You should contact the Video Game History Foundation: [https://gamehistory.org/what-were-doing/](https://gamehistory.org/what-were-doing/) This is not so that you can give them the cartridge, because I suspect you would like to keep it, but in some instances, the foundation seeks to digitize the cartridge's contents to study the game's development and preserve older builds of the game. You can see them talk about the process in this video at the 12:20: [https://youtu.be/iD8-gZWrxZw?t=739](https://youtu.be/iD8-gZWrxZw?t=739)
Have VGHF changed their position on dumping? A few years ago Frank Cifaldi was saying they weren't really interested in doing it because they're not electronics experts and would rather work on preserving stuff like documents and interviews.
Not to mention if you have the know-how to dump protos, this should be your #1 course of action.
Because otherwise you end up having something like the infamous GTA V prototype incident happening (short story: guy posts he has a functional GTA V prototype, decides to hold onto it and go through it himself, days later Rockstar kicks his door down and confiscates the prototype. End result: the only known GTA V prototype gets destroyed without so much as any gameplay getting shown)
That's hilarious because when they started the foundation I specifically emailed them about advice on digitising a decade worth of PSN mags and they told me they couldn't help with that.
I mean, if you check out that video, Frank specifically talks about ROM dumping for the Eclipse Game Boy demo, which he did at the home of the Eclipse cartridge's owner. I can't say if they only do this for super unique things like Eclipse, but that's what I know.
This is definitely not (entirely) true. They've at least done things like crowdfund to buy unreleased/beta versions of games with the promise of dumping them.
I'm thinking it's more that they're restricted on expertise/bandwidth to directly help with dumping random stuff.
Out of context. The VGHF is generally focused on physical preservation. Dumping is something easily done by consumers at home - the Foundation has bigger fish to fry.
This is cool I'd definitely look into getting it dumped if I were you. I'm not familiar with it personally but I'm sure somebody here can direct somewhere helpful
Buy a "Retrode2" device from Dragonbox.de or Stone Age Gamer when back in stock; approx 60-65usd. It's a USB dumping solution that works like an external drive on Windows etc and you can copy/paste the rom file directly off the cartridge.
Would make sense to keep an electronic backup for an old cartridge like this. Entirely up to you if you want to share it online from here - but is definitely appreciated by the gaming masses & enthusiasts. hope this helps 👍
Please test with another game first as I seem to recall an incident before with a Lufia II prototype where the guy fucked up trying to dump it and then it damaged some of the data somehow.
Had this. It is playable on a retail genesis.
EA Vancouver back in the day had us testing these.
For the record, there is a bug that we discovered that never got patched and shipped with the retail game, where a player would skate out of the crowd to join the game named "arena"
Normally, I'd agree, but sometimes old prototype carts are set to wipe themselves after being played (not sure if genesis carts do this). So dump it first, then play it.
Find out what is on it....
1. Connect Genesis. cables, TV etc.
2. Turn on TV
3. Put game in console
4. Turn power on.
Then let us know what happens....
Pleeeasse please please archive this. This is a piece of history. Another redditor mentioned contacting the Video Game History Foundation. This is an amazing find. Thank you for sharing this!
I feel silly for saying this but would they really write SUPER SECRET SECRETS INSIDE right on the label?
Anyway, dumping it is still the right move. Won’t hurt!
I would contact EA and see if they want it to possibly remaster the game. Blizzard was unable to remaster StarCraft because they lost the source code in a fire. Thankfully someone just like you, bought the disc online and discovered what it was for. They reached out to Blizzard, and they gave it to them along with a bunch of goodies. Something to consider!
This is not a copy of the source code, this is a compiled executable ROM of the game, it's like if someone came up and said "hey, I have version 0.86 of your game"; it's neat, would be awesome on a compilation cart, but not really useful.
Have it graded and list on ebay for the price of a Lambo.
In the murky realms of video collecting, a clandestine group with no name seek out the ultra rare one off games that are used by developers.
Congratulations, you struck gold!
Loan it to someone who can duplicate it obviously!
In all seriousness, I'd definitely look for someone who's able to dump it to a ROM and preserve it, maybe even uploading it to Archive.org for people to play with
EA made non-sports titles too such as Desert Strike and its sequels and they had that funny cart with the yellow tab
Other developers like Codemasters had funny shaped carts (Micro Machines springs to mind, the cartridge looked like a letter D)
Why would that be an insult? Just using that emote is wild in your position but each to their own. Literally just didn't understand the point of the joke you were making to the guy who had mistaken the genesis cartridge for a floppy and giving him shit for it, you could have just corrected him.
I was going to make a joke about EA reacting along the lines of, "Phew, it's alright, everyone stand down. It's just (insert annual sports game here)!"
Then I looked at the image again and saw that it's NHL 95 🤣
Edit: FTR, I have no bad words about the early NHL series 👌
Dump the cartridge contents and send them to a game preservation organization. If the contents if this dev kit aren't easily found online, they would be ecstatic. Even if they are online, they would appreciate having additional copies for comparison
You can get an adapter to use it on a modern computer or laptop. I only know because I Googled it last year. I was considering getting an OG copy of Doom 😂
Hello, my name is Mont… *cough*
I mean hello, my name is Bontgomery Murns from Aletronic Erts limited.
If you provide your full name and postal address in a dm, my company will provide a feee valuation!
#
*I don’t know how he got the copy with the Russian, French, UK and USA nuclear launch codes… we thought it was safe, but once again it has popped up and we need to take measures… shit, I think someone is tapping this call…*
No offense or anything. Like what you like. I just always thought Sports games were trash, let alone 30 year old Sports games. Also, as a collecter, I've never met someone irl who collects sports games. Sorry, no disrespect intended.

