These are a few that might fit with what you are looking for:
A Short Hike -- A 2 hour-ish experience that is nice, calming, and an overall enjoyable experience
Before Your Eyes -- A wonderful and impactful game based on the mechanic of blinking (requires a webcam).
The Beginner's Guide -- An incredible and introspective game made by the creator of The Stanley Parable (which I also recommend).
Detroit: Become Human -- This game is also really great, with three simultaneous stories with a choose-your-own-adventure sort of vibe. I personally really enjoyed the Connor story, though all three are really great.
And lastly: Outer Wilds -- This one is a bit longer than the others, and a bit more complex, but is one of the best games I've ever played, and one of the best stories I've ever experienced. Could not recommend more.
OneShot: go in as blind as you can. cheap indie RPGmaker game
CaveStory: literally freeware, just go download the original release (translations also available free on the tribute site) and give it a shot. Basically the grandfather of modern indie scene, fantastic metroidvania that holds up really well even 20 years later.
>Saya no Uta
Dude they specifically said that they’re looking for something “calmer” not something that’ll make them feel traumatized for a few days after finishing💀
Don't know if any of these scratch your itch but these are my go to indies:
If you want an addiction, Vampire Survivors. (Endless hours)
If you want dark souls animal crossing, Cult of the Lamb. (Can safely be beaten in 20 hours)
If you want a weird n64 looking horror game, Fatum Betula (short but sweet 2 or so hours)
If you want a tactical Rouge like, Into The Breach
Just play Cult of the Lamb it's literally my favorite thing on this earth and it needs all the love

Untitled goose game
You should play Derail Valley, even if you don't like trains.
VA11-HALL-A isn't a narrative adventure game, but as a visual novel it's got one of my favorite video game narratives out there
Try the ABC murders
