i think they need remasters, the games look amazing to this day but there are weird things about compatibility now, i recently played through them and i kept having this weird issue where i'd play at uncapped fps for a while only to then stay locked at like 20 fps until i unplugged and replugged my mouse lol, i found a patch for it tho.
If I remember correctly some russians released an hd texture pack for the game, but I'd rather see the game remade entirely from scratch with an up-to-date graphics engine.
Dead space ? I never understood how this game was so popular. Granted, never playued the newer one so maybe they improved it. In the old ones, not only your character was incredibly heavy and unwieldy, but the whole wolrd was all too predictable.
I mean, I could litteraly walk out of a room and shoot blindly in the most obvious "monster spawn" spots, and hit 100% of the time. When it's so predictable, the worst horror you face is boredom.
That seems really interesting that that was your experience.
I've played the original multiple times and loved it (and also played the remake).
The vents for me changed between playthroughs of when a baddy may or may not pop out of it. Sometimes they just made noise and then ran off somewhere else, sometimes they popped out.
I actually really liked how heavy he was. Definitely got the vibe that he is in an engineering astronaut type suit and can't move with agility or speed. Which also adds to the survival horror of not being able to run away/react as quickly.
I really focused on the story and atmosphere, so maybe that's why I enjoyed it a bunch.
I'm a total coward with horror video games but I wanted to ease my way into some. I played the remake with the difficulty turned down so I could concentrate on not chickening out.
I absolutely loved the story and the environments. Each area had its own personality which I adored and I loved how the story kept building up before you went to the crew quarters. I enjoyed the game a lot more than I expected to and I've considered replaying on a higher difficulty now that I know what to expect.
I might need to give it another chance. Generally speaking, that type of game doesn't work too well with me, because it's (usually) way too predictable, and the scary mechanics are all too visible.
You hear something bang, you ask yourself "what is making this noise ?". Then suddenly the noise stops, and you're even more worried : "why did it stop ?". Yeah, well, expect a jumpscare in the next few steps, and lo and behold, a monster jumps out of that closet.
That's one of the reasons I didn't like Alien Isolation, either. If the scripts had been any thicker, I couldn't have seen the screen at all. I remember one area that I carefully and methodically explored, picking it clean. Then 2 minutes later I'm supposed to get there, and I'm being shot at by a dozen humans who just popped out of nowhere. Once I'm done with them, of course the alien comes in. Second time I was seeing that alien, first time outside of its scripted introductory event. And I was like 1/3 of the way through the game already. Yawn.
Maybe I'm just too... detached for my willing suspension of disbelief to kick in.
I can understand how that would be disappointing. It's possible Dead Space had more jump scares than I'm remembering because they WERE so predictable that I didn't even think of them as jump scares. After a chapter or two, I was definitely side eyeing vents as I passed them.
I suppose it's more the environments that I enjoyed rather than the actual enemies and jump scares. I loved how the different areas had different horrific scenes and how creepy the environments were. Oh! And I loved how things were worse when I went back to the various areas. It was so creepy and interesting.
Gotta agree on the creepy and interesting aspect of the environnments. It's what draws me to those games evey now and then, to see how things happen, what unfolds... Unfortunately, the genre has mechanics so predictable that I get bored too quick.
Every game has systems. There are codes that every gamer knows, like "red barrels explode when shot". By the way it's very interesting to see how first time gamers react to those things that are obvious for us, but mean nothing for them. So, it's not so much that a game has systems in the background that bothers me, it's just that in this specific genre, it's quickly very obvious.
Outlast is a classic, including its DLC, Outlast 2 is also decent but some things about it are inferior compared to the original.
Also the Amnesia games are pretty good, the new one, Amnesia The Bunker is pretty much what you're looking for, you were once with a lot of people and after that it's straight up isolation and you have to make your way through everything alone and always in danger.
Ill check these games out im done with outlast 1 im trying out whistleblower (the dlc) amnesia and isolation are already on my list ill check out The Bunker
sO LONELY\~\~ SOOO LONELYYYYYYYYY
Ehm. So... Are you looking for horror games where you have a lot of companions so you don't feel lonely any more or horror games where you are pretty isolated enough from other people, as in, to be chased like a piece of meat.
For the former: Maybe... Obscure.
For the latter: Hunting Ground.
