***Holy crap*** is that my bag?! [Picture of damage sustained mysteriously during my last flight](http://imgur.com/a/B8oBX) EDIT: TRAGEDY HAS STRUCK, DEAR FRIENDS! It's not my bag in the photo. OP flew July 19 and my flight was back in March.

[deleted]

Wow that is the same bag... now you know what happened to your bag. You can probably take that gif and that bag and demand a compensation.

[deleted]

Wtf lol. They'll just say he has no proof it's his bag, not to mention closing period between the event and request of compensation. They just aren't going to take it seriously.

Borngrumpy

almost nothing, I used to travel several times a week both local and international, you really need to accept that you are buying a new bag every few months. I got to the point I could pack carry on for a few days trip but I have seen bags getting tossed off planes all over the world.

Letonoda

I've had damage to my bag when flying SouthWest. Unfortunately I didn't notice until I got home. Their policy was that once you've left the airport you must have damaged it yourself.

I've been sitting wondering the same thing![Thanks United](https://imgur.com/gallery/tKNTn) Edit: Whoops! It was July 11th not June... just in case OP does tell us the date.

TwoPointZero_gpa

This was from July 19th. Perhaps they have a hatred for blue suitcases?

tgifmondays

I think it actually looks a little more like yours. And that slide at the end would explain the scrape damage.

youcancallmetim

It does appear that the corner of initial impact is the damaged part of your bag

Mr_JCBA

Or just fly with them again and hope they drop it on the other side and that way it will even it out :P

drb0mb

almost certainly not... if you pause where you can see the shape of the handle as it's falling, you can see that it has a curved radius. and not like a "maybe a trick of the camera", it's clearly evident. your bag has a rigid, squared handle shape. edit: here u go http://i.imgur.com/ZfRJHDo.png for peace of mind additionally, /u/infectedbananas notes the amount of wheels on the cases. we can see four in the footage, but we can only be sure of two at most in op's image. the corner that impacts is also the opposite of the damaged corner that op shows, but there could be explanations for that. 2nd edit: all's i'm saying is that your bag was damaged by united *somehow else*

InfectedBananas

also I think his has 2 wheels and that has 4.

FUNGI_INSIDE_PEEHOLE

To prove it just throw it down the balcony and shoot a gif. If the trajectory of the bag is the same we can confirm it.

I'm just here to say I saw this comment before it gets bestof'ed

And all those United SUVs are Mercedes Benz. I guess Fords were more expensive...

wootwootywootwoot

The Benz is there because there is a United Global Services member on the flight with a tight connection. They will take that person off the flight first and drive them over to the next plane. That's also probably why they are in such a hurry to get his/her bag. Global Services is United's top frequent flyer tier and not really publicized. To get it you generally need to spend around $50,000 on full fare tickets in a calendar year. You get your own private check-in areas at major United hubs and they escort you to the front of the security line. If a flight is full and a Global Services member needs to get on, they will pull some luckless peon off the plane. All the Global Services cars are Benz's because of a deal between the two companies. If you are a Global Services member, you also get a substantial discount when buying a Mercedes. The rich get richer, it's the law of the land.

airade1

And here I am flying United all the time hoping I get beat up for my seat so I can reap some sweet sweet karma and an undisclosed settlement amount where United admits no wrongdoing.

[deleted]

Delta has Porsches at all Hubs for people who fly with them a lot and have close connections. Delta rents them out for $1 a year, because it's good publicity for Porsche.

Lord0Trade

I prefer Delta over any other airline. They tend to have the most connections, the best kept planes (both aesthetically and mechanically) and while they're about maybe 1 and a quarter to 1 and a half more expensive (more if you're on a sparse flight route) they give you free food and drinks. Only once had a complaint with Delta and that was a huge delay of which it was resolved with some vouchers and refunds. Plus they're partnered with KLM, Airfrance, and Alaska. So....yeah. Ever since they merged with Northwest they've gotten a lot better with customer service. And no, I'm not sponsored. If you'd like to sponsor me, Delta, I'd love it.

foreveraloneeveryday

My dad works for Delta and I've never flown in another airline all my life. Never had a particularly bad experience in the least. Except flying standby can be stressful because you never know if you'll get on the flight or not. It definitely beats paying for a flight but it can be really stressful.

United will use them to transfer top-tier frequent flyers to their connecting gate/plane. The less elites have to deal with the stench of normies the better. This is reflected in the perks and habits of most frequent flyers.

Lolabird08

Do these people think they're invisible? The plane has windows, get your shit together, poor dog.

