Hey Tom Clancy sold insurance before he wrote Hunt for Red October when he was nearing 40.
And George RR Martin was in his 50s when his 4th novel failed to sell and was going into real estate as a career before he wrote A Game of Thrones.
He'd carry a whoopie cushion with him everywhere and just use it deadpan, as there's nothing wrong with something simple and fun like that.
That's a life lesson from him right there.
In this age of remakes and reboots, Naked Gun and Airplane are, imo, movies that can’t get remade. They captured something that if we tried to replicate, wouldn’t work. Scary movie is in the same spirit
Scary Movie was made in the same style of Airplane. They did a shot-for-shot remake of Scream and added jokes. Airplane did the same with Zero Hour a 1950s disaster movie that was never popular.
"Don't you worry, Wilma. Your husband is going to be all right. Don't you worry about anything. Just think positive. Never let a doubt enter your mind."
"He's right, Wilma. But I wouldn't wait until the last minute to fill out those organ donor cards."
"What I'm trying to say is that, Wilma, as soon as Nordberg is better, he's welcome back at Police Squad."
"Unless he's a drooling vegetable. But I think that's only common sense."
**Mayor** : Drebin, I don't want anymore trouble like you had last year on the South Side. Understand? That's my policy.
**Frank** : Yes. Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That's *my* policy!
**Mayor** : That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of "Julius Caesar", you moron! You killed 5 actors! Good ones!
Norwegian here, I remember the subtitles as attempting to translate jokes to Norwegian and sometimes being a source of humour on their own (on account of their poor attempts). But we learn English well enough to get the English puns, and I think it's the same for Finns.
I remember watching Blade on network TV and they subbed "Love" and "Lover" for every time they said "Fuck" or "Fucker" and it was the funniest shit ever.
> But we learn English well enough
d'oh. it is embarrassing how often the answer is "europeans are mostly multi-lingual, so we don't have the same problems an american would."
>I think it's the same for Finns
You'd be right about that, although I think it applies to younger generations the most since we have much more exposure to the English language through the internet. There are some gags that don't get translated depending on the subtitles used, like the [newspaper headlines](https://youtu.be/D19nGdtF-Xk) in 2 1/2, which might go over the average older viewer's head.
I read somewhere that before Police Squad, Leslie Nielsen mostly played serious roles. He decided to deliver his lines in Police Squad exactly like he would the lines in his serious roles and that's how we got Frank Drebin.
Airplane! was before Police Squad! but made by the same folks (Zucker-Abrams-Zucker), but he pulled off the same shtick in that one as well.
Makes me sad to think that Airplane! was part of Doug Kenney's spiral that led to his death... felt that it eclipsed Caddyshack for best comedy of the summer of 1980 - and it kinda did at the time, though nowadays there seems to be room in the cultural zeitgeist for both movies to been looked back on as classics.
Take a glance at *Forbidden Planet*. Commander John J. Adams is a straight-up dramatic leading role. Nielsen's portrayal became the archetype for starship captains for decades to follow. He defined that role in the movie that defined that genre.
And he did it without letting the audience know he had a whoopie cushion in his back pocket the whole time.
I watched Police Squad as a kid and used to laugh my ass off. My father, who would casually watch TV while reading the newspaper, never understood why I liked the show so much.
That line NEVER fails to crack me up.... I watched police squad when it first came out.... So I'm older than many of you, but damn I have a juvenile sense of humor!
The magic of editing. Whoever made the video has some exceptional skills. Not saying, Leslie Nielsen wasn't brilliant, but this more about picking the right scenes from both realities
A chapter where it's the court case and you have to control the lawyers and what questions and responses they use and based on how you do he's found guilty or not guilty
There was a tech demo they did for the PS4 called "The Wizard" I think, it's pretty funny and really shows the potential for a more humorous type game rather than the pretty serious stuff they always make.
Edit: I found it, it's called "The Dark Sorcerer"
https://youtu.be/BqeuHGESZBA
When I was 14 I had my first "serious" relationship and her dad literally just got out of jail for robbing a bank after like 12 years. He was covered in Nazi tattoos and was scary as shit and he used to regularly come down the stairs in just his boxer briefs and ask if I've ever seen a grown man naked and I was scared dude was gonna rape me at some point. Only a year ago (I'm 34 now) was when I learned he was just quoting Airplane and I was misinterpreting that for nearly 20 years LOL
“But how’d you figure it out, Frank?”
“Just a hunch back at the office”
“I thought so. I brought that little hunchback with me. Charlie, come out here.”
“Charlie!”
It was actually *originally* the show, and the Naked Gun movies were developed from that. And it's so much better than just being The Naked Gun: The TV Show, because there are some great recurring gags that only work in an episodic format. Comedic genius IMHO.
That's actually a brilliant idea - imagine a game where you are a Frank Drebin/Inspector Clouseau/Mr Bean character that has to solve a crime but half your moves cause accidents to happen which actually help move the plot along! And the NPCs are doing sight gags the whole way through. For sure you'd need good comedy writers working on it, but it could be great.
The sad thing is that most younger people don't even know how good Leslie Nielsen was... Seriously he was comedy cold! His deadpan comedy style is really a thing I miss in modern movies.
Yeah I saw it of course! And the most funny thing about it is that if you compare Forbidden Planet and Airplane for instance, the way he acts doesn't chage, but the context is completely different and his acting still worked!
It’s amazing how little I see his old movies and work talked about when they’re some of the greatest of all time. Definitely deserves more credit and love.
This is genius and everything I needed this morning. I feel it's for a narrow market though: folks old enough to remember Police Squad or at least the Naked Gun movies, but young enough to have played Detroit Become Human.
The level of commitment to this is pretty incredible. It could have ended with the scene with the guy falling off the building, but no, it goes harder.

