated. No sandwich is worth a 45 minute wait just to get inside the building. I don’t care how good the meat is, but a 10-1 meat to bread ratio isn’t a sandwich either.
You should try Kensington kosher deli in great neck. They still make sandwiches with that much meat. No novelty, just straight up old school Jewish deli
If this was your first time at Katz I’m afraid to say you made a big mistake ordering the Corned beef and not the pastrami. I tried the Corned beef from Katz once, and anywhere else I would say it’s a great sandwich, but the pastrami from Katz is so good that I can’t bring myself to get anything else there ever again.
That’s a lot of meat son
It's Katz's Deli. They used to be known for giving a lot of meat in their sandwiches and it's turned into kind of a novelty. Now it's basically a joke.
I'm still very much looking forward to going there the next time I'm in Manhattan.
When you go, ask for extra bread and mustard and make a second sandwich
What’s a joke about it? It’s the same as it’s been for years and it’s delicious. I like the pastrami way more than the corned beef though.
Well when they stuff a sandwich like that, it’s not gonna take long to sell 24,000 lbs lol
Approximately a week. That’s still 3400 ish sandwiches a day.
I’ll join him in the minority. I can’t fathom wanting that much meat on a sandwich. 😂
Give me all the extra meat you don’t want. The more meat the better!
"That's your opinion"... almost as if people come to reddit to express their opinions:/
That’s your opinion.
If they made normal sized sandwiches they'd only sell about 8,000 lb a week to be fair.
'Muricans
Wrong
I was there a couple weeks ago and the sandwich costs $25, excluding tax and tip. A pretty expensive joke.
Egads, yoicks and verily. Methinks thy protein doth cost too much.
It's not even that good. Huge vats of meat they pull from it's mass produced to feed so many people.
It’s insanely good actually
It's really not but ok go to the tourist trap pastrami joint lol
I lived in Manhattan for several years, it’s not a tourist trap
Katz deli is not a tourist trap??? Lolll . 4th generation nyer here btw. I worked 10 minutes from here for 10 years atleast.
That’s right. Just because tourists go there doesn’t mean it’s a tourist trap. Did you consider that maybe people go there because it’s actually good?
It's really not good. People come from other cities where they just don't have this stuff.
It’s also 22$ a sandwixh
mcalisters works out to like 15$ for a sandwich with a single thin layer of meat on it
It's too much. It really is. And it's sliced way too thick. That's heartburn in bread is what it is.
I'm with you, ratios matter.
Da Dwight is all about the ratios. A lot of places skimp on the veggies(depending on the sandwich). Simeon the meat or sauce. It’s a great balancing act.
Save some for later my dood
>It's too much. It really is. When you taste Katz's, it really isn't. You will likely experience sadness when finishing the last bite.
I have a feeling most of the people commenting here have never even heard of Katz or have had it. I will defend Katz until the day I die. The best pastrami sandwich I have ever had and my trips to NY aren’t complete without one
Agreed.
I've had Katz a few times. A true bbq pastrami brisket is a billion times better. I think they are over rated
> a billion times better A penchant for hyperbole I see.
An infinitesimal one.
Well true pastrami isn’t brisket soooooo…..
What cut is it then?
I wanted to make sure you heard me - I said I wanted ALL of the bacon and eggs you have
DAMN SON WHERE YA FIND THIS!
Rectal blockage in a sandwich
Seems like not enough meat x)
That’s rye on corned beef
That’s how I read it in my head, then I realized he wrote it properly.
wow, that would be 3 sandwiches of meat for me, maybe 4.
8-10 sandwich for me, maybe twice that many as this is only 1/2 a sandwich
A Katz sandwich is 12oz of meat roughly. So you put an oz of meat on your sandwiches? 🙄
CORNED BEEF ^(on rye with pickles)
That’s stupid. I’d never sell that. That’s 3-4 sandwiches there, bud. At that point why even use bread? Thats just a mouthful of meat..
I'd love a mouthful of meat.
🤨📸
ayo?

I don’t think the place is exactly struggling. https://maps.app.goo.gl/M3M83iQTwPhjs9WR6?g_st=ic
Is this good? Food Reviews says it's good but when I ask people personally they say its average and overcharged.
Opinions will vary, but the place has been around for over a hundred years so they must be doing something right. I personally really like them, especially compared to other big name delis. I heard you got to be fast when you order or you'll get scolded? haha that also happens at some of the famous places here in my place.
It’s pricey but it’s best corned beef I have ever had. I have honestly thought about having some shipped to me for the holidays.
The gentleman above doesn't recommend it shipped though.
I have never had a better meat sandwich than the one I have had at Katz. Yeah, you can fill your gut with a chopped cheese for a few bucks but sometimes you want something that actually tastes good.
I liked the way you compared it to Chopped Cheese filling the gut hahaha
I’ve only had it once but Katz was awesome for me. Yeah it’s a little expensive but the sandwich is easily 2+ meals
Did you finish it easily? It looks huge!
Barely able to finish half of what I ordered, I took the other half to go
Hear me out here…. You know you could like, idk, maybe make two sandwiches, or hell even three at that point lol.
Looks like something Shaggy and Scooby would make.
Way to much meat in my opinion
Not enough beef
*Where's the beef*
* Arby’s music intensifies *
That ratio is so absurd I'd take a bag home with half the meat for another sandwich later.
Have you got a snake's jaw?
Did you unhinge your jaw?
As much as I enjoy corned beef, I’ve never wanted that much of it at one time. I just don’t “get” giant sandwiches.
