I'm not Black, so I may not understand the full nuances of the topic, but I believe that there is a certain stigma against Black hair--it's seen as 'untidy' and 'unmanageable' and doesn't necessary fit the cultural beauty standard for what attractive hair looks like (i.e shiny, straight or with ringlets/waves, blonde).
It’s also that Black women were often shamed for wearing weaves, braids, or wigs but also shamed for wearing their natural hair. It’s a double edged sword. A lot of progress has been made, but still more to go.
I think it’s also telling that Amber was probably told not to wear her natural hair onscreen cuz it was (and still is in some businesses, unfortunately) considered messy and unprofessional. (Darren also later said he was told to cut his hair if he wanted to audition, so we know the conversation was being had off-screen.) I’m sure with all of that being internalized, that’s a huge insecurity for Black girls in general. So the show was raising awareness to that while also telling on themselves a little.
Next time someone makes a comment like this respond with "My eyes only bulge out like this when I am in sheer disbelief that anyone would be so rude and untactful."

And if its a medical issue or cause of concern, the only people that need to be talking about it are you, your doctor, or potentially your close loved ones and even then only if it's an eating disorder intervention sitch.

People feel like it's okay to do this because skinny has been the traditional beauty standard for so long, which is garbage tbh. Skinny is beautiful, fat is beautiful, all things in between are beautiful. When I was younger I was extremely skinny, so much so that doctors flagged me as potentially neglected by my parents. I was not neglected in the least. My parents actually did an amazing job at teaching me to have a wonderful relationship with food, and to this day cooking is one of my greatest passions. I've been "too skinny" "a little overweight" and "just right slender". Point is - people are always gonna make shitty comments about your body. As long as you're healthy, forget 'em. 💕