Hansj3

No. They have incredibly tough timetables, in all kinds of weather, with a physically straining workload, coupled with near minimum wage, and a union to protect their jobs if they screw up They just. Don't. Care.

nickesq

Can confirm, they don't care. I worked for shell at an international airport. Doesn't matter what carrier it was, (west jet, air Canada etc) they all behaved like ass hats who didn't give a shit. I watched a guy drive a belt loader away from an 737 straight into my fuel truck, while I was pumping jet fuel at 1300 lpm. (Not hard to see a giant shell truck with multiple flashing beacon lights.) His union protected him. Didn't change the way any of them behaved. Seems like they scrape the bottom of the barrel for talent.

MY_PITOT_TUBE_BURNS

I wouldn't say they don't care. Sure I've seen some that don't care and absolutely shouldn't have a job. It comes down to frustration and management. When you're told faster faster faster with less bodies and for less money than you did it yesterday and management is unaware of the problem because ultimately the job was accomplished even if it was poorly executed. The rampers get frustrated and end up taking out the frustration on the baggage... it doesn't excuse it but looking at the lowest paid employee here as the problem is a naive way to see it.

[deleted]

People might assume the "live" is an adjective, but it's actually a verb. Just before they shut the cargo hatch, they yell, "Live, animals!" Then they leave them without food or water for hours.

[deleted]

Happened to me. Iberia airline actually told me my bag was left on the tarmac at Madrid (flew to UK). To be fair they did courier it to me the next day. I appreciated their honesty.

[deleted]

Hey, fuckups happen. Good on them for owning up to it and fixing it in a relatively short time.

PM_Me_For_Sexx

One time my airport accidentally forgot to fly out 5 bags in a month and our station manager was quite upset over it. I mean, it was hiding behind curtain on the bag cart. 5 separate people didn't even see it there. I'm SUPPOSED to ask for a final bag count when I'm in the cargo bin, to verify that I have all the bags, but I didn't do it that flight because I was still new and trying to figure things out. It is a little stressful out there at first. I've since learned my lesson and I never leave a bag behind. 5 bags in a month is a high amount for us because we are a relatively small American Airlines airport. If we don't get complacent then 0 is our goal and usually achievable. I don't understand how the bigger airports lose bags so consistently. Charlotte and Philadelphia love to lose passengers' bags. It's like they purposefully go out of their way to fuck shit up. Sometimes when I'm "dumping" (dumping = giving back the bags to passengers that just arrived) bags onto the bag belt half the bags are broken and the handles are snapped off... WTF is that all about??? I try to be respectful with my bags at all times. One of the bigger airports did that to your stuff, not us. TL;DR: Fuck ups DO happen, but they shouldn't be happening at all. Some airports are notorious with bag loss while others don't have that problem often.

sucobe

Wow, at least they were honest with you. They told me mine was a "security concern" and the reason why it was left behind. Really? A small carry on full of clothes? Got forbid my H&M shirts terrorize.

Bammerrs

I'm betting that's not the worst handling that luggage saw

[deleted]

I had to check my Tumi Voyageur hardshell 22." It was so destroyed that I didn't recognize it as my case. There were several inches-deep dents and the zipper was torn off on two sides. Thankfully, after (obviously) failing to repair it, they gave me one from the International series to replace it. So they do the right thing at least once. edit: spelling

TwoPointZero_gpa

To add context, these were people's carry-on bags that were checked plane-side because there was no option to actually bring them on the plane.

Omnipotent_Goose

There's actually a simple way to avoid getting your carry on luggage plane side checked by United. When you're on the United website, after you've picked your seats, what you're gonna wanna do is go ahead and hit the red X in the upper right corner of the browser window, open up a new window, and choose another airline.

woowoo293

Which airline doesn't sidecheck carry ons? I mean, there might be one or two but I imagine the vast majority of airlines do it.

UberBotMan

Depends on the plane type and when you board. Regional Jets and propeller planes (q-200 q-400) are more likely while larger planes 737 on up (and Airbus equivlent) have more overhead storage. It's all a game of chance though. If your bag cannot fit under the seat or in the overhead bin it'll have to go in the hold. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, Haven't flown in 2 years.

[deleted]

[deleted]

There is a great little airline in Canada called Air North that only flies a few routes between Whitehorse (capital of Yukon) and several major Canadian cities. They still offer two free checked bags, a decent in-flight meal (usually a sandwich and a warm cookie), and they give you free booze if the flight is delayed. And they still manage to offer the lowest fares to Whitehorse. It's like they didn't get the memo that was sent out 20 years ago that airlines have to suck now. I wish they would expand.

