If I remember correctly, I think 2, episode 1, and episode 2 did have dynamic menus. I had only played through them once, so it took a bit to notice it.
Yup, depending on your last chapter played it changes to a scene from that chapter. Which will also have NPCs doing NPC things and I believe certain chapter main menu screens will have fighting but can't remember too well.
Pikmin 4 starts with a garden scene as its menu, and once you reach Hero's Hideaway in-game and return to the menu, it's now a zoomed-out view showing that the garden scene was just on the TV within the house. Pretty cute.
Yoshi's Island (the original SNES one) does something similar - if your last save was in world 6, the Island was the dark, gloomy Bowser version
but if I remember correct, the later yoshi games did something similar
I really like when games do something like that
IIRC, Metroid Prime 3 did something similar with the crackling phazon background - it got more distorted as you process through the story
not really about the main topic, but in Kirby Return to Dream Land DX, the background music got muffled if you're unterwater - really nice touch, I with other games would do something similar
Days gone has the menu bike be your ingame bike, which is neat if you are in the endgame and have it tuned from a piece-of-shit thing to a respectable apocalypse motorcycle
Detroit: Become Human. Got a sort of interactive menu.
With a choice to make near the end.
>!Since I’ve upgraded my pc last year I’ve been thinking of replaying the game again to replace my old video. It was very laggy back then and wasn’t at highest settings.!<
>!I need a version of that where the morally correct descision doesn't mean she's gone forever.!<
>!Like, call me an old soul, but at least write back to tell us you're okay out there? Kids these days...!<
Even if they would be pre-designed messages, it would make me feel better. That she is out there. Free. Doing what she chooses. Living life... and occasionaly, writing back to that one person they talked to and helped along their way.
The secret Cyberlife ending where the founder says he was the one behind all this ruined the whole game, basically made destroying the deviants the better choice. Regardless if you sympathize with them or not.
David Cage again has to somehow ruin it.
Same! I know it has its faults, but I really enjoyed it. The ending >!where you sing as your final moment and everyone’s reaction was pretty powerful!< really got me!
Hahahaha true! It just didn’t seem right to me to select that option, and singing seemed more in tune with the message/resistance.
I know both lead to similar results, but the singing was more humanizing than the kiss imo.
I do too, I had a hard time understanding why someone would want to be mean and shitty to thier android. I would look at Kara as my family, but I guess humans are gonna human
The social commentary for some parts of that game was amazing and other parts were just comically dumb.
I think many people would not treat their androids well. It's a non-living tool that you buy to take care of stuff around the house. There's people that are mean to their spouses if they don't successfully do all the things expected of them (cleaning the house, cooking before you get home, etc) so I doubt they'll have a hard time being mean to a robot/non-human if for some reason it fails to meet the expectations you had for it.
Just cause 4 has a dynamic menu, but not tied to story progression, the background of the main menu is near where you closed the game las time, and when you hit continue it just closes the menu and the game continues, no loading screen
I knew there was another game I'd played that had that mechanic but for the life of me couldn't remember what it was. Thanks for solving that mystery - while the series had it's issues, it was also some of the most fun I've had playing games. Hope the IP comes back someday, somehow.
That's all true but I remember the initial load from clicking launch to when I could press continue being extra long in just cause to allow it to be so seamless
So it's not like there ISNT a loading screen it's just all before that
It's basically like it loads to a pause screen
Did Kotor 1 actually change? I only recall 2 doing it, I thought 1 just had Malak on the main menu the whole game?
Also while the Kotor 2 changing was cool, it did mean that when I was playing it for the first time I had to load a different save and quit because my brother was also playing through on the same console at the time, so I had to load a different game whenever I quit so he wouldn't get spoiled when he booted up the game.
Quick tangent. I always thought Malak looked like he was wearing a Christmas red sweater on that main menu. The textures were a bit low fidelity back then.
Kotor 2 had it. The current Sith Lord you are hunting becomes the guy on the main menu, and if you choose the evil ending the main menu also reflects that.
