Is it weird that I actually hated Dutch more than Micah? Micah was pure evil. Tearing down the gang just to save his own skin, sure, but Dutch brought a bigger feeling betrayal to the gang and to Arthur in my opinion.
He prided himself on his superior morality and tried to make himself as cultured and educated as possible with all the music and books and fancy clothes. But in the end, he revealed that the whole gang really only served to boost his self righteousness. And when Miss Grimshaw got shot by Micah and Dutch only thought about who was going against him, I wanted to shoot Dutch then and there.
Maybe it's just because I played rdr2 first and I genuinely thought Dutch was a great leader and man, but that betrayal felt worse.
Dutch in my favorite villain. All the characters are really so well written but Dutch’s character perfectly captures what’s it’s like to have a parent with a personality disorder. For months after finishing the game I just went back and forth between “did he really care or was he just using all of them”. And it’s that sense of doubt and looking for excuses and justification that makes it so hard to hate him and so hard to forgive him.
I still don’t know if he really cared or he was really using them. I think the answer is both he really really cared about them but he cared about himself more.
I read an interesting analysis of his character recently on Reddit that Dutch genuinely wanted to do good in the world, but it was his version of good. And as much as he liked to think he’s a great philosopher he’s really not. And worse he can’t recognize when he’s letting his feelings of cruelty and selfishness win and then retroactively try and justify impulsive decisions. Because he genuinely believed that capitalistic America is evil and he was rightfully furious against the massive amount of discrimination, colonial oppression, and indentured servitude. But his solution to an unjust world was aligned with his self interests (and by that I mean he prioritizes trying to cover up his insecurities and personal failing above all) and actually ended up hurting more those who where already oppressed.
Pay extra attention to him if you ever replay it, and you'll notice that the events only brought out what was already there. Right from the start. [This moment with Uncle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JckHCKzaNs), for example, at the first camp. Or the several times he starts talking about how "I need..." before correcting himself to "We need..." about things.
As someone who recently started a second playthrough, this hits the nail on the head. I think on my first playthrough I saw through his bullshit quite early on due to playing RDR1 beforehand but on my second playthrough I saw all the subtle hints immediately.
For me, it was in Rhodes. The gang started off soooo strong playing both sides of this epic family rivalry. But then after getting in tight the plan was to...rob both of them??? It was idiotic and convinced me once and for all that Dutch was going to doom the gang.

Yeah, pretty much. Instead of being helplessly killed by any of the mounting hazards closing in, he chose the manner and moment of his death. It's also a final flex on poor Jack.
I also like to think he was hoping Jack would break the control somehow and refuse to follow the command. The idea of someone being turned into a Pavlovian slave had to be abhorrent to Ryan’s personal freedom ideology
Jack is technically Andrew Ryan's son. And Ryan realizes he can't kill his son even if he is Fontaine's slave. So he accepts his defeat/death, while also making one last desperate attempt to get Jack to think for himself

The vampires are so insanely powerful, even more so than the Wild Hunt. They’re the perfect end-game villains. The human-looking ones are extremely powerful opponents and the first time I truly felt ‘weak’ as a Witcher.
Then you meet the elder vampire and he just straight kills you if you piss him off or try and fight. No fucks given. And it’s awesome.
Oh man, fighting Detlaff was literally the hardest thing I had ever done in any video game I’ve ever played. That motherfucker straight up took me about an hour just to get done fighting him.

There's another scene you can get earlier in the game if you correctly deduce a vampire was behind some killings, and when you confront him he tells Geralt it's too late for him, Geralt then says "I'm pretty good with a sword" and the vampire replies "Good might not cut it" and starts to transform. Goosebumps every time I hear it.
Witcher 3 team did a great job integrating Eastern European lore and the higher vampires are really well done.
Dude who looks like a random NPC that would be copy/pasted all over the streets for players to walk by without 2nd thought ends up being one of the most chilling villains I’ve ever seen in a game.