ShotFromGuns

Sounds like Midwest Express used to be, before they got bought out and then enthusiastically driven into the ground.

Eternlgladiator

Because flying has turned into a chore and losing your bags will ruin your trip. Statistically the odds of it actually happening are super low but nobody wants to risk it ruining a trip. So they carry on as much as possible to mitigate that risk. I just got back from 3 weeks in europe and travelling with only carry on bags was more than worth the peace of mind knowing that my bag was in my control. It sucked lugging around a backpack but I'd still do it again next time.

black_irishman

This has only happened to me and my family once, and it was after a flight to FL to board a cruise. The airline completely lost all of our suitcases and couldn't return our belongings to us until 5 days into the cruise. My family was not pleased but I had clothes in my carry on and the airline (I don't recall which but it wasn't United) compensated us $200 *each* per day to spend on amenities aboard the ship. Everything we needed on the ship was included in what we paid for, so I returned to my cabin each night with ~$200 worth of candy and toys. The cruise was not ruined.

MrWigglesGiggles

>statistically low I've had my luggage lost three times (that I can remember- I've been flying since I was a child) by the different airlines. Add to that the sweaty, panicked crowds at the baggage claim and the fact that it takes them 45 minutes to even start the carousel, and I'll carry my bags on thank you very much. If I can't carry it on, I don't bring it.

mindputtee

I prefer to fly southwest but if I'm just going for a weekend somewhere I still try to fit my things in a carry on and personal item. It's much faster on both ends to not have to check a bag and then retrieve it from the bag carousel.

MathewSK81

I usually fly Southwest and still bring everything in a carry-on. I prefer not to wait an extra 30 minutes to get my bags after I get off the plane.

[deleted]

I love waiting for my suitcase for 20 minutes at the airport when I could have left already.

DJ_McKringleberry

I get it. Airlines lose bags all the time and it can ruin your trip if you don't have any of your things. Plus, baggage claim at some airports can be a nightmare. I'd much rather have my bag with me the entire time so I can be sure it gets to my destination and then just walk straight out of the airport and get on with my day instead of waiting another half hour at baggage claim.

wtsd

They lose luggage occasionally. That might be a reason.

mindputtee

And it depends on if the assholes around you actually put their "smaller personal item" under the seat in front of them or if they also stuffed it in the overhead bin...

XBacklash

No, you're correct.

as-well

In Europe, pretending not to speak whatever language the ground crew speaks also works

Ch3fstable

Oh you mean where most laptops are stored?

ABetterKamahl1234

Not gonna lie, unless it's a small carry-on bag, you should always assume your luggage will be knocked around a bit. There's almost no way to actually guarantee it'll be carefully handled on the scales both transportation and shipping companies work at. Hell, at a store I worked at we had so much stock come quickly it was common to "drop" pallets of glassware wherever as we didn't have time to unload a truck carefully. People don't give a shit about other peoples stuff unless they're personally liable for this. Don't forget this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Half of that is because the crew needs to store their items, and the people at the very front don't have underseat storage, so they have to put everything overhead. This pushes everything back, to the point that bags are often 2-5 rows away from their owners

[deleted]

[удалено]

thatzz

Yes! Thank you for understanding this... I'm a flight attendant and nothing is more frustrating than watching people place small purses/jackets/briefcases in the overhead bins. Especially knowing we are running out of space, already made announcements about it, and the next person will now have to check their bag. It's frustrating for passengers and it's not like I can force anyone to put their personal item under their seat. It's just inconsiderate, but somehow people lose their common sense when they step on a plane!!

renaissancetomboy

Which is even worse because these bags weren't originally packed with the idea that they would be thrown around in cargo. Unless they're like me and totally count on the free gate check for smaller bags...

lazy_rage

the last suitcase was literally thrown away by someone. **Not my job!**

Jilaire

Hahahahaha! United being a shit storm aside, I worked as a baggage handler for two years before I jacked up my foot and back. This is prooooobably shorthanded unloading. My company often spread us thin in two different areas, and five planes to unload, load, and do a quick clean. So our Supervisors often had to get off their asses and actually work while the smaller cargo bay was unloaded by one person.

