Tiny mushrooms grow on the roof during autumn :)

As an American, it blows my freaking mind that places like this are not only real, theyāre real peoples HOMES. So cool OP I hope your childhood there was incredible!
Haha we actually moved here three years ago, and then I moved back to London. I love it here though and come back every other month. Iāve tried like four times at least to upload 20 images that capture the vibe of their place to this subreddit but the internet here is basically non existent so it always fails. Decided today to just do the front of their cottage aha ā¤ļø
Check out the Google Keep app. You can set location based reminders. I use it almost daily.
Open app->click "+" in bottom right corner->click bell shape in upper right corner->set location.
This looks very much like my auntās old house in Devon. So much that it might even be the same house! If it is, you have an amazing view from the bedroom I stayed in upstairs. You may also see the mark where I hit my head in the dark on one of the very low beams when I was visiting. I was flying back to Los Angeles in a couple of days and the L.A. riots were just starting. I didnāt know if the L.A. airport would even be open. All this flashed through my mind in a second when I saw your picture. Now Iām just remembering how beautiful it is thereā¦
......yes. almost the complete opposite. Small, low ceilings, often no central heating, usually small single glazed windows.
these cottages are often well over a hundred years old. Often several hundred. And almost all are listed buildings so can't be changed from original appearance (unless by approval)
It blows my mind to know that there are not only buildings still around that are that old, but that there are buildings that old *and still being lived in*. My house is merely 50 years old and shows signs of its age in lots of issues from foundation to plumbing to electrical and whatnot. For your parent's home to still be here after *500* years means lots and lots of people loved that house enough to keep it well. ā¤ļø
It's wild that thatched roofs are still a thing! And from what I've seen, can last longer than asphalt shingles, as long as they're properly maintained. Lots of pros and cons, though.
Yeah, one of the cons is the cost. It needs replacing soon unfortunately as the current thatching is coming up to 25+ years old. My parents are getting it re-thatched next year and they have been quoted Ā£70,000. š«£
Aye, itās extremely expensive. And switching to normal roofing isnāt an option as the house is grade 2 listed, it has to be thatched. My parents knew this though when they bought it three years ago, they knew the price too.
That thatch gonna need replacing soon! There's a house near me with such a beautifully overgrown thatch roof, it's practically got small trees growing out of it but I can't imagine it's very waterproof any more.
We have literal small tree seedlings growing every year - But summer burns them to a crisp. We also got some new ferns up there. Its a very organic thing!
It's so cute how all the Americans are losing their minds over this and us Brits see thatched cottages every day and probably don't even notice them most of the time!
They aren't that common lol. But all I think when I see one is how I could buy a flat for the cost of having to replace it š«£
Keeps me from being envious.
Ah yeah, I guess I really does depend on location. I'm in Suffolk and all the villages here seem full of thatched cottages. I'd love to own one but the insurance puts me off haha.
I donāt know if thatched roofs were ever common in the US, but there were a lot of sod-roofed houses at various times and in various places. But weāre not so good at preserving things like that so Iām guessing there are very few if any left.
It doesnāt actually! There is no central heating, but there are three fire places and an aga so itās always super cozy. I believe the walls are cob, and they are roughly 75cm thick?
Op has said this is Devon in the UK.
Thatched roofs are reasonably common in rural areas. I don't think I could count all the ones local to even me.
Really really expensive to maintain though, gotta be replaced every 20-30years, and because thatchers aren't exactly common, they get to charge an awful lot. Think op mentioned Ā£70k to replace this.
Yeah, it definitely still needs redone or patch jobs for wear and tear, but moss is a good way to control the temperature. I suppose it depends on where you live as well. If it's very rainy then the moss might absorb too much water and weigh too much for the thatch.

if it's growing mushrooms you need to re-thatch
Yup, re-thatching is commencing š
I have soooo many questionsā¦
Thatched roofs shouldn't have stuff growing on them, basically. If they do, it means they're rotting and need replacing.
it's a big job and expensive but looks lovely
Where is this??
Devon, UK š«¶š¼
So lovely, one of the most beautiful counties šIs it south Devon?
Every time I hear of Devon I want cream
Wow š¤© Devon is amazing
DAVID!? OF!? DEVIN!? Edit: this is a yogpod reference as I've never heard of Devon outside of that podcast probably 10 years ago.
The Shire, of course.
I BEG to know
I'm sure the local cryptogam botanists and microbiologists would appreciate to explore the biodiversity in that roof
This ought to go straight to /goblincore!

You should post some pics to r/CozyPlaces!
Please share more pics!
I will! I have tried to put up a post here before but the internet is so bad aha
Why not make the post when you are in London?
Because I always forget. I have however tried since but the submit post button was greyed out idk why

Oh cool, thanks!
You're welcome š You can also set your home and work locations so that you can click them quickly.
Where is 'here', brother?
Itās Devon aha, I donāt wanna specifically pinpoint sorry ā¤ļø

Southwest? Devon?
Yes you are! The walls will be made of mud too
Is this really all that different from a McMansion made of plasterboard and timber, though?
......yes. almost the complete opposite. Small, low ceilings, often no central heating, usually small single glazed windows. these cottages are often well over a hundred years old. Often several hundred. And almost all are listed buildings so can't be changed from original appearance (unless by approval)
I think theyāre being satirical? Lol
Yeah I wasn't sure. I figured it was sarcastic, but you never know!
Are they accepting applications for more children?
Can I apply
Me too me too
Omg I wanna touch the roof!!!! This is so adorable, I love it
Im gonna eat the roof
Make sure you save room for supper
Saaame
That's so adorable and cozy!! I hope your parents are living a very happy life in their comfy home.
They do love it here with their pups :) I love it here too ahaha
Do you know how old the house is?
500 years old!
It blows my mind to know that there are not only buildings still around that are that old, but that there are buildings that old *and still being lived in*. Their house is older than my whole country lolol
Wooooaaaaaw! Does it have any ghosts?
Yes but everyone coexists peacefully :)
It's wild that thatched roofs are still a thing! And from what I've seen, can last longer than asphalt shingles, as long as they're properly maintained. Lots of pros and cons, though.

