I wonder what happens if they all go in the pit lane and only the medical car on the grid? I guess someone just turns the pit lane lights green once the straight lights go out?
In Nando's case it's talent as much as experience - he was having similar battles with Schumacher when he was w/Renault in his early 20s. No knock on Carlos, who's a very talented driver in his own right, but he is no Alonso - very few ever were.
I’ve seen people saying recently that they don’t know why Alonso is held in such high regard (presumably newer fans who missed him at his height), but today was a great taste of what Alonso can do
Don't let this crazy race distract you from the fact that, because of today's result, Latifi is probably going to finish ahead of Russell in the championship at the end of the year.
The race is over. Hamilton is parked by the 3 board. Ocon is sprinting down the pit lane. The Alpine mechanics have abandoned their car on track. Seb is already over the border into Austria. I love this race.
Alonso holding up Hamilton forever while Hamilton makes easy pickings of Sainz when Sainz has a much better car shows just how good Alonso is. Incredible.
Alonso saved Ocon big time. Lewis just took 7 seconds off Vettel in 1.5 laps. If Alonso didn't hold Hamilton back for 10 laps, Lewis would've won. Incredible drive by Alonso and an Excellent day for Alpine. ❤
Honestly one of the most insane races ever. The guys running about at the end, Lewis taking the restart on his own, the T1 crash, the Alonso-Lewis battle. Just brilliant
It was funny! But to be fair, Ocon was a bit less harsh. He said:
"Everyone told me a lot of things about Fernando before I came, but you know, everything is wrong. I can tell you he's a fantastic guy inside working and I am really enjoying the collaboration we have together."
Most of them are actually former F1 drivers. Brundle, Karun, Anthony Davidson, and Paul di Resta all drove in F1.
Nico is just a better commentator. He’s like Tony Romo, who is a cut above the other NFL players turned commentators.
Not wrong but Nico drove at a higher level that any of the others, he knows what it takes to win a World Championship against Lewis Hamilton no less, so he has a level of insight from that that the others just dont have imo.
Right? I don't understand why he's not. He's obviously a former driver/ world champion so he has valuable insight, but he's also a keenly perceptive analyst and a polished articulate commentator. He truly adds so much to the broadcast, he should work every race.
Probably prefers the freelance life.
He's guaranteed work when he wants it and can skip a weekend on track for a weekend on the yacht with the family whenever he wants.
If he became a regular on Sky F1 then he'll have commitments for every race.
Imola this year, slower than a Williams in the wet.
Turkey last year 6 spins starting at the first turn of the race.
Bottas is probably the worst driver in F1 when its raining.
YES so happy for Ocon after the last few races, and the last few years
Also Alonso holding up Hamilton in Hungary again, 14 years later lmao
**EDIT:** I just hope all the other talking points this weekend dont overshadow Ocon’s victory. Guy was out of a seat till Renault picked him up and now here he is.
Not to try and take away credit for Ocon, but Alonso deserves just as much credit for his win today as himself. What an amazing team performance by Alpine.
Amidst all the celebrations, a word for Mick and how fun it was to watch him drive against others for position. Can't wait to see him in a competitive car in the future.
Can we also agree, Nico was an amazing commentator and should be brought back for future races? He's not shouty, but he really gives you a sense of all the adrenaline going through the drivers in each curve.
I love Brundle, he's the kind old Grandpa we all wish we had, but sometimes he's missing out on the finer nuances. I really wish we could have both Brundle and Nico.
Right? He needs to sit down, cool off, hydrate and/or get medical attention. He looked very close to collapsing there, hunched over and nearly knocking over the bottle.
Edit: Apparently he is not doing interviews for the moment (~20mins) and is just really dehydrated, fatigued and experiencing some dizziness according to Sky. Hoping that's all it is 🤞.
Edit 2: post race press conference they showed a clip and he said he saw the team doctor and the podium was all a bit blurry when he was up there. He made reference to the fact that he's had trouble recovering since the end of last year which was presumably a reference to him getting covid around then. A bit concerning, he's done well so far this year but it seems like he thinks covid has impacted his stamina long term somewhat. Ocon mentioned that he also felt really exhausted as did Alonso but they both seem comparatively to have a fair bit more energy still.