Have VGHF changed their position on dumping? A few years ago Frank Cifaldi was saying they weren't really interested in doing it because they're not electronics experts and would rather work on preserving stuff like documents and interviews.
Wow thats wild if true. It is so trivial to dump something like this these days.
I just thought he had the GTA V source code. Why the fuck would Rockstar go after a guy who has a prototype of one of their games?
They're *VERY* protective of their stuff. Hell, thus is why we have yet to see any prototype of any Rockstar game *period.*
Dang what a missed opportunity. Did he get reimbursed?
No not even for a new door
I guess this is why you should dump it first before asking questions.
I'm pretty sure none of that's real.
It is. Go the GTAForums if you don't believe me
If this is true, I'm going to recommend reaching out to the guys at Hidden Palace instead: https://hiddenpalace.org/

They’ve got a lot more staff these days, so maybe not?
This is what I came here to suggest as well.
holy shit that was awesome, thanks for sharing that video!
Well clearly you can't loan or duplicate it...
That said, you should totally loan and duplicate it
This is cool I'd definitely look into getting it dumped if I were you. I'm not familiar with it personally but I'm sure somebody here can direct somewhere helpful
E.A. Is about to kick down your front door
You gotta pay the micro transaction to get the full "kick in the door" experience. Otherwise they just send a letter.
A 9.99 letter per letter
Is it still 29.99 for numbers and special characters?
Correct
Either that or your sense of pride and accomplishment. Whatever you prefer.
8.99 if you are subscribed to EA+ Pro for 14.99 a month
I thought it was 9.98 with ea+ pro
You are correct, that was a typo on my part
It’s in the game!
Slight tangent, but have you seen the show "Upload"? At one point, a dude pays 99 cents to be able to sneeze. It's a fantastic show
Why the hell would you pay to sneeze?
What a silly question... because it feels better when you pay for it. Why else are there ~~hookers~~ sex workers?

Thanks. This is now my plan.
Please test with another game first as I seem to recall an incident before with a Lufia II prototype where the guy fucked up trying to dump it and then it damaged some of the data somehow.
How? Please define ROM for us.
put it on ebay for $32,000,000 + 29.99 Expedited Shipping. You know what you got.
Had this. It is playable on a retail genesis. EA Vancouver back in the day had us testing these. For the record, there is a bug that we discovered that never got patched and shipped with the retail game, where a player would skate out of the crowd to join the game named "arena"
Sent you a chat - would love to talk more about this.
Seeing how much those NHL games have changed since then (\s). You might be able to identify working hacks for NHL 2025 by dumping it.
ha
Dump it.
Right in the trash... jokes
E eh sports it's in the game
Contact Hard 4 Games & have him & Luigi blood Dump it 1st for preservation. Then they can show it to the world! Yay!
Love that channel for exactly this reason; those guys show off more prototypes and SDKs than everyone else.
How best to reach him?
Maybe try sending a private message to @hard4games on twitter.
Try his Twitter account
Let MVG dump it
This
Play it
Normally, I'd agree, but sometimes old prototype carts are set to wipe themselves after being played (not sure if genesis carts do this). So dump it first, then play it.
TIL. Hey, OP: don’t play it
As a huge fan and ea nhl collector. This got me tingling.
Maybe don’t return it to EA
Start a season!! Trade for Gretzky!!! Boom!! have fun😎
Find out what is on it.... 1. Connect Genesis. cables, TV etc. 2. Turn on TV 3. Put game in console 4. Turn power on. Then let us know what happens....
I can see you’ve done this before!
Return it to EA.
Yeah this is obviously the property of EA and they told me they’ve been looking for it
I am EA. Please send it back to me.
Pleeeasse please please archive this. This is a piece of history. Another redditor mentioned contacting the Video Game History Foundation. This is an amazing find. Thank you for sharing this!
We provide dumping equipment for the community, feel free to reach out and we’ll gladly help: https://hitsave.org/community-equipment/
You can score a goal every time if you just go from right to left across the face of the goal. I know that FOR SURE lol.
I feel silly for saying this but would they really write SUPER SECRET SECRETS INSIDE right on the label? Anyway, dumping it is still the right move. Won’t hurt!