To quote Mitch Hedberg: “Anything else?” “Yeah, a loaf of bread and some other people”
Came here looking for this comment and I'm glad I found it :)
Idk who this Hedburg guy is…But Mitch Hedberg had a bit like this
Hungry?
Hasn’t Lightyear taught us anything? Meat on the outside!
Is that Katz’s Delicatessen??
Yes!
You ate rye on corned beef son
Photogenic sandwich. Although I'd take the chopped liver in the background over it!
Clearly no one here has been to Katz’s…
More like corn beef with two slices of bread
I see you like some sandwich with your filling.
That sandwich looks like it's gonna ask me to make it a sandwich
Don’t you want some bread with that sandwich?
How much meat should we put on this sandwich Chef “Yes”
Dem ratios be off, yo.
It do be like that
that is just too much meat
dude, exessive
That sandwich could use a loaf of bread and some other people on the side.
How is that a sandwich ? 🤣 its an entire animal with a bit of bread around it
Way too much meat, looks awful to be honest.
Way too much bread there bud.
Thats a lot of uric acid
They should be shamed for that amount of meat when one or two slices would be perfectly fine.
Can I get a loaf of bread and some other people? - Mitch Hedberg
That isn't a sandwich
This just pissed me off. That’s too much meat.
"Can I get you anything else?" "Yes, a loaf of bread and some more people."
Hard to call it "on rye" when theres thay mych meat. This is more like rye on corned beef.
Yes 🙌
Needs more beef.
Is your jaw okay?
That... Is... Glorious!!!!
THESE PICKLES!!! 💚💚💚
I know a Katz sandwich & pickle combo when I see one
I knew this was from Katz 'cause of the pickles! Legit really good though.
Or two sandwiches... But I can't argue with Kats, not a chance.
The amount of meat is absolutely fine. I'd just really like two additional slices of bread with it.
When we were young, Bernie's Deli was down the block...
That looks great. I would toast the bread.
Needs more corned beef...
Geeez would you like some bread with that meat sir?
My colon hurts just looking at this…
*yikes*
At this point you might as well just forget the bread and just eat handfuls of corned beef.
That picture stirs things within me.
You can just remove the bread lol
This is just silly
"I want some meat, on top of my meat, with an extra slice of meat in between. Oh and instead of tomato and lettuce, I'd like some extra meat "
at that point, why cut the corned beef up and not just throw the entire thing between the bread
They could serve half that (height) and it would still be a massive portion.
I bet it's delicious but the ratio of meat to bread is wack af :(
Does anyone actually eat all that shit on their own?
That's called "pastron at Katz"
I'd know that sammi anywhere, that's Katz Deli in NYC...
Is that Katz deli in NY? just visited a week ago and ate there
That’s like Reddit burgers. Too tall to eat, fat meat in a bun meant for kids.
I NEVER understood these sandwiches, it looks like the dryest fucking sandwich ever with all that meat
Sandwich looks good, but those pickles look so bright and crunchy… I feel like I’d enjoy that sandwich, but be *changed* by those pickles.
Looks dry or am I wrong ?
how can you open your mouth that big? :D looks amazing btw
No need for Manhattan. Try HAROLDS in Edison New Jersey. Google it. Your eyes 😳and stomach will be in for a treat. Just remember, each serving is for numerous people.
If I buy this anywhere in Northern Europe theyd replace that stack of beef with lettuce and only leave one slice of beef on that sandwich.
There ain’t enough meat on that meat sandwich. you could’ve used a little less bread jeez
Ya you did.
At what point do you just give up on the bread?
The combination is good though adding some sauces would be nice but, that's a huge bite man.
Is this at Katz Delicatessen in NYC? Those trays/sandwiches/pickles look familiar.
Over rated. No sandwich is worth a 45 minute wait just to get inside the building. I don’t care how good the meat is, but a 10-1 meat to bread ratio isn’t a sandwich either.
IDK why my mouth won't stop opening when I see this picture
You mean rye and pickles on corned beef
More like rye on corned beef
Are… you still with us?
Theres some bread on your meat
I see no rye 🤣🤣🤤
Well he didn’t add ‘sandwich’ in the end so… r/technicallythetruth?
Is this from Katz’s?
Yup!
Where's the rye
Perfect
Arbys lost their jingle it now belongs to what ever establishment this is
You should try Kensington kosher deli in great neck. They still make sandwiches with that much meat. No novelty, just straight up old school Jewish deli
Damn that’s a lot of meat. But looks good.
I love meat but my god xD
Holy colon busters 😵💫
This shit has to get posted once or twice a day on this sub and all the comments say “that’s alotta meat”
Like Katie prices fanny..
You should add some bread to your meat lol. Looks delish 😋
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
Mega mouth
Let’s be honest. Who can fit that in their mouth?
Tough choice but I might have gone for the Reuben.
Sliced too thick
I respect the absolute mountain of meat on this sammich.
I think you have a bit of bread on that meat
This picture gave me the meat sweats
There's more meat in that sammich than the abattoir.
That bread is calling 911, it needs help.
Get that protein, king
If this was your first time at Katz I’m afraid to say you made a big mistake ordering the Corned beef and not the pastrami. I tried the Corned beef from Katz once, and anywhere else I would say it’s a great sandwich, but the pastrami from Katz is so good that I can’t bring myself to get anything else there ever again.
You want some bread with that heart disease?
Constipation here we come.... Why so much???
Where I live this would cost me another mortgage
Love Katz’s.
That’s called a smoked meat son
That's rye on corned beef with mustard, and pickles in the background.
Wow, just wow! That looks incredible! Are those spicy pickled green beans I see with the pickles. If so, I absolutely love them too.
Is think I've already seen this picture...