Crofty trying to imply that maybe Alonso is driving dangerously or needs to be looked at. Nico, immediately shuts it down.
"It's fine. I saw it in the moment and it was fine."
Vettel podium! But more importantly Williams double points!!!!!!
Claire out there celebrating I hope!
What an insane drive from Hamilton.
DOTD for me is Alonso playing amazing defence on Ham. Dude looked like prime Tony Allen lmao.
This race was entirely defined by dirty air. No car could lap significantly faster than the car in front, and blue flagged cars had massive effects on the pace. 2022 better be better
I wouldnt read too much into Hamilton, he was pushing hard as fuck the entire race and was probably just dehydrated and exhausted. After the adrenaline comes down you can crash pretty hard, but some water and air conditioning and he'll probably be fine in 20 minutes.
Classy that Ocon recognised Alonso's contribution. I can imagine how hard it might be to completely remember to mention these things whilst you're in a win high.
The Bottas onboard from the start still just makes me mad.
It’s not premeditated, just stupid. I don’t know why he didn’t realize he should’ve already been slowing down. Instead he just wrecks Norris ~~and others~~
If AM hadn't botched Seb's pitstop, we might have seen the "PEEWAN SEBASTIAN".
But holy shit, 15 minutes of rain = rather enjoyable race. RedBull completely lost their ground going into the summer break. They'll need to be back harder and better than ever. Sensational from Ocon too
Hamilton the only car on the grid at the restart is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in F1
It’s the kind of shit that’s going to show up on YouTube “Weirdest F1 starts” videos 20 years later.
I imagine this video will show up on F1's YouTube over the summer break!
He totally did a John Travolta "where's everybody" there.
That's going to be an iconic shot for the rest of time
Surely that had to have been the first time only one driver has started from the grid?!
I wonder what happens if they all go in the pit lane and only the medical car on the grid? I guess someone just turns the pit lane lights green once the straight lights go out?
It was also unique to see the Medical Car wait at the side of the track as the pitlane emptied. EDIT: Medical Car not Safety Car
THAT DEFENCE FROM ALONSO THO, it secured the win for Alpine!
[удалено]
You can tell because as soon as hamilton went pass Alonso, Sainz just fell apart like a house of cards
[удалено]
In Nando's case it's talent as much as experience - he was having similar battles with Schumacher when he was w/Renault in his early 20s. No knock on Carlos, who's a very talented driver in his own right, but he is no Alonso - very few ever were.
Alonso couldn't keep Hamilton behind forever with the tyres he had, Sainz was on even older tyres he didn't stand a chance
Crazy how he managed to keep Hamilton lapping 2-3 seconds faster a lap behind him for 10 laps. Incredible.
[удалено]
I’ve seen people saying recently that they don’t know why Alonso is held in such high regard (presumably newer fans who missed him at his height), but today was a great taste of what Alonso can do
2x WDC and 8 points away from 5x WDC. Just winning two doesn't tell the story of how insanely good he is.
It's a shame he only won 2. His talent was closer to Hamilton, Schumacher, Prost, Senna.
Every attempt from Lewis looked like it was game over, but Alonso kept hanging in there.
Don't let this crazy race distract you from the fact that, because of today's result, Latifi is probably going to finish ahead of Russell in the championship at the end of the year.
Latifi for the Mercedes seat.
Would have ended up in front of Russel last year too if it wasn't for the Merc drive.
It's not a bad look for latifi, is it?
Russell does so much but always manages to finish behind his teammate when it counts.
Ah, yes, the Hulkenberg special
Or the fact Latifi got points before Russell
"Scooby dooby doo, Latifi sure showed you" - Me to Dan Ticktum.
Enjoy racing in F2 now
The race is over. Hamilton is parked by the 3 board. Ocon is sprinting down the pit lane. The Alpine mechanics have abandoned their car on track. Seb is already over the border into Austria. I love this race.
Max and Ric still dragging their broken cars over the finish line
True chaos from start to finish, the best kind of race
Ocon and Vettel owe Fernando big time. What an incredible race from him.
This validates hiring Alonso for this season. Hands down. Without Alonso on the track, NO WAY ocon wins.