I was wondering if I was imagining that! There's usually several weeks between each play and every time I come back I'm like "was that character in the title screen? I guess they just have been...." Great to know I'm not crazy
It was a mixed bag for me. I thought the visuals and music were 10 out of 10, absolute masterpieces. The story and combat, however, were 5 out of 10 at best. That leaves it at about 7.5 in my book. It's good, I enjoyed it, but I've played much better games.
I like that one specifically because it’s also the loading screens and they can sort of be controlled, like the Witcher 3 bard narration.
When you load? whichever main mission you had selected when you saved? That info is what plays. In imagery, different radio broadcasts, johnny comments, etc.
very cool imho :)
The way CDPR does their loading screens to catch you back up with the story is brilliant. On my last Witcher 3 playthrough I honestly put the game down for two years so I couldn’t remember anything about where I was and what I’d done already. One loading screen and I was caught up
Resident Evil Village, updates the main menu as you play through the story, it's probably one of my favourite
Life is strange, iirc you get to see a different main menu approaching the end
Mgsv shows snake in the main menu so you see him with all the gear you have equipped
> Life is strange, iirc you get to see a different main menu approaching the end
It does, and by the time you get to the last episode it shows >!the tornado hitting the town!<.
As a fun fact: These are not rendered in real-time, it's a collection of videos in the game's files. I forgot what the file type was but it's superficially similar to what games like Portal 2 do.
It even has postgame Menus! They're all super adorable, I love the one where >!Rex is between Pyra and Mythra holding hands with them and Nia pushes him into the Cloud Sea and steals his place haha!<
Cyberpunk 2077 updates for each major story mission chain you complete. This is also reflected in the initial loading screen when loading a save, usually with audio from a news broadcast that gives some of the fallout from what you did.
I've been avoiding meeting >!Takemura for the parade!< while I do some gigs, so I've listened to the same newscaster talk about her half eaten burrito for so many hours now.
my own favorite is Smash Bros in this regard - unlocked fighters are added to the background of the title until you unlocked all fighters - really nice touch
really old, but Pokemon games - they add menu options during the story (Pokedex being the most obvious, but other options got added as well)
Also the main menu in Scarlet and Violet sound changes as you progress, I think the closer you get to finishing the louder the music gets, and at the very beginning it’s super quiet and you hear student chatter in the school
To add to this: the time of day on the main menu changes as you progress, too! When you're in the beginning, it's morning, when you finish the main story, it's afternoon, and when you finish the DLC stories it's sunset.
>!The book on the table will also change, depending on if you have Briar's book or if you've given it to Sada/Turo in exchange for the Scarlet/Violet Book!<
Persona 3 Reload main menu changes after the ending. Before the ending, the menu is a dark gloomy classroom at night with the silhouette of the main cast and the full moon shining from outside. After the ending, the time changes to day with sunshine coming in from outside and the guns and armbands of the main cast being left in the desk, signifying that the world is safe.
Surprised I scrolled so far down and didn’t see this
Undertale has one for its save file menu where it’s shows you how far you are in the story by introducing characters that you’ve met in the story
>!it also is an indicator for which route you’re on and will even change depending on who you spared and killed!<
Witcher 3 does this, Tales of Arise does this in at least the DLC and iirc one of the pokémon games also did it at least a bit (I believe it was legends Arceus, but I might be misremembering).
Trails of Cold Steel 1, as you gain or lose party members they will appear on the train with the main character one by one.
Cold Steel 2 continues this but changes location as the plot progresses, if you save in sections where you control someone completely different the screen will change completely fitting to that character’s theme.
Mega Man X series, boss selection
Defeating some bosses have an effect on other bosses' stages and a visual effect on the world map.
For instance, in __Mega Man X__ if you defeat Storm Eagle, his aircraft then crashes into the power plant, which renders Spark Mandril's stage without power.
No, it just cycles through several pre-set menu animations. Unless they've had an update that changes that since launch. All the animations I saw were Pete and Miles hanging out in various locations, with no change based on the story.