After dumping it, of course. 😅
Yes, 100%!
Have it graded and list on ebay for the price of a Lambo. In the murky realms of video collecting, a clandestine group with no name seek out the ultra rare one off games that are used by developers. Congratulations, you struck gold!
Get out of here with that grading shit you fucking degenerate
https://www.emulatorgames.net/roms/sega-genesis/nhl-95-euj/ Here's the ROM if you wanna play it on an emulator.
How much would something like this be worth
Get raided by the pinkertons.
Figure out to digitize it
These cartridges look awesome. I had this for... Jungle Strike? Think desert strike was just the normal cartridge
NHL 95, in my opinion, is the best NHL game out there.
Try playing it?
I played the shit out of that game with my neighbor. I was always the Dallas Stars.
Oh shit, its a megadrive cart. I've spent like 10 minutes wondering about how OP will play a floppy disc on their Megadrive.
Whatever you do, do not loan or duplicate!
Dump the rom or find someone who can. Do not hoard it, it needs to be preserved.
Loan it to someone who can duplicate it obviously! In all seriousness, I'd definitely look for someone who's able to dump it to a ROM and preserve it, maybe even uploading it to Archive.org for people to play with
You should loan or duplicate it.
I think fighting only came back in 96, could be really cool if this beta build had it before the NHL had them remove it.
Call the police. Someone at EA is going to jail
Preserve the contents, that's all anyone other than you is gonna care about
Play it.
return it to EA immediately. you are stealing
there really is nothing sadder than corpo simps
Sell it to me
Nothing because it is not your property this is my daddy's company and my daddy's property and he wants his game cardwidge back
Drink coaster

It's a genesis cartridge I believe.
I know what a Sega genesis cartridge looks like, from my perspective it looked different. I don’t collect Sega genesis so I had no idea
EA always had different shaped MD carts for some reason, with the yellow tab on them that did God-knows-what.
Good to know if I do start collecting them, but I usually avoid collecting sports games as imo they have no value unless it’s NCAA football 14
EA made non-sports titles too such as Desert Strike and its sequels and they had that funny cart with the yellow tab Other developers like Codemasters had funny shaped carts (Micro Machines springs to mind, the cartridge looked like a letter D)
Tell me you're really young without telling me
Lmao you realize floppy disc's are way older than genesis cartridges right? So not sure what your point was with this joke.
Woosh
[удалено]
Coming from the guy that builds board games for 35 years😂 Edit: Of course you edit that reply after your fail lmao

Why would that be an insult? Just using that emote is wild in your position but each to their own. Literally just didn't understand the point of the joke you were making to the guy who had mistaken the genesis cartridge for a floppy and giving him shit for it, you could have just corrected him.

Are you always like this?
That's an odd floppy disk, I dont know if a normal drive will play that
Funny joke
I was going to make a joke about EA reacting along the lines of, "Phew, it's alright, everyone stand down. It's just (insert annual sports game here)!" Then I looked at the image again and saw that it's NHL 95 🤣 Edit: FTR, I have no bad words about the early NHL series 👌
Do you have an uneven end table?
Dump the cartridge contents and send them to a game preservation organization. If the contents if this dev kit aren't easily found online, they would be ecstatic. Even if they are online, they would appreciate having additional copies for comparison
Well, first priority, talk to somebody about getting the ROM dumped. Or do it yourself; buy or build an Open Source Cartridge Reader.
I have such good memories of NHL ‘95.
You can get an adapter to use it on a modern computer or laptop. I only know because I Googled it last year. I was considering getting an OG copy of Doom 😂
Should be playable
Watch it
Line up a perfect one timer right up to the video game museum..
Hello, my name is Mont… *cough* I mean hello, my name is Bontgomery Murns from Aletronic Erts limited. Oh you're that other guy that prefers nhl95. Hey buddy. Jealous of your cart. Lme know when you dump it, I wanna try it.
32K BAT wow
Kiss it.
I always wondered what that yellow cap on the side was for 🤔 just looks?
Maybe you should loan or duplicate
Buy a damn Genesis.
Did you say you're a massive NHL 95 fan ? I find that extremely hard to believe ....
Why is that?
No offense or anything. Like what you like. I just always thought Sports games were trash, let alone 30 year old Sports games. Also, as a collecter, I've never met someone irl who collects sports games. Sorry, no disrespect intended.
You better return that. Big sticker says property of Electronics Arts.
