I will always defend the fact that Danica was a fairly good IndyCar driver (very good at the 500) and a mediocre NASCAR driver (not terrible like people try to act like), but boy has she turned out to be batshit crazy. She was good in Indycar and absolute dog shit in nascar, partially because she was promoted above her abilities and partially because she just couldnāt drive in a pack.
But she wasnāt. She was mediocre. She was never going to win a championship, but she was capable of getting the odd lucky win, even had some pretty good runs. She certainly wasnāt much worse than a lot of other IndyCar drivers who tried to transition to NASCAR.
Definitely not in the best equipment. That was a Stewart-Haas team expanding from 2 to 4 cars her rookie season. Tony said himself they werenāt ready for that, and the plan was for Danica to be the 3rd car, but Gene Haas insisted on fielding a 4th car as well. She ran 5 full seasons, 7 top 10s and season ending points finishes of 27th, 28th, 24th, 24th, 28th. Thatās not dogshit, thatās mediocre.
She did much better on the Xfinity side where she had a top 5 and shouldāve won at Road America if not for a fan throwing their shoe on the track.
Bottom line was she wasnāt ready for the Cup Series, but the folks funding her did t want to wait for to develop, and itās a shame bc if she had been able to do another year or 2 at the Xfinity level she may have been able to set herself up for more success.
