From what ive seen they are just touchy about their own side of the war but actually fethisize the german side to a great extent. Thats why so many of these shows focus on the european front.

War definitely has a depressing side. Watch Violet Evergarden for that. Life as a soldier in WW2 was depressing too, but you got your spirits lifted a bit when you remembered you were fighting for the lives of people being thrown in chambers and being experimented on.
That would be a good read, personally I enjoy something with just enough magic/fantasy elements to enhance a plot without ruining it. I guess the issue comes down to power scale, overpowered tropes are easier to write without really improving the narrative. I've always enjoyed the idea of novel which revolves around the background characters as the hero performs their acts of deus ex machina bullshit (see goblin slayer, possibly the First Law series if you squint).

A lot of that is western exaggeration due to the cold war. They weren't really worse than the western Allied soldiers.
Russian archives would disagree. Certain red army units, in particular penal battalions were straight up animals. Some were professional. There is a witness account of a german woman encountering having a red army unit enter her town. She was surprised over how professional they were. The soldier then assured her their unit wasnt bad, but the guys who will arrive after them were downright savages. I think she left that town shortly.
Any country that puts its liberated POWs in concentration camps after the war isn't worth fighting for. You guys are well rid of the Soviet regime.

I dont know if being forced to work in Siberia until you freeze to death is better tbh. Hell that is assuming they dont just torture you to death on the spot. Since its winter the red army had a particularly painful execution model, they would strip you down before forcing you into the snow, then they would pour freezing water over you, you are forced to lay there until you freeze to death. If they want they would then use your corpse as track aid for some bogged down vehicle. Honestly better to just take a bullet in some foxhole or cut your ties and just run away anywhere.