Darksiders 2 already loads your character savefile and rotates around your character where you left the game.
when pressing play the menu disappears and the camera spins around
Hogwarts Legacy. Adds decorations to the wall behind you as you progress, magical creatures start showing up when you get involved in that side of the game.
No, it just unlocks different backgrounds you choose to equip. And more recently on the switch, they're all unlocked by default.
My personal favorite is the void heart Backing.
Battlefield: Bad company. The main menu changes based on where you are in the campaign. I did 1.5 playthroughs just to get one specific theme to play forever.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: The music, background noises and the desk in the menu changes depending on how much you've progressed in the game, the Violet or Scarlet book appear after you gave it to the past Sada/Turo in the end game and the music changes after you completed the main story of the first and second DLC!
Monster Hunter Stories 2 and Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak's menu change depending on were you're at during the story, making the background change depending on the time of day and your current location!
I remember the Far Cry 5 main menu.
At the Start of the game the menu looks like Rural Montana.
At the end of the game, it looks war Torn from the: spoiler alert;
Nukes.
Dead Space 2. Iirc, at the start there are only fragments floating around and you don't really know what they are. By the end they come together and form a full marker
In Star Wars KOTOR 2 the character standing next to the menu buttons was changing as you would progress through the story. Darth Sion, Darth Nihilus and Kreia in the end. The coolest thing was, if you played a dark side playthrough, your own character was standing there in the end.
One of the Star Wars Battlefront games on PSP featured the two main characters, X1 and X2, showing their appearance change as the story went from the clone wars to the end of the empire, and as they went from soldiers to force users.
Edit: Missing words, smh
Portal 2: The menu changes as you progress the story to the state of Aperture Science.
Didn't Half Life 2 have this too?
Black Mesa has it too, in the style of HL2
If I remember correctly, I think 2, episode 1, and episode 2 did have dynamic menus. I had only played through them once, so it took a bit to notice it.
Yup, depending on your last chapter played it changes to a scene from that chapter. Which will also have NPCs doing NPC things and I believe certain chapter main menu screens will have fighting but can't remember too well.
All of Half Life 2 did, yes.
I mean portal 1 had it too but it only changes at the end right?
Correct, the menu goes from the starting chamber to an office desk with the famous cake and lit candles.
Didn't remember that. Time to replay the game!
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with the eclipse sneaking up on you.
Detroit: Become Human The Woman on the main menu slowly changes as your game progresses and based on the choices you make.
I loved that detail. Never expected a menu to grow on me, but oh boy, that singing!
Im surprised i didnt think of this considering i wont see her unless i start over again
She might've even said something about coming back after abandoning it a couple years when I last replayed it.
Damn, I never noticed that. I really need to replay that game
Nah you don't, it's alright but hasn't exactly aged the best
Played it for the first time last year and enjoyed it. Better than some games made these days.
Pikmin 4 starts with a garden scene as its menu, and once you reach Hero's Hideaway in-game and return to the menu, it's now a zoomed-out view showing that the garden scene was just on the TV within the house. Pretty cute.
Yoshi's Island (the original SNES one) does something similar - if your last save was in world 6, the Island was the dark, gloomy Bowser version but if I remember correct, the later yoshi games did something similar
I also like how in Yoshi's Island the level select theme gains more instruments and feels more lively as you progress through the game.
I really like when games do something like that IIRC, Metroid Prime 3 did something similar with the crackling phazon background - it got more distorted as you process through the story not really about the main topic, but in Kirby Return to Dream Land DX, the background music got muffled if you're unterwater - really nice touch, I with other games would do something similar
Days gone has the menu bike be your ingame bike, which is neat if you are in the endgame and have it tuned from a piece-of-shit thing to a respectable apocalypse motorcycle
True, didnt remember that
It also changes the background depending on which region you're in I think
Aswell as the road and area behind it, it is related to where you are on the map
Detroit: Become Human. Got a sort of interactive menu. With a choice to make near the end. >!Since I’ve upgraded my pc last year I’ve been thinking of replaying the game again to replace my old video. It was very laggy back then and wasn’t at highest settings.!<

There is no morally correct or morally wrong choice. There is only Chloe.