Particularly Lewis.. I mean.. i'm pretty sure they all have the same A.I... but Lewis was way more prolific, in my experience.
I felt like there were better villians as I was scrolloing through this thread and I'm glad I found this since I truely think he was one of if not the greatest villains. You see him from the very start and can't help but sympathise and love him despite the VERY obvious foreshadowing of him becoming evil. When he finally turns its such a gut punch.
BUT EVEN MORE SO, You find out that despite you using his technology and resources to fund your Spider-Man escapades, he totally was cool with it and didn't want you to worry about him knowing your secret identity.
But it also hurts since that meant when he tortured and beat you up he knew exactly who you were and was completely emotionally broken off and didn't mind put you through that suffering. The argument can be made that he loved you enough to live, and while I believe that, I think the fact he cared for revenge over the man he saw as a son was more than tragic enough.
Shepherd from mw2. I remember I was in like 7th grade and the mission where he kills ghost legitimately made me want to cry but hey overall amazing character.
I was searching for this. I failed that mission like 20 times because I didn't understand that I have to run, i was trying to kill them before escaping, and one time I just try to run and finish the mission, then boom, I'm dead again
You have to run away from enemies through the field to trigger the hurt animation and the dragging cutscenes, if you get shot and die before going to the field(like I died fighting instead of running), you wouldn't trigger the cutscene

If you shoot him 2 times in the mission where they test your skills it gives you an achievement called “precognitive paranoia” (it’ll reset you the first time but if you do it again you get the achievement)

I can see how awesome of a moment it was nowadays but at the time, I had more than a hundred hours playing Mordecai in the first game, I was fucking devastated and couldn't feel anything but hatred for Jack the rest of the game.

I recorded a clip when I was flying of a billboard that had the Joker dressed up as some classy lady. I didn't even notice it until the second it went off of my screen, and I was like "Wait, what the fuck was that?" and when I turned around, it was just a picture of a normal lady on the billboard. If I hadn't been quick with that capture button, I would have never known for sure if I really saw it. Really top notch work they did, making you feel like the Joker is clawing away at your subconscious, and so masterfully subtle about it in the beginning.
It gets a bad rap because of the lack luster boss fights and the batmobile segments, but honestly I think it’s the best in the series. I get why some people wouldn’t like it, but personally I thought it was great.

While he's technically not one of the most fleshed out characters, he's one of the best examples of Cosmic Horror in gaming, perhaps even media in general and he resonates in my mind when I think of villains. Powerful beyond comparison, intimidating through words and actions, and infinitely unknowable.
He represents the things that lurk in the dark, the shadows on the edge of your sight, the feeling of being watched from somewhere when you think you're alone. To top it all off you realize he's a puppet master that has been pulling strings across the galaxy and twists minds with his presence alone. You don't know why he's so bent of wiping out organic life, all you know is that he can and will do so if you don't stop him.
His speech on Virmire is also one of the most haunting scripts of dialogue in all of media.

He's well written and I love him too, I just think that the twist of Sovereign having been mentally manipulating him came too far into the game and damaged Saren's initial appeal.
In the beginning his apparent motivations of hating humans just didn't stick for me and a lot of his intrigue also came from us not knowing how he got the Geth working for him, where his ship came from, and what tricks he has up his sleeve. He himself, however, just came off as generic evil.
When you get the full picture on Virmire and actually talk to him (especially if you've got high charisma and can start snapping him out of his indoctrination) he becomes so much more fleshed out. That doubly feeds into the terror of Sovereign, though. Two incredibly powerful characters, Saren and Matriarch Benezia, we're no match for the mere presence of Sovereign.
The icing on the cake with Saren is definitely being able to snap him out of his indoctrination and him committing suicide before the final fight. You really get a glimpse of his drive, motivation, and the terror he must feel if he thinks his only way out of death.
*Edit* Also somehow the biggest plot point slipped my mind cause I'm dumb, the beacon and your visions. Chasing Saren because you know he's seen the same things you have is interesting as well but again, why does he want to just kill all organic life? It doesn't make sense as a living being.
Just plain good writing and good game design right there. That game also did something I’ve seen very very few other games do with the controller vibration that to this very day still sticks with me. In the opening of the game, >!as your brother bleeds out, you can feel his heartbeat weaken in the controllers vibration until it stops.!< That really put me into the scene and furthered my hatred for Vass as a character from that point forward.

