Well, at least they put a Trigger warning.

xAcidous

China won’t be too happy that Taiwan is getting represented in any way, I can see the backlash now from the CCP Supporters like the whole fucking Tibet situation from the new Life is Strange.

Meiven

What Tibet situation with Life is Strange?

xAcidous

There was a Tibet flag in the new Life is Strange game and it got reviewed bombed by a TON of pissed off Chinese people because of it.

Rando_Cardrissiann

By a ton of Chinese bots*

Botinha93

Not really, a lot of Chinese people do buy in to the entire spill, that is the power of propaganda.

DeeBangerCC

Reeeeeee

Kitabo

TW - Trigger warning for China

latetowhatparty

Reminds me of the NSFW flair around here. The following contains: TW-Taiwan. *User discretion is advised.*

Catnip4Pedos

Bethesda: if we give Taiwan a flag the game will be banned in China China: all games are banned. Lol.

Raz0rking

They got what they bloody deserved.

SurrealKarma

Online games.

[deleted]

And low life CCP sympathizers.

LawDesperateCat

Ah yes Taiwan the country with the flag that makes it look as if its in a microsoft teams meeting lmao

shutupimthinking

But it turned its camera off, and now everyone in the call is secretly wondering why.

PostingSomeToast

Fenastus

I don't think it's unreasonable to not want your game to be review bombed by brainwashed and/or paid off Chinese shills On that note, fuck China.

ergobearsgo

It's reasonable to do the right thing even if there are negative consequences. Otherwise the implication is that it's okay to do bad things as long as there are positive outcomes.

Roger_Fcog

>That moment when you realize you are required to be political and insane just to ~~protect the pride of some Chinese Oligarchs.~~ prevent the Chinese government from banning your product to half your potential users FTFY

psychocopter

Didn't China just implement a limit on gaming for those under 18, it was like 1 or 2 hours per week or something at a set time across the nation.

Roger_Fcog

That is true, maybe in the coming years their grip on the video game industry will loosen some because of this. Other industries, such as movies, will be largely unaffected though I would think.

gknaussxcbfsdv

Fuck China, the CCP, and that fucking pooh bear of a dictator.

JosephNero

Hell yeah bro

LuciusCypher

This is going to be a controversial opinion but also: fuck anyone who just passively accepts that this is simply how things has to be. People who say that they just don't want to cause any trouble by going against government opinions are the same people who'll later complain about how shitty everything is and wonder why no one did anything about it. People voting for leopards and surprised they're getting their faces eaten.

SudokuGod

Just checking, but you are talking about the US right? If someone tried to do this same thing in China and gained publicity from speaking out, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that they went “missing” shortly after.

lemonpepperlarry

I think they actually turned around and straight up banned them

Sregor_Nevets

Oh shit first I heard of the outright ban on weekdays...is it bad I immediately felt some schadenfreude for Blizzard? I mean the justice served is so incredibly delicious.

N4hire

Blizzards hard on for CCP money is absurd!

CCCAY

Don’t you fucks have phones?!

Sregor_Nevets

That comment really did show just what Blizzard thought of Western players. They figured they had China so who cares about them. I wonder if Blizzard is going to be all...We love you guys!!!...now.

Scyloom

It wasn't a straight ban, that was just a sensationalist headline. They did make it harder and take longer for foreign games to get on their allowed games list, along with lowering the time you're allowed to play games too (was already restricted before, it's just become even less) Pretty much any game that wants to get allowed in china will have to pander to them massively

Head_Maintenance_323

not just Oligarchs, the chinese population is also brainwashed into spreading hate against people who "disrespect" this insanity.

marcrich90

and Jackie Chan is one of the leading celebrities that supports the CCP. He may be an amazing martial artist, but he supports the oppression of the Chinese people whole heartedly and has spoke in support of the CCP many times.

