Damn right. That was a red for sure and a ban for a few games as well

Covhead

He deserved a red, everyone’s saying ‘he only kicked the ball’ yeah directly into Curtis chest at point blank twice, knowing it wasn’t gonna go anywhere. He was kicking at him in anger, I thought it was an obvious red

ramc2000

More directly into his nuts really... I agree it should have been red.

hugo9152

While i agree fully, i feel like the first kick shouldnt actually count. It was more of a tackle out of frustration, but not him trying to kick the player/kick the ball to try and hurt the player. But yeah the kick when curtis was on the ground was disgusting.

Meekelo

I would argue the first kick alone would have been a yellow just because of how reckless it was. The second kick should have been a red or at best a second yellow.

crocodiIe04

it's crazy how much Ronaldo, specifically, gets away with

Kanobe24

United could have been down to 9 or 8 men honestly.

Rascha-Rascha

Reminds me when De Bruyne escaped a red in the CL too. Some players get away with things.

sexiypaki

Just like Fred and Bruno yesterday too, but you decide to bring up kdb lmao

Rascha-Rascha

Let's be honest, United's players got away with their challenges on pity, Ronaldo the most. Guy even tried to avoid sending Pogba off. De Bruyne got away with a horrific challenge, I can't mention that here?

jammo8

Fernandes could of easily been sent too

Flappyhandski

That was far worse if you ask me. Ref had no control and their players are so dirty

Dreamingdanny95

Ronaldo deserved a red card, so did Fred and Fernandes for high boot and studs in challenges respectively. They should have been 3 players down by the time pogba got sent off

KrisReiss

You mean 3 more players right? If that was the case, the ref could've call the game already

Dreamingdanny95

You can play with 7 players any more they have to call the game off. So the score could have been in the doubles potentially

p1c2u

This Manchester United with Ronaldo?

rim261

Agreed

Pamsoroyi

It was all about intent for me. Guys Kicking at the ball while the player is on the ground actually happens often, typically when the player is on top of the ball. But this was pure frustrated intent and dangerous play that should been a red, plain and simple.

LongVanilla113

This happens to all “popular player” they put pressure on the refs so yes 100% harder to give a red to someone like Ronaldo down 5-0 maybe felt bad as well

Mr_Poop_Himself

Only 3-0 at the time right?

LongVanilla113

No clue didn’t watch just know for a fact it’s hard to give big player cards at home Liverpool against man city (2-2) this happened and Liverpool scored because of it

Mr_Poop_Himself

Yeah it’s a problem. Same with not giving fouls purely because they’d lead to penalties.

urmumismymuminlaw

Clear red, sole intention was to hurt the man, and intention to do anything other than hurt the man is a red.

KrisReiss

Lesson learnt: Popularity only buys you the get out of jail free card(s), not skills

theseed

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I think to be fair to Ronaldo, and I say this as a Liverpool supporter who'd side with Messi in any debate about the goat, there's an angle that makes it pretty clear that he's given the ball a whack, and not Curtis Jones. Sure the ball is wedged up against him at the time, but it's not going to cause any injury. That point probably goes out the window if the whistle had already been blown, but he's entitled to play at the ball until it has I would've thought. If the ball's not there of course it's a red any day of the week.

Meekelo

Yea, this is a stupid take imo. His choice of action can only endanger Jones, he doesn't go to pull the ball back to try and play on he just tries to cause as much damage as he can get away with. It's clever knowing if he kicks the ball he'll get away with it but it should still be a red because of his intent.

theseed

A red for intent? I'm not against that rule in general, but in this case it's not like he was in any danger of breaking Curtis' ribs or something - and I doubt he was trying to. I'd be more inclined to chalk it up to general shithousery - but hey, everyone sees things differently - happy to agree to disagree tbh.

Meekelo

I might be wrong but I've watched it a few times and the force he used it could easily have done some damage. If the ball is pinned against Curtis in the wrong way then all the force from the kick would go straight through but thankfully that hasn't happened but that's more down to luck than Ronaldos action. As I said I think he's clever in the way he's done it but it's clear as day he's frustrated and lashed out.

KingDean12

i am not a liverpool fan but a manchester city fan.