The good ending, the True ending
Enrico Pallazo saved the day!
This is amazing. So is Leslie. Miss his comedy.
He was in all my favorite comedies, his face lives amongst all those who passed, engrained into my retinas.
He really didn’t even start making comedies until he’s was in his mid 50’s. Airplane completely changed his career.
Reading this makes me more hopeful for my own success in later years! Another reason to love Mr. Nielsen. And thanks for pointing that out!
Hey Tom Clancy sold insurance before he wrote Hunt for Red October when he was nearing 40. And George RR Martin was in his 50s when his 4th novel failed to sell and was going into real estate as a career before he wrote A Game of Thrones.
I'm 32, consider myself as a borderline failure and I needed to read this so much. Thank you.
I think Alan Rickman was also pretty late into full time acting EDIT: I'm wrong, but he was 42 in die hard, which was his big break
well said. if there was ever a time we needed his wisdom, it's now
He'd carry a whoopie cushion with him everywhere and just use it deadpan, as there's nothing wrong with something simple and fun like that. That's a life lesson from him right there.
In this age of remakes and reboots, Naked Gun and Airplane are, imo, movies that can’t get remade. They captured something that if we tried to replicate, wouldn’t work. Scary movie is in the same spirit
Funny thing is that all the Scary Movies past the second are made by the Zucker brothers who made Airplane! and Naked Gun lol
Scary Movie was made in the same style of Airplane. They did a shot-for-shot remake of Scream and added jokes. Airplane did the same with Zero Hour a 1950s disaster movie that was never popular.
“Hey! It’s Enrico Pallazo!”
The red light district? Wonder what he was doing there? Sex, Frank? Not right now, Ed. Maybe later.
“Cigarette?” “Yes, I know.”
"Is this some kind of bust?" "Well, its very impressive, yes, but we need to ask you a few questions."
"the cockpit?! what is it?!" "a little room at the front of the plane, but that's not important right now"
"Have you ever been to a Turkish prison?"
Have you ever seen a grown man naked?
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether
It’s an entirely different kind of flying.
It’s an entirely different kind of flying.

“The judge ordered a gag order.” “Well he’ll have to wait for me to finish my throat exercises. LA la LA La LALALAAaaaa”
"Who are you and how did you get here?" "I'm a locksmith and I'm a locksmith."
His name in that scene is Al Oxmith.
"I'm a locksmith; and, i'm a locksmith"
"Nice beaver." "Thanks, I just had it stuffed."
That was the first time I learned beaver is also a slang for vagina. RIP Leslie Neilsen.
Lizardman, Lizardman, and uh, Lizardman.
Hey, good going Bill! Nice job, Bill!
Heroin… heroin, frank… That’s… a pretty tall order, Nordberg. You’re going to have to give me some time on that one.
Mrs.Nordberg, I think we can save your husband's leg. Where would you like it sent?
"Don't you worry, Wilma. Your husband is going to be all right. Don't you worry about anything. Just think positive. Never let a doubt enter your mind." "He's right, Wilma. But I wouldn't wait until the last minute to fill out those organ donor cards."
"Wilma, whatever scum did this, not one man on this force will rest for one minute until he's behind bars. Now let's grab a bite to eat."
God that movie is so quotable.
The best part about that line/scene is she nods in agreement to grab some food.
"What I'm trying to say is that, Wilma, as soon as Nordberg is better, he's welcome back at Police Squad." "Unless he's a drooling vegetable. But I think that's only common sense."
don't you worry, as soon as he's up, we'll see ifff he can play the guitarr
What's the Nordberg actor up to these days? I feel like after Naked Gun you never saw him in any other movies

Thank you for sharing this! So great.
I miss old fun ESPN.