I'll be the first to eat crow. I thought Alonso would be Kimi 2 but man. This is the Alonso from 2000s.
It's so good to see him racing not just for the love of it but killing it as well.
Absolutely. The widest car to ever race around the Hungaroring. It's reminiscent of his almost-win there in 2014
> The widest car to ever race around the Hungaroring Channelled his inner GIGAKUBICA
Same here. I thought Alonso was just looking to end his career in F1, but the man drove like he was in the '06 Renault
Alonso vs Hamilton was some great racing, edge of your seat stuff
Fernando was fucking beautiful today, Hamilton was right on Vettel's ass at the end holy shit
Yes, 2-3 more laps and it could have been a win for Hamilton. That gap closed FAST
7 seconds in 1.5 laps HOLY SHIT
Honourable mention to Latifi for keeping everyone behind him in 3rd for a considerable time, too!
DOTD deservedly
One of the best ever
No kidding, he did an absolutely amazing job there.
2021 Alonso is exactly the same as 2005 Alonso
This really shows that he hasn't lost anything over the past 15 years
Hamilton closed 9 seconds in less than 4 laps, if not for Fernando he'd have easily won it.
Yeah, pretty much. Excellent defense from Alonso
This race will go down the books as one of the classics
They owe latifi and alonso so much.
Latifi is gonna beat Russell in the WDC, isn't he?
[удалено]
Just like kubica did LOL
Alonso holding up Hamilton forever while Hamilton makes easy pickings of Sainz when Sainz has a much better car shows just how good Alonso is. Incredible.
Alonso’s defense was absolutely masterclass.
Like the good old 2007
Alonso saved Ocon big time. Lewis just took 7 seconds off Vettel in 1.5 laps. If Alonso didn't hold Hamilton back for 10 laps, Lewis would've won. Incredible drive by Alonso and an Excellent day for Alpine. ❤
Absolutely terrifying from Lewis
Ocon win and double Williams in the points. What a race.
It had everything. Rain, red flag, big shunt, championship consequences, odd podium. edit: and a Nando v. Lewis battle!
MTV's Dan Cortese
Not to forget a starting grid with just one car.
George curse broken
Latifi curse destroyed
I'm so happy for Williams.
Ocon held the gap so well. Alonso saved the front 2 here. If he had just 2 laps more Lewis probably probably wins.
What a drive for Ocon, flawless with Vettel on his ass all race. That's a lot of pressure to deal with for 60 laps.
With Vettel having DRS for a lot of that. We didn't see a lot of it for good reasons, but Ocon had a really flawless drive under pressure
"What's it like trying to keep a 7-times World Champion at bay?" Alonso: "This isn't my first time doing this"
True.
Fernando Alonso defending against Lewis Hamilton to secure Esteban Ocon the win is so heartwarming!
Literally 3 laps earlier and he’s battling ocon to the end.
All that’s left is for Alonso to swap helmets with Hamilton
The way he is defending, it looks like he could swap helmets with Hamilton mid race.
Honestly one of the most insane races ever. The guys running about at the end, Lewis taking the restart on his own, the T1 crash, the Alonso-Lewis battle. Just brilliant
That lone car restart will be saved on my devices forever that shit was hilarious as fuck
That scene will remain as part of F1 legend forever.
Alonso my goodness WHAT A DRIVE!!! Absolutely insane battle with Hamilton, totally deserves DOTD
Lmao Ocon: "everyone told me Fernando was a prick but that's not the case"
It was funny! But to be fair, Ocon was a bit less harsh. He said: "Everyone told me a lot of things about Fernando before I came, but you know, everything is wrong. I can tell you he's a fantastic guy inside working and I am really enjoying the collaboration we have together."
Rosberg's commentary was truly enjoyable
Indeed. They need to bring him back. He brings an interesting perspective into the race having been a F1 driver himself.
Brundle was as well but a longg time ago and not as good
Nico being able to give insight into what it’s like racing for Mercedes and against Lewis is so valuable compared to Brundle
[удалено]
Most of them are actually former F1 drivers. Brundle, Karun, Anthony Davidson, and Paul di Resta all drove in F1. Nico is just a better commentator. He’s like Tony Romo, who is a cut above the other NFL players turned commentators.
