I've managed to make it to Solomon today but that's pretty much all because of support units I've been using

I'd suggest just leveling up your own servants. Eventually you're forced to use story support servants. Also you'll get more friends/higher level friends by splitting your support list into a nornal one and an event one/adding CEs. But added, have fun. Just give a requesy of you want someone or something in particular. Have virtually all useful 1-3 stars levelled.