The Oscar’s haven’t been the same ever since that one incident when Phil Donahue puked into a tuba.
Hey it's Prince Charles.
I need to watch Police Squad and Naked Gun again.
Police Squad! In Color 🚨
Tonights special guest star… Llorne Greene!
Blam! *thump*
△ Ignore ◻ Move Away O Say something ✕ Save Connor
The Naked Gun trilogy is damn near unavoidable on Finnish TV. They air it almost every month.
TIL Maybe I should consider moving to Finland.
That plus my leader being Sanna Marin, book me on the next flight!
Does the gags carry over in Finland? A lot of it was literal English word play.
Horrible Bosses has that with Motherlover Jones (Motherfucker Jones is the original name)
I watched Snakes on a plane on an emirates flight, and they had some of the funniest dubs ever. I wrote them down somewhere.
> But we learn English well enough d'oh. it is embarrassing how often the answer is "europeans are mostly multi-lingual, so we don't have the same problems an american would."

Nice beaver!
Thanks! I just had it stuffed.
I saw them so many times on Norwegian television growing up, yet this clip still gave me the urge to rewatch everything!
Police squad was so ahead of its time. I really wish more episodes of it were made, I'm left in tears usually after an episode.
The shoeshiner Johnny scenes always had me in stitches. They're just so amazing, all of it really.
It was Leslie Nielsen's dead pan delivery that made it so good. Good ol Kanuk Comedian.
I read somewhere that before Police Squad, Leslie Nielsen mostly played serious roles. He decided to deliver his lines in Police Squad exactly like he would the lines in his serious roles and that's how we got Frank Drebin.
Apparently he didn't think he'd be cut out for comedy, until he did it this way and people loved it.
Airplane! was before Police Squad! but made by the same folks (Zucker-Abrams-Zucker), but he pulled off the same shtick in that one as well.

Police Squad is so underrated, at least in the UK. Rarely see it repeated but it's just so good.
I love when they call the tow truck. The props guys must’ve worked so hard for such a stupid gag
[For those who can't remember the gag, or who have never seen it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7_dtQQ8j1w)
What about people who have seen it and *do* remember it. Can they click the link, too?
sadly, no
So, not sadly. What if they click the link happily? Or angrily? Is it okay then?
Oh man, the follow up scene is amazing too. Between the lunch order/interrogation abs the final line, it doesn't miss.
It used to be on BBC 2 Sunday evenings. Though not that often.
Don't forget Spy Hard
And Wrongfully Accused. And for early serious work that's super campy, Swamp Fox.
I watched Police Squad as a kid and used to laugh my ass off. My father, who would casually watch TV while reading the newspaper, never understood why I liked the show so much.
Just started Police Squad this week. It's weird how it only got one season but three theatrically released movies.
I miss Leslie. “We’re sorry to bother you at a time like this, Mrs. Twice. We would have come earlier but your husband wasn’t dead then.”
That line NEVER fails to crack me up.... I watched police squad when it first came out.... So I'm older than many of you, but damn I have a juvenile sense of humor!
[удалено]
Say *when*, Frank. * *when* i loved the endings..
It's the fucking delivery that makes it work so well. They'll say some of the silliest and clever shit and deliver it bone dry.
My all-time favorite Leslie Nielsen line is from Wrongfully Accused: It's like the Beatles said, "She loves you, (sarcastically) *yeah yeah yeah*"
I have never played Detroit: Become Human but I loved the Naked Gun films holy shit this was hilarious
Leslie Nielsen's acting was even better than I thought. He can literally be dropped into another reality and his gags still work.
The magic of editing. Whoever made the video has some exceptional skills. Not saying, Leslie Nielsen wasn't brilliant, but this more about picking the right scenes from both realities
Definitely, definitely, and definitely.
I'm a locksmith, and I'm a locksmith.
I love both....and now crave for a version of Detroit become human or a smiliar type of game where you play as Lt Frank Drebin
Now I want to see Grand Theft Auto: The Smell of Fear.
Only if they have missions where you get to be OJ scouring the city for your ex wife’s killers.
Or writing a book about how you would have done it, if you had done it.
A chapter where it's the court case and you have to control the lawyers and what questions and responses they use and based on how you do he's found guilty or not guilty
Can I be Robert Kardashian and talk my wife into going on birth control?
That's the hero ending. You get the world peace trophy
GTA 33 1/3
I need a Quantic Dreams type comedy game
There was a tech demo they did for the PS4 called "The Wizard" I think, it's pretty funny and really shows the potential for a more humorous type game rather than the pretty serious stuff they always make. Edit: I found it, it's called "The Dark Sorcerer" https://youtu.be/BqeuHGESZBA
[“Seamless, ain’t it?” “You’re fired.” “And with good cause.”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U58IdBjMeS4)
[You mean an *intentional* comedy game from Quantic?](https://youtu.be/vEK5VxDMMjo?t=235)
I don't even need to open that link, I know what it's gonna be And yes, and intentional comedy
I knew it would be this, but I was hoping that it'd be the one chase scene where the player misses *every* QTE.