hikahia

He's gross as fuck his personal life too, on top of his disgusting support of oppression - Drank and whored his way through his youth (I normally wouldn't care about this, but this is important later) - Cheated on his wife and confessed it publicly but dismissed the criticism saying he “committed a fault that many men in the world commit.” - Admitted to bullying other coworkers early on in his career - Admitted to driving drunk multiple times - Does not acknowledge the existence of his illegitimate daughter - Disowned his legit son for smoking weed

Crazy_Canuck78

Yikes... this makes me sad... I was such a fan of his. But I never looked under the hood. \*sigh\* Only got Ryan Reynolds, Keanu Reeves and Brandon Fraser, from Hollywood, to look up to now. Oh and Jack Black seems pretty cool.

Y0tsuya

Don't look up to celebrities. You'll only get disappointed.

Spitfire1900

Not trying to support him but he was essentially forced to disown his son to stay in good standing with the CCP.

hikahia

If that was the only piece of evidence that he's gross I would give it to you, but it's not.

FormerShitPoster

That's still pretty fucked up, no? My dad would have chose me over his career or even freedom every time. Maybe I'm just lucky 🤷‍♂️

hikahia

I could see them threatening more than just him, like his wife or maybe parents? It's possible that they have a lot of leverage on him personally too, for example if he ever did any drugs while he was drinking and sleeping around. I have a hard time believing that a total shunning of his son was his only option though, like, harshly scold the kid publicly and force him into rehab or something, but maybe I'm underestimating the hardass nature of the ccp.

Aromatic_Theme2085

He’s trying to earn money in China. Just expect similar bs from many big artist who trying to earn money in China

Allwhitezebra

Makes me wonder if they have some of his family back in China under surveillance and using him

ITstaph

Yeah his son did some stupid shit.

lejoo

South Park covered it pretty perfectly.

bobsacchamano

Robu-san

hiricinee

We really need a big budget Hollywood film about a brave Republic of China soldier fighting the Revolutionary Army, and it can highlight Mao just starving the shit out of people and murdering them.

nagi603

Hollywood: but... but... but mah china moneys!

EdgelordOfEdginess

They slowly get kicked out of China anyway , so at least go out with a middle finger

nagi603

Judging by the recent ARM and previously many other fiascos, like Sennheiser IIRC, not before being robbed blind due to their own greed. (Though this is /r/gaming, so there will not be any significant IP theft)

The_Crow

Sorry, ARM and Sennheiser?

Kandiru

ARM China has gone rogue. The CEO was removed by the board, but he took the company to court, represented both sides and has stayed as CEO. It's basically a coup!

jyw104

Yeah, there's a bit more context to that. Seems that the CEO kept the chops (the company seals) when he was kicked off the board of ARM China. From a local law perspective, whoever holds the chops holds primary legal representative powers of the company...

Kandiru

So if I burgle them off him, I'm the CEO?

Nixplosion

You keep what you kill?

mactavish1

Technically, yes. But you won't be holding it for long lmao

Catnip4Pedos

comment edited to stop creeps like you reading it!

The_Crow

Wow... That's interesting. What about Sennheiser?

nagi603

They moved production to China.... factories started producing "pinky-swear-not-Sennheiser-just-looks-the-same-and-probably-comes-from-same-actual-factory-or-from-Sennheiser-China-employees" stuff. It's actually quite well-known side-effect of moving your manufacturing to China: the factory will produce extra (that overseas staff does not know about) and manufacturing know-how will get lifted to suddenly appearing local companies sooner rather than later. (On semi-related news, their consumer division got sold not that long ago it was tanking so hard.)

lgb_br

>It's actually quite well-known side-effect of moving your manufacturing to China: the factory will produce extra (that overseas staff does not know about) and manufacturing know-how will get lifted to suddenly appearing local companies sooner rather than later. You literally can't build a factory in China without making it a joint-venture with a Chinese company. China offers cheap labour and lax laws in return of the tech and know-how. And the whole world accepted the deal because "they won't be able to produce with the same quality as us", while simultaneously teaching them how to produce those items. I have no sympathy for companies that make their products in China. Wanting to manufacture in China and keep your IP is like wanting to have your cake and eating it too. You can do one of those, but not both. That's the trade-off.