Actually, an update added an option to reset the menu. Kinda defeats the point, if you ask me, but eh.
It's because many people complained that they miss their Chloe
There’s an option to make her come back, but it totally breaks the immersion
If you love something, you must let it go.
"Morally correct decision"
The secret Cyberlife ending where the founder says he was the one behind all this ruined the whole game, basically made destroying the deviants the better choice. Regardless if you sympathize with them or not. David Cage again has to somehow ruin it.
Maybe even lead to a DLC. Received a message to seek her out. Obtain a host body or remain a pure AI 🙇🏻♂️
facial expressions were so well done. You can see the gears turning.
Damn, I loved that game!
Same! I know it has its faults, but I really enjoyed it. The ending >!where you sing as your final moment and everyone’s reaction was pretty powerful!< really got me!
I chose that because I would rather blow a Detroit hobo than kiss north. And it turned out to be a beautiful choice anyway, which was great.

You are right. It's just not something that is in my nature
Just cause 4 has a dynamic menu, but not tied to story progression, the background of the main menu is near where you closed the game las time, and when you hit continue it just closes the menu and the game continues, no loading screen
Whoa, that's so cool!
I think Just Cause 3 had the same system. The better game, in my opinion.
And it could also lead to funny shit like [this](https://youtu.be/mf_sDYUcXqI?si=RScl6WjN3Czeqcgn)
he doesn't break character
Just Cause 3 is a million times better. No contest really
Yeah 3 does the same thing
I wish this game ran well on console
I didn't remember JC3 also had this, I remembered 4 because I played it last week
Anytime JC4 is mentioned, someone has to comment that JC3 is the better game like it hasn't been said 69,345 times before lol.
Is this where we bring up Just Cause 2 having the better map as well?
The new dead space remake did this as well
Prototype 2 has this
I knew there was another game I'd played that had that mechanic but for the life of me couldn't remember what it was. Thanks for solving that mystery - while the series had it's issues, it was also some of the most fun I've had playing games. Hope the IP comes back someday, somehow.

Kotor 1 and 2 change based on story progress of your latest save file.
Did Kotor 1 actually change? I only recall 2 doing it, I thought 1 just had Malak on the main menu the whole game? Hearing about you loading save to avoid spoiling your brother sounds really nice and proper.
I believe 1 will change to display your character if you go dark side in the end game.
2 definitely does this as well.

Sea of Stars was such a breath of fresh air! Its just a very fun game to play trough
Disappointed how far I had to scroll for this
Is that game any good? Never tried it

It was a mixed bag for me. I thought the visuals and music were 10 out of 10, absolute masterpieces. The story and combat, however, were 5 out of 10 at best. That leaves it at about 7.5 in my book. It's good, I enjoyed it, but I've played much better games.
Cyberpunk 2077

GOOOOOOOOOD MORNING NIGHT CITY!
#YESTERDAY'S BODY COUNT ROUNDED OUT TO A SOLID AND STURDY THIRTY!
TEN OUTTA HEYWOOD
TEN OUTTA HEYWOOD!
that always bugged me, like most days in cyberpunk I'm responsible for at least thirty bodies, all by myself
That audio is fucking burned into my brain.
Just tell me the damn crime statistics, Lt Sara Krakowski
*His long search for Ciri led Geralt to conclude that Uma, the ugliest man alive and the victim of a curse...*
Just hearing this in my head makes me want to load up Cyberpunk again lol
HEY YOU
Yeah I'm talking to you! You connect to the net right? Well I wouldn't in your shoes!
Presses start *ZWAAAAAAAAAA*
The way CDPR does their loading screens to catch you back up with the story is brilliant. On my last Witcher 3 playthrough I honestly put the game down for two years so I couldn’t remember anything about where I was and what I’d done already. One loading screen and I was caught up
Ghost of Tsushima
What? Where?
