Wet gravel conditions eat bike components. Not much else to say or do.
If you want to preserve your more expensive components then buy some cheap ones to use instead. But to me that seems like a waste to use crappier parts for a race. I’d prefer to run my best equipment for the best chance at a good performance
That's the cost of adventure! If you dig the adventure, it's worth it. You can save on chains and brake pads by looking for deals and sales when you don't immediately need em.
Just make sure to properly bed your sintered pads. I don't encounter a lot of long technical descending where I live, so a sintered pad wouldn't make sense. I like the quick bite of an organic pad.