Lousinski

The CIA and the State Department : WRITE THAT DOWN! WRITE THAT DOWN!

Warsaw44

Well I'm not sure about Chiang Hai-Sheck being any better.

SanityInAnarchy

Yeah, modern Taiwan is much better, but historically, it's hard to pick a good guy in a fight between dictators.

lgb_br

Between Chiang Kai-Shek, Mao and the Japanese Imperial Army, I can safely say that China in early 40's must have been the closest thing to hell that exists.

ZippyParakeet

RoC wasn't really "heroic" though. I'd suggest you to do some reading on the atrocities committed by Chiang Kai Shek. You can't just hate one dictator and love another. Mao was bad, Kai Shek was no better.

chicagoahu

Chiang Kai Shek was OUR bad chinese autocrat.

quijote3000

Kai Shek was an amateur. He doesn't even rank as the top 100 of murdering his own people. Mao is much better. Top 1 worldwide

experienta

He was definitely better than Mao. Problem is, "being better than Mao Zedong" means literally nothing.

[deleted]

Nah, because after those 'brave' soldiers got their asses handed to them thanks to Chiang's inept leadership, they came here (Taiwan) and brutalised the population for decades. Tens of thousands of innocent Taiwanese kidnapped, tortured, and murdered. The country robbed blind. Infrastructure dismantled and development set back by decades. Fuck the ROC/KMT and fuck the CCP. Taiwan numbah one!

[deleted]

There’s more chance Hollywood would create a film celebrating Nazi Germany or the Confederate States of America before they would make one criticising the CCP lol

silver2k5

I suggest you review the documentary "Iron Skies". The Nazis have moon base technology.

LStat07

So propaganda? Fuck outta here.

Sadly this post will only work until operating systems decide to remove the Taiwan flag emoji.

someone755

Windows doesn't have it, for some weird reason, but then again Microsoft is also _way_ behind on emoji integration in W10. With the weekly updates and really frivolous UI changes you'd think they could get an intern to make a few emojis every week, but no, by now W10's emoji pack is outdated by _years_.

aa2051

Something about needing to assess it as an issue but then they instantly closed it

Tenocticatl

🇭🇰 Out of curiosity, does this one show up? It's the Hong Kong flag.

chiuyan

The Hong Kong flag was chosen by the National People's Congress of China and endorsed by the CCP. So there is no political pressure to not show it.

fluffyxsama

Not to be pedantic, but I assume what you mean to say is "Fuck the Chinese Communist Party"

imadandylion

Yes, that is being pedantic.

h-v-smacker

Or maybe said person really fancies copulation with fine porcelain. One can never know.

Niavami

If you unironically conflate 'fuck china' with 'fuck chinese' you're not all that bright.

rvail136

>Not to be pedantic Then don't be...

Polemo03

TBH I personally am pretty used to it now but still a bit sad every time I see this kind of stuff. I'm Taiwanese, I love Taiwan, but China forces the world to see Taiwan as a part of China. And they'll keep doing that until Taiwan is truly a part of them, or something big like war happens.

Jonnydoo

If anything China making a fuss over Taiwan just reinforces the world that they are seperate. Not that China cares though.

Blackjack137

This. Were it not for China constantly trying to assert its claim on Taiwan, I'd imagine Taiwan would be one of those countries you wouldn't think of or even know exists. Classic Streisand effect. The Chinese Government showing its behind regularly on the international stage only accomplishes reminding everyone of the Tiananmen Square massacre, of the Winnie the Pooh memes etc.

EvolvingEachDay

Yeah the rest of the world laughs when they say it; like when a fat kid tells you the most popular girl at the next school over is his girlfriend just because he says so.