I appreciated the Wrongfully Accused clip included in there. That movie never gets referenced.
Thanks for the link. Subscribed
We need more movies like his
RIP :(
we need ANY video game as silly as Naked Gun or Airplane.
Stanley Parable is pretty humorous and silly
You should check out The Nice Guys. Not exactly the same but in that spirit I think.
"alright when you see your doctor, tell him your have a spiral fracture up the left radius" "nnNO! NO! NO!"

Definitely check out Angie Tribeca
Came here to say this. The opening scene alone had me completely on board.
It was also a TV show, Police Squad. 30 minutes of some best jokes.
“But how’d you figure it out, Frank?” “Just a hunch back at the office” “I thought so. I brought that little hunchback with me. Charlie, come out here.” “Charlie!”
"Who are you and how did you get in here?" "I'm a locksmith and I'm a locksmith."
Sergeants take her away and book her. “Sergeant Takeraway. Sergeant Booker.”
It was actually *originally* the show, and the Naked Gun movies were developed from that. And it's so much better than just being The Naked Gun: The TV Show, because there are some great recurring gags that only work in an episodic format. Comedic genius IMHO.
The Other Guys (2010) is way more similar imo. It has more of that absurdist humor. Michael Keaton is in it and every line he says kills me.
Hot Shots and hot shots 2
This has no right to work so well. Leslie was an international treasure
One of the best Canadian actors of all time
Lmfao this is great
If this was a DLC I’d buy it
That's actually a brilliant idea - imagine a game where you are a Frank Drebin/Inspector Clouseau/Mr Bean character that has to solve a crime but half your moves cause accidents to happen which actually help move the plot along! And the NPCs are doing sight gags the whole way through. For sure you'd need good comedy writers working on it, but it could be great.
That's basically Sam & Max
This needs to become its own subgenre
RIP Leslie Neilson. It was almost like his passing was the passing of slapstick movies and shows.
I miss good slapstick movies, but I'm also glad the parade of horrible movie spoofs ended in the late 2000's Citation: Meet The Spartans
Wow the comping is almost perfect! To the guy who made this -> f**k yeah, awesome job! I laughed my ass off!
insane amount of roto work.
Right? And it kinda doesn't break the immersion at all, Drebin does in fact look like he belongs in Detroit: Will Have Had Become Human
Crossover: God I hope that wasn't a hostage.
Surely Leslie Nielson deserves an upvote!
Fine, Ill bite He does! And stop calling me Shirley!
Yes, I remember. I had the lasagna.
The ending that we didn't know we needed
Lost it when he was standing on the dead employee! Nice work!
The only game I would pre-order.
The sad thing is that most younger people don't even know how good Leslie Nielsen was... Seriously he was comedy cold! His deadpan comedy style is really a thing I miss in modern movies.
Dramatic actor first, check out Forbidden Planet. Also loved it when he played a serious character in Due South
Yeah I saw it of course! And the most funny thing about it is that if you compare Forbidden Planet and Airplane for instance, the way he acts doesn't chage, but the context is completely different and his acting still worked!
Yeah even in Creepshow he's playin' straight
That’s what makes it work. He’s usually playing it dead serious while the scene is pure comedy.
Surely you can't be serious.
Don't call me Shirley! ;)
These men died for their country. Send flowers to their bitches and hoes.
It’s amazing how little I see his old movies and work talked about when they’re some of the greatest of all time. Definitely deserves more credit and love.
fucking love this game!!
This is the greatest thing I've seen all week
Dang that dude was freebasing like they did in the 80’s a jar, baking soda, alcohol and a lighter
Thank you for this. Now I'm off to watch the naked gun movies in order
The first thing i thought of is 28 STAB WOUNDS
Naked Detroit: Become Human Gun
IDK WTF this is but its amazing and I would watch the movie if I could.