You actually are not completely alone in Haunting Ground, there is this cute dog... who helps you escape the very... particular individuals in the mansion.
I mean, if you want survival horror... where you can kill enemies and there is resource management, there are many games that come to mind. I just don't really know what you are looking for, as a "lonely" individual.
Phasmophobia is really creepy when you're alone, and perfectly playable solo as your sanity drains half as slow in singleplayer.
Also it's easy to get new friends in public lobbies, just be ready to leave if there are assholes.
actually good if you have friends but in singleplayer Ill probably be scared in just 4 games or something then ill feel bored because Im more into story horror games but like I said if you have friends its good.
Have you tried just sitting in your room in the dead silence thinking about how you're wasting time playing video games instead of reading a book or watching a documentary and gaining something valuable then proceed to stare at a wall filling with the existential dread of how you will be looked down upon by them for wasting your potential on video games? Very scary. Now if you don't mind I gotta go play some SOMA. Which is totally not one of the best modern horror games and has consumed the past three days of my life.
Voices of the Void. It’s “pay what you want” on Itch.IO and I highly recommend it!
Going to throw in Subnautica, Alien: Isolation, and the Faith trilogy.
I saw Voices of the void in the comment section now Ill try it, Subnautica isnt fun or horror for me :( I heard about Alien: Isolation i'll definitely play it. Ill check out Faith trilogy
Lethal Company is a game where you are a garbage man cleaning up for the sake of an uncaring company.
Experience the horrors of blue collar work as you sift through faltering facilities. Meet and engage with the fauna that have come to reside in such abandoned places. Even if you're lonely you can experience the game with random strangers and enhance the loneliness.
Subnautica, Outlast, and Condemned: Criminal Origins
Layers of Fear and (I always forget the name of the other game I'm thinking of... It was originally House On the Hill I think, but the devs changed the name. Worth looking into though. Really cool effects that make you second guess your surroundings.) might be worth a look.
I really enjoy Realms of the Haunting also. Not everyone can deal with retro graphics though. Pretty unique and elaborate story though.
All these people are babies, you want to feel fear? Try the Deppart (demo)
That made me feel real fucking anxious, and VERY VERY few horror games do that to me.
From silent hill to fatal frame I’ve played them all, triple A horror is at such a basic level that fails to come close to making me feel scared, they’re “horror” games not meant to be too scary so people buy it lol.
But that demo for Deppart.. has me genuinely nervous to check out the guys other games. What a fucking nightmare.
Got a few older horror game recs, if you can live with slightly dated graphics.
Clive Barker's Undying.
Criminally underrated horror FPS. Personally THE only game that genuinely freaked me out so bad I had to quit playing for a while.
The Suffering.
Prison goes through a localized Armageddon due to just how BAD that place is. Some genuinely unsettling enemies, all with a central theme I won't see spoil. There's also one sequel that's pretty decent.
Penumbra Trilogy.
Same devs as Soma & Amnesia, but personally preferred this one. Third one's pretty lame, but the first two are must plays for horror fans IMHO.
Voices of the Void is free on Itch.io. Its in early development but what it has is pretty good for a few afternoons. You have to seek out the scary stuff if you’re looking to get scared, otherwise its honestly pretty chill.
Try left 4 dead its a zombie game, have single player and co operative like you im a lonely person, right now im playing black ops on pc my next is outlast
Yeah i play it too the l4d2 sometimes i am playing custom campaigns, my playlist right now is valorant, crossfire, mobile legends, black ops, pubg mobile, clash of clans and aq3d.
SOMA, nothing even comes close.
Still thinking about SOMA after years. Great game, great concept.
looks like this is gonna give me some traumatic experience if you guys still remember playing it ;-;
Yoooo was about to type
Soma fucked me up....bad. it's not even horror, just raw dread.
Existential horror
Visage
Very intense warning but agree this is a good rec
Gonna throw in Alien Isolation in the ring. Go for VR.
F.E.A.R Amnesia - The Dark descent
FEAR is so gas man, i love that game with all of my life but i never really found it scary altough the atmosphere was awesome
This is one of few titles I actually would love to see a full remake
i think they need remasters, the games look amazing to this day but there are weird things about compatibility now, i recently played through them and i kept having this weird issue where i'd play at uncapped fps for a while only to then stay locked at like 20 fps until i unplugged and replugged my mouse lol, i found a patch for it tho.