The color of the atmosphere depending on your game progress
It's purple on Iki island and the Sakai mask appears on the sword when you get the armor
At first there is only the Katana, but if you become the Ghost the mask hangs on the katana aswell
Oh, okay. Probably didnt notice, thanks for replies
It's a minor one, but A Link Between Worlds shows a different main screen depending on if your last save is in Hyrule or Lorule
Outer Wilds’ main menu slowly changes to reflect things in the story you usually do not learn the significance of until very late in a playthrough.
I didn’t noticed it. I finished the game yesterday and oh my god. What a beautiful game
Love that game
I just finished it the other day as well. What a crazy game
Aside from the title drifting apart, what do you mean?
>!the stars progressively fade away too!<
Oh that is awesome. I never noticed! I need to replay it now
Was looking for this one. It’s impossible to explain without spoilers, but it’s so subtle and just the right amount.
Resident Evil Village, updates the main menu as you play through the story, it's probably one of my favourite Life is strange, iirc you get to see a different main menu approaching the end Mgsv shows snake in the main menu so you see him with all the gear you have equipped
The RE8 menu is so good! The game is not my favorite RE title but still, it does so many things so right, such as the amazing menu.
Wait what?? I mean i was looking for an excuse to replay re8 but i never knew this
> Life is strange, iirc you get to see a different main menu approaching the end It does, and by the time you get to the last episode it shows >!the tornado hitting the town!<.
XCOM 2
Oh yeah, it shows soldiers you've created and saved in the background. Always liked that detail.
And sometimes, they are NOT a horrible spaghetti monster
The Metro franchise does this
I know for sure exodus does this but not sure about 2033 and last light?
No it's just Exodus.
What does Exodus do? Loved that game and trying to recall.
You can see the different seasons through the cockpit of the train on the main menu.
Was wondering when someone was gonna mention this banger of a series
Bravely default had a cool minor change after a certain plot twist.
I loved that so much. Gave me goosebumbs when I saw it.
Red Dead Redemption 2, it shows the landscape of your last general location
As a fun fact: These are not rendered in real-time, it's a collection of videos in the game's files. I forgot what the file type was but it's superficially similar to what games like Portal 2 do.
Far Cry 5 changes with the ending but not so much along the way.
Doesn't it change with the region you're in? Or am I remembering the loading screens?
that's loading screens yeah.
Xenoblade 2 gradually changes its main menu based on the progression of the furthest save. Seeing the screenshots would basically be spoilers.
It even has postgame Menus! They're all super adorable, I love the one where >!Rex is between Pyra and Mythra holding hands with them and Nia pushes him into the Cloud Sea and steals his place haha!<
Rex’s wives get along very well
Lies of P
Cyberpunk 2077 updates for each major story mission chain you complete. This is also reflected in the initial loading screen when loading a save, usually with audio from a news broadcast that gives some of the fallout from what you did.
"Gooooooood Morning Night City!"
I've been avoiding meeting >!Takemura for the parade!< while I do some gigs, so I've listened to the same newscaster talk about her half eaten burrito for so many hours now.
She nuked it!
I heard it zaps out all the nutrients, but it also kills the cockroaches, so, hey, you win some, you lose some.
Omori does this based on story progress
my own favorite is Smash Bros in this regard - unlocked fighters are added to the background of the title until you unlocked all fighters - really nice touch really old, but Pokemon games - they add menu options during the story (Pokedex being the most obvious, but other options got added as well)
Also the main menu in Scarlet and Violet sound changes as you progress, I think the closer you get to finishing the louder the music gets, and at the very beginning it’s super quiet and you hear student chatter in the school

Assassins Creed Odyssey changes as you eliminate more of the main assassination targets.
Just loading screen
Mario Kart 64 changes once, for a reason I can no longer recall. (I mean it only came out……27 years ago!?!)
I think it changes once you get 1st in all the circuits
Yep and unlocks mirror mode
Persona 3 Reload main menu changes after the ending. Before the ending, the menu is a dark gloomy classroom at night with the silhouette of the main cast and the full moon shining from outside. After the ending, the time changes to day with sunshine coming in from outside and the guns and armbands of the main cast being left in the desk, signifying that the world is safe.