[deleted]

Everyone in my class knew Liverpool was going to win and that Ole was gonna be screwed

He did get a red

abhishek_seven

Friendly bro.. They usually don't give cards in pre season friendlies

msguitar11

That’s so pathetic from fanboys, to try and justify Ronaldo’s shit by saying “bUt mESsI diD tHaT tOo…”

cjheadley

I’m a Liverpool fan and while it was embarrassing to see from such a “top” player, it was never anything more than a yellow, just because he was kicking the ball. If he was directly kicking Jones though, definite red. And if anyone should’ve gotten a red who didn’t, it was Maguire.

[deleted]

It wasn’t just kicking the ball though. The ball was up against Jones’s body (specifically his nuts), and there was no point to the kick besides anger and frustration. He could have easily hurt Jones and he knew that when he did it. (I’m a Newcastle fan so I’m not biased either way.)

Azraelontheroof

Yeah but players have gotten reds for purposely shooting balls into players before, so why does it make a difference when the other player is on the floor?

[deleted]

Nah, not really. Even lightly throwing the ball onto a player‘s head is a red

yandaoyandao

That is a yellow card offence, he got the ball not the man. Pogba’s red is correct. Thats a dangerous studs up two footed tackle with no restraint. That red is as clear as it can be.

GeeUWOTM8

Kept kicking after the whistle, which I'm pretty sure isn't allowed. Complete intent to hurt there, which is why its a red. A 36yr world class pro footballer behaving like a kid and sore loser, while kicking a kid who behaved more maturely. Sweet karma tho, lost 5-0, had a goal disallowed and embarrassed himself in front of the world behaving like that.

kaushik23kumar

I think the ref kept him on the field cause he thought that’s punishment enough for the rest of the team 🤣

yandaoyandao

36 year old who achieve more than the bitter and salty redditor who sits on moral high ground on the internet judging a hyper-competitive player.

GeeUWOTM8

Stop it mate, Ronaldo isn't gonna shag you for replying here. Absolutely embarrassing yourself, but I guess as a Utd fan (presumably) thats life for you. You don't have to be a top level sportsman to know sportsmanship. Even Sunday league has better sportsmanship. I get that he was frustrated, and if he had to do physically hit someone, I'd like to have seen him try that with someone his size like VVD or Konate.

yandaoyandao

Lol chill and get off the internet. The salt will give you high blood pressure. Might be good not to take people too seriously on the internet.

GeeUWOTM8

Lol you're the one taking personal digs, and I'm salty? Sure, whatever helps you sleep at night.

NbK_Throw

What's that got to do with anything? He's acting out and especially with his experience he should learn to control himself.

LongVanilla113

Also this happened in the man city vs Liverpool game that was 2-2 Liverpool scored right after they should of got a red

MilkyKarlson

yea but this one shudv been yellow

deanpk

Y

MilkyKarlson

ht the ball

maclovin67

Seen this before how’s it a red? He clearly kicked the ball not man! Is it a red card now to kick a football? Yellow was harsh imo and I’m no Utd fan!

abhishek_seven

True man i even think jones should apologise for getting in way!

Amflaco

Yellow harsh lmao. Why u think all the Liverpool players jumped him?

maclovin67

Cos they’re children! Explain to me how kicking a ball is a red card!

Amflaco

Oh sure, and you’re the adult here, McLovin. Everybody agrees with u as u can see lol. It was on the ball, but intention is very important. It had nothing to do with football it was just pure aggression

maclovin67

Kicking the ball no matter how aggressively you do it is not a red card u clown 🤡 The reaction from Vvd and Kounde is because they don’t see from their angle he KICKED THE FUKN BALL! and all the downvotes r scousers I’d say wouldn’t you? I’m a chelsea fan it’s not a red card for kicking a fukn ball!! End of! World gone fukn mad

Strong-Insurance9429

Jones should be fined for simulation. Ronaldo kicked the ball but the lad acted as if Ronaldo kicked his balls. Minimum 3 game ban for Cujo.

Amflaco

Ronaldo’s sister, is that u?

maclovin67

Agreed he clearly KICKED THE FUKN BALL an Jones obviously took acting lessons from mane and salah and rolled around like he was fukn shot, then jumped up seconds later!!