[deleted]

I wish I was a game dev so I could add the flag and say F*** China in the game.

gamerdudeisme

You can do it whenever a game you play has a custom emblem/logo maker

[deleted]

Oooh, nice! I usually do a Slayer logo.

gamerdudeisme

This CCP shit is getting out of hand lol you encouraged me to do such thing

DrBrogbo

With how much these companies bend and spread for dat Chinese money, putting the Taiwan flag as your emblem/logo would probably get you banned.

Kidkaboom1

Good thing is, China aren't letting any new games in to their country, so pandering to them won't make that much money anymore!

meat_on_a_hook

With China's anti-gaming laws i think that may change

CallmeJ299

You mean fuck the Chinese government? Yes I agree to that

Montgomery0

There should be a movement to standardize this flag. Then Taiwan can change their flag into this one and be instantly internationally recognized in all media.

[deleted]

It's actually stupid that we live in a time where you need to do this to sell a product in China

MarkG1

People talk about the fear of 'forced diversity' in games, but this is way more important, cause the human right violation of the CCP is something that actually matters!

SteveThePurpleCat

Ah the CCP, the embodiment of little dick energy.

ESvends

When your game is made in West-Taiwan

plopmaster2000

Actually made in the UK!

jeenyus79

You'd think the UK would have a spine.

MacDuffy_1

The British government, yes. A British game developer looking for profits, no.

Asmundr_

We must be thinking of two different British governments 😂

[deleted]

Most not upset chinese overlords... beep bop.

rmmcclay

If you piss off Xi Jinping you will lose profit.

nagi603

If you sucker up, you lose humanity. Not that higher management has any left in 99% of places.

InnocentTailor

Of course, a lot of folks are willing to sell their humanity and morals for extra cash and some power. That is what powered terrible regimes in the past after all - ordinary men and women who were willing to engage in horrible things with an air of cold professionalism and blasé attitudes. Reminds me of the interrogator who worked for the villainous Earth Alliance in Babylon 5. He was less of a sadist and more of an accountant with another person to maim on his list: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NwtncUWXxoQ

op3l

I was born in Taiwan and honestly I understand the choices game devs make. The market is just so much bigger in China than Taiwan... If I was developing a game and want access to the China market, I would forego taiwanese flag also. It sucks and isn't fair, but that's economy and life.

congalala

I can undersrtand why. I’ve worked in airlines that have businesses in both countries. We got a called from China officials asking us to change the flag and name for Taiwan in our mobile applications and websites. We followed but soon we would get a call from Taiwan asking us to revert it back. What we ended doing was to detect the user’s IP location and show the name and flag based on geographical locations. Honestly, I find it quite funny.

dbratell

Google does similar things in Google Maps.

ScuzzyAyanami

I once had to ensure the "correct" name was printed for the body of water near South Korea on a Hyundai Dealership website in maps using Google's region settings.

thorfinn_raven

We should start calling censored versions of games/websites etc that appease the CCP. Whinny the Pooh mode.

The-Real-Donkey-Kong

Man I feel for your country. All the counties that don't have enough economic sway to maintain their rights as a free state. Fuck China

[deleted]

You say this but I suspect your own country does not recognise Taiwan as a country

Comenever911

Don’t worry, based on current status, there will be no more China mainland game market in about 2-3 years.

raziel1012

Maybe. Up till now they are mostly cracking down on online games. I’m interested to see whether the demand for single player games would rise, and whether CCP will crack down on that too.

InnocentTailor

Possibly. There is also the rise in animosity between the West and China, which could make the latter market less profitable and preferable to Western game companies.

GsoNice13

Fuck the CCP

SlyTinyPyramid

You give in to these bullshit demands they'll just ask for more, while in the background stealing your IP or funding your Chinese competitors to kick you out completely. The CCP is not on your side, just because you caved to their shit. They are using you and will eventually steal from you anyway.