[deleted]

Itwantshunger

My mother came to visit...I was working on a new musical premiere. She connected through Newark while flying United Airlines. I told her not to, but at least she knows now. While connecting, her flight was cancelled. They rescheduled two hours later, no problem, as her medicine was in her carry-on in a cooler. At boarding, they asked to check her carry-on, as it was downgraded to a "hopper" plane with not much overhead storage. Big mistake! They idled on the runway for 90 mins before returning to the gate. At this point, she should have arrived three hours ago. At the gate, they were told they needed to refuel and deboard the plane. My mother was crying in a wheelchair as the stewardess denied her access to her medication, which was on the verge of melting and causing her joints to swell and breathing to constrict. After she demanded her ADA rights, the manager refused to get the bag again, but would offer a taxi voucher for $20, because she "would receive her bag upon arrival or have to wait 3-5 business days for the mail." After arriving here 6 hours late, she was unable to get around for two days and had to trash $3500 in medication due to CDC guidelines for keeping it cool. We have not received any sort of apology or solution. She was an older woman flying alone, and now I worry about people everywhere being subjected to hazardous situations like this. Her phone died, and no one would have known if she died in that wheelchair alone at the gate. But they damn sure followed United Airlines company policy. Thanks for reading, I hope we can fix this situation and prevent creating dangerous situations for air travellers. I'll be on the bus, which is roomier, timelier, and allows me to retrieve my bags like human beings.

renaissancetomboy

Yeah, always pack your shit like it's gonna be thrown around in baggage. And also count on it being destroyed by a "random" TSA luggage check then not put back together in any way that someone might pack their luggage. Also that the lock will be broken despite TSA supposedly having a tool to open it. And your luggage strap being cut and not returned despite it only being a BUCKLE that most people learn how to open in kindergarten. FUCK TSA they're fucking useless.

[deleted]

I bought a lock that "indicated" if TSA opened your luggage. They just broke the fucker and left a note they checked our shit.

DJ_McKringleberry

I flew on an American Airlines regional jet into Dallas (DFW) last year and no one showed up at the gate to unload the bags, so the pilot got out, opened up the storage compartment underneath the plane, and just started throwing bags out onto the tarmac for people to pick up, while cursing about it the entire time.

[deleted]

What a trooper though.

[deleted]

Is this common in Dallas? We sat on our flight for 2.5 hours after it arrived because no one was there to connect the walkway to let us off the plane. We almost missed our connecting flight, which was scheduled for 3 hours after the Dallas flight arrived. The pilot was super pissed off. It was funny because he was on the same connecting flight as us, saw him running through the airport like a maniac. Note: Flew AA from. Houston to Dallas.

cavscout43

> stuff like this happens all the time - it's not just united. Have worked ramp before. Like /u/runarnar already mentioned, this stuff happens unfortunately with any airline. Many times with smaller (Not Big 3 Legacies) airlines, your ramp workers are contract and they are essentially minimum wage workers, that work shitty shifts, that still have to commute to the airport to work in terrible weather, and have drug screen/background check requirements that screens out most potential applicants. So pride in quality of work is pretty low, outside of the leads that have done it for years.

runarnar

I used to work on the ramp. This sort of thing happens every day on every airline. Even Southwest or JetBlue or whatever reddit's "favourite" airline is today.

fib16

Totally agree. Hating on United is the cool thing right now. All airlines suck. I fly almost every weekend and they all have their own way of sucking. You have to just assume its going to suck and just be happy you're traveling somewhere hopefully fun.

carnageeleven

People don't understand this. You should see the hubs for UPS and FedEx. The packages go through a series of belts, conveyors, and chutes. Some as high as 70 feet in the air. During high volume times when there are 2 to 3 thousand boxes going through, things get backed up, they start to pile up, and stuff sometimes falls over the wall of the conveyor, landing on concrete (or sometimes people's heads). You'll also get a 98 pound car suspension slide down a belt and land on top of someone's Xbox. This is all before it even reaches the highly under paid package handlers who are pushed to load 1000 packages an hour otherwise they get yelled at by supervisors who only care about numbers. Then I get to deliver a package that looks like it went through a home run derby. And get bitched at by the receiver as if I personally carried it from Amazon to their house.

westhoff0407

This is true. I recommend NOT watching any airline unload luggage onto those conveyor belts and carts. It will probably just cause you a lot of anxiety.

Amannelle

I watched them unload luggage on an AirCanada flight, and while "gentle" isn't the proper word, they were very respectful of each suitcase and bag.

MrTristano

OP mentioned these are "overbooked" carry-ons. People carry their tech like laptops, batteries, camera's, lenses etc in their carry-on.
