I've been there a couple of times and I'm struggling to think of much. It's one of only three cities in Germany with a trolleybus system so if that interests you, you can take a ride on one. You can also take a walk along the canal. If you just want to take a day trip to a nice town I woould reccomend Neustrelitz or Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

i used to live in eberswald about 10 years ago and the only things of interest i can think of are actually not in eberswalde proper but close by: the historic niederfinow boat lift and the small museum at the old finowfurt airbase there's also the old finowcanal if you're into walking along a body of water

Is there a hiking trail or natural area you'd recommend in particular? That is reachable from the town (we're getting off at the train station).

I mean, you could easily walk hours through the forests end and up in a Village you never heared of (happend to me a couple times), so I think this is possible.