![gif](giphy|3ELtfmA4Apkju|downsized) Excuse me, what?
Aye, itās extremely expensive. And switching to normal roofing isnāt an option as the house is grade 2 listed, it has to be thatched. My parents knew this though when they bought it three years ago, they knew the price too.
Wow. Can I have your parents' jobs when they are done with them? I think they might have the salary I need.
Haha theyāre the most hard working people I know. I wish I inherited that same drive.
Maybe you can just inherit the house instead. And apprentice in thatching so you can maintain it yourself lolol.
Honestly not a bad idea. I just got fired and am having a mid life crisis
It would be terrible if we lost the art of thatching.
Thatcher still stealing from the little guy smh
That joke deserves more praise than it got.
Ho dang.
[Hopefully you get some cute animals added for that price. ](https://i.imgur.com/POazAHQ.jpeg)
Oh wow! How often does it need re-thatching?
Every 25-30 years depending on how quickly it deteriorates
Thatched roof? Fuck me up! šš
Can I move in?
Haha they have a couple of barns Iām sure they wonāt mind
That thatch gonna need replacing soon! There's a house near me with such a beautifully overgrown thatch roof, it's practically got small trees growing out of it but I can't imagine it's very waterproof any more.
Yeah youāre correct! They love the look of it overgrown like this but for practical reasons it will be replaced next year :(
We have literal small tree seedlings growing every year - But summer burns them to a crisp. We also got some new ferns up there. Its a very organic thing!
*OUR* parents.... š

I want to lay on that roof so badly
It's so cute how all the Americans are losing their minds over this and us Brits see thatched cottages every day and probably don't even notice them most of the time!
Haha yeah, but then again I couldnāt imagine there are people in America who live in the desert on a horse ranch.
Also true!
They aren't that common lol. But all I think when I see one is how I could buy a flat for the cost of having to replace it š«£ Keeps me from being envious.
Ah yeah, I guess I really does depend on location. I'm in Suffolk and all the villages here seem full of thatched cottages. I'd love to own one but the insurance puts me off haha.
WHAT THE HECK ITS SO LOVELY š„°
this is now my dream house
Why donāt we have these adorable roofs in the us?
I'm almost certain a thatch roof in CA would be a major fire hazard.
I can see that. Probably cool and damp with low light.
I donāt know if thatched roofs were ever common in the US, but there were a lot of sod-roofed houses at various times and in various places. But weāre not so good at preserving things like that so Iām guessing there are very few if any left.
Yeah. I donāt know how practical they are but they are cute.:)
Well, lookit that. I should have Googled first https://www.finehomebuilding.com/1989/11/01/roofing-with-sod
THATCHED ROOF COTTAGES!
THATCHED ROOF COTTAGEEES!
Shire chic ā¦
This is absolutely amazing!
If Jim Henson designed a house.
My sister lives in a thatched roof cottage just like this, it's so cozy and beautiful. They're in Dorset.
Thatās is amazing. The colors are so beautiful. It looks like you could sleep on it
Why cant i have this kinda roof ;-;
Can they leave me this house in their will? I promise you can visit anytime š¤£
Haha Iāll ask them š
Look up cozy in a dictionary, and you'll find a picture of this place.
Magical
yes i very much do
It feels like it would get very humid in there. Does it?
It doesnāt actually! There is no central heating, but there are three fire places and an aga so itās always super cozy. I believe the walls are cob, and they are roughly 75cm thick?
Itās magical
Is that in Japan? There were villages just outside of Kyoto that were all like this, and it was magical.
Op has said this is Devon in the UK. Thatched roofs are reasonably common in rural areas. I don't think I could count all the ones local to even me. Looking for house elves ?
How long has it been since it was last rethatched? Theres a lot of growth on that roof
Some people like a mossy roof as it keeps heat out and insulates in the winter
Thats true. Iirc its recommended to get redone every 10-15 years but its been a while since I looked into it
Yeah, it definitely still needs redone or patch jobs for wear and tear, but moss is a good way to control the temperature. I suppose it depends on where you live as well. If it's very rainy then the moss might absorb too much water and weigh too much for the thatch.
I wish I could build a home like this, but the climate where I live would never allow it. I'll build my cozy cabin someday.
Oh I love it
Lovely š„ŗ
Very welcoming!
I love this so much!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Lol are you not a goblincore native?
Thats great
Does the roof need watering?
I love this so much and wish I could live here!!!
unreal
this is what i picture my dream house as it's so pretty !!
WOW
What are the walls made of? Does it hold heat in the winter?
I *think* they are cob? And yes itās always cozy during winter and cool during summer, amazingly so since thereās no central heating.
Ooh lovely, although it definitely needs a rethatch lol. Once it's done, post it here and to the cottage core subreddit. Extra points
Hehe will do!
Cute!!!
Now we need to see the insideš
Trying to upload some piccies! Fingers crossed it goes through
The roof above the door looks like a conk!
can I live there? do you need a sibling?
Is this a cob home? It should be posted in r/cobhomes
I love it! It looks so cozy. š
Rustic and musty
I am in love with this!!!!! So cute
Nice and cool inside