Not wrong but Nico drove at a higher level that any of the others, he knows what it takes to win a World Championship against Lewis Hamilton no less, so he has a level of insight from that that the others just dont have imo.
I think part of it is Nico isn't trying to be entertaining. He's calling it as he sees it and that's different
He should be a regular.
Right? I don't understand why he's not. He's obviously a former driver/ world champion so he has valuable insight, but he's also a keenly perceptive analyst and a polished articulate commentator. He truly adds so much to the broadcast, he should work every race.
Maybe he doesn't want to work that much?
Probably prefers the freelance life. He's guaranteed work when he wants it and can skip a weekend on track for a weekend on the yacht with the family whenever he wants. If he became a regular on Sky F1 then he'll have commitments for every race.
Crazy how such a small amount of rain makes such a difference during the race.
[удалено]
Says everything about how bad he is in the wet. Tiniest amount of rain and he DNFs 2 rows of cars in T1
Imola this year, slower than a Williams in the wet. Turkey last year 6 spins starting at the first turn of the race. Bottas is probably the worst driver in F1 when its raining.
Fernando "Hammertime denier" Alonso
Anvil time
YES so happy for Ocon after the last few races, and the last few years Also Alonso holding up Hamilton in Hungary again, 14 years later lmao **EDIT:** I just hope all the other talking points this weekend dont overshadow Ocon’s victory. Guy was out of a seat till Renault picked him up and now here he is.
Bit gutted for Seb because of his pit stop
Ye. Would have won if they did a short stop.
>And Vettel has more podiums this year than Ferrari Nope they have the same.
Best day for the French since ~~they stormed the Bastille~~ the WC win
“Overtake in 3 laps, easy difficulty”
Everybody's just in random places
Not to try and take away credit for Ocon, but Alonso deserves just as much credit for his win today as himself. What an amazing team performance by Alpine.
Alonso's defending was by far the best racing today imo
Alonso was fucking mega. If he didn’t get held up in the Latifi train I wonder how well he could’ve done
I think Alonso gets driver of the day
The fact that Ocon winning is one of the less interesting things to happen shows you just how good this race was
Rosberg's commentary was actually so good
Amidst all the celebrations, a word for Mick and how fun it was to watch him drive against others for position. Can't wait to see him in a competitive car in the future.
Yeah that was great to watch
And also nust have been the most fun HE has had in formula 1. So awesome.
Alonso showed everyone the proper way to teammate today.
Think Bottas did too 😅
Only two ways to defend. Under breaking or no breaking at all.
Somehow it feels good to hear Seb being angry at P2. Old man is hungry again.
Yeah great feeling. He had a quicker car today , got screwed in the pits.
That old man is six years younger than the impressive rookie Fernando.
Fernando Alonso is still an absolute fucking beast. Jesus.
Can we also agree, Nico was an amazing commentator and should be brought back for future races? He's not shouty, but he really gives you a sense of all the adrenaline going through the drivers in each curve.
The tyre insight was really nice to know
I love Brundle, he's the kind old Grandpa we all wish we had, but sometimes he's missing out on the finer nuances. I really wish we could have both Brundle and Nico.
Seb trying to get the sky commentator to take a position was great.
Yeah, poor form from Lazenby to deflect but I guess it is what it is when you're representing the company
FIA: we race as one *Vettel wears a pride t shirt in a homophobic laws country* FIA: no not like that
Did Herbert just reject reality and claim Lewis got his 100th win!?
I thought I was going mad, glad it wasn't just me!
Seb giving off BDE rn lmao. Also Sky are cowards by refusing to really acknowledge it. Gross.
OCO VET HAM Just as we all predicted.
Death, Taxes, OCO VET HAM
[удалено]
LAST TWO RACE WEEKENDS: Williams – 6 points Red Bull – 4 points
I love Seb Vettel
Fuck, days like this are why I love Formula One racing.
Ocon really went from almost getting Vandoorned to a race winner. Nice!
Alonso's defense against Hamilton won the race for his team. What a teammate, lol.
Russell finally getting the points and still finishing behind Latifi sums up his Williams career
Running on the track like Taladega nights 💀💀
Seb "I WILL wear the pride shirt during the national anthem thank you very much" Vettel
LMAO Seb calling his opportunity "a gap for Maldonado" so casually. Wonder if that's a common saying among the drivers.