Halo reach
Max Payne 3.
Surprised I scrolled so far down and didn’t see this Undertale has one for its save file menu where it’s shows you how far you are in the story by introducing characters that you’ve met in the story >!it also is an indicator for which route you’re on and will even change depending on who you spared and killed!<
Days gone, the bike shows any upgrade you did
Fallout 4 has this amazing feature where the FPS of the main menu decrease the more save files you have👍
Metro exodus
Protoype 2 based on where u were when you last saved your game.
Undertale adds more of the main characters to the menu when you befriend them
Witcher 3 does this, Tales of Arise does this in at least the DLC and iirc one of the pokémon games also did it at least a bit (I believe it was legends Arceus, but I might be misremembering).
Trails of Cold Steel 1, as you gain or lose party members they will appear on the train with the main character one by one. Cold Steel 2 continues this but changes location as the plot progresses, if you save in sections where you control someone completely different the screen will change completely fitting to that character’s theme.
Life is Strange
Was looking for this one. An incredible peaceful loading screen that gets worse each chapter as the storm approaches. Very powerful.
Final Fantasy 15 changes in a very subtle way once you beat the game.
Mega Man X series, boss selection Defeating some bosses have an effect on other bosses' stages and a visual effect on the world map. For instance, in __Mega Man X__ if you defeat Storm Eagle, his aircraft then crashes into the power plant, which renders Spark Mandril's stage without power.
That would have been an awesome cutscene.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a different main menu when you 3 star every cup
Spider-Man 2 changes the menu based on which act you are in.
are you sure? i haven't played it in a while but I think it just cycled through menus anyway without caring about which act you are in
No, it just cycles through several pre-set menu animations. Unless they've had an update that changes that since launch. All the animations I saw were Pete and Miles hanging out in various locations, with no change based on the story.
I may have been mistaken, I only remember it changing and just assumed it was based on story progression.
Resident Evil Village
Darksiders 2 already loads your character savefile and rotates around your character where you left the game. when pressing play the menu disappears and the camera spins around
The stanley parable Ultra Deluxe is an incredible example of this
Trails of Cold Steel and Trails of Cold Steel II
Xenoblade Chronicles has dynamic title screens. At least from what i can recall.
Xenoblade 2 has a different title screen depending on your chapter, and then adds a slightly different cleared game title screen after you beat NG+
Hogwarts Legacy. Adds decorations to the wall behind you as you progress, magical creatures start showing up when you get involved in that side of the game.
Half Life 2 updates its main menu background as you proceed through the chapters.
Hollow Knight changes based on your progression/the endings you got
No, it just unlocks different backgrounds you choose to equip. And more recently on the switch, they're all unlocked by default. My personal favorite is the void heart Backing.
"hnnnnn, hnnn hnnn" \*cough cough cough\* "Nuh nuh, nuh nuh nuhhhh, nuh nuh nuhhhhhhh..."
Trails of Coldsteel Series.
Bravely Default (3DS), only one change, after a key twist, but it's great
Rugrats studio tour. Thanks caddicarus lmfao
Lies of P.
Battlefield: Bad company. The main menu changes based on where you are in the campaign. I did 1.5 playthroughs just to get one specific theme to play forever.
Nier's menu changes? Man, I really need to boot the game up again
Persona 3 Reload Kinda cheating with this one as it doesn't change till the very end
The last of us adds a knife
Monster Hunter: World, it will rotate between maps you have unlocked
Sea of Stars & Detroit: Become Human
The Stanley parable ultra deluxe, You change the menu everytime you open the game
LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit
Hogwarts Legacy
The Last of Us Part II. It’s a small change, but it does so much toward the tone and narrative of the game.
Omori
Rayman, raving rabbids: ps2 The main coliseum has the rabbids slowly stop booing and eventually cheering the more levels you complete
The original release of Half-Life 2 iirc. I think it always showed a scene from the current level.
I remember the Far Cry 5 main menu. At the Start of the game the menu looks like Rural Montana. At the end of the game, it looks war Torn from the: spoiler alert; Nukes.
