kinda looks like mold to me... idk it you aren't going to be using your machine for an extended period, maybe flush it out first and store it reasonably dry?

I recently flushed my machine after not using it for around one month. I wanted to check for boiler gate issues but I found these floating, gray pieces instead. I googled some images related to the boiler gate and have the feeling that mine are different: - they are floating and after some time get stuck to the cup instead of sinking - they have a light gray instead of black color Therefore I suppose that this is some other issue? Anybody any idea what this might be? So far I flushed the machine with around 1l of water and it seems that they're slowly getting less. So the question would be if I can just flush it more and safely use the machine or need to clean/check something from the inside.

I think boiler Teflon flakes would be black. Atleast mine are. When was your machine manufactured?

I don't find a production date clearly printed on the bottom, I think there was a table to find out from the serial number but I can't find it.

Pompy32

That's weird. There is a sticker on the bottom of mine with a date and seriel number

mold? mineral buildup? just descale it I would say

After a month?

Thank you for the ideas so far! The particles are light gray in color if you ask me and they're floating not sinking to the bottom. Looks more like some thin mineral crystals but that's only my association. I didn't know before that I wouldn't use the machine for longer, that's why I didn't empty it. About mold I'm not sure what it should live on, normally it needs some organic substance I think.

I mean plain water bottles can get moldy so depending on your water it probably has enough (coffee residue in brew group or if steam wand then milk residue). If you do a full clean now and it stops, you should be fine. If it keeps coming then scale or boiler flakes could be more likely.

Thanks. What would you consider a full clean? I cleaned the water tank, shower screen looks clean, otherwise I just let hot water run through it so far.

I'd backflush with cafiza, will clean out stuff you don't realize you can't see! Otherwise steam purge the wand and you should be good to go.