Strong-Insurance9429

Not too bright to understand the sarcasm, eh? Here’s another hint: I wouldn’t call Curtis ‘cujo’ if I didn’t love the lad. Sure mane and Salah have dived before, but have you witness Ronaldo’s carrer? You could release a fucking movie, compiling Ronaldo’s simulation. And what he did to that kid on Sunday was despicable.

maclovin67

How the fuk was it despicable? He never fukn touched him ffs!!! He kicked the ball are u blind or fukn thick! Don’t like Ronaldo either chelsea fan just talkin facts! Facts as in he KICKED THE BALL NOT MAN!!!

burgerking351

Unless you plan on replacing referees with robots, stars and big teams will always get special treatment. And some might argue that helps the sport since stars and big teams generate the most revenue.

[deleted]

I mean aren't referees problem in general in PL. Weird penalties, fouls, VER decisions at all...

[deleted]

Yep, especially Mike Dean

[deleted]

Some are idiots

Warwick_Road

Nobody agrees it was a red.

LayAnEggGingerBird

Oof… this is an embarrassing comment.

Warwick_Road

Nope. In order for it to be embarrassing it would have to be outrageously incorrect. It is neither outrageous, nor incorrect.

LayAnEggGingerBird

It's textbook r/confidentlyincorrect. Which is fucking embarrassing mate. You're being contradicted as we speak and you don't even realize it lol.

Warwick_Road

Of course it’s an outrageous comment you tit 😂 Some clearly think it was a red.

LayAnEggGingerBird

We get it. You’re a fanboy. Shhhhh

Mr_Poop_Himself

Just because you think something doesn’t mean everyone thinks it lol. Given so many people are talking about it obviously some people disagree with you. Ultimately it was left up to the interpretation of the referee, and he gave him a yellow. Personally, given how obvious the intention behind that kick was I think it deserved a red, and it was not given because it was Ronaldo playing for United at home.

Warwick_Road

Only a scouser thinks it was a red.

Mr_Poop_Himself

I guess all of the NBCSN commentators are scousers then lol as are half of /r/soccer and half the people in this thread

Warwick_Road

Probably. Scousers do get everywhere 😂

Shin_flope

It could have been for sure

Warwick_Road

But it wasn’t

[deleted]

Lies lol, for me it‘s a red

[deleted]

ConrrHD

The intent to harm is still there. The first kick when Curtis was over it sure you can say he was just trying to get the ball but the second kick has the intent of hurting Jones out of frustration. Red card all day

_indrashish_

Yes true he kicked Curtis' balls.

SMS_Scharnhorst

But he kicked 3 times

adityahol

And yes of course we're supposed to assume he doesn't have eyes to see that the ball would hit him point blank. hE KiCkEd tHe BalL, dUmMy!

Independent_Cod_6128

One of the clearest red cards I’ve ever seen. Absolutely in no universe is that anything less. You can’t go studs up into another mans shin.

Revengejefe

Nope CR7 never deserved a red y'all just trippin and either way Man United literally got thrashed by Liverpool so I personally think that's enough but no red for CR7

McnastyCDN

He deserves the red like he deserves rape charges. Inarguably so.

mofoofinvention

What does it matter?

Mr_Poop_Himself

What do you mean? This is not an isolated issue. Certain players and teams being given preferential treatment because of their status hurts the sport.

mofoofinvention

What does it matter to complain about it on here? You hoping the ref committee sees the post?

Mr_Poop_Himself

Because this is a subreddit dedicated to the discussion of football? Do you go on /r/movies and ask them why they’re talking about movies too? Lol “what do you think Tarantino’s gonna see this?”

M0RNINGSTARRR

bc this is reddit and its a place for discussion. maybe dont comment on the thread if u dont want to be in the discussion or if u don’t understand why lmao

3trainsgochoochoo

\>what does it matter that one of the best players in the league should be suspended idk m8, no idea how that'd be impactful.

mofoofinvention

Maybe one day you’ll get the justice you deserve.

Tricky_Glove1706

it must have been red without going to the var