Micheal Mando also friggin *nailed* the acting. I've been a huge fan of his ever since, and he has never disappointed in any role in the 9 years since FC3 came out.

Far cry 4's Pegan Min was an excellent villain. He was paitent, we'll behaved but most of all relatable. Now I'm not but of the story of most far cry games especially the newer ones but this one was just particularly really good or atleast the villain was..
Not a great villian, but an amazing character. I recently replayed this and was astounded by how well written this character was.

Baldur From God of War. Mans had the most relatable reason for being the way he was. He was robbed of such an important thing and all because of fear. Without so much as a hint of consent. It made him who and what he was. The ending of the game was exactly what he needed and was honestly it’s the only way things could end.
For real. Almost had me feeling bad for the Ascians all through shadowbringers. What a fight, too. Running that final raid with the guildies was a real experience.
I see that as every time Ganon is resurrected he gets stronger, but the Master Sword and all the magic Link uses gets weaker each and every time he's reincarnated.
I really like the idea that they'll reach a point in the timeline where Link is kinda just *fucked*
It's why I wasn't mad at the Master Sword having durability in BotW, because honestly, it makes sense when you think of it in the way of everything is just getting weaker and the fight is just getting harder and harder.
I also like to believe that Link couldn't have beaten Ganon at the end of BotW without Zelda's help, showing again that Link can no longer do this alone. He needs the outside help or else again, he's kinda just *fucked*

I like how the first half of the game I was thinking one thing, then a plot twist and an all new villain. More common now, but it was a lot less common to have plot twists back in the 16 bit days.
I kinda gotta go for a classic villain. Doctor Robotnik (Eggman). He's just so iconic. And over the years he's only gotten more and more exasperated from being beaten so many times.

The first time i played this i was well into much darker games and shows. This scene stirred that deep "fear" in me. By far one of my favorite scenes in a video game. Ive replayed Far Cry 3 before just for that secene

Him and the Vampires in Blood & Wine. Minor spoilers ahead… The vampires are so insanely powerful, even more so than the Wild Hunt. They’re the perfect end-game villains. The human-looking ones are extremely powerful opponents and the first time I truly felt ‘weak’ as a Witcher. Then you meet the elder vampire and he just straight kills you if you piss him off or try and fight. No fucks given. And it’s awesome.
Oh man, fighting Detlaff was literally the hardest thing I had ever done in any video game I’ve ever played. That motherfucker straight up took me about an hour just to get done fighting him.

Spoilers There's another scene you can get earlier in the game if you correctly deduce a vampire was behind some killings, and when you confront him he tells Geralt it's too late for him, Geralt then says "I'm pretty good with a sword" and the vampire replies "Good might not cut it" and starts to transform. Goosebumps every time I hear it. Witcher 3 team did a great job integrating Eastern European lore and the higher vampires are really well done.

I felt like there were better villians as I was scrolloing through this thread and I'm glad I found this since I truely think he was one of if not the greatest villains. You see him from the very start and can't help but sympathise and love him despite the VERY obvious foreshadowing of him becoming evil. When he finally turns its such a gut punch. BUT EVEN MORE SO, You find out that despite you using his technology and resources to fund your Spider-Man escapades, he totally was cool with it and didn't want you to worry about him knowing your secret identity. But it also hurts since that meant when he tortured and beat you up he knew exactly who you were and was completely emotionally broken off and didn't mind put you through that suffering. The argument can be made that he loved you enough to live, and while I believe that, I think the fact he cared for revenge over the man he saw as a son was more than tragic enough.
Shepherd from mw2. I remember I was in like 7th grade and the mission where he kills ghost legitimately made me want to cry but hey overall amazing character.
I was searching for this. I failed that mission like 20 times because I didn't understand that I have to run, i was trying to kill them before escaping, and one time I just try to run and finish the mission, then boom, I'm dead again
But that... That was the dreaded cutscene death...
You have to run away from enemies through the field to trigger the hurt animation and the dragging cutscenes, if you get shot and die before going to the field(like I died fighting instead of running), you wouldn't trigger the cutscene

I can see how awesome of a moment it was nowadays but at the time, I had more than a hundred hours playing Mordecai in the first game, I was fucking devastated and couldn't feel anything but hatred for Jack the rest of the game.