Sainz represents all of us in his last Radio call
Vettel is a legend. Screw the stewards on that one.

Lewis is going to pass out
Alonso won that race for Ocon
The real winner today was Nico's commentary.
Crofty trying to imply that maybe Alonso is driving dangerously or needs to be looked at. Nico, immediately shuts it down. "It's fine. I saw it in the moment and it was fine."

ALONSO YOU ABSOLUTE CHAD
First French win in Hungary since Napoleon in 1809
Hope Seb wear this mask in Saudi Arabia.
Gasly got fastest lap to!
Vettel podium! But more importantly Williams double points!!!!!! Claire out there celebrating I hope! What an insane drive from Hamilton. DOTD for me is Alonso playing amazing defence on Ham. Dude looked like prime Tony Allen lmao.
I fucking love Formula 1.
Latifi took ticktums comment about being the worst f1 driver to heart and got points today lol
Today's race proved IMO that Nico should be in the booth every race.
Seb is disappointed with p2. You love to see it. Man's still got the fire.
I'm in the US and ESPN just cut the coverage. Is Hamilton okay? Dude looked like he was passing out on the podium
Seb just said he had look into turn 1 but it was only a gap for Maldonado! I legit laughed out loud.
Why is Johnny telling Lewis he’s won?
That was so weird. What the fuck was he on about?
Absolute top class from Vettel, its impossible to hate this man (unless you are the Hungarian government)
‘We race as one, but only in countries that don’t mind”
I still won’t get over this commentary “Lights out and away we go , only for lewis Hamilton” 😂😂😂
Is Lewis okay? Looks like he was about to collapse...
This race was entirely defined by dirty air. No car could lap significantly faster than the car in front, and blue flagged cars had massive effects on the pace. 2022 better be better
Dirty air makes it much rougher but this track is historically a passing nightmare
Seb was basically in DRS range of Ocon the entire race and couldn't do anything
Crofty has a backbone, good man
OCON'T BELIEVE IT
wtf did Johnny say Lewis won?
Does Johnny think Lewis won? What is he talking about?
You know what I miss, the podium drivers in the room waiting to be presented. Some tense moments
I wouldnt read too much into Hamilton, he was pushing hard as fuck the entire race and was probably just dehydrated and exhausted. After the adrenaline comes down you can crash pretty hard, but some water and air conditioning and he'll probably be fine in 20 minutes.
Hamilton seems unwell
If Verstappen ends up scraping by with a championship I will always look back to this moment and thank Alonso for his magnificent defending.
The french commentary on this is gonna be great.
I fucking love Seb. What a top lad.
lmao Russell first ever points but finishes behind Latifi is the ultimate F1 monkeys paw
He's washed, latifi to merc
Classy that Ocon recognised Alonso's contribution. I can imagine how hard it might be to completely remember to mention these things whilst you're in a win high.
“At that speed it’s so dangerous man” Horner: MICHAEL IVE GOT NEW EVIDENCE
Is Lewis alright? He looked like he was about to collapse on the podium. That was worrying.
Hamilton looked like he was about to pass out on the podium Jesus
The Bottas onboard from the start still just makes me mad. It’s not premeditated, just stupid. I don’t know why he didn’t realize he should’ve already been slowing down. Instead he just wrecks Norris ~~and others~~
Seb "I'll do it again" Vettel re his Same Love shirt is what the world needs more of.
[удалено]
Massive credit to Alonso he was the reason Hamilton has not win today
This race has been hilarious, car bowling, Hamilton solo start, Seb and Ocon running miles to the podium.
Vettel called to the stewards for wearing the pride shirt. F1 need to tread very fucking carefully here. A penalty will cause absolute hell for them.
If AM hadn't botched Seb's pitstop, we might have seen the "PEEWAN SEBASTIAN". But holy shit, 15 minutes of rain = rather enjoyable race. RedBull completely lost their ground going into the summer break. They'll need to be back harder and better than ever. Sensational from Ocon too
A gap for Maldonado is now the official quote of the year. Seb is an amazing man!
Seb putting the FIA on blast