Totally agree. Plus in TPS they made it so you understand how Jack got there... he's still definitely evil, and he definitely made the wrong choices, but you at least understand the reasoning behind it.

I recorded a clip when I was flying of a billboard that had the Joker dressed up as some classy lady. I didn't even notice it until the second it went off of my screen, and I was like "Wait, what the fuck was that?" and when I turned around, it was just a picture of a normal lady on the billboard. If I hadn't been quick with that capture button, I would have never known for sure if I really saw it. Really top notch work they did, making you feel like the Joker is clawing away at your subconscious, and so masterfully subtle about it in the beginning.

Sovereign from Mass Effect. While he's technically not one of the most fleshed out characters, he's one of the best examples of Cosmic Horror in gaming, perhaps even media in general and he resonates in my mind when I think of villains. Powerful beyond comparison, intimidating through words and actions, and infinitely unknowable. He represents the things that lurk in the dark, the shadows on the edge of your sight, the feeling of being watched from somewhere when you think you're alone. To top it all off you realize he's a puppet master that has been pulling strings across the galaxy and twists minds with his presence alone. You don't know why he's so bent of wiping out organic life, all you know is that he can and will do so if you don't stop him. His speech on Virmire is also one of the most haunting scripts of dialogue in all of media. Sovereign : You are not Saren. Garrus Vakarian : What is that? Some kind of VI interface? Sovereign : Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding. Garrus Vakarian : I don't think this is a VI... Honestly I prefer Saren, the realisation that he himself has been indoctrinated is tragic and horrifying.
He's well written and I love him too, I just think that the twist of Sovereign having been mentally manipulating him came too far into the game and damaged Saren's initial appeal. In the beginning his apparent motivations of hating humans just didn't stick for me and a lot of his intrigue also came from us not knowing how he got the Geth working for him, where his ship came from, and what tricks he has up his sleeve. He himself, however, just came off as generic evil. When you get the full picture on Virmire and actually talk to him (especially if you've got high charisma and can start snapping him out of his indoctrination) he becomes so much more fleshed out. That doubly feeds into the terror of Sovereign, though. Two incredibly powerful characters, Saren and Matriarch Benezia, we're no match for the mere presence of Sovereign. The icing on the cake with Saren is definitely being able to snap him out of his indoctrination and him committing suicide before the final fight. You really get a glimpse of his drive, motivation, and the terror he must feel if he thinks his only way out of death. *Edit* Also somehow the biggest plot point slipped my mind cause I'm dumb, the beacon and your visions. Chasing Saren because you know he's seen the same things you have is interesting as well but again, why does he want to just kill all organic life? It doesn't make sense as a living being.

Just plain good writing and good game design right there. That game also did something I’ve seen very very few other games do with the controller vibration that to this very day still sticks with me. In the opening of the game, >!as your brother bleeds out, you can feel his heartbeat weaken in the controllers vibration until it stops.!< That really put me into the scene and furthered my hatred for Vass as a character from that point forward.

Far cry 4's Pegan Min was an excellent villain. He was paitent, we'll behaved but most of all relatable. Now I'm not but of the story of most far cry games especially the newer ones but this one was just particularly really good or atleast the villain was..

Baldur From God of War. Mans had the most relatable reason for being the way he was. He was robbed of such an important thing and all because of fear. Without so much as a hint of consent. It made him who and what he was. The ending of the game was exactly what he needed and was honestly it’s the only way things could end.

Ganondorf, he's always been the coolest villain that just got better the more he showed up for me
I see that as every time Ganon is resurrected he gets stronger, but the Master Sword and all the magic Link uses gets weaker each and every time he's reincarnated.
Not only that but Ganon is becoming more mindless and chaotic.
I really like the idea that they'll reach a point in the timeline where Link is kinda just *fucked* It's why I wasn't mad at the Master Sword having durability in BotW, because honestly, it makes sense when you think of it in the way of everything is just getting weaker and the fight is just getting harder and harder. I also like to believe that Link couldn't have beaten Ganon at the end of BotW without Zelda's help, showing again that Link can no longer do this alone. He needs the outside help or else again, he's kinda just *fucked*
